12/28 — The Jets get a gift at the top of the second half almost as generous as the one they gave the Dolphins at the end of the first half. Long-snapper John Denney sails his punt snap over Brandon Fields' head at midfield, so the hosts begin their first drive of the final 30 minutes from the 'Fins 28.
And after two misfires, Brett Favre, Leon Washington and Jerricho Cotchery cash in the present with eight points to put the Jets ahead, 17-14, 4½ minutes in. Favre and J-Co convert the third-and-14. Then Washington snakes his way, as he is wont to do, off his right side for a 10-yard TD run that he celebrates by hitting a short "jump shot" that banks off the camera situated on the goalpost stanchion.
Then to get up by three points, they went for two and got it, with Favre firing a low ball that Cotchery snared in the end zone.
Patrick Cobbs nearly commits a brutal error for the Dolphins on the ensuing Jay Feely kickoff, stepping into the field of play and swinging the ball toward the goal line before deciding to touch it down. Bill Leavy's officiating crew calls is a touchback, which brings Jets head coach Eric Mangini onto the field in protest. But there is no challenge as Leavy explains that the ball did not come out of the end zone completely.
Immediately Chad Pennington hits a fleaflicker to Ted Ginn down the middle. The pass is covered by Kerry Rhodes and Ty Law but the ball is underthrown and Ginn is able to make the 44-yard grab untouched.
That sets up Pennington's play action and pump fake and then pinpoint TD pass to TE Anthony Fasano, beating Abram Elam to the side of the end zone, and so Miami regains the lead, 21-17, midway through the third period.
Favre completes a third-down conversion to Laveranues Coles to make the Jets 5-for-9 on third downs, but can't find TE Dustin Keller on the next third down. Punt.
But the defense is on Pennington and the Fish as they drive toward midfield, with Rhodes rocking FB Lousaka Polite for a 2-yard loss on a third-down outlet pass. Punt right back at ya.
As the third period comes to an end, the Green & White are trying to find another touchdown drive in them.
Fourth Quarter
Washington continues to provide some spark to the offense. He goes 5 yards, then 8 yards on a direct snap, with Favre faking a snap over his head, for a first down, then Thomas Jones bursts 8 yards to the Miami 43. But Yeremiah Bell is right there with the diving PD on a Favre pass for Keller.
Then Reggie Hodges comes on, and his punt is blocked by Charlie Anderson coming up the middle to get a paw on the punt. The 'Fins take over at the Jets 49, drive little but convert on Dan Carpenter's 48-yard field goal — just ahead of Wallace Wright's block attempt — and the visitors open up a 24-17 lead over the Jets with 9:20 to play.
David Harris remained off the field on this drive, as he had been since the second quarter. The pressbox announcement is finally made that Harris suffered an ankle injury and his return to the game is doubtful.
The Ravens' lead over the Jaguars is 27-7 midway through the fourth period.
As the clock slips into eight minutes and change, then seven minutes and change, it looks bleak. LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson is called for a facemask penalty on a Jones run and it's second-and-22 at the Jets 13.
But Favre hits WR Chansi Stuckey, off the radar for several weeks, with three completions in a row. the first, for 26 yards over the middle, picks up the second-and-22, followed by 7- and 4-yard grabs for a first down at midfield.
Then more disaster as Favre, on third-and-10 at midfield, throws a ball in between Coles and Stuckey, right to CB Andre Goodman for his second pick of the day. With 4:53 left, the starch appears to be taken out of the Jets' sails with Ronnie Brown ripping off a 23-yard run out of the Wildcat formation.
The defense stiffens to force fourth-and-inches at their 39, then call their second timeout with 2:30 left. And after the TO, the 'Fins come back on to go for it. Pennington keeps and gets the inches he needed. The Jets are on life support.
And after Fields' hurried pooch punt with the block on and no Jets back deep, the Jets have 17 seconds left to go 99 yards for the tying touchdown. In other words, the season is over. After two "Stanford band" plays, neither of which is as successful as the original, the Jets have lost, 24-17.
The Dolphins have completed their comeback from 1-15 to 11-5 to oust the New England Patriots and win the AFC East title. The Jets have lost for the fourth time in their last five games to finish this once promising season at 9-7. We'll be back this evening with reports on Brett Favre and the Jets locker room.

Sun, December 28, 2008 - 9:23pm ET"I do not remember last time I had so much fun in a ups and downs season. I just hope to see new coaching staff next year, and also hope for Brett to be back from the beginning, or if not then Ratliff as QB. Happy to see the Fins and not the Patriots in playoffs, good luck! Always GO JETS!!!!!"

Sun, December 28, 2008 - 9:24pm ET"Once again another Jet season ends with a thud. This is getting redundent. Lets get rid of the entire coaching staff starting with Mangini. Sign Matt Cassel as a free agent and try to get this team on track. Cut out all the waste, only about a dozen or so players deserve to be back. I'm ready to become a Giant's fan!!!!!!!!!!!"
CFU Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 9:25pm ET"30 years of being a Jet fan and it's the same thing over and over again. Why in Gods green Earth are we still having the same problems? The Jets front office have no clue what's wrong with this team. For Starters we need a new coach lets grab that guy from the Giants DC Spagnolo. I gurantee we win a SB with that guy. Guy has heart and shows emotion. Please Hire SPAGNOLO for HEAD COACH"
Joe P. Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 9:26pm ET"How hard was it to be a Jet fan today? Truly a no-win situation. Win the game and the hideous Pats are in the playoffs. Lose and the fish are in. I feel great for Chad, but where do the Jets go from here? Clearly, the entire coaching staff other than special teams needs to go. Please Mr. Johnson ... open up that huge wallet and land Bill Cowher. The Mangini era was a bust. Ouch."
Stunna Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 9:28pm ET"ahhwell cant say i ddnt enjoy this season, wats done is done but i cant help to think that if mangini is fired it will comeback to bite us someday like the pennington situation, i doubt brett will come back even tho he ses he had a blast. i live in the uk and are there any interesting young qb's in college for the draft ??? THANKS BRETT HOPE U MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION n ppl stop complainin GO Jets"
Joe P. Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 9:30pm ET"The Bill Cowher sweepstakes have begun!! Mangini - thanks for wrecking the franchise with your total lack of emotion, creativity or personality. I don't know what was worse - watching your pathetic game plan unfold each week or watching your "deer in the headlights," say-nothing press conferences. Maybe there's a job opening at the CIA where saying absolutely nothing is a valuable asset. ;-("
JOHNNYJET Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 9:36pm ET"GET RID OF THE WHOLE COACHING STAFF!!! THIS TEAM IS PATHETIC!!!! THEY TEASE YOU ALL THE TIME!!! WHAT A DISGRACE!!!"
Linda L Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 9:39pm ET"Maybe the fans of the Jets should try learning a new offence in three weeks. You can blame the season in Favre if you want, but please remember you wins last season. One player does not make a team. You were lucky to have such a great leader. Why he wanted to play on a losing team is beyond me. You have the record you have because of him . You could also have last years record,a record you deserve"
Seth (still a Jets fan) Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 9:44pm ET"Mangini has a very stale coaching attitude, and it seems it keeps the players uninspired when they play. I don't see a lot of leadership from the head coach when it matters, during the game, making players accountable in their face immediately after mistakes. I don't see any consistency, and I definitely never saw ANY half-time adjustments in the 2nd half of the season."
JAThueson Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 9:48pm ET"What a perfect season there Jets... you saved us the playoff agony, gave us a reason to raise a toast to a new Jet coaching staff and drink heavily on NYE, gave us a post season without the Pats, jetisoned Chad, so he could come back better than ever & finish exposing Mangini's ineptitude! Oh & thanks for coming Brett, a year or two late, but that's the way the Jets always crash and burn! GO FINS"
Drew Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 9:50pm ET"I read the Parcells story this morning. He is not coming back to the AFC East as a coach. I would love to have him as he gave us some great years but I dont see it. I wouldnt mind Spagnola but I still believe Mangini is the right guy but I have not ammo to defend him this week. "
TEDDY BETANCOURT Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 9:50pm ET"After the seatle game in which they let 5 unknown, practice squad offensive linemen, dominate them i knew that this season was nothing but a big DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!! Once the media started talking about a NY Super Bowl, i knew that something like this was gonna happen. I mean don't get me wrong i was also thinking it."
Steve Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 10:00pm ET"You players, my gut wrenches for you. Keep playing hard!!!! Chad, congrats! Mangini get excited and make adjustments when something doesn't work, and Sutton get them to let you use the 4X4 with blitz packages. We let teams tear us apart with double coverage this year. It doesn't work with a three man rush allowing too much time for the QB ie denver,SF, buffalo, miami, seattle. OK QB's shredding us."
Mike Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 10:01pm ET"So you take Chad, a good QB and put him in a new program and he has success. You take Favre, a great QB and put him in a new system, and he helps pull off a better record than years prior, and now Favre is the worse thing to happen to the Jets? I have learned that the Jet's fans are the worst in the NFL this season."
Jetsman Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 10:15pm ET"Hey guys, I'm not disappointed by the loss, because of Seattle last week. But there is a silver lining in this, the PATRIOTS ARE NOT IN!!! Just remember our arch rivals are not in the playoffs and have no chance at the superbowl. And if you think the going is tough right now, just remember the Jets made the biggest upset in Superbowl history in 1969, and that we created the NFL we all know today!!"
McBragg Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 10:28pm ET"Two telling comments after the game. Farve talked about how much fun he had this year. Coles talked about how he doesn't measure a season by wins and losses, but by the relationships he has with his teamates. Need we say more about what is wrong with this team? Jets fans will lose sleep over this year's performance, but many Jets apparently won't."
Chris Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 10:28pm ET"Time for Mangini and Favre to go. We need to get a new coach that can mold a young QB and then let's see what we have in Clemens, Ratliff and Ainge. If they are not the answer we should go after Cassel if New England does not franchise him, Its time to build around a young Qb like Atlanta and the Ravens did."
pk Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 10:31pm ET"I use to go see the Jets at Shea all the time and it was a kick in the head to the fans, when they moved to NJ! This year I paid $25 to park 3 miles from the stadium. Now they have moved the team completely to NJ and have made it too expensive for the fans, THEN THEY TURN OUT CRAP TEAMS for the money they charge, forget it I'm rooting for the Bills, they are the only NY team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
terrance Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 10:36pm ET"hhmmm!! well i guess it's good to see chad finally get through his second full season of the nine he's been in the nfl. no matter it will be a short lived victory for the dolphins. chad will never win a super bowl, he's not that caliber qb. dink and dunk, under throw the long ball, nice adjustments ginn jr and fasano. nice work parcells, it is great to see the pats at home for the playoffs."
JP Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 10:42pm ET"Here is my take: Fire Mangenius, Schott, Sutton and the gang. See if Favre is ok, if he is not, he retires, if he is, have him come back. We have QB's ready in reserve - get another one for insurance. Check into Cowher, Spagnulo, and the Parcel's deal (I hope) - get a head coach, hire Romeo as D-Cord., find O-cord. Get speed receiver, pass rusher, CORNER, safety! Then build it. SB in 2 yrs."
Farvefan4ever Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 10:46pm ET"Wow, lots of people here critized Favres fans for not keeping their loyalty to "the team" What is going on here??? Yes, Favre has thrown more than his share of picks lately, but give the guy a break. He gave you a good season-better than last year, and no one can tell me he didnt play hard. Maybe more of the problem IS the call playing. Yeah, the season ended on a low, but what a ride!"
Alan Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 11:08pm ET"I think theres alot of qbs in the draft comping up that we can trade down to get, i think gholston will fight for his spot in the preseason next year, finally having a real training camp under his belt, we need to hire a offensive coordinator, that knows how to use Thomas Jones and Leon Washington, i mean our combo is better then carolinas, and tennesee, we have the best comp just no a o cord."
Pete Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 11:08pm ET"I guess us Mangini haters in the off season weren't just bad fans but educated ones. This season was awful. It will take years to get rid of this 3-4 mess with high priced players that nobody wants. He got everything he asked for this season and tanked it. By the way, please keep a rb in the backfield on 3rd and 1. Just pretend you might run it. Bye Mangini. Thanks for wrecking my team."
Tanner Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 11:21pm ET"I read somewhere maybe it was the ny post. It said the Jets should changed there name to JAWS which stand for Just Another Wasted Season. Its definitely true. Hey how olds Vinny? Think hes interested? Also id like to see Chrebet back in the slot. Well only about 252 days till roughly when the 2009 reg season starts. "

Sun, December 28, 2008 - 11:37pm ET"Chatter box New Yorkers such as T above only need to watch todays game to determine what they lost, and what they didn't gain by releasing Pennington. Favre is done and now New York knows what Green Bay knew, his glory days are gone, and now its time to move on. As for Pennington and the Super Bowl, you just never know. If Eli Manning made it, Pennington may bring some more surprises."
JustAFan Said:
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 11:40pm ET"NYJets, Thanks for an exciting season! MUCH improved season over last. You may not have won some games that you were "supposed" to, but you won some AMAZING games! As a newer fan, I'm not "sick of the same ol Jets", I am excited for a team that can improve with more playing time together, and look forward to next season. PLEASE come back Favre, the Jets would have a much worse record w/out you!!"
JP Said:
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 12:21am ET"I have to agree with the Favre fans - I am one. I hope that he can come back. Let us see what this injury is, let's remember - during the games the JETS went 8-3 - HOW MANY TIMES WAS BRET ON HIS BUTT AFTER A HARD HIT? Many times! I would not be surprised if he has been hurt for the past 5 games but still wanted to get out there for the fans. Coaching is the main problem. Let's see the MRI."
lcantor Said:
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 12:24am ET"Generally, I agree with Stunna; and a little Brit shall lead them? To me, the bad guy in all this is the GM. The Brett-Chad exchange gave us a remarkably entertaining season in exchange for a competitive franchise for five years. I, too, thank you Brett; I don't for one second think you left any of the skills you had in the locker room. But I think this is it: Matt Cassel, anyone?"
Abe Said:
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 12:33am ET"Cobb came out of the end zone, but no-call. Fins went on to score a TD. Simms said is a reviewable play. After the kickoff, there was a TV timeout, long enough for the Jets staff to check it out. I did as well. When you pause it, Cobbs brings the ball in front of the foot that is in the field. No questions. Where was the red flag? Mangini and staff blew the game on that one play."

Mon, December 29, 2008 - 12:48am ET"Frank I'm not against starting over or even changing coaches, inspite of what some have said on here. But I did say that can be dangerous, the wrong choice and we're gonna have a coaching turnstile. Tell me who they would replace him with I might be ok with it. But whether they keep him or not I want BOTH coordinators gone. And I agree with their age, after next year, wholesale changes."

Mon, December 29, 2008 - 1:29am ET"On the subject of Favre, I said early in the season that I felt he was hurt and I was surprised he finally admitted it. I only want him back if he can be 100% and we change OC's. He has no clue how to run an offense. 3rd & 1inch or 3rd & 30 - throw a bomb! In the last 5 games we only ran on 3rd about 8 times and 2 were by BF and 2 were by TJ trying to run out the clock against Buffalo and ...."
Ray Said:
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 1:41am ET"...and one was by LW on a 3rd & 19. So in essence we called a 3rd down run three times in the last 5 games!!! This team was constructed in the off season to be able to run the ball and control the clock, but somehow our OC didn't realize this. We have the leading rusher in the AFC and over those 5 games he averaged 14.6 carries a game. Anyone see the problem here? "
John Mack Said:
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 5:04am ET"When the jets gave ben graham the flick i said that it would come back to bite them - the block against Hodges' punt probably cost the Jets the game and a place in the playoffs. Lesson - if it ain't broke, don't fix it......Graham finished above Hodges in the NFL player rankings for punters - Graham in 16th place and Hodges in 29th. "

Mon, December 29, 2008 - 6:36am ET"Mr. Johnson please keep Mike T. He has done an awesome job acquiring talent. Thomas Jones, what a heist. Leon, Faneca, Jenkins, Keller, Mangold. He had another heist in there two. Just can't remember who. Problem with Mangini is this...unable to make adjustments and do a proper SELF evaluation. He can't figure out what's wrong and keeps doing the same things. If it's not working change it"

Seems they hire alot of retired Jets players (Brian Cox, Jerome Henderson, Rick Lyle) Maybe Browning Nagle, Ken O'Brien or Neil O'Donnel will be the QB coach next season??? Although id love 2 see Ronnie Lott as a DB coach (He's my fav of all time)"

Jim Said:
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 8:56am ET"Like every other of the 40 years I've been disgusted, all of us fans pay the price. Bringing back the head coach would be the same as the Mets bringing back Willie Randolph after they crashed and burned. Both Coslet and Carroll were fired after seasons like this. Why should Mangini get a pass!!"

Mon, December 29, 2008 - 9:38am ET"yes i see the problem Ray and coud not agree more favre back if 110% with mini camps and new coaches why Mangini or Shottty let Favre throw as much blows me away TJ could have easily had 1700 1900 yds if he got the ball more and favre's am/shoulder would not be a discussion. we need change in the coaching dept bad Eric did not look like a coach sun,he looked like us the fans no plan no idea"
Mike Jet Vet Said:
Mon, December 29, 2008 - 10:11am ET" Yes Ray we do see the problem been saying it all year . You have the leading rusher in the league & throw on every Short & 1 or inches ,, That's the game plan & it comes in from the COACHES .. Then when we can't convert what do they do on the next short & 1 or less same call ..Can 't make this crap up I'm telling you its like a dream & you never wake up"

This isn't sour grapes, it is the voice of experience. Beware of over achieving your first year of rebuilding. Next year you get a tougher schedule, a much lower draft pick and no one takes you for granted. We saw first hand with mangini, Dallas got to see with Parcells and..."

As far a Bschott returning and calling plays...are they serious?? That press conference they did was a joke. Favre returning? who cares He brought some great things to the org like making them believe they could win other than that its like he played for the other team. scoring points for them. "

The main reason Cowher has been so successful is Dick Le beau & his defence The Offence never matched the same intensity Lots of OCs out there that can get the Offence going but Defence wins championships Period lets do this go get Le beau & watch us fly .. Please Please don't get Romero Crennel Please NO .. It will repeat the mistake we made with Mangini "

Mon, December 29, 2008 - 8:27pm ET"Frank, Sutton may have been instrumental in developing our D before it was the 3-4, but it is painfully obvious he is not able to run this defense. So if whoever takes the reins does not run the 4-3 D, then Sutton must go also, period. The fact that Mangini kept him around was just one more of his failures."

Mon, December 29, 2008 - 9:24pm ET"To Eric Mangini, Personal relationships over results gets coaches fired. You can take Coles, Law, Favre, Gholston and both the coordinators with you. Hope you enjoyed the ride. God bless..."
