08/05 — How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
Well, maybe it wasn't Elizabeth Barrett Browning, but Jets head coach Eric Mangini was asked at his midday news conference that recently ended what he likes about his team so far in this training camp and he provided a few answers for fans to chew on.
"I like the progress of the line a lot," Mangini said.
"I like the progress of the new players that we've added, both free agents and rookies.
"I think the defensive backs are understanding the different things they have in their toolbox in terms of their coverages getting better and better.
"I like the way the group collectively has been with each other. You see a lot of guys working after practice with other guys."
This last point is something that every NFL head coach runs into at this time of year, and it probably tells him a lot about how selfish or selfless his team will be heading into the new season. Mangini genuinely seems to like his postpractice scene each day.
"This is an inherently competitive time of year," he said. "Everybody's trying to either maintain a job or get a job. It would be very easy to freeze somebody out and not help him. But it's not that type of environment. Each person is trying to improve his skillset and yet has the willingness to help other guys do the same."
Mangini has mentioned this one-for-all-all-for-one mentality at different position groups. He said it has shown through among his tight ends, which just added Chris Baker back into the mix off the PUP list to Bubba Franks, Jason Pociask, rookie Dustin Keller, A.J. Schable and James Dearth.
The question was if Baker's production, which hit career highs in receptions and yardage last season, will decrease with the additions specifically of Franks and Keller.
"I don't anticipate anybody's production or lack of production being a function of just one or two guys coming in," the coach said. "It's going to be the game plan, its going to be the opportunities, all those things. The key isn't to be focused on individual production, it's to be focused on offensive production. Whatever it is, it is. You have to do that element of your job the best you can.
"That group is another one of those groups that's not me-centered, it's team-centered, which is key."
As for the next big team-centered activity — Thursday night's preseason opener at Cleveland — Mangini didn't provide any hints to how long his starters will go and specifically who the starting QB will be, although he said that's not a function of "trying to trick RAC," who as we all know is Romeo A. Crennel, the Browns head coach and Mangini's former New England coaching housemate.
"A lot of factors go into that," he said. "Postpractice I'll watch tape, spend some time with Mike [Tannenbaum] and the staff and make a decision after that."
Asked if the decision will be made today or Wednesday, he said, "Later," although he said he'd probably notify reporters and fans some time before Thursday's 7:30 p.m. EDT kickoff.
Revis Appearance Today on SNY
Corner Darrelle Revis is set to tape a segment of SportsNet New York's "The WheelHouse" after today's single afternoon practice, which has just begun. The Revis segment is scheduled to air on SNY at 5:30 p.m. today.

I feel he is waiting for Weds. to avoid excessive media bombardment of Chad & Kellen. I also feel Kellen isn't showing him enough to warrant the job, so he'll probably get the start Thurs & if he doesn't perform well it could be over for now, until Chad falls, God forbid."

Randy Lange Said:
"mike, I can talk about how individual players are looking but I am not in the business of comparing players or predicting how any one player will fare. I turn your queries over to your fellow Radar readers for reaction. "

Tue, August 5, 2008 - 2:25pm EDT"Gholston missed alot of the camps, because of the rules on Graduation, so hes being fed too alot of information which he has to process, and i think hes been doing good so far, by the tame the end of the preseason starts , his motor will be running, and wont be hitting the breaks until The RB or QB is on the ground"

Kyle Said:
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 2:38pm EDT"Take it easy robert. Gholston is transitioning from a defensive end in college to an outside linebacker in the NFL. He is swimming in the sense that he is playing and entirely new position in a new system on a different level. There are bound to be some growing pains. Just be glad we have BT there to start the season so we dont have to throw VG in to the fray right away. "
scjoe Said:
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 2:41pm EDT"I don't believe there is a need to worry about Gholston, his athletic ability will get him by until he grasps the entire system, remember, he missed all of the OTAs, so he is a little behind all of the other rookies. By midseason I can see him being a terror on D."
Ira Said:
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 2:44pm EDT"Randy, One thing i think Eric left out was i have been so impressed with how the LB's have come together so far. And as we all know that is the strength of a 3-4 defense. This D will be in the top 10 in the league this year. And the overall team unity and work is good. This team has the potential to make it a special year. GO JETS!!!!"
Drew Said:
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 3:37pm EDT"WOW...Some of you guys are nuts with the Gholsten concerns. They kid has been in camp for a week. We are already wooried about him? At the very least he will line up and pin his ears back on 3rd down and kill opposing QB's. Plus we have Pace and a "inspired" B Thomas to handle to heavy work until he get rolling......I will re-ask Matthews question...What up with Harris. Is he still riding a bike?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Yes, Drew, David Harris was still sidelined for today's practice."
Daniel Said:
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 3:42pm EDT"I had high hopes for Juhuu Caulcrick but have heard little about him during camp. How is he getting on?"

Tue, August 5, 2008 - 4:19pm EDT"So far, so good, but it's training camp, and no doubt if you've ever played the game, you know not to judge anything too deep based on training camp. But you can see the players look more focused and into the plays. I don't like this Chad/Kellen thing, but that's football for ya. I don't see a Super Bowl win out of this season, but I do see us deep into the competition well into December."

Randy Lange Said:
"That's a trick question, jporter. I'll let Coach Mangini announce it sometime in the next 48 hours or so."
Ira Said:
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 4:24pm EDT"Drew, You're right on about people concerned about Gholston. The kid is making a big adjustment from 4-3 end to 3-4 OLB. He will be used in passing situations early and then worked in like they did with Harris last year. Thing is Pace and Thomas are playing well. Especially Thomas who seems to have found his 06 form again."
mike Said:
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 5:17pm EDT"randy, what do you think of the future of jet's qb situation during next year's training camp? starting qb could be past chad's time and kellen is the farthest trait from who you want to start and lead a franchise. randy, does eric mangini give eric ainge the chance to be the qb next year? will the jet's pursue favre anymore?"
ablity Said:
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 5:39pm EDT"nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo they better have ghoston in every singa snap thats how he'll learn they didn't put harris on the bench on propose, they didn't no wat they had, vern only can learn by playing and going from a 4-3 to a 3-4 is not that big of a ajectment for a 4.6 DE, he is bascailly play DE just standing up. and he play standing in collage. no biggie. they better not have him in only on passing down"

Wed, August 6, 2008 - 9:21am EDT" The last thing Mean Green needs is Favre and more quarterback controversay. Klemens is the future, period. Penntington started 9 games last year and won one, Klemens started 7 and one three, case closed. I was at Hofstra watching several practices, Klemens has a much better arm than Pennington and is a better runner also, Pennington is ahead on game smarts and that will come to Klemens in time."

Wed, August 6, 2008 - 10:17am EDT"it is good to hear that chris baker is returning to the jets. i feel that he is very underrated as a TE and can make any catch thrown at him. he is a very solid blocker and can really be a force in the redzone. bubba franks should bring the same kind of red zone target. Randy, will Dustin Keller fit into the tight end scheme, or will he support the reciever staff in a slot role? undersized?"
Randy Lange Said:
"mike, Dustin Keller is considered a TE and is learning the TE position. But as we are seeing, he creates matchup problems for defenses."

What he did to NFL ICON and his family is reprehensible. GOOD LUCK BRETT from a hourly growing legions of former Packer fans who are now JET fans."
