10/12 — Cincinnati gets the ball to start the second half and open with two third-and-10s. Ryan Fitzpatrick picks up the first with a completion to Chad Johnson (OK, Chad Ocho Cinco, although he continues to wear C.JOHNSON on his jersey) against a Jets three-man rush. But the Jets win the second third-and-10, also with a three-man, when Calvin Pace shakes his man and takes the Bengals backup down for the sack.
The Jets move on two long Brett Favre completions, to Laveranues Coles for 29, then to Jerricho Cotchery for 18 to the C-24. But on second down Favre gives the ball back on an interception, but S Marvin White's pickoff of the long ball intended for TE Bubba Franks starts the visitors out at their 3.
Leon Washington is having a sharp return day and he takes the Bengals' next punt from their end zone from the C-47 to the 25, a 22-yard return. The Jets seem confused by the Tiger Stripes' stout defense today with Favre, on third-and-3 out of an empty set, getting sacked by DE Frostee Rucker. But Jay Feely comes on for his second FG toward the East end zone, a 43-yarder that makes it Jets 20, Bengals 14 with 5:36 left in the third.
The Jets take the next punt and try to move but again are stymied. Favre drops back on third-and-12 from the Cinci 31 and tries to get the ball to Jerricho Cotchery singled up against CB Johnathan Joseph down the right sideline. But Joseph has the position, Cotchery fights for the ball and it's batted in the air — and S Corey Lynch comes away with it.
The bad news is that the Jets are now minus-2 in turnover differential, but at least this is no worse than a great punt as Lynch is taken down at the Bengals 8. Fitzpatrick, plucky as Carson Palmer's fill-in today, converts a third-and-8 on a completion to T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
But then the Jets D, which has played well all day except for the drive at the end of the first half, rises up. A David Harris/Bryan Thomas combo sack followed by a Calvin Pace run-the-QB-out-of-bounds, forces another punt, and Leon gets another PR into CB territory.
Then Thomas Jones gets it cranked up one more time.
Favre moves the Jets 41 yards in 10 plays. He gets five carries for a mere 12 yards, but one converts a third-and-2 and his last, out of that "heavy" package (three TEs and a FB) that produced his TD reception, is a 1-yard TD run to make it 26-14 with 2:22 to go.
It is the first three-TD game of Jones' nine-year career, and his first two-TD rushing game since the '06 playoffs, when he did it twice with the Bears.
The Jets go for two, since the Bengals will need two TDs no matter what and if they get lucky with two in the game's final 2:22, they may only get a tie. But even though the deuce fails, the Bengals will not get their first win of the season. They will fall to 0-6.
And the Jets will rise to 3-2 and get ready to go to Oakland for next weekend's chance to go two over .500 for the first time since late in the '06 season.
We'll have a feature on Thomas Jones by Tim Carlson, my final blog of the day from the Jets locker room, and Eric Allen's game story in the coming hours.

Sun, October 12, 2008 - 4:18pm EDT"Very good job done by the Jets defense! I thought after that QB sneak touchdown they would be giving up more of those kinds of drives, but they did hold up. Jones had a great day as well, congratulations to him. Favre should keep his head up, those interceptions shouldnt discourge him. GO JETS!"
Jeremy Said:
Sun, October 12, 2008 - 4:26pm EDT"Biggest issue aside from Favre making 2 horrible decisions, was once again the play calling on both sides! If the JETS are going anywhere SUTTON needs to GO! You force them 3 and out 4 straight times then relax and looked like they switched to a soft zone and the Bengals march down the field and scored. On Offense Shotty called way too many short WR screens and 2 WR end arounds in the first half?"
Jeremy Said:
Sun, October 12, 2008 - 4:31pm EDT"Shotty was horrible all game long. Cincy gives up 170 rushing yards/game and they don't run the ball with a lead and Favre throwing INT's?? All day was nothing but WR Screens and dink and dunk passing till late in the game--Did Shotty bring back Penny's playbook for this one? It should have been the TJ & Leon show all game long. Glad TJ has more than 1 TD this year! Elam played well, keep him in!"

Sun, October 12, 2008 - 5:07pm EDT"I know it was a W, and I'll take it, but still very concerned with the Brett INTs, and of course the runnung game. Can someone explain why we can not run the ball with any consistincy, 86 yards against a team giving up 176 on average. That will not get the job done."
Andrew in Tucson Said:
Sun, October 12, 2008 - 5:13pm EDT"Beautiful,Awesome,Wonderful!Let me count the ways that this is a good win! Any win is a good but this is exactly what the Jets needed to do.Thomas Jones with 3 TDS thats back to back with one player with 3TDS! Who will it be next week?Go Jets Go all the way to championship day! If there is such a thing as a good pick Favre threw 2 of them,But hey! the Jets wons so who really cares! Good win JETS!"

Sun, October 12, 2008 - 5:57pm EDT"It was ugly but it shows up in the W column. Look at it this way there were alot of upsets today....we werent one of them.....Not sure on the play-calling but we threw the ball all over the field against the Cardnials before the bye so the Bengals must have been taking away the deep routes. Needless to say, I was sitting on pins and needles through that whole game today. Instead of the Bucs having a tough time with a good team, MY JETS nearly give away a lock-WIN!!! SAME OLD JETS!"

Pace and Thomas continue to play well. Elam was good today and should be the starter. He adds speed to the secondary. Only disapointment is that they didn't really run the ball well. It was too inconsistent. Drew, Cinny did take away the deep routes."

Sun, October 12, 2008 - 8:06pm EDT"Just getting back from the game& I have not seen any film. The crowd was electric & loud. Run Defense was great, alot of pressure on Fitzpatrick with only 3 & sometimes 4 guys rushing. Looked like coles dropped 2 easy ones. Gholston was a non factor again. Leon was great on returns, & Lowery looked solid as did Pace & Harris. I'll watch the tivo & see how Zartan could fall asleep."

Not sure what some of you are smoking talking about blowing out Bengals earlier on in the week.LOL We were lucky to get this win. Glad TJ got the ground game going congrats. Favre will have better days. Jenkins is the man we have to keep him healthy. We need a new DC. Glad to see Jets D show some emotion on stoping big plays. Now we need Pats 2 lose."

Give chatman a shot, jones can't pound or breakaway. Farve looked good early, but not his best game. Still though, feel real fortunate to watch B.F. as a jet every week. P.S I like my crow well done please"

Sun, October 12, 2008 - 8:34pm EDT"Once again I was out of town and only got NFL.com updates, but it seemsThe Jets are letting teams hang around...they need to control the line of scrimmage better and get some killer instinct, especially in Mangini's play calling! This reminds me of Brett's GB days where no matter what he got on O the D would give it back up to the other team. Lets get the D into the weight room or something.."

Sun, October 12, 2008 - 8:40pm EDT"Cedric have you been hibernating? What is your point? It was an ugly win the team is still out of sync and hopefully it will improve. I still don't like how disorganized the D looks every time they get in the red zone. Coles dropped a TD and another 3rd down pass...Cotchery continues to be our best WR. Although TJ and the running game is still sluggish the 2 rushing TD's are very good. "

Sun, October 12, 2008 - 10:31pm EDT"Im convinced Frank is Biased... No the Game wasnt pretty... but the reason it wasnt pretty were the 2 interceptions had those catches been made its a totally different looking game. The Int were great plays made by the Cincy D. Our D held them to only 171 total yards. field Position was good, My main problem was that the Run didnt dominate. We should have broken long ones against them."
IAMAYAHOO Said:
Sun, October 12, 2008 - 10:36pm EDT"we are tied for 1st place in sacks with 18.... we are 6th in ppg and we are 3rd in rush defense.... we are playing good football!!!!!"

Sun, October 12, 2008 - 11:00pm EDT"LC also made a couple great catches too. Like Favre your going to have to take the good with the bad. He's still tough as hell and he makes us better. I like that Brett wasn't at his best and we won. Leon's not an every down back, use him too much and he's not as effective. Enough with the WR screens."

Mon, October 13, 2008 - 12:58am EDT"All those TJ haters had to watch him score 3 TD's. Chatman had one yard. I really like the B. Smith reverse, want to see him throw a pass. Seemed like the Pats 3 yard screen was ran a few times. If I had to say something negative, it would be situational play calling. I don't understand running on 2nd and long, or throwing a 4 yard pass for a 12 yard first down. We're winning though!!! YES"
ddh Said:
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 6:06am EDT"Jets D held them to just one offensive score, over all, great effort through out game. the three for one td was rough but what a relief, the Jets appear to have raised the bar on their bottom line, not where it can be but a whole lot better than were it was, glad to see tj in the end zone, maybe next the te's will shine, that will give opponents defensive game planning fits. "
Carol from Wisconsin Said:
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 8:19am EDT"Now, all you folks complaining about the INTs Favre throws, look back at the tape and you will see that some of them are not his fault. Some are tipped into the other team players hands. Granted, he throws his share - more than his share I would say - but at least the Jets won. A win - even an ugly one - is STILL A WIN!!!! And Favre is STILL the best ever so count your team lucky to have him."
BIG AL Said:
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 10:04am EDT"it looked patchy from the start with the o-line collapsing forcing the turnover and an easy 7 for the bengals but the JETS stuck it out and came right back in and took some control what helped was time of poss&turnovers we got lucky palmer healthy and it would have been a different game the o-line needs to step up and make some holes for jones whos avg no real power and have to keep 4 safe"
BIG AL Said:
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 10:13am EDT"this goes back to what i said weeks ago if we are to contend in the AFC race we need to win games against BUFF? NE L SD L TENN? DEN? OAK RAMS SEAHAWKS ETC. SHOULD BE ICING and where is the run game if we dont est.it now while we should be were in trouble no run game forces #4 to throw wild and we all know what comes of that and playoff teams will eat it for lunch need to est the run game and now"

Big O Said:
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 4:02pm EDT"All of the people in here complaining need to just shut up! The Defense did a very good job, of course there is always room for improvement, but for the greater part of the game they were breaking the bengals off! On offense the Bengals prepared for us to go deep and we hit'em with the running game. That is what makes the new Jets so hot. When you are threat in passing it opens up the run!"
Little G Said:
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 7:17pm EDT"I still don't get why the jets wore the throwback jerseys two time in a row!! Why did they do that when they only wore it once last season??and is there any update on Mike Nugent's injury?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Little G, the Jets wore their throwbacks twice last season, at home vs. Philadelphia and on the road at Miami. Coach Mangini said today that he's not sure about Mike Nugent's status and will wait till later this week to evaluate it."
CEDRIC Said:
