11/21 — Fans of trench warfare have got to be going ga-ga for Sunday's Jets-Titans game. Nick Mangold and company vs. Albert Haynesworth when the Jets have the ball, Kris Jenkins vs. Kevin Mawae and his sidekicks when the Titans have it.
Needless to say, Joe Klecko is looking at these matchups from the defensive side of the line. And you can almost hear his juices flowing as he talks about it.
"Jenkins and Haynesworth, they both have what you need to be good defensive tackles and that's mean streaks," said Klecko, the former Jets DT-NT-DE whom Eric Allen and I caught up with for this week's "Jets Two-Minute Drive" radio show, now up on newyorkjets.com. "Either one of 'em, you wouldn't want to meet them in a dark alley.
"I think that's one of the prerequisites for you to be good. These guys are mean guys. They're the kind of guys you want to go into battle with."
Klecko remains a knowledgeable Jets fan two decades after his playing career ended, but like a professional analyst, he wasn't picking a DT winner in these parallel battles.
"Kris Jenkins, he's in better shape than he'd been the last couple of years in Carolina. He's played absolutely tremendously here for the Jets, not only against the run but he's been a force in the pass rush department also," Klecko said.
"And Haynesworth's the same way. These are guys, if you're talking fourth-and-1, I really hope the offensive coordinators don't think they can run at them, that they can prove something by being macho, because those guys will shut it down right away."
I lobbed Joe a softball, asking him if he thought this battle of first-place teams will come down to whose mountain in the middle of the D-line can stop the other team's big-bopper backs better.
"Do I believe whoever stops the run better is going to win this game? I believe that in just about every game," he said. "Because, unlike the West Coast offenses that are built for the pass leading to the run rather than the run leading to the pass, I believe these two teams are old-fashioned teams. They have good backs and good offensive lines. Whoever's going to be able to stop the run here I believe will fare better."
As far as how Klecko is faring, he's doing well. I've seen him more these days than I have in recent entire years, around the Atlantic Health Training Center and at Charlie Brown's in Chatham for a recent "Inside the Jets" radio show, and that's not coincidence.
Joe is one of the 133 players, coaches and contributors on the Pro Football Hall of Fame's preliminary list for the Class of 2008. The Hall's voters are in the process of paring this list to 25 modern-era semifinalists, and that next list is expected to be revealed in the next week or two.
Klecko talked with us about his Hall prospects this time around, and he's got a great attitude about the process that can play mind games with the best of proud former tough guys. He even discussed his new role these days as "Coach Klecko." Check out this week's "Jets Two-Minute Drive" for a listen to this charter member of the New York Sack Exchange.

He can beat up people and will put a hurt on Mawae this weekend. Did anyone see when Jenks Blew up the Pat's center, and knocked him into the RB for a 3 yard loss? Jenkins is going to be rested and ready Sunday. Look out Kev."

My only time I actually saw Joe play was in the early 80's against the Packers when he sacked Dickey 3 times in one game. With the Jets getting all this press, it should increase Joe's chances of getting in the HOF. Jets 8-4, Titans 10-1, Final 31-17 Jets WIN. Go JETS!"

The Jets have proven they have the heart and believe they can win. I am not convienced they have the depth of talent and experience in enough positions to win a superbowl. But I still believe it is possible-after all I am a JETS fan. PS. I do not like PSLs"

I have no doubt in my mine the JETS will beat the TItans this week. After beating NE last week we have a full steam of momentum going ahead and running over the competition. Mangini just get the guys to play 4 quarters and hard nose football. Make Collins eat dirt. Jetsfan 4life"

Sat, November 22, 2008 - 12:27pm EDT"Yeah, this defintiely the game of the season. It would be really cool if the Jets wear the throwback Titans jerseys. "Clash of the Titans". Old Titans crush new Titans! Plus with the darker helmets, Brett will be able to see the receivers better, since Tennessee has white helmets."
Wayne Said:
Sat, November 22, 2008 - 12:29pm EDT"Klecko was & still is the prototypical lineman in the NFL. His motor never stopped running & he gave 100% on every play. I'd love to 11 guys like him on my defense anytime. Rendy, has Joe ever addressed the Jets & imparted some of his knowledge & expertise on what it takes to get over the hump & win games like this. It would be tremendous to have a guy like guy who played in the trenches to do so"
Randy Lange Said:
"Wayne, I'm not sure if Klecko has been one of the members of the Mangini Speakers Bureau, but you're right. Joe has a way of firing people up 20 years after he last strapped it on in an NFL game."

Sat, November 22, 2008 - 4:13pm EDT"i see a lot of optimism on this board about this weekend, i too feel they will win. we are a team with "one mind" ...we are a team of old jet players, and the newbies, who came here only for one thing TO WIN! that is what makes our team great. i am a new fan from green bay, and so appreciative of all the players, and fans, who came from all around the NFL...WE are the team of DESTINY!"
richard Said:
Sat, November 22, 2008 - 7:17pm EDT"Well, guys, I see this as a very tight game if everybody brings all their tools and uses them. BUT, the JETS can win IF they keep the turnovers down, the stupid penalties down, (like false starts & encroachments & personal fouls) and keep their motors running all the way to the 00 on the game clock 4th 1/4. Go, guys and bring it home!!!"
sal Said:
Sat, November 22, 2008 - 8:37pm EDT"Randy, Are the Jets really a hit in the mouth team, which they have done, or are they a west coast stly sort team? which they have done, or are they a stech em out team,( thought hey havnt done it recently team). I dont know exactly what they will do from week to week, and I dont think Tenn. does either. They gelled so fast they can do it all at times"
sal Said:
Sat, November 22, 2008 - 8:42pm EDT"or are they a dink and dunk team, which they do really well, or let mr. Jones run tyou. I hope that Shotty who drove me crazy, until I got it,drives them all crazy, which i believe this staff can do, So fans dont feel alone, that what makes coach and staff tick, consistantly"

Sun, November 23, 2008 - 7:28am EDT"First of all, I hope you make the "Hall" this time Joe! I've been proudly wearing my #73 Jersey to games since before you retired! I see the team building, week by week. The lines on both sides getting more cohesive. If teh key players JUST do what they do we have an excellent chance today. Prediction- Old Titans 17- New Titans 10! Go Jets!"

Sun, November 23, 2008 - 10:44am EDT"This is what's gonna happen in this game: The Jets are going to blow out the Titans. They could've done that to the Pats but took their foot off the gas. They've learned their mistake. The offense isn't explosive but prolific. They don't get a lot of Big plays but can march down the field almost at will.."

I truly hope he gets his due in Canton because he was an absolute beast. As far as this weeks matchup in the pit (trenches for you laymen) this has the potential to be a classic, I can't wait."
