File Under: Jerry Mackey, Joe Smith, Rudy Burgess

07/29 — Here are a few transactions for you before we get into the morning practice blog.

Eric Mangini announced at his midday news conference, still under way, that undrafted free agent RB Danny Woodhead, who injured his knee Friday and was waived/injured the next day, cleared waivers and is now on the Jets' injured reserve.

The Jets also have signed two players. One is WR Rudy Burgess (5'10", 186), a first-year WR whom the Colts signed as an undrafted free agent, then waived on Friday.

The Arizona State sports information people labeled him "one of the top all-purpose threats in the nation during his Sun Devil career," and it's easy to see why. In his four college seasons, he lined up at WR, TB and CB and on kickoff and punt returns, totaled 4,379 all-purpose yards and scored touchdowns four different ways (rushing, receiving, passing and KO return).

The other is LB Jerry Mackey. If you've heard his name before, it's not a case of déjà vu. By my unofficial count, the Jets have now signed Mackey for the fifth time. The first time was last Aug. 4 after Tampa Bay waived him. Then he was traded back to the Buccaneers, waived and re-signed by the Jets to the practice squad Oct. 4, released and re-signed to the P-squad Dec. 20, signed to a reserve/future contract Jan. 15, then waived April 24.

Mackey (6'1", 233) also has a hometown friend on the team. He and D'Brickashaw Ferguson both went to Freeport HS on Long Island.

With one roster spot available, another one had to be opened and it was with the waiving of punter/kicker Joe Smith, the late signee from the semipro Yakima Mavericks.

Burgess will wear No. 19, Mackey No. 46. And Smith, you probably knew, wore No. 4.

We'll report back after practice and again after Coach Mangini's news conference.

"SteveB, the reason GB was better last year was because they had a Defense and Favre had some receivers to throw to, AND they had a running game. I'll take Favre any day. I liked Chad but every throw he makes is a duck and is telegraphed. Any good DB knows he has time to recover and get to the ball before it gets there. Just watch the tape of Erlacher's Pick last yr. vs. Bears."
