File Under: Eric Mangini, Tom Coughlin, field position, Tom Cable, Motorola Coach of the Week

11/25 — It's probably a mark of respect that the NFL's four weekly partner awards feature only one Jet up for honors this week after three were finalists in last week's awards.

After all, maybe it's a sign that the Jets have truly come together as a team, with everyone in a starring role in the 34-13 toppling of the Titans and therefore no one shining brighter than a teammate so as to be considered for such mundane things as individual weekly awards.

That's the way I'll choose to look at it.

In any event, the only Jet in the balloting this week is again head coach Eric Mangini. He's one of three finalists for the Motorola Coach of the Week award, in the running with the Giants' Tom Coughlin and the Raiders' Tom Cable. You can vote here for Coach of the Week now through Friday at 11 a.m. EST.

I'd advise Green & White fans to vote early and often for the coach of their choice. If Mangini is anointed this week, that will be great recognition for one of the biggest wins of this regular season. If not, what can we do? You know it won't bother the coach. Mangini feels the same about receiving personal honors as he does about providing hype for the media types in these parts as they promote the quite premature concept of a Jets-Giants Super Bowl.

"I guess I look at it totally different," Mangini said politely Monday afternoon. "I look at it as a five‑game season and the next team. I know that's not flashy or exciting or any of those things. It's a long time to go before the end of the season. It's over a quarter of the season still left to play.

"So many things can happen. I've been part of all those different scenarios over the course of my career. The most important thing to me is us improving. I’m happy for the Giants. I haven't gotten to see very many of their games, but it's really all Jets all the time."

Love That Field Position

Nice job by CBS' crew digging up the nugget that, until Cortland Finnegan's interception for the Titans, Jets opponents had started 43 consecutive series in their own territory. The last time an opponent started a drive in "plus territory" was Kansas City after rookie Brandon Flowers' interception return started the Chiefs at the Jets 38 en route to a tying touchdown.

Something the Eye Network didn't tell us was that in the five-game winning streak, the Jets started nine drives in opponents' territory compared to the opponents' two on the Jets' side of the 50.

Here's field position looked at another way, the Jets' average drive start since the start of their current seven-wins-in-eight-games run is their 35-yard line. For the opponents it's their 28. That's a 7-yard bonus in every exchange of drives in the last eight games.

"Right now I'm loving everything about the Jets. The ONLY thing that still kinda irritates me is the pass defense. I'm not saying the guys are bad, but it just gets annoying when an opposing team is down big time, and are able to suddenly hit receiver after receiver with virtually no resistence. Too many times receivers are left wide open. I'm worried the Broncos have realized that."

"Drew my little Chihuahua pet I unlike you and some of the others are not a Mangini bobblehead. So yes you are right I am currently showing Mangini some love that he did not deserve earlier in the year. I am still queasy since the Raiders loss and near Chief's fiasco is still quite fresh. I will keep my vebal barbs sharpened however just in case! "
