08/04 — One more word on the Green & White Practice, and only because as I said Saturday, the defense really wasn't heard from much with the postpractice emphasis on QBs and Dustin Keller.
But the D deserved some kudos and we're giving to them today. Stephen Haynes has written today about LB Eric Barton, who talked up the defense, and I checked in with S Kerry Rhodes and LB Calvin Pace after this morning's practice.
The one number on both Rhodes' and Paces' minds was "3," as in the most important number on the down marker.
"It was all right," Pace said of the first- and second-team defenses' performance at the practice. "When it came down to it, it ended up kind of being a 7-on-7 practice. They weren't really calling a lot of running plays.
"It was good. We got some third-down working. They had a few big plays that we ideally wouldn't like to give up. But I think if you look at it as a whole, it was a good day's work. The third-down percentage was pretty good."
How good was it? Rhodes had an idea.
"I'm not sure if the numbers are correct, but I'm thinking the offense was 1-for-18 on third downs or something crazy like that," he said. "We still had some errors, of course, that we need to work on.
"But as a unit, we did good in trying to emphasize third downs. We had trouble with that last year. This year we wanted to work on it. So we came out and the offenses went 1-for-18, which is pretty damn good."
It would be folly to think the Jets offense will be that unproductive, or the defense that productive, in crunch-down conversions this regular season. But both offense and defense struggled in that department last season and the D looks to be on the road to recovery.
The preseason opener Thursday night with the Cleveland Browns of Derek Anderson, Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow, Jamal Lewis, et al., will offer a little more evidence of the turnaround.
"It's exciting having to go against another opponent, and a good opponent such as Cleveland," Pace said. "They were good last year, some strides were made and the should've gotten better. We know it's going to be vanilla, they're not coming out with their best stuff.
"But it's going to be a good test for us."
Here are side-by-side charts of the Jets' lowest third-down conversion rates on offense (left side) and highest rates on defense (right side) since 1990:
| Season | Conv | Atts | Pct | Season | Conv | Atts | Pct |
| 1995 | 64 | 223 | 28.7 | 2001 | 101 | 227 | 44.5 |
| 1992 | 65 | 207 | 31.4 | 1990 | 88 | 199 | 44.2 |
| 1999 | 78 | 226 | 34.5 | 2002 | 93 | 211 | 44.1 |
| 1994 | 76 | 219 | 34.7 | 2007 | 89 | 211 | 42.2 |
| 2005 | 72 | 204 | 35.3 | 2005 | 88 | 212 | 41.5 |
| 2007 | 85 | 226 | 37.6 | 1999 | 90 | 221 | 40.7 |

If Chad cant get his 1 skill of play action going like he couldnt with last years weak line then Clemmons should def get the start."

Mon, August 4, 2008 - 8:46pm EDT"The potential for depth is better on defense than at any point in the last ten years. Defense, even more than offense, is about confidence in teammates and the momentum that confidence can generate. Think about Chad starting for Minnesota with their defense and ground game. Sounds like a playoff team. So why not in New York?"
CEDRIC Said:
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 9:50pm EDT"Oklahoma, u have a point, momentum can make an average offense look above average. The Difference between our QBs & the 05 Bears QBs was that we have QBs who are smart. Say what u want about CP but he is one of the smartest QBs to play this game. KC is gonna have more to prove than just ability, the mental game is why Chad has lasted so long. Accuracy & Win pct, cant beat that."

Tue, August 5, 2008 - 11:14am EDT"randy, do you visualize the jets throwing more on first down this year, considering their inconsistent 3rd down numbers. would chad be the better fit at qb this year because of his mental cridentials and experience along with the vast improvement of the o line. kellen appears to overthrow 3rd down balls, which shows me inexperience and inability to mange a game. who is the better fit at qb?"
Randy Lange Said:
"mike, even if I knew the answers to those questions, I couldn't tell you. But it seems as if you have a pretty good idea how those questions should be answered."

I trust Mangini's judgement in his choice for QB, we don't need to poll the fans or uncle joe. I love this yrs "D" , 3RD DOWN is the most important on both sides of the ball and we need that killer attitude, that team pride to dominate 3RD DOWN !!!"

Wed, August 6, 2008 - 2:46pm EDT" hey, randy,i think the D should look to solidify the 3rd down deficencies. calvin pace, jenkins, { harris}, rhodes, revis, should bond well. however, on the offensive side of the ball, clemens would fit in 3rd and long but his desicion making and maturity as a qb is in question. chad would be prototype as 3rd and 5-3. However, when it get to 3rd and long ex. [15]. do they run.hope not, pennington!"

And it sure has some real good talent. The secondary has 2 potential pro bowl players with Kerry and Revis and the front 7 is so much improved. Jenkins is the key. Bowens has looked great in his new role of ILB."
