File Under: Eric Mangini, devito, Shaun Ellis, Mike Nugent, Ben Graham, Sal Alosi
08/14 — The Jets celebrated as if Mike Nugent had kicked a game-winning field goal.
And while Nugent didn’t actually win a game, his 48-yard make at the end of today's session meant no meetings and no curfew for the players tonight. They jumped and danced, hooted and hollered, and exited the premises just as quickly as they could.
Head coach Eric Mangini was in a giving mood because he gave the guys a second chance. He presented three challenges: one of the QBs had to hit the upright with a throw from the 25-yard line; P Ben Graham, stationed at the 30, was asked to get his punt to die inside the 10 without assistance, and Nugent was required to nail a 38-yarder.
If there was one success — no meetings. If there were two triumphs — no curfew. But the Jets came up empty and fortunately Mangini gave Nugent an all-or-nothing boot. With these players downright sick of the dorms and praying for a free night, the pressure almost paralleled an overtime kick in the regular season.
Redemption was sweet and few cars remain in the parking lot as I write early this evening.
“Now I can go hang out. I’m probably going to go see my cousins,” said DE Mike DeVito. “They live down the street [Babylon, N.Y.], so I’ll go see my cousin Joey and hang out in the pool. Hopefully it will stay nice out.” (Unfortunately for DeVito, it just rained something crazy out here.)
DeVito, a 6’3”, 298-pounder in his second season from Maine, has quietly lined up with the first team for a number of practices at left defensive end. Veteran Shaun Ellis is on the mend with a hand injury, so DeVito is getting valuable reps next to NT Kris Jenkins.
“If Shaun wasn’t hurt, he’d be playing against the first team and I’d be playing against the second and third team,” DeVito said. “Then when I’d go in during the regular season, I’d be going against the first team and it’s quite a difference sometimes. It’s nice getting those reps now, getting used to it so when they do need me during the regular season, I can come in and be ready and play at the level.”
A high-motor lineman who was signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent, DeVito played in seven games in 2007. He finished with 11 tackles, seeing action down the stretch. Now in his second pro camp, he is participating at both LDE and RDE.
“It’s like batting lefty, kind of — not the same extreme but it’s still different,” he said of lining up on the right side. “The blocks are coming from a different angle, so you have to get used to reacting to them in a different way. It’s coming and I feel like I’m getting better at it.”
For his off-season performance, DeVito was voted "Iron Jet." The players were required to vote for a teammate they would want to lift with and DeVito collected the most tallies.
“I’m very honored to have that. The weightroom is how I get it done out here,” he said. “My strength is my asset. If I wasn’t strong, I wouldn’t be able to play. All my game is through power and strength, so I need to be in the weightroom.”
DeVito’s squat of 700 pounds led all D-linemen, but he also worked different areas during the spring.
“My biggest things were my flexibility and my agility, my side-to-side speed and a lot of the running stuff,” he said. “ Most of it was focused on the running and the agility and helping me become a better pass rusher. That’s one of my weakest things out here and in the weightroom Sal [Alosi] helped me out a lot with my hips, side-to-side movement and change-of-direction stuff.”
Like many other players we’ve heard from this summer, DeVito bought into Alosi’s program. He put in the work and he’s seeing the results.
Alosi, DeVito said, “has the whole program down. He just has every aspect of it figured out from the stretching to the soft tissue to the hardcore weights to the chains and the resistance. He’s a great strength coach and I’m very, very grateful to have him as a coach.”
Practice Notes
Brett Favre didn’t throw a lot today and his longest pass was actually picked off by Kerry Rhodes. “That doesn’t count. It wasn’t a game,” said the playmaking safety. … The catch of the day goes to Dustin Keller. Thee rookie TE made a diving grab near the boundary on a strong across-the-field throw from No. 4.
QB Erik Ainge, who saw his most work of the summer, completed a short ball to WR Paul Raymond (the scout team’s Santana Moss) and the rookie took it the distance. … Darrelle Revis is as physical a corner as you’ll see and he made a great support play after Favre dumped a short toss to Thomas Jones.
Rookie WR Marcus Henry took the field again and made a couple of catches. ... Kris Jenkins ran a lap after jumping too early on a snap to Ainge. It appeared Big Jenks was hungry for a QB dinner.
Kellen Clemens found a tight window to hit David Clowney for a TD, but he also threw a poor one intended for Wallace Wright that was picked by Ahmad Carroll. ... The Jets will hold a closed walkthrough Friday and then will host the Washington Redskins Saturday night at the Meadowlands.

Thu, August 14, 2008 - 9:01pm EDT"Gholston looks lost so far he is a 4-3 end trying to play linebacker this could be a big mistake I was against taking him all along. Now that we have Favre I think our O will be great but our D I am worried about. Can Chris Jenkins be the stud nose that we need that has to be double teamed ? Can Calvin Pace / Bryan Thomas / Vernon Gholston rush the passer ? Our season depends on it "

Thu, August 14, 2008 - 9:41pm EDT"Wow, great practice, definitely know a way to end it? Jets looked stacked on Defense, Special Teams, and Offense, and hopefully can pull through and win the AFC EAST. Honestly, Brett better be teaching Clemens some stuff before he retires. I hope he is. Clowney is great at of VT. I loved watching him play. "

Thu, August 14, 2008 - 10:44pm EDT"Sounds like my boy Mangini has really done a nice job with camp so far. Getting fired up to see this team on Saturday. I would look for a lot more pressure from the front seven vs the Skins...... Tom Spicer?? How many times are you going to remind everyone that you're worried about Gholsten? He doesn't need to play 3-4 OLB right away. He just needs to get to the QB on 3rd down come the September."
Pete Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 11:34pm EDT"I am still giddy about getting Favre, but I can't buy into Mangini's 3-4. It has been absolutely awful during the past few years and we lost talented players due to the system. Most D-lineman in the NFL hate the 3-4 and don't want to play 2 gaps. I said during the off season that Jenkins will not like NT and will complain publicly by week 6 when labled an underachiever due to poor stats."
Pete Said:
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 11:40pm EDT"You all lit me up as a complaining cynic and Tangini basher. (Cedric was particularly passionate) The bottom line is most players don't like the 3-4 and that hurts production. I think Harris is without a doubt the real deal and will flourish in the system. Jenkins stats won't be good and he will get frustrated. Gholston won't start so all he needs to do is rush on 3rd and long. He will!"
Ray Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 4:25am EDT"Spicer, I bet he is lost right now. This is no small project. About the only time this year he will look comfortable is when they have him just line up and tell him to go get the guy with the ball. I wonder about Jenkins too. He is the key."
Ira Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 7:01am EDT"Tom Spicer, Jenkins is the key to the entire defense. He is so huge he takes up so much space this will workout great. I was very surprised how quick on his feet he is watching him at practice. Pace and Thomas will both have big years and you left out Bowens. Even though Bowens has been moved to ILB he will apply pressure on QB's too. He has had the best camp of any LB."
Ira Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 7:02am EDT"I wanted McKelvin myself but Gholston will be fine. Give him time. he will be a situational pass rusher until he learns his new position and this system."

Fri, August 15, 2008 - 7:42am EDT"Eric, Ahmad Carrols name seems to be coming up a lot during camp. He always seems around the ball. Is there a good chance this guy sees the field come regular season? "

Fri, August 15, 2008 - 8:07am EDT"I said it 4 days ago ... we should have signed Lynch ... I knew the Pats would. Concerning the D ... My biggest concern ... and it has been since Tangini took over ... is that they play nice ... they dont bring the wood ... almost ever. The big exception to this is Harriss (and he is a Tangini guy .. go figure). We need to play with attitude. I would rather lose big and play fierce ... "
Dunnie Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 8:10am EDT"... then squeek out a victory once in a while playing it safe. I want to see the animal in Gholston ... let him loose. I want to see Jenkins pancaking guys at the line ... I want to see crushing hits ... not "revis" wrap around hog tie tackles. The two guys we have that have played mean are Harriss and Elam (sometimes Barton) ... come on guys ... Bring It !!!"
Ira Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 8:44am EDT"JetStorm, Thanks but reference your comment about the Jets allowing 3.4 yds per rush vs the Browns i would sign up now for that for the entire 08 season. In 07 only 2 teams allowed less then 3.5 yds per rush. The Ravens at 2.8 and the Vikings at 3.1. That would place the Jets at 3rd in the league in rushing defense. Thats not bad in my books and the coaches too. GO JETS!!!!"
Drew Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 9:45am EDT"Dunnie?? You're worried about another old broken down SS on the Patriots. Lynch has been a liability in the secondary for 2 years now. For every big hit he and Harrison delivery they give up 3x many TDs. Let the Patriots keep signing these old defensive players like Lynch and Seau. We have a QB know that can actually throw it over their ancient heads. "

Fri, August 15, 2008 - 9:51am EDT"I know I'm not a coach or at all educated in football. But I just don't see the benefit of the 3-4. Seems like these days your stongest players are your defensive lineman, is not having 4 of them better?"
Drew Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 9:51am EDT"Ira...Once again I heard you on WFAN this morning w/ R Neer. You are everywhere my man. Sad day for NY sports talk. As much as they both annoyed me I have been listening to those guys since I was kid.....I know you saw McKelvin return that kick last night. That kid has elite speed. I thought of you as soon as he made the kicker miss. Now lets see if he can lock up a receiver."
Frank Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 11:18am EDT"Ira & Spicer take it easy. Harris didn't make an impact until almost the middle of last year. Gohlston is a tough dedicated and determined kid he will be a beast before the end of the season. McKelvin? We have Leon and Justin both of whom made the pro bowl as returners so take it easy. Ira I do agree corner is going to be our achilles heal this year someone has to step up Miller, Lowry or Barrett?"
Ira Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 11:28am EDT"Drew, Francesa is excellent and it will be strange but he will do a good job. I saw McKelvin's return was very impressive."
Ira Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 12:42pm EDT"Frank, The improved front seven will make up for the ? mark at the #2 CB spot. I think Miller will be fine with that new front we have. Look at the Giants from last year.Their secondary wasn't that good but because of the pass rush they played well. Everybody knows pressure the QB and it makes it easier for the DB's.And i am not down on Gholston at all. I know he needs time to learn a new position"
CEDRIC Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 2:17pm EDT"Frank I agree, VG will be good player, but things take time, its not how u start it how u finish, i hope lowery gets more time, his awareness and ball skills are exceptional, experience will only enhance him."

Fri, August 15, 2008 - 2:27pm EDT"Gentlemen,Spanky Mangini, played NT at college. Got about 36 sacks. That's unusual for an NT.Likes the 3-4 and is going to stick to it!The nose guy is key in the NFL,but usually doesn't accumulate many stats. If the RB looks like a fox having trouble finding the "hole"in the chicken wire, then he's doing his job! If the "fox"finds the hole in the middle of the fence all day,the NT has failed"
Wayne Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 2:33pm EDT"For all you guys who hate the 3-4, Mangini is a Parcells guy & the D he built the Giants, Patriots, Jets & Dallas.Need fast, athletic LB's & a huge body in the middle. Carson, Taylor,Banks & Johnson w/ Sally in the middle. This is what Mangini is trying to build. At first I wasn't in favor of it, but who am I to question this. The D looks better on paper as does the O.Takes time & patience. Go Jets!"
Drew Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 2:56pm EDT"Frank...The reason Harris didnt make an impact until mid-season is becasue he didnt get real playing time until Vilma went down. He had a monster game in his first start.....I am on board with Gholsten, he is our S Merriman. I really want to see Lowery tomorrow. He played really well last week. I have had enough of Barrett. There are so many 12 yrd cushions I can see from him."
Frank Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 3:42pm EDT"Ira you made my case for Gohlston and why I wanted him drafted and not McKelvin. The only hole in your theory which I hope is temporary is that all these guys and the coaching staff play up to the hype. This week better be a significant improvement. The key to all of this is the coaching staff it's their system with their players no excuses this year they need to exceed expectations for credibilty"
zartan Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 3:54pm EDT"Guys, the 3-4 is the best stystem to play because it shortens the field.but its only good if you have LBs that can read and react."

Fri, August 15, 2008 - 7:11pm EDT"3-4 is great for zone coverage, but it can be weak against the run if the team doesn't have a big NT & quick linebackers. Fortunately, Gang Green took care of that. I don't think Jenks will worry 'bout his stats too much because he's already got a multi-year contract. All he's gotta do is plug up the holes to stop the run & get 2 or 3 sacks for the season. Definitely an upgrade over Robertson"
Dave Said:
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 9:30pm EDT"Congrats to DeVito for getting into the rotation. Great kid with a great work ethic. And holy crap, 700 lb squat. Go Big Mike!"
Pete Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 12:16am EDT"There have been some fantastic 3-4 defenses in the past, but we have watched them be great once they were established on good teams with veteran coaches. Wether a fan or not, it is an unorthodox style of defense that forces players to relearn habits they have formed since high school. It makes you think more and slows your natural instincts. It also requires unique players considered "tweeners.""
Pete Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 12:20am EDT"Many of these players don't transition well to the more common 4-3 therefore they have less value to other teams. I think our biggest problem has been the overt lack of buy in from the players regarding the system. Vilma, Robertson, Ellis, etc. just didn't like the D. I think Favre will actually help the D by giving this team(coaches) instant credibility and make players excited to be here. "
Pete Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 12:27am EDT"This is basically Mangini's first year with 3-4 personnel so I will reserve judgment until a few weeks into the season. I admit now, if we can't stop the run, I will go crazy! We don't have to be in the top 10, but please just stop the run. Although I agree our 2nd corner is suspect, it may not matter. I'd rather watch Miller get burned every week then give up 175 on the ground!"
Ken Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 1:06am EDT"Mangini and some of you guys think just becuse players look good in PRACTICE, or have a good practice, that it means something. You may look great in practice, but if the players don't execute and play well in the (REAL game), all the PRACTICE in the world means nothing! Mangini. The BEST players in the REAL game should play! RATLIFF, not Clemens!"
Tom Spicer Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 7:03am EDT"Bowens is a good pass rusher & could probably get us 6 sacks but I do not understand the move to the middle. Harris & Barton are solid but on the outside if Thomas plays like last year & Gholston just is not ready yet we could be in trouble if we would have left Bowens outside he could have played the spot & played it well now we will not be able to switch him back there in the middle of the year"
CEDRIC Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 9:43am EDT"Yea with all the talent on this team, i will be looking at the coaching staff, if Bob Sutton can finally get the 3-4 right, they need more intensity. If Shotty can consistently call good play n Mangini show savvy in crunch time. 2nd & 3rd games should show what we can expect defensively."
CEDRIC Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 9:59am EDT"Bowens is not an everydown LB, did u see him in that 1st preseason game, he was making plays, but he was sucking wind heavy, I think his good enough to make play outside or inside, but they may not have the depth that they wanted to at that position, so they moved him."
MikeMc Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 10:58am EDT"Spicer, I think Mangini is trying to solve that up the middle run defense we have struggled with early every season , I think you will still see Bowens rush the passer on occasion, sorry to say I don't think Gholston will be a factor till the 2nd half of the season& I know you wanted Mcfadden bad Tom, & he looked good yesterday."
MikeMc Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 11:14am EDT"I'm hearing alot of Clowney & not much Smith & with Henry returning to practice is Smith on the bubble?"
Drew Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 12:49pm EDT"MikeMc..... The reason you have not heard about Smith is because is has not made any plays. We needed a guy like Smith when Chad ran our offense. He was a nice change of pace, trick play guy. He's an okay ST player, a bad WR and a horrible QB. Why should he make this team? I would take D Ball and or W Wright over him. I also doubt Henry makes this team. He is primed for the PS."
Drew Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 12:57pm EDT"It looks like the GB fans have started to head out of Jet-land this week. I am glad we are back to the regulars. I even started to miss Frank during those first few Favre crazy days. By the way Frank, I have noticed the chihuahua quote a few times. We have to improve that one. It's kind of weak...If Favre throws well tonight we'll have over 400 posts on this site again...Lets stop the run tonight!"
Paul M. Said:
Sat, August 16, 2008 - 10:13pm EDT"It's time to bring in Jay Feidler to beat out Mike Nugent for the kicking job. After he choked on two feild goals during the skins game it isn't fair to the entire Jet team anymore for them to lose those close games because of Nugent. The Dolphfins just released Feidler and he had an All Pro season last year and I'M sure his overall record is far better then Nugents. The Jets don't win enough. "
Drew Said:
Sun, August 17, 2008 - 8:14am EDT"I hope you mean Jay Feely? Even though J Feidler could have kicked better last night."
Robert Said:
Sun, August 17, 2008 - 9:18am EDT"All you need to do is work mike nugent everything you saw in yesterdays game that you did not like make it known to mike nugent and help him perfect his kick and accuracy I feel Mike Nugent will be needed. And plus when preseason games have started it's a time to know your teams weakness and strengths so I believe you should keep nugent and just simply work with him."
