11/20 — We postponed our normal midday blog on Coach Mangini's news conference because he had a short session with reporters today. But here are a few points to ponder.
In Mangini's opening remarks, he noted that today's practice would be primarily working on third downs. "That's an area we've made quite a bit of improvement on since the bye offensively," he said.
Word. The Jets' six games from Cincinnati through New England have produced a 48.1 percent conversion rate on third downs that is the third-best third-down rate for a six-game in-season span in the last 10 years. Here are the best six-game stretches of chain-moving since 1999:
| Season | Span | Conv. | Att. | Pct. |
| 2004 | Games 12-PO1 | 41 | 84 | 48.8 |
| 2007 | Games 1-6 | 40 | 82 | 48.8 |
| 2008 | Games 5-10 | 39 | 81 | 48.1 |
| 2004 | Games 11-16 | 41 | 86 | 47.7 |
| 2002 | Games 13-PO2 | 38 | 80 | 47.5 |
| 2006 | Games 11-16 | 41 | 88 | 46.6 |
The leading third-down players for the Jets in this span: Leon Washington with nine conversions, Jerricho Cotchery with eight and rookie TE Dustin Keller with seven.
For curious minds that want to know, the last time the Jets went better than 50 percent on third downs in six games, it was from Game 12 vs. Carolina through the first playoff game vs. Jacksonville in 1998, when the Jets converted at a 52.9 percent rate (46-for-87).
Mangini also had words of praise and awe for coach Jeff Fisher, whom he will try to beat upside the head in Sunday's Jets-Titans matchup. Fisher is now in the thick of his 15th season coaching the Tennessee franchise that was called the Houston Oilers when he first took over in 1994.
"It’s incredible," the third-year Jets boss said of that run. "You don’t see that very much anymore, the Don Shulas, the Tom Landrys, guys that were there 25, 20 years. It seems to be much rarer than it used to be. It’s a real testament to Jeff. He’s done it in different places in terms of where the team was, all different types of players, young, old. It’s been the whole gamut and he’s been consistently successful. It’s impressive."
The I-Report
Today's injury report came out a little after 4 p.m. There was no change for the Jets but an interesting set of migrations on the Titans' list.
Tennessee had several starters listed as not participating in practice Wednesday, among them LB Keith Bulluck (chest) and RB LenDale White (calf). And Kyle Vanden Bosch, who pressured the Jets in last season's Game 15, was limited by a groin injury.
Seems Fisher was just resting his big guns. Today Bulluck, White and Vanden Bosch are all listed as participating fully in practice.
But on the other hand, DE Jevon Kearse appeared on today's list with a knee injury that held him out of practice.

The Jets will win a low scoring game, because neither def will give up rush yds or many pts, but I think we can shut down w/Revis/Law/Lowery.. don't think they can match up w/our top 3 receivers.. Go Jets!"
Randy Lange Said:
"FrankieJoe, Coach Mangini has offered no definitive word on David Harris' availability for Sunday, but he was listed as not practicing today for the second day this week."

Thu, November 20, 2008 - 7:43pm EDT"I am glad the Titans are going to be at full strength. I want to be beat this undefeated team fully loaded so there's no excuses. We have to find a way to get pressure on that statue Collins. A win on Sunday and even the Jet haters will take notice. "

Thu, November 20, 2008 - 7:51pm EDT"Randy, Yes that 98 team was sweet. Amazing in todays NFL that Fisher has hung around for 15 years. He is a great coach. Also surprising was the 07 3rd down conv %. And that injury list for the Titans don't worry they will all be ready to go come Sunday."

Thu, November 20, 2008 - 8:09pm EDT"I haven't posted in while but I've been reading every article here on the Radar. The game this weekend is going to come down to whoever has the ball last. Everyone around here (RI) is saying that the Titans are going to win big but I think that's a bunch of jealous Pats fans talking. We have such a momentum going right now, plus it'll be hard for the Titans to deal with the pressure of going 16-0."

Thu, November 20, 2008 - 8:13pm EDT"thanks for the update but i aint buying the IR status of the titans how long was Brady on the IR with the shoulder i think they took the rest to keep pace with the jets for sunday i hope mangini and his staff studied the films and are ready for all the titans will throw at us cause they are BUT the JETS have what it takes to shut em down 60 min if any JET checks this post we believe in you GOJETS."
Vince-Florida Said:
Thu, November 20, 2008 - 9:37pm EDT"Go Jets! Randy, that was a good retrospective on the Oilers/Titans, but the past also says a lot about QB Collins who used to throw a lot of interceptions, once upon a time. Well, it could happen again if we gameplan like we did for the Arizona game. Remember rushing only 3 guys on Defense, and Revis' interception? And then we need a fast receiver like David Clowney way down the field on Offense. "
Kev Said:
Thu, November 20, 2008 - 10:13pm EDT"I don't think the TITANS have played any team as good as the so far this season. Randy do you have any update on WR CLOWNY? TITANS 10-1."
Randy Lange Said:
"Nothing new on DC, Kev."
Alan Said:
Thu, November 20, 2008 - 10:22pm EDT"The real match-up in this game is Mangini vs. Fisher. The best coaching job wins this game. If the Jets put Collins on his back 3 or 4 times and Mangini & co. can come up with a little Offensive trickery (i.e. Keller and Leon Deep, Brad Smith pass/run) than I think we can win handily... unfortunately, Fisher and the Titans are fully capable of doing the same. I expect a great game."

Ira Said:
Fri, November 21, 2008 - 7:33am EDT"It appears that Law will start this week. What i would do since the LB's have had problems all year covering the TE. I would let Revis and Law man up and let Poteat/Barrett cover the slot WR and then bring in Lowery to replace a LB to cover the TE.And bring the heat to force Collins out of the pocket. They must attack Collins like they did Warner in the 1st half of the Cards game. GO JETS!!!!"

Now that he is with the Jets, I am a Jets fan because I so love Favre. He is awesome. I am 80, & I so love Favre that I watch any game he plays in when I can receive them. I watched you play NE and the game was awesome. I yelled at the TV. GO Jets. "

PS, no cowboy fans on this sight.True NY jet fans only."

Fri, November 21, 2008 - 11:48am EDT"Bo Scaife is a favorite target for Collins & he needs to be covered by someone other than Pace! Ira I like your idea-but that doesn't really help the Run D, which is more important. If we play more 4 man fronts w/ Pouha/Mosley I would do that! I don't have any respect for McCariens like I said earlier I hope somebody pops him. Revis & Law can handle the WR's in Man. More CB & zone blitzing please"

Fri, November 21, 2008 - 12:51pm EDT"Good work Randy. All i know is that if we get a big lead on them Bob Sutten better not call prevent def. Prevent def. does not stop anybody all it does is give th QB more time and more ime for Wr to break loose. Hey RANDY do you know how many YRDs and TDs we gave in Prevent def. Vs our reguler def. play. thanks"
Randy Lange Said:
"deep, I don't have that broken down, and besides, the numbers would not satisfy some fans who think the Jets at New England were in a prevent the entire second half or the entire fourth quarter, which they weren't."
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, November 21, 2008 - 1:16pm EDT"Even after beating the Pats, Bills & Phins all on the road & beating 1 of the best teams in the NFC the Cards by putting up 56 points on them we still do not get the national respect of all of the media. IF WE BEAT THE TITANS THIS WEEK WE TAKE OUR RESPECT THEY WILL HAVE TO GIVE US OUR PROPS "
Patrick from PA Said:
Fri, November 21, 2008 - 1:17pm EDT"The exp. Lowery has gained so far will no doubt benefit him in the future but at this juncture of the season now is not the time for rookie mistakes and blown coverages. I like the kid, but right now he is a liability on D and teams are exploiting that weakness. We need the more exp. players on the field like Poteat and Barrett. Without question Law should start and please no Ahmad Carroll. "
Dennis Navin Said:
Fri, November 21, 2008 - 1:25pm EDT"I am a Jets guy from 1963.Loved the Super III rush. A lot of down time since then. Might have something going here. It all starts and ends in the trenches.Looks like we got a go O line and a D line. Playoffs could be a real deal this year. Keepen" the old fingers crossed. Go Jets!"
Peyton, WI Said:
Fri, November 21, 2008 - 1:44pm EDT"Randy, outstanding article...The leading 3rd-down players for the Jets: Washington with 9 conversions, Cotchery with 8, and rookie TE Keller with 7. 3rd down conversions = ball control and greater time of possession. This is how we can beat the Titans. Having 3 great players that share the most 3rd down conversions has to give the DC of the Titans a headache. Or will it open up to another PLAYER?"
Tom Said:
Fri, November 21, 2008 - 3:49pm EDT"I agree. I think a good reason we let the Pats get us last game was because of Lowery's blown coverages. Take in hand he's only a rookie. But going for a playoff run we can't really afford those types of rookie mistakes."
Kevin Magee Said:
Fri, November 21, 2008 - 4:02pm EDT"Randy,..could you please e-mail this article to the writers at the green bay press gazette. This is the way a true sports writer is supposed to write about,...all they write about is the sale of Brett Favres house and other nonsense. Thank you,..keep up the great articles!!!"

Fri, November 21, 2008 - 4:06pm EDT"Defencive plan for the Titans .5 man line we need Mosley lined up with Jenkins it will create miss matches on protection .. Being our LB's have so much trouble in coverage .. Have 2 LB's & 4 DB's then bring the heat from the edges with DB recipe for success You heard it here GO JETS"
BP Said:
Fri, November 21, 2008 - 7:16pm EDT"Leon Washington could be the key to this game. I think if the Titans can't stop Leon from getting us good field position, we will win without a lot of struggle. GO JETS!"
