07/29 — Here are a few transactions for you before we get into the morning practice blog.
Eric Mangini announced at his midday news conference, still under way, that undrafted free agent RB Danny Woodhead, who injured his knee Friday and was waived/injured the next day, cleared waivers and is now on the Jets' injured reserve.
The Jets also have signed two players. One is WR Rudy Burgess (5'10", 186), a first-year WR whom the Colts signed as an undrafted free agent, then waived on Friday.
The Arizona State sports information people labeled him "one of the top all-purpose threats in the nation during his Sun Devil career," and it's easy to see why. In his four college seasons, he lined up at WR, TB and CB and on kickoff and punt returns, totaled 4,379 all-purpose yards and scored touchdowns four different ways (rushing, receiving, passing and KO return).
The other is LB Jerry Mackey. If you've heard his name before, it's not a case of déjà vu. By my unofficial count, the Jets have now signed Mackey for the fifth time. The first time was last Aug. 4 after Tampa Bay waived him. Then he was traded back to the Buccaneers, waived and re-signed by the Jets to the practice squad Oct. 4, released and re-signed to the P-squad Dec. 20, signed to a reserve/future contract Jan. 15, then waived April 24.
Mackey (6'1", 233) also has a hometown friend on the team. He and D'Brickashaw Ferguson both went to Freeport HS on Long Island.
With one roster spot available, another one had to be opened and it was with the waiving of punter/kicker Joe Smith, the late signee from the semipro Yakima Mavericks.
Burgess will wear No. 19, Mackey No. 46. And Smith, you probably knew, wore No. 4.
We'll report back after practice and again after Coach Mangini's news conference.

Tue, July 29, 2008 - 10:13am EDT"Randy, Is it just coincidence #4 is now available? Do you agree the Jets stance of No Comment is really a comment of interest in Favre? If they really have no interest, why don't they put the issue to bed? It can't be good for team unity with all of this speculation! Pennington has given more to this team and its fans than anyone in NY sports in the last 20 years The guy deserves the chance. Yes?"

Tue, July 29, 2008 - 10:24am EDT"Number 4 is now available.....I've been watching this team since Namath to Caster and Barkum....We need a QB....If I want to go watch fly balls, I go watch a baseball game....Fly balls get receivers killed, and make guys like Aaron Ross look like allpros. No receivers get more teed off on than Jet receivers...."

Tue, July 29, 2008 - 12:53pm EDT"Do you guys think Favre can come in and learn our offense and build chemistry with the WR's in a little over one month? I don't know if that is realistic. He has the right to first refusal in any trade so he may not even want to come to NY. "
Wayne Said:
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 1:10pm EDT"I agree Chris, no comment means management is interested in #4. All that does is create an uneasy feeling for CP& KC not to mention the team. QB is the most important position on your team & mgmt still has no clue who will lead this team. Make a decision! You're beginning to look like fools to the rest of the league. Jet's problem isn't the team, it management. "
TAtlas Said:
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 1:10pm EDT"I don't want to hear anything more about Chad (even though I like him) but a trade with him and a draft pick to Green Bay to Pick up Favre. Until then thats the only Pro Chad Talk I want to hear... And I think its beyond smart to keep this kid. He is going to be something when he returns . He is gonna be the future of our Running Game I can see it happening now"
MikeMc Said:
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 2:22pm EDT"Hypothetical, Brett comes here, Chad goes to Minn. Brett wins 7 games and retires again, and Chad beats GB and eliminates them from the playoffs. Hows GB feeling then, don't think it can happen? Chad's great in the domes, good O-line and great running game, let's not forget about that Minn defense. All Jet fan's will be crying in their soup watching Chad win a championship,& want to fire Tangini."

SteveB Said:
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 3:20pm EDT"Sorry guys but some of you are getting lost in the Favre hype: The last three years he has thrown 66 TD and 62 picks. Last yr. GB had a very good team and Aaron Rogers would have had success as well. Take last yr. out and he has thrown 41 TD and 47 picks. He is a selfish turnover machine way past his prime. GB will be very good without him this yr. GB is the NFC version of Jets QB is the ? "
SteveB Said:
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 3:25pm EDT"And they have ansered it with Rogers. In other words GB thinks they have as good a chance to reach their goal with an unproven QB as to put up with the Favre soap opera. GB is a well run org. and they are doing the smart thing passing a QB at the end of his career with an ego much bigger than his stats and a high cap # on to someone silly enough to buy in. The whole concept is silly. "
Ira Said:
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 4:22pm EDT"randy, They made a mistake by cutting Smith now. They made Graham take all the reps last year and i think that led to inconsistent year. "

Whos on the Madden Cover this year? Favre, if the curse would end hed stay retired. 2. Namath , Montanna, both great qbs, both couldnt stay retired and did decent with theyre"

Jason Funk Said:
Wed, July 30, 2008 - 12:20pm EDT"Any updates on Woodhead? How long do they think he will be out?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Jason, Danny is back with the Jets but on injured reserve. He's out for the year and will rehab so he can be ready to go in 2009."
JWNamath Said:
Wed, July 30, 2008 - 12:29pm EDT"Our best chance to win is sitting idly by in Mississippi right now."
JWNamath Said:
Wed, July 30, 2008 - 12:37pm EDT"SteveB, the reason GB was better last year was because they had a Defense and Favre had some receivers to throw to, AND they had a running game. I'll take Favre any day. I liked Chad but every throw he makes is a duck and is telegraphed. Any good DB knows he has time to recover and get to the ball before it gets there. Just watch the tape of Erlacher's Pick last yr. vs. Bears."
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, July 30, 2008 - 9:02pm EDT"Steve B I got some numbers for you buddy 4,000 yards 28 tds last year you root for Chad to throw his ducks all done but I am done with it. "
