File Under: Chad Pennington, David Harris, James Ihedigbo, Kellen Clemens, Kerry Rhodes, Brett Ratliff, Terrell Owens, Bubba Franks
05/15 — Bubba Franks made his presence felt at today's OTA practice.
Every time you looked up, Franks, the 6'6", 265-pound tight end who came over from the Packers as a street free agent in March, was snagging a pass for six.
There were some nice snatches at helmet level or above from Chad Pennington in red zone drills. There was No. 88 reaching for a "touchdown" in the corner of the end zone on a zip from Kellen Clemens, then grabbing a pass over the middle past S Eric Smith from No. 3 QB Brett Ratliff in 7-on-7s.
Franks wasn't alone on the receiving end of some sharp Clemens throws. KC also hit WR Chansi Stuckey past S Kerry Rhodes at the goal line on a ball Stuckey made a nice adjustment on. Then in 11-on-11s, he found fast WR David Clowney for a leaping grab over the middle and sure-handed David Ball on a leaping snatch down the sideline.
Pennington showed nice touch and even a little zip on his throws. He hit Laveranues Coles on an out, then came back with a flip to Thomas Jones, with his rolled-up jersey sleeves, that would have gone for big yardage.
Even though the passing game is a major component of these OTAs, the defense showed up, too, against the pass and the run.
Second-year LB David Harris showed nice early range, reaching to break up a pass to TE Jason Pociask and then running to the ball for what would have been a tackle (these are no-pads-no-tackling drills) as Leon Washington darted around end.
S James Ihedigbo, the first-year man back for his second off-season with the Jets, was the recipient of a Ratliff batted ball, which he intercepted and took off with for what would've been a long return.
Special teams also got their sessions, and as is becoming routine, Mike Nugent ended the main portion of practice with a 48-yard field goal straight down the middle and high into the net on the Jets' upper grass field.
New Jets defenders Calvin Pace and Kris Jenkins each was spotted running a penalty lap. And for those who've asked about CB Justin Miller, he's not working in defensive drills yet but was doing a lot of running.
The Run for the Rhodes
I checked in with Kerry Rhodes about the football camp he and Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens held during the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago.
"It was the first Kentucky Derby Youth Football Camp/Clinic," Rhodes said. "I was able to do it back at Louisville, at the indoor stadium there. And I was able to get T.O. to come aboard and help me out. It was a good event. We had around 200 kids and we had fun."
It seems Rhodes and Jerricho Cotchery are in competition for the most camps sponsored by Jets players. The two Alabama natives co-hosted one camp last year and Cotchery had a second camp in Wayne, N.J. Now Rhodes is up to two.
The 'Bama connection was also at work with the Rhodes-Owens odd-couple team.
"I wouldn't say we're great friends but we're good friends," he said. "We're both from Alabama. I've seen him. He opened up a spot in Birmingham."
And now the two have opened up a clinic beachhead in horse country.

Pace and Jenkins welcome aboard and to the penalty lap club. Prediction Jenkins runs the most PL's this camp. Good learning experience. My boys Clowney and my main man Stuckey seem to be in mid season form. For all those doubters out there the WR competition wll be fun."

He was injured his last year in college, and reports were positive on him last year in camp. He could be the extra threat we need, if he can stay healthy."

Frank Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 3:19pm EST"Ira, ok that's great so Tangini made an advance. Baker has also been a steady and improving player who is playing within the limitations of the offense. It's extremely disturbing that he like the others are complaining that he was promised an upgrade. He is the best TE on their roster and they need to resolve this issue . With the money spent this is a classic case of penny wise and pound foolish."
Ira Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 4:01pm EST"Frank, I like Baker and he is their best TE right now. But the #'s don't lie. His overall #'s rated him as the #18th overall TE in the league. It could have been better if they were able to use him more. He had a higher completion rate then Gates and Gonzales so the talent is there. Let him earn his new contract this year. He and Keller are the future with Franks giving them good depth. GO JETS!!"
CEDRIC Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 4:20pm EST"So we should pay a guy after 1 good season & a pay advance? Really? thats all it takes? so we gonna pay him Bcuz he's lookin at other TEs pockets, like what they make affects him? Stick w/ the other point of inconsistent player payment, cuz all TE gotta do is block & catch, lasttime i checked Franks did that w/one of the best QBs ever, TEs are expendable unless ur Gates, Clark, Gonzalez, Heap. "
CEDRIC Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 4:25pm EST"Baker aint close to them dudes, also they promise to look at the deal, not to change it, you cant make everyone happy. People can bring up that keller cant block, But blocking isnt a skill your born with, its something thats Coached, like learning not to fumble ala Tiki barber, so he's a work in progress & determine to prove critics wrong."
Frank Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 6:36pm EST"Ira and Cedric you just don't get it. There is an underlying psychology in all this that creates dissension in the lockeroom. Tangini does not have a consistant policy. Coles and Moore last year did not deserve a raise but got one. Kendall did but they canned him and Rhodes got his all had 2 years remaining. This inconsistancy creates hard feelings and will once again ruin harmony on the field."
Frank Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 6:44pm EST"Oh really Ira you want to start quoting numbers then Coles should be paid like a 3rd WR with his numbers. What about the laughable money paid to Pace who is now one of the highest paid LB's in the game. Baker played within a weak system that stunk and did what he was told to do. He is one of the bright spots in the offense with Cotchery. We lose him and we have major problems at TE this year."
Pete Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 8:55pm EST"I like Baker a lot but I have to give this one to Tangini.Hated what they did with Kendall, but we are talking about Chris Baker. He is really in no position to make demands. As annoyed everybody is with Coles, he is a playmaker and warrior. Best WR on team and willing to take big hits over the middle.Parcells loved Keyshawn Uncle Joe, and he would have loved Coles. Play hard, parctice hard!"
Pete Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 9:00pm EST"Parcells loves anybody that plays the game right and Coles does, even if he whines from time to time. With Franks on roster, Baker just signed his death sentence. If you pay Baker, what do you do when a star holds out? As bad as O-line was last year, how often did we see double TE's or a FB anywhere on the field? Baker just isn't in position to play hardball. "
Pete Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 9:07pm EST"I stand by the Keller pick, but don't hold your breath regarding him developing his blocking. It's like defense in basketball, it's about attitude and desire. Keller is our 1st rd WR, not a complete TE. If Franks wasn't here, Baker may have a chance. With Franks on the roster and our new FB, say goodbye to Chris. He just isn't good enough to hold out. Maybe Bender can catch the ball!?"
CEDRIC Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 9:30pm EST"There we go Frank, thats the argument you have to go back to, not that "best TE on the Roster" crap, Kendall & Coles are leaders & not paying THEM causes dissension Bcuz losin them exposes a hole of tangible & intangible value, Baker isnt a leader, he's a player, who has no leverage. They paid Rhodes, Cotchery, Pouha, Gauranteed Coles, & upgraded the needs. NO we Dont have major problems..."
CEDRIC Said:
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 9:52pm EST"lose Baker, your outta your mind!! He's a good player & i hope we keep him around, But Frank, your acting as if he's been a Pillar of the offense for years like Kendall or Coles & like we have no talent to block or catch if he leaves. if this was such a big deal, the press & analyst would be allover this like the kendall thing, but u know why their not, cuz Baker aint all that. Im not even gonna Retort back after you post cause your arguement is paper thin, we gonna agree to disagree. "

DMONEY Said:
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 2:52am EST"I think Baker is currently the best TE on the Jets roster, but is an average NFL TE. He is not a difference maker in games. He doesn't deserve top $ just because he is your best TE. I predict that by the end of the season, Keller will be a more impactful offensive player than Baker...epecially between the twenty yard lines. His presence will create opportunities for others. "
DMONEY Said:
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 3:13am EST"Also, Franks will be very serviceable in the red zone and can be a nice target in the endzone. Baker's skills can be replaced. He doesn't attack the ball when it is thrown to him...like winslow, Gates or Gonzalez do. Keller, based on video footage, seems to be both explosive downfield and physical on the football. He appears to play with authority and purpose. Baker plays a very soft game. GoJETS"

Sat, May 17, 2008 - 7:55am EST"Cedric and Ira, the best stats that indicates Baker's worth i sthat he caught 70% of his passes for 1st downs. That's higher than all other name TE except Gates. When you're almost always in a third and long situation (see weak running game here) and the other team is blitzing, the TE is not going to be able to be your receiver because he is stuck blocking to keep the QBs from getting killed."

Sun, May 18, 2008 - 6:33am EST"What team drafted the best tight end coming out this year? The answer to all of those question is THE JETS THATS WHO ! Jenkins = 1 win, Pace = 1 win, Gholston = 1 win, Faneca = 1 win, Woody = 1 win & Richardson + Keller = 1 win. anything less than 9 & 7 is unacceptable looking at the schedule they could be 10 & 6 "
Tom Spicer Said:
Sun, May 18, 2008 - 7:30am EST"Looking at the schedule if the Jets lose @ Chargers, @ Titans, @ Seahawks & 2 times to the Pats home & away that is only 5 loses. There is no reason they can not win every other game on the schedule. They now have the O line to run the ball & to kill the clock when they have a lead & with Keller they have a TE that a saftey will have to cover & our WR'S will not get double teamed on every play on "
Tom Spicer Said:
Sun, May 18, 2008 - 7:42am EST"D with Pace & Gholston we will finally have a pass rush & Jenkins is the key if he makes them have to double him on every play it will free up everyone in the front 7 to make plays, check out rotoworld they predict David Harris to lead the league in tackles. Ray Said:
Sun, May 18, 2008 - 2:31pm EST"Frank, my point was that as usual, the media is fueling this by playing a clip that only gives half the story making it look like something different was being said than actually was. And it is a competition, they both want to start and realize it is up for grabs. It only becomes a controversy when one of them plays the "start me or trade me" card."

Sun, May 18, 2008 - 2:47pm EST"Hell Spicer, there is no reason we can't win at Tenn and at Seatlle and we've always played the Chargers tough out there. Why not 14-2?? LOL! You are ringing up 2 vs. Buff? And when is the last time we gave Den a good game? While I am excited by the moves, there are way too many questions with this team. How many of you predicted 4-12 this time last year? I hope you prove prophetic Spicer!!"
jets4ever Said:
Sun, May 18, 2008 - 3:36pm EST"Tom Spicer i have read every ones comments every day and never gave mine but now i doun't have to because you said it better u r right on the mark we share the same thoughs about our Jets"
Frank Said:
Sun, May 18, 2008 - 6:43pm EST"Hey Ray what do you really think of Chris Henry??? By the way there is a QB controversy and clearly defined as this. KC was the starter ending the season. He replaced a horrible and ineffective QB in Chad and KC did nothing to lose his status. Instead Mangini decides it's better for the team to have an open QB competition. You don't win championships or your players respect doing things this way."
CEDRIC Said:
Sun, May 18, 2008 - 6:51pm EST"But Dont get it twisted Spicer, We have a Good team this Year. Now that the talent appears to be here, the coaches have to put them in the right position, & the players have to execute. At 4-12 we have enough blame to go around."
Ray Said:
Sun, May 18, 2008 - 8:10pm EST"Yeah Frank, for us in here and for the media it is a controversy. But for CP and KC and for the Jets staff it is a competition. They know where it stands at this point. The starter will be the one who earns it in the pre season. And only Mangini knows if Kellen gets an edge for ending last year as the starter. Oh and I guess I was a little vague..... NO CHRIS HENRY!!! HA!"
HDR Said:
Mon, May 19, 2008 - 3:28pm EST"Hey Tom, Let's take Mangini's approch with this years schedule; Let not overlook anybody; "THAT'S WHY THEY PLAY THE GAME". On the C Baker front, I too would love to have C Baker back in green this year, I can see the Jets in many multipule TE sets this year. I think the jets will use Keller as a big WR more so than a TE. They can field JC,LC, Keller in the slot, Bubba and C baker on the line...."
dave Said:
Mon, May 19, 2008 - 8:20pm EST"The jets need to stop focusing on tight ends and recievers and look more to some good corners and finally sort out this qb competition then they can put themselves in a leaque with the more elite teams of the nfl "
Hogan Said:
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 9:57am EST"We all Love Baker but what is with all the whining this year. These guys need to understand coming off a 4-12 season you need to make some changes. Work hard earn it this year and I'm sure they will take care of you next time. And as for RHODES getting his deal, If you question that you prob. should not be watching football. That was one of the best moves we made this offseason."
HDR Said:
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 10:56am EST"Hey Dave, we now have Revis, Miller, and Lowery, Not bad for a start. We'll add at least two more.. My money is on James Inedigbo..The OB competition is good. It will make both players better in the long run. Kellen will utimately win the job. 13 other NFL teams will be starting young QB's this season. and the remainder starting QB with less than 5 yrs starting exp. We will be fine with Kellen!!!"
