08/20 — Brett Favre has talked about the importance of having chemistry with teammates. And No. 4 strengthened the bonds with his new Green & White mates by passing two of head coach Eric Mangini's pop quizzes and winning a few prizes for the team.
"Brett's becoming more familiar with things each day and he's building on things," Mangini said at his just-concluded daily news conference. "He got the guys out of curfew last night because he could answer my question on what the team's core values are. I thought I had him. I don't know how he pulled that one out. The room exploded."
Favre also passed a modified Mangini name game, matching names correctly to a bunch of uniform numbers the coach fired at him. In addition to no curfew, he also got an hour trimmed from Tuesday night's meetings.
(If Mangini approached you on the sidewalk or the sideline and asked you to name the Jets' core values, could you? Answer below.)
Mangini also talked at the top of his newser about today's training camp practice, which is the last practice open to the public of camp.
"It's been an exciting training camp. We've had a lot of fans here at different times. The time I've been here, it's always great to have the energy from the fans, especially when practices get a little longer and coffee just isn't getting it done. But having them here, having the kids here, it's great."
As a result, Mangini has scheduled a period at the end of practice for players to sign autographs and interact with the fans who are here for today's workout.
Mangini also discussed his cornerbacks. He perhaps put Darrelle Revis' mind at ease. Revis the day before the start of camp said, "I don't even know if I'm going to start," but the coach today said, "Darrelle's going to start, I can say that definitively."
On the right corner, Mangini didn't declare who's on top of the depth chart but he gave some insight to how things might shake out, similar to how they shook out in 2006 when four different players (all still on the roster) got starts at RCB.
"A lot of the time, that's game-planned," he said. "When it's not clearcut at the other position, then you're definitely going to look at who you're facing, what's going to cause them problems, what's going to cause you problems.
"Every one of your DBs has to play all the different spots. That was the nice thing [at New England] when we had Otis [Smith], Terrell Buckley, Ty [Law]. That was an older group. It didn't matter what spot you put them at — star, outside, money — offensively you couldn't tell whether if we were in man, zone, matching up like with like."

Here are the lists that Mangini has compiled over the years and has impressed on his players in his three seasons as Jets head coach, through meeting reminders (and pop quizzes) and signs on the walls:

The Jets will never regret adding him to their roster. He knows how to handle a team and he knows how to handle the media, both with great respect."

Wed, August 20, 2008 - 6:38pm EDT"Randy, Thats quite the list. Lowery is a keeper and i will not be shocked if he starts opening day. Miller could get the edge but Lowery has really come on where Miller has stayed the same. Once again that 4th rd pick is good luck. Cotchery, Leon, Brad, Kerry and Lowery have all been taken in the 4th rd. Maybe next year they need to get a few more 4th rd picks. GO JETS!!!!"

Wed, August 20, 2008 - 6:49pm EDT"Stephen, Nice story on Henry. He had a very good practice today and catches everything thrown to him. He is not afraid to go over the middle and i keep on saying he reminds me of a young Keyshawn. Amazing Clowney goes down and Henry steps up. Stuckey too had a fine session today. And Smith caught a beauty from Ratliff."
Jimmer Said:
Wed, August 20, 2008 - 6:51pm EDT"Since Mangini is giving a second mulligan to KC, I guess it's all said and done that he's 3rd string. KC never showed as much promise as Ratty, even in preseason. If a draft pick don't pan out by year 3, they're pretty much history. "

He continually gives a huge cushion to WR's and still finds ways to get beat deep. Here's my prediction Miller/Barrett get beat in week 1 taking a chance against Chad and Lowery is opposite Revis for the rest of the year."

Wed, August 20, 2008 - 10:11pm EDT"Hi, Randy: Quite a switch for us Packer fans to Jetland as far as press coverage is concerned. In G.B., local scribes outnumber fans at times because they have almost nothing else to do. I like your writings and look forward each day to your coverage. I like your coach, Eric. "He reminds me of Lombardi in his "dogma" except he has a more ready sense of humor. Go Jets. Have fun, fans."

Pete Said:
Wed, August 20, 2008 - 10:39pm EDT"I get happier each day I realize Favre is really my starting QB. I think his toughness and competitiveness will help on both sides of the ball (is it wrong to ask Brett help us stop the run?) I agree with Drew that Barret has to go. We have too much young talent to start someone with no upside. Let's see what we have. It's much better than rolling the dice at QB!"
Pete Said:
Wed, August 20, 2008 - 10:44pm EDT"Who will be next to Rhodes? I think all that matters is which safety can stop the run the most effectively. I am really, really concerned about this. Although he made some silly mistakes, I loved the way Elam played last year. He looks like he really likes to hit people. The 3-4 slows your instincts but Elam was flying all over the field. He will make mistakes but also big plays. He has a presence"
Drew Said:
Wed, August 20, 2008 - 11:24pm EDT"Pete...I am all for big hits but I think I like E Smith over Elam. Would not be suprised if the player next to Rhodes is on another roster right now. They tried to sign Lynch (not really sure why) which smells of a final cutdown signing. I am sure they have their eye on a player."
Alabama Dave Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 2:45am EDT"Big Brett fan here. Was a HUGE Jets fan back in the day, when Joe Willie was slinging the ball. I just wanted to say that I'm excited for the season to start. I believe Brett lucked out when he landed with the Jets. The team and the fans really want him and respect what he has done. They don't take anything for granted. It's a "hungry" group. That's the VERY best place for Brett to be. :) "
Daneen Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 2:48am EDT"Hey Pete be careful of what you wish for Favre's scholarship at So Miss was as a DB - (until they got smart) he might just like to work both sides of the ball. I know he loves to throw some awesome blocks for the RB's - he did quite a few for A Green - Brett & Henderson helped get a lot of yards for him! All that said I rather see him as the QB and leave stopping the rush to others!"

Thu, August 21, 2008 - 5:09am EDT"Note to Eric Mangini. Dont make a legend like BF memorize Core value principles. A man who has them does not need to recite them. Concentrate the information transfer on the playbook instead and not memory games. What the heck are you thinking ? Hope to see BF for at least 30 plays this week. the remainder can go to KC and BR. I am all for dropping Ainge if BR has another good performance."

Thu, August 21, 2008 - 9:21am EDT"I'm a young Packer fan, I grew up with Brett Favre... I hardly remember Majkowski. But what amazes me here is there are so many "fans" who have jumped ship to root for the Jets and leave the Packers behind. Don't get me wrong, I'm rooting for the Jets as well this year because I think Favre is great, and I would love nothing more than a ring on his finger at the end of the year."
Kevin Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 9:49am EDT"This has to be the worst site, I cant believe the nfl lets this go. Mangini does need to stop making Brett memorize stupid stuff, the playbook is more important. If Brett continues to like he did against the skins, the Jets will win more games than the Pack, get a wild card birth and a playoff win, maybe 2 depending on who it is."

Thu, August 21, 2008 - 1:38pm EDT"Hey Kevin, Mangini is the BOSS, not Favre, if Mangini wants him to memorize war and peace so be it, quit crying over what a player responsibilities are & worry about production on the field, are you Brett's mommy?"
Teresa in Wisconsin Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 2:16pm EDT"I agree, don't make Brett memorize stuff--but the fact that he did says alot about his character. That's why so many fans moved on with him. He's like your best bud down the street. The way he loved his mee maw (grandma), the way he played his heart out after his dad's death. Brett and Deanna's charity work in WI. Jet's fans-old and new-you not only got a great QB, you got two"
Brian Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 2:17pm EDT"You know what I'm a packer fan still. Just because management treated him like crap doesn't mean I bail on the whole team. These two teams wont play each other unless its in the Superbowl this year. So I'm rooting for both. It's been cool getting to know some Jets, and the jet fans seem to be embracing him and all the Farve fans that follow. This is going to be a good season!!"
Teresa in Wisconsin Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 2:20pm EDT"got cut off--you got two of the greatest folks you could wish for. So, be good to them. Brett is an exciting QB to watch, enjoy every minute! And to big AL--I'll pitch in with ya! TT is going to go down in football history for this, and not in a good way."
MrMagoo Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 2:23pm EDT"For all those worrying if brett can handle the playbook,...get off it. He's a professional. It isn't like they are new plays,..its just terminology. Brett will be fine. He has showed what he can do already,..50 plays memorized in less than 7 days. By the time it's for real,..he'll have enough down that it wom't be a problem. Even coach mangini said he was impressed as to how fast brett asborbed all"

Chadless and Happy Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 5:00pm EDT"So some of you actually think that it's a good idea to waste Favre's time memorizing Mangini's stupid lists rather than spend that extra time on the playbook? Are you kidding me? How ridiculous to say that it shows Favre's "character". Favre is a known commodity with nothing to prove about character. Besides, Chad had character and all I got for my money was years and years of losing football."
Donnie Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 5:49pm EDT"As a lifelong Pack fan, it will never be the same without number 4, I have embraced the Jets, while I will always be a Packers fan, I have welcomed the Jets into my heart. I'm positive in saying the only curse of he Madden cover this year will be Brett going to a Super Bowl in Jets uniform and not a Packers. GO JETS GO!!!!!"
Teresa in Wisconsin Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 9:04pm EDT"That is the mistake TT and MM made, treating Brett like a commodity! He's an awesome QB and a great person. The Jets will have an exciting season, so GO JETS!!! "
always a fan Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 11:20pm EDT"It's a crazy argument but who said they made him memorize these rules? This report states they are brought up in meeting reminders and posted on the walls. Mangini even said "he thought he had him". It doesn't sound like he ordered anyone to make Brett memorize them. But it does show how Brett obviously respects the team enough to remember them. Do you know your company's core values?"
PJ from WI Said:
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 11:29pm EDT"I wonder if TT has a dog like former Packer coach Dan Devine used to. He might want to keep an eye on it. Only Packers fan will understand this one. Our best chance to go to the Super Bowl was wasted by TT after he ushered Favre out of WI. Ill be watching a lot of AFC games this year. Go Jets!!"
Randy Lange Said:
"Supposedly some fan shot Devine's dog in the early Seventies. But Devine in his autobiography three decades later said a farmer accidentally shot the dog while trying to make it stop causing canine mischief on his property. Which version do you believe, PJ?"

Like "Do your job first and trust the guy next to you". That is awesome. It sounds simple but it is so true, do your job first. You aren't helping anyone if you don't do your job before worrying about someone else doing theirs. They should pound that kind of stuff in ......"

After Joe N hes the best we've had."
