07/31 — Don't confuse effort with results. That was head coach Eric Mangini's message to his players after this morning's 10th practice of Capital One Bank Jets Training Camp. And he repeated the message to reporters at his daily midday news conference.

"There was effort this morning. There weren't any results," Mangini said. "It's practicing with a purpose."

He stressed that he's not talking about mechanical errors.

"Where I get frustrated," he said, "is when it's more trying to get through practice than practicing with a purpose. That's not acceptable. We're going to be hot in Miami — it's hot now. We're going to be tired that game — we're tired now. It gets to the point where you're trying to get through a rep or get through a period. ... We're not wasting any practices, any periods."

Mangini took his team through a 2-hour, 9-minute practice, the longest of this year's camp but still shorter than the average camp practice of his first two summers as Jets coach. It was probably the hottest practice so far, with an 86-degree heat index.

The coach said this was the first practice of this camp that he felt the results weren't there, although there had been "pockets" of slow times at other practices. He paired this morning's workout with the Sunday practice when heavy rain and lightning forced him to move practice into the Jets' practice bubble. That day he said the offense started out rapidly under the roof but that the defense rose up later in the session during goal line drills.

"My point to them was that's the way momentum is going to shift during the course of games. You can respond, "Let's go," clapping your hands," he said. "But all that stuff doesn't do anything. Someone has to take steps to change momentum, to say, "Take a breath," then move forward. The cheerleading stuff, that doesn't affect anything. You have to tangibly change the momentum. It's not something that disappears when the momentum fairy comes down."

Always the teacher, Mangini said the Sunday practice "was a good lesson from that day and this is a good lesson from this day."

The Jets will get to show what effect their coach's observations have on them when they come back out again late this afternoon at 5:45 p.m., then Friday afternoon for a practice closed to the public. And Saturday they'll get to perform with a little extra edge at the annual no-tackling but high-intensity Green & White Practice at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m. and admission is free.

In Front of the SNY Cameras

Rookie LB Vernon Gholston will be the featured player on SportsNet New York's upcoming Jets Nation. First airing is Saturday at 11 a.m. And my good friend Steve Serby of the New York Post will have a sitdown interview with QB Kellen Clemens as part of SNY's Sunday SportsNite shows.

"Dunnie . I agree with you. This gets learned by playing actual games. I guess youll say Chad was right on by "deciding" to turn the ball over how many times last year? KC was learning after being thrown to the wolves, whats CP' s excuse for his "decisions"? "

"Ray, of course Vernon lined up down which would make him a DE, but he was way outside. I had time to look at some tape, unblocked for a sack vs Penn State and Wisconsin (also a fumble return). I remember seeing more. I just wanna see the guy play. I like having him on our team. "

"I went to Ohio State, and all I can say is, Vernon is a stud. Remember, he has to learn the defense. It took him some time at OSU to get his wheels. Once he does, he is a terror. "
