11/25 — It's probably a mark of respect that the NFL's four weekly partner awards feature only one Jet up for honors this week after three were finalists in last week's awards.
After all, maybe it's a sign that the Jets have truly come together as a team, with everyone in a starring role in the 34-13 toppling of the Titans and therefore no one shining brighter than a teammate so as to be considered for such mundane things as individual weekly awards.
That's the way I'll choose to look at it.
In any event, the only Jet in the balloting this week is again head coach Eric Mangini. He's one of three finalists for the Motorola Coach of the Week award, in the running with the Giants' Tom Coughlin and the Raiders' Tom Cable. You can vote here for Coach of the Week now through Friday at 11 a.m. EST.
I'd advise Green & White fans to vote early and often for the coach of their choice. If Mangini is anointed this week, that will be great recognition for one of the biggest wins of this regular season. If not, what can we do? You know it won't bother the coach. Mangini feels the same about receiving personal honors as he does about providing hype for the media types in these parts as they promote the quite premature concept of a Jets-Giants Super Bowl.
"I guess I look at it totally different," Mangini said politely Monday afternoon. "I look at it as a five‑game season and the next team. I know that's not flashy or exciting or any of those things. It's a long time to go before the end of the season. It's over a quarter of the season still left to play.
"So many things can happen. I've been part of all those different scenarios over the course of my career. The most important thing to me is us improving. I’m happy for the Giants. I haven't gotten to see very many of their games, but it's really all Jets all the time."
Love That Field Position
Nice job by CBS' crew digging up the nugget that, until Cortland Finnegan's interception for the Titans, Jets opponents had started 43 consecutive series in their own territory. The last time an opponent started a drive in "plus territory" was Kansas City after rookie Brandon Flowers' interception return started the Chiefs at the Jets 38 en route to a tying touchdown.
Something the Eye Network didn't tell us was that in the five-game winning streak, the Jets started nine drives in opponents' territory compared to the opponents' two on the Jets' side of the 50.
Here's field position looked at another way, the Jets' average drive start since the start of their current seven-wins-in-eight-games run is their 35-yard line. For the opponents it's their 28. That's a 7-yard bonus in every exchange of drives in the last eight games.

Go to the playoffs first, then win a game of two before we anoint anyone on this team. Sorry to rain on the parade, but if fans of any franchise should know about "counting chickens" early it should be Jets fans! PS: Anyone remember 10-1 & Paul Maguire? "

But I believe the Jets beat the Titans specifically because ot the coaching and play calling....Keep it simple, stop changing things up every week, make the other team adjust to your team and this team will be facing the Giants...This is the only team built to stop the Giants. Lets see our coach walks into NE and beats the "best" coach in the NFL and then backs in up by strolling into Tenn and absolutely smacking the "best" team in the NFL in the mouth. Their "great" coach had no answer for anything we did from the coin flip. The award means nothing but he is still our Mangenius no matter what the dumb league says!! The Kool-Aid is on tap boys!! Green of course!!"

Tue, November 25, 2008 - 8:16pm EDT"Randy, great article again. We don't see Jet players make the weekly highlight films and top record list because we utilize all the players on the field rather than one or two. That to me IS the winning combination that will get us though the next 5 games and beyond. While I was at the NFL.com, I saw that Klecko didn't make the 25 finalists for the HOF. Sorry Joe. Jets 34-20 GO JETS get it done!"

As much as I've criticized his play calling the past 2 yrs, I gotta hand it to him for Sunday's game plan, it was brilliant! It helps that we now have the horses to pull it off. I hope Denver's weak pass D doesn't tempt him. Keep the same pass/run ratio, maybe some more mid range passes but trust the ponies to get the YACs. Go Schotty!"

Is Brett growing his beard as a good luck item--like I am not going to shave while we are winning? I just think he's a hunk and I loved his stubble length at the ESPY's. See, shallow --he's doing great and I love him and his new team!!"
Randy Lange Said:

Wed, November 26, 2008 - 2:45am EDT"I am watching the replay on the NFL Network now and it reminded me of something. After Favre's pick, Tennesse drove to our 35 and then punted? Bironas easily has the leg for a 52 yarder. I thought Fisher did us a favor on that one. In the long run don't think it would have mattered, just seemed strange."
Randy Lange Said:
"True about Rob Bironas' leg, Ray, but if he missed from 53 yards, the Jets, ahead, 7-0, would have had the ball at their 43. As it was, they went from their 20 to a field goal and a 10-0 lead. Just risk/reward at that point, I think."

Wed, November 26, 2008 - 11:10am EDT"unclejoe, Yes Cimini's article was good and the pats win that year up in Foxboro was big. But the real big win was in KC, winning 20-17. Dwayne Gordon had a INT for a TD and Glenn had a big KO return that set up the winning FG by Hall in a nasty rain."

I heard Cotchery explaining how Mangini coaches and practices hustle plays and conditioning and how it can win games and close out games...At this point who cares about Clowney? Our offense is firing on all cylinders... Anyone else waiting to see Mangold manhandle D-Rob on Sunday??"
Ray Said:
Wed, November 26, 2008 - 12:29pm EDT"Yeah Randy I thought about the field position thing too. I guess I was surprised just because with how well their D has been playing this year and up to that point in the game that he wasn't willing to take the risk. Then again Bironas had missed 3 of his last 5 kicks at that point. Glad I get to sit here and just pick these decisions apart!!"

Wed, November 26, 2008 - 1:29pm EDT"I want to give props to the guys that do not get alot of publicity 1 Coles this guy is money he catches everything & it takes a few guys to take him down he is tuff as nails 2 Cotchery the play where he caught the ball against his helmet vs the Pats & the play where he streched the ball over the goal line 1 word CRAZY 3 Keller this guy is a stud already his upside is sick he could be the best TE "
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, November 26, 2008 - 1:36pm EDT"in the game the 3 hardest spots to learn are QB, WR & center they say year 3 is when WR'S start to get it well in year 1 the kid is a beast. The whole O Line Brick, Faneca, Mangold, Moore & Woody I wanted to mention all by name cause the O Line never gets the spot light. On D Elam this kid is becoming a play maker every game he gets a pick or a forced fumble or a fumble recovery he is comin up big"
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, November 26, 2008 - 1:41pm EDT"Ellis is the leader of this D he gets no props from anyone in the 4 3 this guy is a 10 sack per year player he gets it done. Coleman is stout in the run game he makes tons of tackles he is a blue collar guy. Barton is the man he is always around the ball making big hits he brings his lunch pail. Pace what can you say he is the perfect 3 4 OLB he stops the run & can rush the passer & last but not "
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, November 26, 2008 - 1:51pm EDT"& last but not least Thomas he was man enough to admit he did not put in the time & effort last year & this year he is playing like he did 2 years ago. I really feel the Jets could win the whole thing I have not felt like this since 1998 I thought they could do it in the past but not like this if things for right for us we will not have to play on the road until the AFC title game "
CEDRIC Said:
Wed, November 26, 2008 - 2:20pm EDT"I think Farve may have taught Shotty & Mangini that you can be gameplan specific with over thinking yourself, football isnt rocket science. I also have to give Mr.T & the scouting staff for getting the personnel to help develop what Mangini is trying to do. I hate the Media hype, but im glad they are respecting us. Just let us win a playoff game."

Wed, November 26, 2008 - 4:41pm EDT"Frank as much as I disagreed with your early assessment of the coaching staff I always appreciated the facts you stated to back up your opinions. I am equally impressed with your ability to change your mind as the season progressed.I think it is easier for Mangini to be tough & then lighten up rather than the opposite path.I truly hope he remains our coach for many years, consistancy is the key."
Ed in Tucson Said:
Wed, November 26, 2008 - 5:03pm EDT"Hey Mr Green T, looks like you’ve been smoking some of that green T. Sheldon & the rest, forget Clowney this year. It’s hard enough to get PT for all our talent as it is. The deep threat is there. Leon is a threat to take a short pass all the way & Keller has the potential to be a deep threat. The other thing is that long passes lead to quick scores or ints, not good for ball control. Beat Broncos"
Drew Said:
Wed, November 26, 2008 - 6:40pm EDT"MikeMc....That is the exact point I have been trying to get through Big Frank's Texas head for over a year now. Mangini had to change the attitude of the team once Herm left. I liked Herm but he ran a easy camp and I think it led to our injury issues in 2005. I am really happy to see the team and Mangini getting some respect....Especially from my boy Frank!!"

I'm not saying the guys are bad, but it just gets annoying when an opposing team is down big time, and are able to suddenly hit receiver after receiver with virtually no resistence. Too many times receivers are left wide open. I'm worried the Broncos have realized that."
