11/11 — The Jets are laying down the Law — again.
Two and a half seasons after veteran cornerback Ty Law came up with 10 interceptions in his only season as a Jet, then headed off to Kansas City for two seasons, head coach Eric Mangini has just announced at this morning's news conference that Law has agreed in principle to rejoin the Jets for the rest of this campaign.
"I've talked to Ty multiple times during the course of the season," Mangini said. "This was really the first opportunity we've had to get something done and we did. He's good physically in terms of his overall appearance, his weight, those things. We feel very comfortable about it."
Mangini said Law will practice with the Jets today and "I think there's definitely a chance" he could play in the Jets' Thursday night battle for first place in the AFC East with the Patriots in Foxboro, Mass. The coach added that he sees Law playing a role in the secondary, both at corner and safety, and adding even more versatility to the deployment of his personnel.
NFL.com and ESPN had initial reports of Law's agreement to a contract on Monday night. But the deal was not finalized and the Jets had no comment on any of the reports until Mangini made it official today.
To make room on the 53-man active roster, the Jets released Justin Miller, their second-round pick in the 2005 draft. Miller had been active for one game this season.
This will be Ty Law day, needless to say. We'll be reporting throughout the day on Law's practice, Brett Favre from his news conference, Darrelle Revis, who grew up in the same hometown of Aliquippa, Pa., as Law.
Mangini just stated that Revis will not be giving up his uniform No. 24 to Law, who after all was Revis' inspiration for wearing the number in the first place. Law, who has worn 24 with the Patriots, Jets and Chiefs, will wear No. 22, his number from his college days at Michigan.
Update: The Jets announced the official signing in a news release at 5:40 p.m. In the release GM Mike Tannenbaum said of the signing and the negotiations with Law's agent: ”It’s good to add a player of Ty’s caliber who’s familiar with our scheme at this point in the season. I appreciate the efforts of Carl Poston in helping to get this deal done.”
For a stroll down Jets/Titans memory lane, here are the top three individual interception seasons in franchise history:
| Year | Player | INTs | Yards | TDs |
| 1964 | S Dainard Paulson | 12 | 157 | 1 |
| 1962 | S Leon Riley | 11 | 122 | 0 |
| 2005 | CB Ty Law | 10 | 195 | 1 |

Tue, November 11, 2008 - 11:11am EDT"I am happy as a fan we have a good vet on the DB squad. I guess I am a bit confused as to why the let go of Justin Miller and not Poteat or Barrett. I wouldn't be surprised if Miller ended up with a dvision rival. I guess the coaching staff knows a bit more on Miller than we do. I like the pick-up of Law. It will be a great learning experience for Lowery."

We needed another shutdown corner and it looks like we finally got him, I only hope this is the final piece we need to improve our passing defense. More importantly Law could be the difference maker we need to beat the Pats on Thursday which make no mistake is their most important game so far this year. Go Jets."

Tue, November 11, 2008 - 11:21am EDT"Getting Law back is all well and good. Big Bill was trying to get him, and its great this is really going to frost him. BUT,NOW WE BETTER WIN THIS GAME THURSDAY. Weve been their whipping boy for too long and if we lose well never hear the end of it. Mangini better have a plan to WIN!, not just a plan to not lose. Even without Brady NE IS NOT the Rams."

Tue, November 11, 2008 - 11:21am EDT"Great move.I love it. Can't see in any possible way how this transaction can hurt us. He's only 34 yrs old he"ll get 15-20 snaps a game, probably more toward the end of the year if he's productive. Best part is he get's to play alongside and give a little boost to not like he needs it though to Darrelle Revis. This is not like signing a washed up Ronnie Lott. Upgraded a weak position. Safety yotoo"
Dan Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 11:22am EDT"Interesting move. I think that Ty has a lot of miles on those tires and what he seems to have lost in speed hopefully will be made up with his football intelligence. The timing is very interesting but we definitely need to have someone who can cover the slot receiver and those triple formations that the Pats play with Welker."

Tue, November 11, 2008 - 12:06pm EDT"Law,s a nice addition and should help out the young guy,s. I thought they should of cut Colman he seems to small and always looks to get beat. Justin Miller is almost as fast as Colman and A lot more physical against the run. Also nice to have around if anthing happens to washington."

A few years ago, he was one of the best return men in the game and making a case for himself as a good corner! Was it his attitude? Dave Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 12:38pm EDT"The Ty Law signing I believe will be huge for the young corners on this team. Law is expected to be used as both a corner and a safety which will make the jets even more dangerous. Should he play this week against New England one would have to believe it only makes things harder for the young Matt Cassell. One thing all great teams have is what this move gives the Jets, Depth."
Mike W Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 12:38pm EDT"The Jet's were in good position to beat the Patriots before the addition of Law. He may not have his speed, but he still has his wit and knowledge. He said he still has his bags of tricks. Patriots better start worrying."

I know he has been injured and only active for 1 game after missing last year, but look how well Vilma is doing after his season ending surgery! Glad to see Law back in a Green Uni! Tue, November 11, 2008 - 12:50pm EDT"Honestly, I would've preferred to see D. Coleman cut over J. Miller. That was a very bad move by the Jets, and now that he's going to the Pats its gonna haunt us in the long run. He's such a young kid with raw talent, such a shame we couldn't hold on to him! Bad Move to release him IMO!"
Ray Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 1:02pm EDT"Charlie I think you answered your own question. Yes, it looks like he thinks we have a chance of going further than the Pats. And he is familiar with both defenses so he waited til now to commit. Let's see how long before J Miller is on either the Pats or the Phins."
Vince Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 1:10pm EDT"The Jets really needed this acquesition. Law brings tremendous leadership to the Jets secondary and will be a great mentor to Revis, Barrett, Lowery espically and the other DBs for the Jets. This was a good pickup indeed but I really wanted to see Miller stay he was fantastic Randy. Do you know if any teams would consider him since being released?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Vince, Justin Miller has to pass through waivers today. We'll find out soon if someone was awarded him on waivers or if he cleared, and then if he signs with another team, or even re-signs with the Jets."
Brian Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 1:22pm EDT"Great move! This now solidifies our D and as important, sends a message to all players that no-one is safe. The JETS are serious, and will do whatever it takes to win. Miller will be missed. GO JETS! "
Kurt Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 1:23pm EDT"The addition of Law definitely can't hurt us. I'm just concerned with the idea of throwing him right into the fire on Thursday night. He may be a seasoned veteran and have a lot of experience under his belt but to be able to perform at a full speed level right off the bat. We will have to see. The emergence of Washington certainly mad Miller expendable."

Tue, November 11, 2008 - 1:55pm EDT"Jets will have to waive someone to make room for Law. It probably won't be Mike Nugent, but he is the logical candidate. I hate to see Jets giving a good player away who could hurt them later. Nugent, being hurt probably won't be picked up by anyone, and Jets can re-sign him later if Feely struggles on short FG's."

Tue, November 11, 2008 - 7:14pm EDT"I like the pickup, I woulda released Nugent though. I cannot wait until Thursday night. Like it or not, this is a must win game. We cannot allow NE to get a 1 game lead, having beaten us twice, and Tennessee next. The season will not be over, but we'll only be playing for a wildcard if we lose this game. The only way we lose is Farve throwing INT's, but we cannot be too conservative either. "

Tue, November 11, 2008 - 7:26pm EDT"This move makes no sense. I thought the secondary with the exception of Drew Coleman was getting there. From what i've seen with Justin is he's a hit or miss guy, but he's young and has a chance to develop while Ty we pretty much know. I don't like that we'll be putting Mr. Penalty Flag magnet back into our team. Looks like the braintrust is gearing up for a superbowl or bust deal. "
Drew Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 7:55pm EDT"Spicer... I clearly stated that Law wanted a big contract to sign and I thought we should see who we have to play CB (with Miller coming back and drafting Lowery who I loved) The terms have totally changed in week 10. While Law still CANT cover a legit WR (like I stated in Aug) He can cover the TE/RB on 3rd down. Its a good deal now wasnt then. Plus I admitted I was wrong about Elam. Didnt I ??"
Rod Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 8:02pm EDT"i really belive miller could be as good as d hester. not really sure what happened to him becuase he hasnt shown up since he went to the pro bowl. letting him go was the right thing for this team, but i hope mangini makes sure he does NOT end up anywhere in the afc east."
Drew Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 8:11pm EDT"Plus, Spicer How could I be wrong about Law if nobody signed him for 10 weeks? Come on bud. It's a good deal now he came cheap and can help " a little" down the stretch.... Ira I agree we shouldnt give up on Nugemt but he hasnt kicked in 7 weeks and Feely has done a pretty good job so far. Feely is less consistent but has a bigger leg and is in a rhythm right now. I would keep Nug on the sidelines"

Maaan i hope not"
Drew Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 8:20pm EDT"It's amazing how much Ex fan posts he still is clueless to actual football knowledge. To say Miller will come back to haunt us with INTS is hilarious since he has ZERO in his career. We gave up on Ty Law as his cover skills were negated by the 5 yrd rule and he struggled to adjust not at his best. His 10 INTs hid spotty play Today you expect a Jet win yesterday you explained how they will lose??"
Drew Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 8:28pm EDT"Row...Lowery was benched after trying to play with a broken jaw. He struggled because he was hurt. He also ran a 4.48 at his pro day to off-set his bad time at the combine. Plus speed is way overrated. I bet Drew Coleman can beat then both in a race. How are his cover skills? Miller has been activated for 1 game this year. His skill never translated to the field. Classic Underacheiver"
Elaine Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 8:33pm EDT"This is a great day for Jets fans and for those of us from Ty and Darrelle's alma mater, Aliquippa, PA High School , which is also the alma mater of Mike Ditka. Go JETS and go QUIPS who are in the finals in PA"
Drew Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 8:55pm EDT"Finally, Law is going have a minor impact on our season. It is a great move by Tangini as it provides leadership/smarts and winning player to a team looking to make noise. It also costs very little unlike when he wanted $$ in the off-season. Law is a notorious route jumper which leads to INTS but also bad TD's. Mangini has to use him correctly for this to really work.. Miller to the Chiefs..Watch!"
Tom Spicer Said:
Tue, November 11, 2008 - 9:00pm EDT"Alot of guys seem to be mad that we let Miller go I do not know why he is not a good corner he can not cover guys he is a good kick return guy & that is it he has had a bunch of chances to be a starter for us & has never got the job done "

Tue, November 11, 2008 - 11:43pm EDT" To all the lowery lovers .. Don't know what jets games your watching but lowery has been torched at least 2 big plays in every game so far especially the last 2 .. Rookie mistakes, Ty law hasn't played for 11 months hes washed up its guys like Drew & company that have no clue.. Waive a big fast young DB for a non winner of peanut butter & jelly DB Yep another g8 move to be proud of"

Wed, November 12, 2008 - 1:32am EDT"true that miller is not a good corner but he's a great returner. to good to have let go. i was really counting on him to get healthy and come back. we dont have enough depth at running backs leon is carrying a huge load especially with chatman out. if anything happens to tj we will be huge trouble. Ray Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 3:35am EDT"as usual mike gloom & doom, you try to make the irrelevant relevant to fit your argument. because there are more blogs that agree with you about miller (and I would have to have a recount to verify, because if you count like you spell you probably got it wrong!) that makes you right? whoa, sorry, almost coughed up a lung on that one! Good post Sal, take note mike ex."
Ray Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 4:02am EDT"mike gloom & doom, what you said was " I will wait & see if they play like this rest of season .. I will be the happiest of jets fans here no doubt.." Now you change it to something else that allows you to be negative. That was a good win in Buff. now you find a way to minimize it. That place has always been a house of horrors for them, no matter Buff.'s record. The TRUTH will set you free!"
yas Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 5:48am EDT"I think Ty Law brings more experience to the jets then Justin did. I've watched Justin over the years & all he was, was a kick returner. He couldnt do nothing at the corner position & at Laws age he would out do Miller.. I cant believe we wasted a second round pick on the guy. I wish him well though. "
Ira Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 7:05am EDT"Drew, Law will do it the right way this time around for the Jets. He will be like a player coach on the field for Eric and will get some veteran experience into the secondary. While he won't play full games i wouldn't be shocked if he is playing more then people think down the home stretch. GO JETS!!!! Remember he gets an INT off of a Bowens tip tomorrow night. Just a hunch!"
uncle joe Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 9:12am EDT"How is Ahmad Carrol still on this team?I guess he is more versitile than Miller. He can play all sides of STs and plus Miller is always hurt, plus Miller does fumble.I'm with Drew on Miller going to KC,but maybe Raiders grab him.Mangini must not be worried about NE picking him up if he let him go right before the game, there were other options."

Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 10:19am EDT"Law will play a much bigger role than some of you think we did not sign him for him not to play a big role. This all depends on what kind of shape he is in & what he has left. If he is in tip top shape I see him starting for us late in the year. If he is in okay shape he will be the nickle back & if he is washed up (which I doubt he had 10 INT'S 2 1/2 years ago) he will be the dime back. "
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 10:25am EDT"On D the Jets need to have Revis cover Moss & Elam double him on the other side the Pats start 3 WR'S Gaffney starts outside & Welker is in the slot put Lowery on Gaffney outside & throw the kitchen sink at Welker with Law, Barrett & Poteat. Law does not have breakaway speed anymore but he gets in a guys face at the line & is physical with them & he is a good tackler in the run game. What the WR "
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 10:33am EDT"Welker killed us last game on that get up in his face. The front 7 will stop the run & we have to be aggresive on passing downs we have to bring the heat to Cassell BLITZ every passing play at least 1 LB has to come. On O the ground will be sloppy from the rain we have to run the ball. Set up Favre 1 play action pass 2 short slants to the WR'S 3 Keller over the middle 4 screens to Leon WE CAN WIN"

LOL Anyway I'm shocked that they released J.Miller and it's true he will go to another team and be a star."
Matt Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 10:58am EDT"Kind of a bewildering signing from many angles to be honest. Jets secondary isn't awful and this seems kind of a desperation signing. Why? If Ty Law was still a superstar, or at least a star, or a very good, or above average, or average CB he wouldn't have been sitting around in street clothes till week 10. He won't sign cheap because he still sees himself as a star. Continued..."

Wed, November 12, 2008 - 11:01am EDT"This is great. Law back in the Green and white. I think they need him have Lowery going against Welker. That would be a great match up. The Jets should know that the Pats will do screens like there is no TOMORROW. Overall this game the Jets need to show their heart and I hope they do I am behind you guys all the way. Give them everything and prove we own the AFC. Lets go Jets"
matt Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 11:05am EDT"...He was a physically gifted player, granted he's probably not washed up, but still. This isn't a bad signing, just an odd one. He certainly doesn't bring any insider Pats info to the table like some signings the week before a game. Summing it up: Poor tackler/run support in his prime, relied his physical skills which are now diminished to cover, Pricy free agent. Good luck, just confused."
BIG AL Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 11:12am EDT"yes the weather calls for light rain low of 35 good football weather and the spicer is correct if we shut down welker that forces casell to throw to moss and with the threat of LAW hanging in the backfield could play into casells thoughts so with that said our D need to put big pressure on them to make cassel make mistakesjets stop the run they need to stop welker and get rough on Moss jets canwin"
BIG AL Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 11:20am EDT"Hey the bottom line here THE JETS ARE THE BETTER TEAM this year they just have the picked on by the school bully mentality when it comes to NE and the chowder heads now it if the JETS come out and slap the snot out of the bullies the mind games are done and they move foward from it they come close to beating them but NE gets in there heads it has to stop and farve canbe the guy with law to stop it"
Ira Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 11:22am EDT"I am sick of that WR screen the Pats run. The Jets must stop that. Would love to see one of the DB's jump the play and take it to the house. But the Pats are smart and i have a feeling they will bait the Jets on that and try to pulloff a WR screen option pass. The Jets for 60 minutes have to be 1 step ahead of the Pats physically and mentally. Everybody enjoy the big win. GO JETS!!!!"

Plus the fact we had to spend 200 mil on players cause your boy can't build with the draft or coach them up.. You can spell it any way you want.. Will be the biggest of under blunders yet & will finally prove my point .. Win no big deal"

Kyle Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 11:46am EDT"Doesn't make sense to release Miller who was a pro bowl return man. Law is old and washed up. Lowery has shown great potential, they better plan on using Law only in an emergency injury need and not taking away Lowery or Elam's playing time. Typically Jets move to get slower on defense. Sometimes I think Sutton's goal is to have the slowest D in the league."
John Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 11:47am EDT"Question for IRA and Randy. Do you think that BLOCKING by Offensive Line and WRs and PLAY ACTION FAKE are the basic keys to the OFFENSE working and beating the PATS offensively speaking?"

"John, I'll let Ira handle that."

Wed, November 12, 2008 - 12:09pm EDT"JETS better WIN this game against the PATS! The JETS couldn't beat the PATS the 1ST time the JETS played them this yr at JETS stadium wiht NO TOM BRADY. So the JETS better WIN this game at the PATS stadium. The PATS have NO TOM BRADY, and a lot of the PATS players are out and INJURED. If the JETS can't WIN this game agianst the PATS, then the JETS will NEVER beat the PATS!"
Drew Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 12:19pm EDT"For all of the Miller lovers. He was injury prone, had off-feild problems, has never recovered from his injury and was a horrible CB that had a total of ZERO INTS in his career. I will say it again D Lowery has made more plays and has been beat less that Miller. I cant argue that there were guys that could have been cut (Coleman,Carroll) but Mangini didnt trust the kid. Good riddance!"

Randy Lange Said:
"Row, Justin Miller made 12 starts at CB for the Jets: eight his rookie season in 2005, four in 2006."
Alan Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 7:05pm EDT"Miller signed with Oak. so there goes the whole idea that the almighty Bellichek is going to jump on Mangini's folly of releasing the 'all of a sudden' hall of fame CB Justin Miller. NE already has average CB's, why sign one that isn't better than what you have and offers nothing for the proverbial 'locker room. No one is wasting a roster spot for a guy that can return kicks and nothing else"
Graham Said:
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 11:36pm EDT"Check out that JETS are recruiting for a person to manage a team to sell PSLs and/or season tickets. Randy, Is there a concern that they will not fill the new stadium?"
Ed in Tucson Said:
Thu, November 13, 2008 - 12:11am EDT"I’ve been bleeding green since they changed the name to rhyme with Mets. I had the pleasure of watching Emerson Boozer complement Matt Snell’s power running with outside speed. Joe Wille had Sauer, Lammons & Maynard to move the D back off the line. That’s winning formula, along with stifling D. The Giants have a similar formula. We lack outside running. BSmith & Leon could fill that need. Go Jets!"
Ed in Tucson Said:
Thu, November 13, 2008 - 12:31am EDT"Cont... With more balanced & imaginative play calling, (balance between inside & outside running also) opponents would have more possibilities to account for, making it easier for receivers to get behind the DBs. Pats’ aging LBs will get worn out if we make ‘em run sideline to sideline for 60 minutes. T Law as hybrid CB/Safety will help Lowery contain NE's receivers. Good Move!"
CEDRIC Said:
Thu, November 13, 2008 - 12:58am EDT"Ira, hate that screen too, thats one of the reason they brought Law is, because he's smart, we dony have the speed to match welker but can be physical & read plays like that to disrupt it. "
Ray Said:
Thu, November 13, 2008 - 5:00am EDT"so let me make sure I understand what you spelled out for me mike gloom & doom. If we win, no credit, but if we lose we are the biggest bunch of "under blunders" (whatever an under blunder is in your language)? So what your saying is you are letting us all know that no matter what they do tonight you'll be your usual inspiring and uplifting self."
Ray Said:
Thu, November 13, 2008 - 5:41am EDT"So mike ex, Lowery has been "torched" 2 times every game. Law who has two SB rings is a non winner compared to Miller. Revis, Lowery, L. Washington, D. Harris, D. Keller, C. Stuckey, B. Smith, N. Mangold ALL apparently stink since our guys don't know how to draft. And Miller is gonna be a pro bowl corner now that he's gone. Just a few of your gems on this Radar alone!"

I like/dont like this cause Lowery has shown tremendous potential and has been getting better everygame. I've always liked Law but it appears he's hear now that there is enough "fat" to go around. I personally thought with Elam at FS and Poteat at nickel, we were starting to get the identity we wanted."
