04/01 — Jay Cutler is officially on the trading block and according to multiple reports the Jets are interested in his services. But while the rumor mill is churning, GM Mike Tannenbaum is not showing his cards, declining comment to the Radar about whether the Jets want to be dealt into the Cutler tournament.
Around 9 p.m. EDT Tuesday (as Jets head coach Rex Ryan and a small group of his assistants were watching the Golden Gloves boxing semifinals at Michael J. Petrides High School on Staten Island, N.Y.), the Denver Broncos released the following statement from their owner, Pat Bowlen:
"Numerous attempts to contact Jay Cutler in the last 10 days, both by head coach Josh McDaniels and myself, have been unsuccessful. A conversation with his agent earlier today clearly communicated and confirmed to us that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos. We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded."
No matter what paper you read or what site you visit today, the Jets and some/all of the following teams have been mentioned as potential Cutler suitors: Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Redskins.
To say this situation is unique would be an understatement. When was the last time such a gifted QB has been traded as he's poised to enter his prime? The 6’3”, 233-pound Cutler, who will turn 26 on April 29, is perhaps the most physically gifted passer in football.
He made a post-Thanksgiving visit to the Meadowlands on Nov. 30 and put on an aerial show. Despite the rain and raw conditions, he torched the Jets for 357 yards and two touchdown passes in a 34-17 road win. Cutler, a cocky youngster who was selected No. 11 overall out of Vanderbilt in 2006, rubbed Kerry Rhodes the wrong way during that contest and the Jets' safety has publicly made known his dislike for the prolific passer this off-season. But Rhodes also said last week he could play with the QB if the two wound up on the same team.
Reports have Cutler recently moving out of his Nashville, Tenn., home for parts unknown while the Broncos continue their off-season workout program. He demanded a trade after new Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels had talks with the New England Patriots about acquiring McDaniels' former protégé, Matt Cassel. Despite subsequent discourse, Cutler’s desire to leave never changed and now he appears on his way out.
Throughout the off-season, the Jets have continued to state that they are comfortable with their quarterback situation. Unless the team makes a play for Cutler or drafts a quarterback in Round 1, Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff and Erik Ainge will battle for the top spot in camp.
What would it take to land Cutler? Ah, a great question, but who knows if the Broncos even have the answer at the moment? They likely will be in a situation to play teams off of each other and a three-team trade can't be dismissed.
But Cutler won’t come cheap. The Denver Post quoted an unnamed high-profile agent as saying: “I could see a first[-rounder] and a second this year and a first next year. If you're looking at some unknown kid in the draft, you'd much rather have Cutler. You're talking about a quarterback who's athletic and talented. The only question on this kid is maturity, but he's going to grow from this."
The Cutler story will continue to grow as well. Eight months after landing Brett Favre in a trade, the Jets have the option to take a similar route to acquire Cutler. When asked last season if he though he had a stronger arm than Favre, Cutler didn’t shy away.
“He’s 39, soon to be 40. I think he may have given me a run back in his 20s, but I think I got him now.”
Many Jets fans would love to see Cutler follow Favre to New York. Interestingly enough, the two men share the same agent in Bus Cook and Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum has a strong working relationship with Cook.
The Jay Cutler sweepstakes have begun. As Ryan signed autographs and posed for photos Tuesday night at the fights, one spectator stood behind the head coach in the bleachers. Donning Broncos garb (in Staten Island of all places), he yelled in no uncertain terms that the Jets had to get Cutler.
Do they?

However, Culter isn't only a starter, but a damn good one at that. If we do get him I wont be upset, so long as his contract somehow stops his baby-ish behaviour. If he shines, trust me, Rhodes will get over it. Tho me thinks he will be a Lion."

I'm sure the Lions realize it's not a good draft year for QBs. I'm sure that having the No.1 overall pick they can get away with giving it up and maybe just a 2nd, whereas we can only give them a 17th so we'd have to sell our 'draft-soul' to get him. Unless they'd take one of our QBs..."

Wed, April 1, 2009 - 9:59pm ET"Strong Line, Strong Running Game, Strong D. All components to win. Any of our current 3 can get us far with all those behind them. However, Cutler would add a passing threat. I believe he'd get us far, but there's no saying that KC or Ratliff couldn't do the same as well. Either way it goes, the Jets can win. Cutler just gives us a better chance now and for years to come."
wingman Said:
Wed, April 1, 2009 - 10:03pm ET"The price will be too high, probably a first round pick and someone like David Harris, and a first round pick for 2009, absolutely not, we can get a good DE, WR, there are too many holes that need to be filled to be spending so much for a quarterback, besides we have three, who says they can't be any good?"

Wed, April 1, 2009 - 10:18pm ET"Ok, Cutler is a huge crybaby. Most Jet fans Loved the Brett Favre acquisition, until it turned out to be a 1 year stand and bye bye Brett. Now we want a kid with a bad attitude and the New York media would DESTROY him. If you think his reaction to Josh Mcdaniels and the broncos orginization was bad imagine him trying to get a word out to the New York Media. Let our guys prove themself. Its time."

Wed, April 1, 2009 - 11:31pm ET"There is no doubt that theprice would be high for him but he is definately worth it. In only his 3rd yr in the league he broke Elways record for passing yyards for the broncos. We gave clemens his chance and it didn't work out. Hes a decent backup but he is not starter material. Cutler will take whatever team he goes to to a super bowl and possibly win one in his career, so JETS go get him!!!!"
Lwood Said:
Wed, April 1, 2009 - 11:49pm ET"I say lets try to get Cutler, I think we need a strong arm and a passing game. It would be nice to do both very well. I also don't understand why all of a sudden Cutler has been deemed a cry-baby. He should be upset that his team tried to back door him. He thought he was their guy then he finds out after the fact that they were willing to part with him if they landed Cassel."
JFanch Said:
Wed, April 1, 2009 - 11:51pm ET"I am a Jets fan living in Denver. I ALWAYS cheer the Jets on but watch the Broncos when I can't get the Jets game. As far as I am concerned, we should just suck it up and send Cutler to Detroit....just to make a point. The new coach mishandled the situation. So what? Time to get over it and remember how much they pay him to play a game."

Thu, April 2, 2009 - 12:25am ET"now lets c if get this right u guys dont wanna go with a gunslinging probowler with the heart n passion of lion who won with no defence or runnig game really. R U SERIOUS!!!!!! i love KC but he's da same age unproven n MIGHT turn out 2 b as good as JAY. I say we get him as long as it doesnt cost 2 much 1st rd this year n next. We still have a 1st rd pick a red shirt one by da name of gholsten"
Jeff Said:
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 12:36am ET"I just hope folks like Thomas Jones and the defensive secondary keep their dumb butt opinions to themselves. The Jets same as last year need a starting QB. True Klemens never got a full chance but looked pretty bad when he had his half chance. I wish the new coach would have put both Jet players who mouthed off and add Coles to that also in their place. "
4thSurvivor Said:
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 1:16am ET"Well right now we need a name to kick around as possibles. May as well give him a chance. I also wonder who else is being considered. I'm a loyal Jets fan, I still wear my Favre jersey with pride."

Thu, April 2, 2009 - 1:54am ET"The price for Cutler is too high , but i read the skins are offering Cambell for a 2nd rnd pick to be used in their own trade to get cutler. I wouldn't mind the Jets getting Cambell for a 2nd and adding him to the competition."
Christopher Said:
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 4:50am ET"Please, do not get Cutler, he is a good QB, no doubt, but to cost is too high, and we don't even know what we have at QB right now. Sure, our current QB's could all fail and we would have missed our opprotunity for Cutler, but I beleive you build from within. Keep our draft picks, maybe even trade down to get more, do not draft a QB. Let's see what we have, build the rest of the team."
kbookert Said:
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 7:30am ET"Of course we should get him. Farve was a waste of money and time. There was no future with him. He had only one or two years left in him any. Then we found out he didnt even have one. Cutler has a future and it would be the best move we ever made. GO GET HIM!"
Ablity Said:

Frank Atcosta Said:
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 8:36am ET"Getting Jay Cutler in a two-way deal is highly unlikely. The Broncos would probably seek a first round pick and a capable proven starting quarterback to fill Jay's vacancy for the short term. Although we may not have the depth for the two-way deal, we can possibly work out a three-way deal involving a team like the Browns. The Browns have two capable ready-to-start quarterbacks on their roster."

Thu, April 2, 2009 - 9:45am ET"Cutler is a great quarterback, but I worry about how he handles NY pressure... Folks are saying the KC couldnt beat CP last year in camp, didnt CP go on to have his best year ever, and make CBPOTY again? So if we had Brady on the bench in 00' you would have traded him for Cutler, the guys need a chance. Rex wants to see KC for himself, he knows that KC almost beat his defense... "

Thu, April 2, 2009 - 10:06am ET"I want to clarify my earlier comments; Yes we want Jay but we are not going to engage in a bidding war (CNN.com reports up to 12 teams interested). Instead will work with/develop KC, Ratliff and the rest. Also it appears Tony Gonzalez (TE, Kansas City) may be staying at KC, would offer a two year deal if he were interested, would retire as a Jet."

I understand that you're in the grieving process right now and I just wanted you to know that I'm sorry for your loss. While we may complain and disagree about what our Jets are doing or should do, please remember, it's just a game and a small part of our daily lives. Ira, take care GO JETS"
Greg from Albany Said:
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 11:04am ET"Robert-Cutler was not being treated like a 3rd string QB. He was being treated as a PROFESSIONAL. He's paid to play. If his employer wants to inquire about another QB, there's nothing wrong with that. Secondly, I am no Clemens apologist, but this team wasn't good 2 years ago. Clemens was a play or 2 away from winning 3 of those losses 2 years ago. I am guessing Rex knows a little more than I do."
35 year fan Said:
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 11:36am ET"The jets should hire jeremy bates onto the coaching staff as part of the deal to aquire Cutler. He knows what offense Cutler is comfortable with it helps him and it helps us. I dont think Cutler wants to end up in that dead end Washington Redskins situation. The jets have a brand new deluxe stadium and training facility. I'm sure Ny looks attractive to a franchise QB."
Anonymous Said:
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 11:44am ET"Anybody who doesnt want cutler on the jets doesnt want a franchise qb. This guy is a top qb and hes so young. Could anybody finally imagine having a franchise qb? Stop saying you dont want him cuz you guys are ignorant if you dont. Hes a stud bring him to the jets with this amazing dfense and give it 2 years and we will be a dynasty. "

JETS 4 LIFE Said:
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 1:18pm ET"if a chance arrives for the Jets to get in the mix they should be talking to Mangini who has 2 QB'S as Dnver would laugh at us offering Clemons and a 1st round. so if you guys who want clemons over Cutler are serious, man you need to re-think Cutler offers stability for years Clemons is in a QB 3 way competition it's a joke.and he will be beat out by ratty this camp as well. get Jay to the Jets."

Thu, April 2, 2009 - 1:58pm ET"Lets be Honest, Jay cutler is a good quarterback, but he couldnt handle the pressure in new york, he threw a tantrum because of something that happens everyday in the NFL, he doesnt see the business aspect of the sport. His bad whiney attitude is just going to send this team to the ground. Were best off keeping our picks, and besides, with a rex ryan defense, trent dilfer won a superbowl"

Thu, April 2, 2009 - 2:16pm ET"Cutler for first rounder is not an option for us. Guys, even if he get him..who will he throw to? We dont have #1 receiver, I think we should keep the pick to get big WR. I think most Jets fans are not willing to part w/ #1 pick and a good Defensive player for Cutler. If we're giving up only TJ, i might entertain that though."
JETS 4 LIFE Said:
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 3:26pm ET"all last season people were calling for Clowney, well get Cutler and throw in Clowney with Cotchery to start. I think a teams success starts with its QB then you build around him. we can have 10 yrs from this guy, or if Cutler is not dealt to us we still need to address that issue, Clemons is not our answer.chances this guy had plenty and still the brass has no confidence despite what Rex Ryan says"
JETS 4 LIFE Said:
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 3:34pm ET"I Have to say this Because alot of you are saying Cutler is a crybaby? thats garbage you hear from Mike and Mike or the cheezy columnists, who get a stir off writing that crap. the guy is a player ,a winner an athlete. think on this if your boss was trying to fill your Job behind your back would you be hell bent finding out from your HR Dept that there sorry its just business, give me a break."

Thu, April 2, 2009 - 7:48pm ET"I believe this man has paid the price for what he did. Unlike some rich folks and politicians who don't serve time for nothing they do because they have $ even though they do things worst off than this guy. I believe the NY Jets organization should take a look at this guy. I don't believe that he has ever been in any trouble with the NFL prior to his incident. Give him a chance to do commercials and volunteer work for animals across long island the entire US when he signs his contract which will be in it. just a fan on long island. uj"

Thu, April 2, 2009 - 7:55pm ET"Cutler is no longer an option. I like Ratliff. He showed promise in last years preseason and he's had a chance to learn from Favre. But don't we still need to draft a QB just incase?"
JETS 4 LIFE Said:
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 8:18pm ET"maybe be 17-20 mike career loser you may want to check the stats on Clemons, Cutler will have no problems in his career, Clemons he is a joke lets see if the guy can beat out Ratliff first off, I doubt he will and that puts us where ? like I said earlier we are 500 with current roster like it or not ! hopefuly this Clemons issue comes to an end, one way or another he is not top calibur"

Fri, April 3, 2009 - 6:19am ET"Jets and Tannenbaum BLEW this one! How do u let this guy get away? we would have been playing in the big game this year with him. now another disappointing year followed by being bounced from the seats weve been in for 20 years. What is wrong with management in the organization. Time for a major overhaul."
V.Cox Said:
Fri, April 3, 2009 - 4:25pm ET"If Harvin is available at pick 17 we need to take him. He was the best offense of player in college, why should we not pick him up? We need playmakers, and Percy Harvin is a playmaker. I don't care how small he is, he will be all pro for many years, and it should be for the Jets. If you are worry about his small frame look at Steve smith, and tell me what you think."
V.Cox Said:
Fri, April 3, 2009 - 4:36pm ET"Trade Thomas Jones, for a 1st rounder if possible and draft moreno or Beanie Wells. Take Percy Harvin with our 1st round pick. It gives play makers on the offense of side of the ball. Harvin could be used like Reggie Bush, from WR to Rb to the slot. As far as a blocking TE get one with the last pick in the draft, for that matter, use an extra OL in running situations.Pick up a pass rusher &OL. "
Scott Said:
Fri, April 3, 2009 - 4:43pm ET"Although Cutler is a good player . He has issues that bother me one being to cocky and I've seen him hollering at his teamates before . He's good yes , but that needs to be addressed before even thinking about a trade for him . You have to be great at your position before you can start pointing fingers and being cocky . I would like to see Ratliff get the nod myself I think he could be real good ."
