File Under: Mike Tannenbaum, Woody Johnson, Indianapolis Colts, Ron Meeks
01/06 — The Jets are filling out this week's head-coaching dance card very nicely.
We hear the team received permission from Indianapolis late today to interview Ron Meeks, the Colts' long-time defensive coordinator.
Owner Woody Johnson, GM Mike Tannenbaum and the Jets' coach-search team will conduct the interview at the Atlantic Health Training Center in Florham Park, N.J., on Friday.
Meeks had been an NFL assistant with Dallas (1990), Cincinnati (1992-96), Atlanta (1997-99), Washington (2000) and St. Louis (2001) before settling down with Tony Dungy. The two arrived in Indy in 2002 and, along with OC Tom Moore, began a run of seven consecutive playoff appearances. No. 7 concluded with the 23-17 overtime loss at San Diego in Sunday's AFC Wild Card Game.
Among the highlights of Meeks' defenses: they finished third in total yardage allowed in 2007, second in passing yardage allowed three times ('02, '06, '07) and in scoring defense were second in '05 and first last season. This year the Colts were 11th in total defense, 24th vs. the run, sixth vs. the pass and seventh in scoring defense.

Thu, January 8, 2009 - 1:05pm ET"Just watched the Mangini press conference. I feel for the guy being THE scape-goat, but saying that only in Cleveland they 'live football' was tacky. What the heck do we do in NY-NJ-CT, etc? Why do we go on this blog and share our pain about a team we love so much, but the front office keeps 2nd grade?! Damn - if he didn't 'feel the love' here then maybe he should be there. Disappointing Eric!"

Thu, January 8, 2009 - 1:31pm ET"Man you people are crazy! I have never seen so many names thrown around in desperation! it's funny all season i read Brett R., Clemens, Chad, WR Cowney. None of which are championship material right now. Possibly Brett R. in 2-3 yrs. Clowny was cut by G.B meaning they have solid WR. Why would real fans scream for unproven? Yet, you want proven coaches!"

Thu, January 8, 2009 - 2:13pm ET"Sam, Nice to see you agree. I would hire Brian and then let him hire Marty as the DC or an advisor."

Thu, January 8, 2009 - 2:18pm ET"I hear your loud and clear MikeMc , i hope your wrong the team will only suffer in the end (as we haven't suffered enough already) but I see a guy who wants to be a winner but is having a hard time figuring out how to take the right steps and the Tanenbaum solution is no working. they need to realize a change is needed,or the Jets will always be an average team with no title shot, hope I'm wrong"

Thu, January 8, 2009 - 2:34pm ET"I will say this much about Favre I know some of you in here want him back,I just hope for the teams sake he gets the needed surgery and the sooner the better because if he sticks around HIS WORDS because he is not ready to sit at home and do nothing, then we are in trouble his arm will produce the same results 09 we need him back 200% and hope he does the right thing for him / the team regardless "

Thu, January 8, 2009 - 3:51pm ET"Ira...For the 1st time in a long time I completely disagree with you. I know you dont want a overhaul of this team (neither do I) but I would rather have change than have B-Schott run this team. He has proved zero to become a HC of this franchise. He is the least qualified candidate of any of the potential coaches out there. He had a nice year in 2006 but has done nothing since to warrent a HC job"
Tom Spicer Said:
Thu, January 8, 2009 - 3:53pm ET"Someone wrote why do we do the same thing over & over getting a new HC instead of getting a veteran guy mabye we are crazy the definition of crazy is when you do the same thing over & over again even thou you know it does not work THE JETS ARE CRAZY JUST CRAZY I TELL YA "
Tom Spicer Said:
Thu, January 8, 2009 - 3:58pm ET"I know everyone wants to know who the new head coach is but there is a good shot we will not know until after the Ravens & the Giants are out of the playoffs so if the Giants make the Super Bowl we are not going to know until at least Mon. Feb 2nd"

Thu, January 8, 2009 - 6:14pm ET"Hey Sal..Get a life. .Woody has thrown hundreds of millions of dollars at the problem. Calls for change,change,change...What do you get when you think you can throw money at all problems?.........Same Old Jets..have some cool aide.."

Thu, January 8, 2009 - 10:58pm ET"Schotty for HC! This team needs continuity. He is innovative, prepared, and you can't argue the lineage. Why the million interviews with has beens and long shots. Clemens can be the best QB in the division with Schottty."

Fri, January 9, 2009 - 8:59am ET"Everybody has their price...............Just pay Cowher what ever it takes. I've been a fan/season ticket holder for over 40 years, and this organization has stepped backwards this year. I would have thought that we would have had a PLAN when we fired Mangini, but it seems that we just jumped into this transition without much preparation. I'm tired of being laughed at for being a Jets fan."
JET4LIFE Said:
Fri, January 9, 2009 - 10:00am ET"It dont look good with the QB senerio and the HC hunt .search looks to be bleek i am a positive person by nature and believe theres hope in anything but the Jets dont have it together anywhere in the organization from ownership to players EX: the Defense, if B S hotty is the best we can do then it will be a rough 09 and the fans w/high BP order your medicine now.I hope Management proves me wrong!"

Sat, January 10, 2009 - 4:52pm ET"I wish Woody would sell the team. He is a horrible owner. He just doesn't det it. We want a winning proven coach. He will hire someone that he can boss around and will do whatever he wants. I'll bet Woody never put on a football uniform even for halloween. Let him buy a Polo franchise, something he might know about."

Tue, January 13, 2009 - 5:31pm ET"its not the coach or the owner.its the players.players who have played with each other long enough to want the same thing that is the SUPERBOWL RING!what they need to do is to grit their teeth and dig deep inside of themselves and asked do we really want it?because if you cannot answer that question right before each game on sunday then you are going to be right where you are every year AT HOME "

Anybody who knows anything about Mr. T and the way they operate should now that this was prepared before they let Eric go. Whoever the new HC will be the Jets will have gone through a good search. And if Cowher really wanted to coach the Jets would have spoke with him."
