09/25 — A question about Leon Washington at today's news conference brought some new anecdotes and observations about No. 29 from head coach Eric Mangini at his morning news conference today.
"I could talk all day about Leon," Mangini said, reflecting again on how far Washington has come from his first days as a fourth-round rookie out of the 2006 draft to now.
"The fact that he was voted special teams captain says a lot — he's the youngest guy to be voted captain this year. On kickoff returns yesterday, every single return he runs back 95 yards, 80 yards, from wherever he caught the kick. And I'm not talking about a slight job at the end — he's haulin'. That's what you want. He runs every return in practice like he runs it in a game.
"He's presented information to the team before," the coach said, referring to the process where a player in a position meeting will be asked to report on a phase of the upcoming opponents' attack. "Mike [Westhoff] will say to a player, 'Present their punt team.' When Leon does it, it's not only the things related to him. He can talk about the flyers, protection, all the blocks.
"You know when he's going home, he's not watching 'American Idol.' He's studying the tape, and that shows up every single day."
Significantly, after Washington was able to cut loose for the first time this season at San Diego, he has moved up the charts to third in the NFL among qualifying kickoff returners with a 33.1-yard average, behind only New England's Ellis Hobbs (36.0) and Dallas rookie Felix Jones (35.1).
Before he got into his Leon riff, Mangini opened his presser by mentioning that he liked the effort and communication during the course of Wednesday's practice and stressed the need to have consistent days and weeks of practice. Which prompted the first question about how the consistency had been the past few weeks.
"There've been some really outstanding days and there've been some days that could've been better," he said. "What my message always is to the team is to have the same level every single day. How you practice, how you prepare — that's what translates into performance on Sunday."
There wasn't much change for QB Brett Favre (ankle) and DT Kris Jenkins (back) from Wednesday to today. The coach said for both, their practice reps (Favre was listed as limited, Jenkins as not participating in some of Wednesday's team drills) and progress should increase through today's and Friday's workouts ahead of Sunday's return to the Meadowlands to tackle the Cardinals.
Regarding the Cards, the Jets will be wearing their Titans navy and gold throwback jerseys for this game. And in keeping with the theme, the players also changed up practice today, shelving their green and white helmets for their navy Titans helmets for the first time this season.
One housekeeping note, which Mangini forgot to mention at the top of his news conference, is that Hank Poteat is back. The much-traveled corner returns to the active roster and is at practice now. To make room, OL Will Montgomery was waived.
It's developed into a busy homestretch toward Arizona. We're planning later this afternoon to post Eric Allen's story on the Jets defense vs. the Cards' dynamic duo of WRs Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald, Tim Carlson's piece on Calvin Pace's long-awaited matchup with the team that took him in the first round of the 2002 draft, and my visit with Poteat.
Injury Update
Here is a report on how Favre looked today, according to Associated Press beat writter Dennis Waszak:
Brett Favre walked with only a slight limp Thursday.
The 38-year-old Jets quarterback twisted his left ankle Monday night in New York's loss at San Diego. Though the ankle was tightly wrapped, Favre appeared to walk comfortably through the locker room before practice.
He took part in warmup jogs and threw with no noticeable discomfort in the half-hour of practice the media are allowed to watch. Favre took one awkward step on a handoff and appeared to grimace, but seemed fine afterward
On today's Jets injury report, Favre remains listed as limited in some portions of 11-on-11 team work. The only change: Jenkins went from not practicing Wednesday to being limited today.
On the Cardinals' I-report, DE Bertrand Berry, their leading pass rusher with three sacks, was moved to out for the Jets game with a groin tear. But DT Darnell Dockett, who also didn't practice Wednesday, was limited at today's practice.

Thu, September 25, 2008 - 1:13pm ET"I agree with you on Leon I don't understand why he does not get more looks! I have one other suggestion which I should have been taken care in the off season! A big, tall, fast receiver that requires a double team situation! I was thinking maybe Roy Williams of Detroit he is unhappy there and could a huge asset with Brett the Jet farve!!"
Drew Said:
Thu, September 25, 2008 - 1:27pm ET"Excellent point Matt......We have this weapon in Leon and we dont use him?? This guy should have 10 -15 touches a game. He is bound to break a few. The problem is we will have to run the ball alot for this to happen Something Jet fans get angry about whne we try. They want to see Favre throw all game. TJ and Leon should see the ball a combined 30 x in this game."
Patrick from PA Said:
Thu, September 25, 2008 - 1:29pm ET"Matt, my thoughts exactly. Also, I'm glad they brought back Poteat. It appears Mangini isn't so sure about Lowery covering Boldin even though he only got burnt once at SD(Gates pushed off for the other). If we don't get pressure on Warner this week it will be a long day. We cant expect our corners to be able to cover Fitzgerald and Boldin all day long with no pressure. "

Thu, September 25, 2008 - 1:41pm ET"I thought SD kicking short was a great testament to Leon's abilities and threat potential, he forced SD to alter their game, and should be a beacon to his follow teamates as to what 100% effort can do. And while I would love to see him more involved in the O, he is still only one of eleven."
Brian Said:
Thu, September 25, 2008 - 1:54pm ET"I agree with matt, he should be able to get the ball a lot more."

Thu, September 25, 2008 - 1:54pm ET"Matt, you are 1000% right! Leon is so athletic & there are so many formations & ways to use him. Anyone remember Bruce Harper.Leon reminds me of him. Brad Smith is another one Mangeni doesn't work into the gameplan enough. We have awesome weapon on offense. With the right gameplan, should be able to average 25-30 pts no problem. Offense is boring & predictable.Cmon Mangini, what are you waiting."
Joe Wille Said:
Thu, September 25, 2008 - 2:05pm ET"Exactly, Matt. Why would you let the guy with explosive acceleration, mindboggling moves and every-carry home run potential touch the ball 20-25 times a game, when you can feed it over and over to Mr 3.6 yards per carry, my guns may be huge but not strong enough to hold onto the ball, down after 1st contact. The answer? Great coaching staff!"

These Einstein's banished Abraham, Vilma and Robertson. Its not just that we don't have them in a kiiler 4-3 now. Its that they allowed an unqualified beginner to flush the immensity of three 1st picks. because he didn't know how to use them. DECLINED: NAMECALLING (EINSTEINS)"
Frankiefromdabx Said:
Thu, September 25, 2008 - 2:47pm ET"Did anyone notice that on the kickoff returns later on in the game, the jets were prepared for the short kicks by having Cotchery (who did a good job on his return), stuckey, smith, keller etc... all short. So go ahead, kick it away from Leon and have a WR return the kick. Better than having the big guys like bowens, gholston, etc.. try to field the short ones. I hope Westhoff does that again"

Thu, September 25, 2008 - 3:16pm ET"More LW & less TJ plus more 2 back formations & leave one in one passing downs. I've been wondering alot about our O line. With all we've added its looked pretty ugly.Maybe it's TJ but they've been week on pass protection too.Maybe we're not that good. If Jenkins isn't healthy, we're in big trouble. When he left the SD game they were able to easily run on us.If we lose this week, its season over."
Damone Said:
Thu, September 25, 2008 - 3:22pm ET"Mangini must not know what a RB option play is.Let Leon go around 3-5 yards in front of the o-line and either stop/turn around or go right or left!! I see Philadelphia run this play 100 times a game. That is a big reason why Mcnabb always has so many passing yards at the end of the game.IT'S CALLED Y.A.C!!We have to run that play,he's perfect for it."

I also like when Brad Smith gives Favre a breather and makes us think he's back at Mizzou setting college records, but I haven't seen that either. I would take Miller over Poteat. What happened to Ray Mickens? "

Thu, September 25, 2008 - 7:39pm ET"I agree with you all. This week, the Jets have to mix up the offense: Pennington style dump-offs for 4-5 yards, Favre-like bombs to Cotchery, screens to Leon, and runs up the middle and outside by Jones. Fitzgerald is gonna jump over Revis every play, so the Jets are gonna have to counter with a high-scoring offensive day. "

Thu, September 25, 2008 - 8:37pm ET"Fact of the week this is the test 4 the jets I guarantee If they don't shine in this game no matter how good the cards are-- like Sd did what they had 2 do MN - jets had enough time. Time 2 take the gloves off make the plays no excuses we lose this game seasons another lose U can take it 2 the bank. then what will --ray --mike mc --drew-- & the crew say ? hope they play poker lol hello guys "

WAIT!!!!!!!!! after leons 13 yrd run to the three yrd line TJ COULDNT GET !!! should of let washington get a shot maybee he would of squeezed through"

Thu, September 25, 2008 - 11:27pm ET"I agree ... get leon the ball how bout a few direct snaps with brad smith in the shotgun .. option maybe stucky in the slot keller & 2 wideouts it will cost the cards a time out "

Thu, September 25, 2008 - 11:45pm ET"Thank You mangini I hope this means drew coleman will be inactive gameday poteat was very serviceable and will do a decent job at nickle. I think revis will take care of Fitz and have Barret and lowery cover boldin together. but what we really need is a passrush a passrush will beat warner barely mobile legs. We need that cloud blitz formation need great blitz schemes sunday"
Ray Said:
Fri, September 26, 2008 - 5:36am ET"First, I agree with getting Leon more involved in the offense, with one exception. Please don't leave him in as the blocking back anymore, that is why we have Richardson. Second, I'll answer you now mike ex jet fan, I said it before, if we go 1-3 I think we are longshots at best to make the playoffs, we would have to go on an unbelievable run after the bye. I don't play poker sorry."
Ray Said:
Fri, September 26, 2008 - 6:16am ET"mike ex jet fan, i want to answer your comment from the other blog, the analogy about raising kids. Now imagine your a Jets fan, and they make all these improvements and everyone is psyched. Then the add a HOF QB and everyones expectation level (NOT MINE btw, I still felt this team had holes and ?'s) was thru the roof. All this talk of team to beat and SB bound, it was unreal the expectations.."

I don't prognosticate and make bold predictions, I watch and then analyze...."

You can't print 5 words in here that I yell at the tv when they're playing like this!! I'm just not ready to say this season is over, if that's drinking Kool Aid, fill me up! But again, before Miami how many of you were spouting Div. Champs, Playoffs and even SB!!! And u say I'M on kool aid!"

Fri, September 26, 2008 - 7:49am ET"Mikethe Ex, your right this is a test, every week is a test . I look for improvement& not repeating previous mistakes.Remember the cardinals are pros too, they have talent so I expect them to make plays also. The season is never lost in my book until my Jets are no longer playing. We'll get a championship one day & I'll celebrate, but for now I just enjoy the games, some more than others of course"
Alex Said:
Fri, September 26, 2008 - 8:02am ET"Somebody please tell them to stop wearing those ugly titans uniforms. they are truly hideous, and worst of all, i just dont feel like i'm watching the jets. i would much rather they wear those late 80s early 90s (i think) all green helmets with the white 'jets' lettering with the plane wing on the s. throwbacks can be ugly, often they are supposed to be, but they have to still look like your team."
Dunnie Said:
Fri, September 26, 2008 - 8:45am ET"Leon is awesome ... that being said we did try him out as a feature back he rookie year ... it did not turn out so well. Leon needs TJ and TJ needs Leon. I say two back set ... split the carries."
NotAlex Said:
Fri, September 26, 2008 - 8:53am ET"Alex, I could not disagree more ... the old Titans unis are way more smashmouth than our current unis. And way more smashmouth than the Joe Willie days. Just because they are not Green and White doesn't mean they don't rock. Look at them again ... the players actually appear bigger wearing them."

Larry Said:
Fri, September 26, 2008 - 10:34am ET"I cant believe anybody is even asking why. You know why. Because we havent had a capable coaching staff in its entirety since Parcells. How many years have we pounded our primary backs into the ground and lost great secondary backs through ridiculous trades or free agency because they didnt play? Mangini and crew are clueless as to how to use their personnel. "

Ray Said:
Fri, September 26, 2008 - 2:41pm ET"Well, mike ex jet fan, apparently my grasp isn't obvious enough. Mudville was the home of Mighty Casey, who everyone had big expectations for......and then he struck out, see the similarity. And since the one post referred to anyone positive as living in "Jetville", I thought Mudville was a fitting name for where all the Prophets of Doom congregate. Sounds more fitting all the time."

Sat, September 27, 2008 - 12:19pm ET"Thx for clearing that up 4 me Ray ...mudville & all... Very interesting observation'.....Finally u understand how us prophets of doom feel . only problem with the observation is There prophets were'nt waiting 40 years . "
Ray Said:
Sat, September 27, 2008 - 9:07pm ET"I'm a Jet fan, I know EXACTLY how everyone in here feels! As for how long everyone in here has been a fan, who cares? Tell that to Cards fan, or Browns fan, or Saints fan or Chiefs fan or Lions fan. There are alot worse things than being a Jet fan, you couldn't pay me to trade with a Lion or Bengal fan. But every year I hope for the best and prepare for the worst. That's life as A Jet fan."
