08/04 — Saturday's Green & White Practice lived on today, at least as far as some points Eric Mangini made to his players this morning before their return to two-a-day sessions.
"I explained a little more to the team about why we do it," the Jets head coach said at the top of his daily news conference. "We do it to give the new guys a sense of our gameday operation — warmup, pregame locker room, halftime locker room. It knocks the rust off the coaches, and it extends throughout the organization, so that the trainers get to work on the things they do, public relations, marketing. It's so that as an organization we're moving forward before we get to the games."
Mangini also said today was a continuation of the game-week concept in that he and his staff put together their weekly AAR, or After Action Report, a military flourish in which the staff provides immediate feedback on what happened, things that the players did well or poorly during the game. Then the HC prepares remarks and video to stress the points with the players.
"We come in after a loss and everybody's stinging, everybody feels the pain of that loss, so coaching points can sting a little deeper," he said. "We come in after a win, it's all party hats and noisemakers and coaching points can kind of get glossed over.
"What we have to do is come in on a Monday and have honest time, look at things that need to be corrected, fixes that have to be made, in order to improve. Whatever the pain of a loss or the excitement of a win, all that's great, I understand both sides, but we have to learn from that and grow."
Both sides of the ball had coaching points. The offense struggled on third downs (more of that in my afternoon feature on how the defense is feeling coming out of the practice) and with penalties and late drops, while the defense also committed some penalties and gave up some big plays to the O.
That of course leads to the topic of quarterbacks, and Mangini was asked a two-part question: (a) Has he decided whether Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens will start behind center in Thursday night's preseason opener at Cleveland, and (b) Will there be any significance to who that starter is?
"No and no," Mangini replied. "I'll look at it, marinate in it and make a decision. It won't be any sort of earth-shattering news."
After a pause, Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger shot back: "We'll be the judge of that, Eric."
"Yes, you will," Mangini said with a smile.
One more snippet from the coach on top draft pick Vernon Gholston's progress.
"If someone's working as hard as he possibly can but the information's coming a little slower, that's something you can understand. You respect the process there," he said. "It's more frustrating and difficult when you think someone isn't working at it. That's a real problem. Then we meet and get it fixed."
Gholston's situation, he said, is the former.
"I think Vernon's being hit with a ton of information, and he can't draw on anything from OTAs or the early part of training camp — it's all new. The neurons haven't snapped together yet."
The Jets have snapped to attention beginning today, though, because in three days they play the first opponents who aren't wearing green and white uniforms in the first action where the tackling is live.
Randy Lange Said:
"Michael, C.J. Mosley is in the middle of things on the defensive line. He had one of the number of sacks in the Green & White Practice on Saturday, and Eric Allen mentions him low in today's morning practice blog."

Mon, August 4, 2008 - 1:07pm EDT"The fact that the two teams combined for just 17 points in the scrimmage to me shows that the defense is already gelling together with newcomers Jenkins, Pace & Gholston. This defense is going to win a lot of games for us this season no matter who the Quarterback is. Randy, who do you think will get the start against Cleveland?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Joe, I don't know who will start at QB vs. Cleveland and Coach Mangini didn't announce his rotation today. To be fair to the offense, I want to remind everybody that Saturday's Green & White Practice lasted only 34:36 of clock time, so while 17 points is not an offensive explosion, it's better than, say, the 10-7 Jets-Browns game in 2004."

Mon, August 4, 2008 - 1:34pm EDT"Randy, Is it finally over with the Favre saga? When will the Jets formally anounce they will NOT pursue Favre? How do the Jets mend fences with Pennington and Clemens? This whole thing has been ridiculus and I believe Pennington deserves more credit than he is getting. A few years ago he was a savior and now everybody says he's done.. Let him play now that he is healthy..Big year from him!!"

Mon, August 4, 2008 - 1:43pm EDT"Well Kellen had his best practice of the camp so far except for the last play of the am when Drew Coleman picked off a pass. I think Eric will start Kellen Thursday to see how he does first. They know what Chad can do and there are still some questions that need to be answered by Kellen. Keller, Stuckey and Clowney again all made big catches. Pace is so fast off the snap."
CCY Said:
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 2:23pm EDT"Randy, is there ANY live tackling (1-on-1, 1-on-2, or full contact scrimmage) in camp? "
Randy Lange Said:
"CCY, the only live tackling that I've seen so far in camp was during last Tuesday's goal line drills."
Drew Said:
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 4:11pm EDT"KC has got to cut down on these throws into traffic. Every practice he tries to throw one into coverage and it goes the other way.......Chris??? The big year from Chad days are long gone my friend. Chad might win this job but in my mind it's a loss for the organization. I respect #10 for all of big moments but he hasnt been the savior in 6 years!!"
Larry Said:
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 4:20pm EDT"Chris. Chad was never unhealthy he was injured. You dont become 100% after several surgeries to your shoulder like shaking off a cold. As far as being a savior the only thing he saved us from is Vinny, and watching him play hes becoming more like Vin every year. Who by the way was also a great guy. "

Tue, August 5, 2008 - 10:42am EDT"all in all a positive scrimmage for the new york jets. quaterback's played rather solid and the imporoved and solidified defense sparkled during saturday's afternoon scrimmage. chad proved hie can manage a game greatly, and showed no reason for eric mangini to not give him the starting role. kellen still has yet to prove himself that he can lead green and white. cleveland should have high stakes ."
Row Said:
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 4:01pm EDT"This documentary of throws in camp, practices, and scrimmages has got to go. EVERY QB has to throw into traffic. I want both QB's to feel confident they can make the throw. I want our QB's to get picked, but in camp. This non-contact stuff doesn't show anything, it helps QB's, WR's read coverage, helps D's assign coverage and do it at the speed of the game. That's it. Go Jets"
