File Under: Chad Pennington, Eric Mangini, Kellen Clemens, Boomer Esiason, Alan Faneca, Empire Challenge
06/26 — Long before the top high school football players from New York City and Long Island met in Tuesday evening's Empire Challenge at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium, I huddled with Boomer Esiason in the pressbox. Among the multitude of topics we covered was the 2008 Jets.
“The biggest question for the New York Jets is who’s their quarterback?”
And with that million-dollar question, Esiason began his analysis.
“The defense, you know, is going to be vastly improved,” he said. “You know the offense is going to be vastly improved simply because Alan Faneca is now on the offensive line. It makes them immediately better and significantly better. You have to believe Mangold and Ferguson are going to be top-quality players — Mangold should be a Pro Bowler.”
Then Boom returned to his original question.
“Is it Clemens or is it Chad?”
Beats me, I thought. So I looked at my fellow Maryland alum and former newyorkjets.com regular contributor and turned the tables on him. Perhaps Boomer might be leaning one way or the other himself.
“I have no feeling either way right now because both of them are so bland that you don’t know what either one is thinking,” he said frankly. “All I know is Eric Mangini has put them in a highly competitive situation, and I think it’s a great thing for both of them and hopefully it will bring out the best in each one of them.”
During his NFL career, Esiason participated in a few quarterback competitions. He believes the best way to handle the situation is to take an assertive approach.
“If you want the job, you have to fight for it. That’s all there is to it,” he said. “You can’t worry about politics and all this other crap. If you want the job and you want to be the man and you want to lead your football team, then you have to go get it.”

Management would never admit it but they have to be hoping Kellen wins the job because they drafted him in the 2nd rd. Chad will be tuff to beat out. This competition will make the Jets a better team. May the best man win. Good luck to both."

They have to have one of the guys ahead of the other. If not, I understand. Also, is Boomer in the Hall Of Fame? What a great QB he was, I remember his magical seasons with the Bengals and he did pretty good with us as well. "

Clemens is in good shape and should be ready to go out there. So Clemens should be able to take the jets to as high as possible."

This is a veteren team set up to start winning now. not in a couple seasons when a young QB gets ready. Alot of the problem was the line last year. People talk about Chads lack of arm strength but I don't remember ever really going deep with Clemens either."

Thu, June 26, 2008 - 12:53pm EDT"Wayne, are you sure Chad's not the answer? Without a top flight D in his tenure, he's won over 55% of his starts! No other Jet QB holds that distinction. I want to see him with protection, running game, and a great D; we should have all of that. True, the guy can't throw a frozen rope out pattern, but he can throw 40 to stretch d's. I think KC has the upper hand now, but CPs strength is 11 on 11. "

We have two very competitive guys competing for one starting job, clemens wins in arm strength, but chad has the accuracy, and chad also has the leadership ability required to lead this team, aswell as the fact (for the most part) he is a smart player and decision maker, with a solid o-line, it has to b CP."

Thu, June 26, 2008 - 5:33pm EDT"Both of these guys got heart and I like them both. Chad's passes tends to flutter and Kellen's passes gives defenses less time to react. KC is only going to get better and with more time in the pocket he might be able to make more plays to put us in the run for the playoffs. KC just needs to learn how to read defenses a little better to be a top notch QB. I hope KC takes the job and runs it!"

What makes me mad was that CP was benched last year becasue he couldn't stretch the defense. So they bring in KC and what happens? The guy who has this huge arm throws maybe 2 deep passes all season? The QB problem is more than just CP & KC. The play-caller needs to go!"
Charlie Said:
Thu, June 26, 2008 - 7:02pm EDT"On the subject of the Jets quarterback I think that the way to win the most games is with Chad Pennington. However, the offensive coordinator can not let himself or Chad fall into the trap of having a high completion percentage and absolutely no chance of an intermediate(15-30 yard completions) passing game. If I know there's no chance of these type of completions I'm sure the defense knows. "

He had an ok warm up season , but they had a horible O-line. this year the line is much more inproved and will give KC the time he needs to pick his target and make an accuate throw. Daunte Culpepper is still a free agent thats looking for a chance to win a starting job, why do you think the jets have yet to even bring him in for a look? With his arm strength and game experience, not to mention Coles and J-co as opposed to Porter and Curry, I think he can do it."

The Jets are notorious for sticking with the old veteran QBs to long. The end of the Testeverde days were painful, don't do the same with Chad. Kellen has a rocket of an arm, and he moves well out of the pocket, let him learn the defenses and this kid will start winning games!"

Coaching, nope, Herm left after 2 and Mangenius was there for number 3, so that leaves Chad. He would be a great quaterback, but with the arm strength of an 85 year old, he get the job done. Put Ainge in and let him take his lumps. It worked for the Colts and look where Peyton took them, to the TOP!!"

NYG stayed with him and he matured and gained experience and look what Eli did in the playoffs, he beat every team on enemy fields. Steve B Said:
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 4:42pm EDT"I am not buying in to the QB competition theory at all. I think the concept is nothing more than a poor cover up of some very poor personell decisions by tangini in 07. Kendal and the evaluation of the roster at the end of CY06 was a huge blunder on the part of mgt. so they play KC at the end of the year to make the public think the issue is a QB learning curve and not a roster issue. "

Let's roll the dice on either Clemens or Ainge (whoever has a better camp) and we know what to do next off season. Maybe KC is the answer, maybe not. Last year was not enough to rule him out. Starting Chad would be mortgaging the future to save HC job today. He's not the guy."

Wed, July 2, 2008 - 1:26pm EDT"Pete, CP's not physically done. It's just come out that he should have spent 4-6 weeks rehabbing a high ankle sprain. when I watch replays of that hit, I can't believe he got up, came back in, got a TD pass, and rehabbed to be able to start the next week. Not having a plant foot definately will affect the velocity of throws outside the hashes; the ones that were getting picked! CP will be QB!"

Wed, July 2, 2008 - 8:55pm EDT"Pennington will be the starter for 08. He will do much better throwing the ball with a bit more time due to the o-line improvements (hopefully) As was proven last year ,none of our qbs can throw at all while lying on their back. Perhaps with improved line Chris Baker could be used as his skills warrant. Or with all the talk today, theres always Brett Favre!!! (16 years too late)"

Thu, July 3, 2008 - 2:37pm EDT"hey guys.... What are the chances of Brett Farve coming out of retirement and wearing the green and white? Stranger things have happened and we do seem to be in a win now situation. He still has 2 good years left and a rocket for an arm. I would think he may be worth a 3rd or 4th round pick next year.Seems that the Packers have no interest in bringing him back."

Fri, July 4, 2008 - 11:20am EDT"Chad will start. If he can't win games, then they'll put in Clemens. Although, I think it made little difference last season that they did that. With the improved line, the RB's need to get the ball to the red zone, then let Chad work his red zone science. With any luck, we'll make the playoffs. If the NFC West is as bad as they're predicting, that will hopefully bring in a few clutch wins."

Fri, July 4, 2008 - 3:28pm EDT"im a big chad fan but he throws like a guy with two rotator injuries. Don't you think defenses set up for that! If they start Clemens who has a great arm and is very smart they'll get 10 or 11 wins. Let's give this kid a chance! He got three wins last year with no offense line."

Mon, July 7, 2008 - 5:56pm EDT"chad has been great and done alot for the team, but its time for him to step aside and let the young blood have a shot we need a QB with a farther throwing game and faster head game!"

Tue, July 8, 2008 - 1:11pm EDT"there is no doubt in my mind chad will get the start, yeah he had a rough year, last year, but he still has the experience, look at vinny he wasn't a great qb, but he had the experience to carry the team, i say give chad a chance you have two other great qb's if it doesn't work, but don't you think we owe it to him for all he has done for our team, go jets"
philipe Said:
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 7:15pm EDT"Chad Pennington has had to learn to live with his rotator cuff injuries by compensating with smarts, accuracy and timing. The latter two were severely compromised when he injured his ankle in the first game against the Patriots. That he still has it in him to succeed was evident in the second game against the Patriots; he is far from done."

Tue, July 8, 2008 - 9:57pm EDT"chad is a great QB, everybody knows that last year was a bad year.If chad can go like the 2006 season without getting hurt, the jets can have a great year."

Sat, July 12, 2008 - 2:05pm EDT"Chad Pennington is a great QB. Probably the smartest QB, next to P.Manning. Based on the last couple of years, I don't think P. Manning would have agreed to play behind the line Pennington had to play behind. With the improvement in his line, he will play like its college again. People complain about his arm strength and I know its weakened, but this is the guy who could hit Randy Moss in stride. "
PJ327 Said:
Tue, July 22, 2008 - 11:02pm EDT"Steg...he could hit Moss instride when he was 22 years old and healthy...not 31 and twice removed from MAJOR shoulder surgery"
Dewitt Said:
Wed, July 23, 2008 - 12:13am EDT"Chad is our guy, no offense to Clemens. You have to be an idiot to think clemens gives us a better chance to win . Ok, so Chad doesn't have a great arm, but the guy is so smart it's rediculous and there is nobody better at reading defenses than #10."
willy wonka Said:
Sat, August 9, 2008 - 5:44am EDT"You're right, Pennington is a great quarterback. That's probably why the Jets just cut him 4 weeks before the season starts. Great QB's get cut ALL THE TIME."
