07/31 — Don't confuse effort with results. That was head coach Eric Mangini's message to his players after this morning's 10th practice of Capital One Bank Jets Training Camp. And he repeated the message to reporters at his daily midday news conference.
"There was effort this morning. There weren't any results," Mangini said. "It's practicing with a purpose."
He stressed that he's not talking about mechanical errors.
"Where I get frustrated," he said, "is when it's more trying to get through practice than practicing with a purpose. That's not acceptable. We're going to be hot in Miami — it's hot now. We're going to be tired that game — we're tired now. It gets to the point where you're trying to get through a rep or get through a period. ... We're not wasting any practices, any periods."
Mangini took his team through a 2-hour, 9-minute practice, the longest of this year's camp but still shorter than the average camp practice of his first two summers as Jets coach. It was probably the hottest practice so far, with an 86-degree heat index.
The coach said this was the first practice of this camp that he felt the results weren't there, although there had been "pockets" of slow times at other practices. He paired this morning's workout with the Sunday practice when heavy rain and lightning forced him to move practice into the Jets' practice bubble. That day he said the offense started out rapidly under the roof but that the defense rose up later in the session during goal line drills.
"My point to them was that's the way momentum is going to shift during the course of games. You can respond, "Let's go," clapping your hands," he said. "But all that stuff doesn't do anything. Someone has to take steps to change momentum, to say, "Take a breath," then move forward. The cheerleading stuff, that doesn't affect anything. You have to tangibly change the momentum. It's not something that disappears when the momentum fairy comes down."
Always the teacher, Mangini said the Sunday practice "was a good lesson from that day and this is a good lesson from this day."
The Jets will get to show what effect their coach's observations have on them when they come back out again late this afternoon at 5:45 p.m., then Friday afternoon for a practice closed to the public. And Saturday they'll get to perform with a little extra edge at the annual no-tackling but high-intensity Green & White Practice at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m. and admission is free.
In Front of the SNY Cameras
Rookie LB Vernon Gholston will be the featured player on SportsNet New York's upcoming Jets Nation. First airing is Saturday at 11 a.m. And my good friend Steve Serby of the New York Post will have a sitdown interview with QB Kellen Clemens as part of SNY's Sunday SportsNite shows.

Thu, July 31, 2008 - 3:45pm EDT"It's about time we saw and heard from the old Mangini. He gives the players a day off and then some shorter practices and then they begin to slack a little?? Sounds like we should see a couple of 2 1/2 hours practices coming up......Just a question on Gholsten. Is he fluid? Is he moving well or is he still a athlete playing football? I know he can get to the QB but can he play OLB?? Ira??"
Steve Said:
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 4:20pm EDT"To Everyone Who Keeps Saying This and That.....lets wait to see how camp results into wins. The team has a tough season a head of them with a number of games on the West Coast. Start beleiving in the team verse being so negative....you're all starting to sound like Patriot fans!"

Thu, July 31, 2008 - 4:22pm EDT"TYREEK. What color is the sky in your world? IT'S PRACTICE FOR GODS SAKE!!!! The whole QB comp is a sham. The only thing CP has over KC is experience and composure. That comes with time. It's all about what direction they want for the future. This we'll know at the last minute from Mantightlip."
Ira Said:
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 4:44pm EDT"Drew, Its way too early to tell. He is switching from DE to OLB which is not easy. So far i think he is trying to pick up as much as he can. I see him being a pure pass rusher this year like J. Abraham was in his 1st year. He needs time to make the adjustment. He is very fast but when he drops back into coverage he is not that fluid right now. Have to give him time to learn the position."
Ken Said:
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 4:49pm EDT"Good for Mangini! Keep it REAL with the players! Don't sugar coat the messages. If the players aren't performing well, tell them that. Don't sugar coat the message. These aren't kids, they are grown men being paid a lot of money to GET the JOB DONE! Like Mangini said, all the hand clapping and cheerleading stuff is nice, but you still have to out there and EXECUTE the play and do your job!"

Thu, July 31, 2008 - 5:20pm EDT"I sure hope VG is more than a John Abraham clone. I mean ... the "sixth" pick for gods sake. If the Pats make us look like chumps because Mayo is a stud ... i'll be bummed. Larry ... send me whatever it is your smokin'. Its all about decision making and performance. period. KC better pick it up .. or be demoted."
Row Said:
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 5:45pm EDT"With Vernon, we went with a player, not a need. They really bought the media's hype. Ronnie Brown is really looking forward to running at a 3-4 that's been suspect to the run. Cleveland has a great O, we will see if Barrett can still start, and who can bring a big ball carrier down. I'm ready to see the Faneca and Woody combo pancake guys as TJ runs for a TD 30 yards out. GET FIRED UP!!!"
DV Said:
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 5:58pm EDT"Mayo not the one that's going to make us look bad. I was trying to get anyone to listen about Shawn Crable before the draft. That guy could end up having a better career than Gholston. "
Bucks County Jeff Said:
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 6:01pm EDT"Abraham was a first round draft pick and the highest rated speed rusher in the 2000 draft. His rookie year he had 4.5 sacks in 6 games and to this day has one of the highest sack per game ratio in the history of the NFL. His problem was always staying healthy (and maybe heart). I would thank God of Gholston turned into a healty version of Abraham."
Ira Said:
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 6:44pm EDT"Everybody just relax with Gholston. Its only been a week. He miised all of the mini-camps because of the NCAA rules. He has a lot of catching up to do. If he gets 8 sacks and many QB pressures this year that would be great."
Damone Said:
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 6:58pm EDT"WHAT!!Row i have to disagree on this one.Are you saying Gholston is overated??When you draft you dont draft for need until later, you have to take the best player available.Regardless, you know we are going to go crazy this year. "
Mark T Said:
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 7:01pm EDT"Randy, Who all has seen some time at ILB? Has B.T. done anything inside? I saw the article about Bowens but have any other OLBs done that at all? Also, what are the chances of Brett Ratliff getting a fair shot at a roster spot? It sounds like he may be having the best camp of all the QBs. Thanks for the info, it is awesome that you respond to reader comments. Way to go! -Mark"
Randy Lange Said:
"Mark T, Eric Allen's piece on David Bowens mentions the main guys on the inside. Bryan Thomas has been working at OLB. But as Bowens said, all the LBs need to be familiar with all the positions. Brett Ratliff will get a fair shot at a roster spot, but as you know there are many considerations when the final cutdown approaches."
CEDRIC Said:
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 8:25pm EDT"Row has had it out for Gholston since th start, He's been on this website long enough to know why Gholston missed the time he has, so Gholston will never satisfy him. Let him learn, then judge, not Prejudge."
Row Said:
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 9:44pm EDT"In NCAA a lot of times an outside linebacker gets a free shot to the QB. (watch his tape) That will not happen in the NFL. I may be ignorant of progress, but to me, I see a guy spending more time with his helmet off or his hands on his hips, then on the field making plays. I don't like seeing that, especially when IMO he didn't fill a NEED! 4th round CB or a 9 year vet opposite Revis? "
Ray Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 4:15am EDT"Dunnie, the Jets weren't going to take Mayo regardless. And neither were the Pats if we passed on Vernon. And then there's Row, dropping something I think is supposed to be knowledge on us! Exactly what tape of his do you want us to watch?!! I don't know where you got tape of him as an outside linbacker cause it doesn't exist! If you saw him running free at the qb....... "
Ray Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 4:29am EDT"....it is because he just ran through or blew past an offensive tackle, like, oh I don't know, the FIRST PICK of the draft, Jake Long!!! Right now he's learning and much of that may be from the sideline. Only time will tell if he is going to pan out, but he's here now, so why not get behind him instead of looking for negatives? Be a fan, not the Prophet of Doom!!"
Drew Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 10:41am EDT"DV??? Relax on Crable. I agree he is a nice pick by the Pats in the middle rounds but better than Gholsten? I have seen a ton of Michigan games and Crable is a high energy quick LB... but he is less fluid than Gholsten in space and not nearly as strong. Crable will not be a every down player and Gholsten will be. The upside is huge for Gholsten. Thats why one goes #6 and one falls in the draft."
joe Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 12:20pm EDT"How can you possibly say gholston didnt feel a need. We had no pash rush at all. When you give quarterbacks a whole to throw theyll walk all over you. Gholston gives us a huge presence weve needed for a long time. And i have watched college tape they dont LET him sack the quarterback, those games arent set up. hes a big strong powerful fast physical guy. 4.65 at the combine and a 455 lb bench. "
Larry Said:
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 5:00pm EDT"Dunnie . I agree with you. This gets learned by playing actual games. I guess youll say Chad was right on by "deciding" to turn the ball over how many times last year? KC was learning after being thrown to the wolves, whats CP' s excuse for his "decisions"? "
Row Said:
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 1:20pm EDT"Ray, of course Vernon lined up down which would make him a DE, but he was way outside. I had time to look at some tape, unblocked for a sack vs Penn State and Wisconsin (also a fumble return). I remember seeing more. I just wanna see the guy play. I like having him on our team. "
Scotty Said:
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 6:55pm EDT"I went to Ohio State, and all I can say is, Vernon is a stud. Remember, he has to learn the defense. It took him some time at OSU to get his wheels. Once he does, he is a terror. "
