04/29 — You can't tell your newest Jets without a scorecard, but here are the number assignments for the team's six draft picks heading into this weekend's rookie minicamp. A somewhat interesting note: None of the six has received the same number he wore last season in college.

Randy Lange Said:
"Dunnie, when I was with Vernon on Saturday, he didn't know what number he was getting and didn't express a preference. I'll ask him whether LT influenced his decision this weekend."

Tue, April 29, 2008 - 8:13pm EDT"WOW, outside the retired jets numbers,we all know and love. two of MY alltime favorites. #83 George Sauer & # 29 Bake Turner. I never got a chance to meet either one of them, but to me I really liked both of them. Me being from Oxford Mississippi. we didn;t get to see them play that often. Now as a54 year old kid I STILL love The NEW YORK JETS. thank-you for your time ."
Randy Lange Said:
"No, sammy #7, thank you."
Drew Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 8:34pm EDT"Love that Gholsten is wearing #56. If he plays half a well as this good will look in our uniform we will be okay..... Hopefully Keller can make us forget McCareins quickly. I cannot beleive how bad he was for us........I think I am going with the Kerry Rhodes #25 jersey this year."
Ira Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:06pm EDT"No # 14 is not weird for a WR. Every summer there is always a WR that has a # in the teens. A guy to watch is J. Caulcrick a RB from Michigan State. 6'0" and 254 lbs. This guy will make this team and be the perfect short yardage and goaline back they need. BTW Dave Hutchinson did a great feel good story on him in todays Star Ledger. Everybody check it out. Its real life!!!!!!!"
Frank Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:12pm EDT"Hey Drew I'll send you one of my old Jersey's. It's 56 not 25 might be a little big though!"
Frank Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:25pm EDT"Everyone knows how badly I wanted Gohlston and I am saying it right here and now he is going to be the best pick of this entire draft class. If Mangini motivates and works him into the defense properly he will have double digit sacks every year and will break the sack record. There is no one in the NFL that combined has all his measurables. They better not be dropping him back in pass coverage."
Drew Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 10:42pm EDT"Is that your Lance Mehl jersey from the early 1980's Frank?? It might be a little snug in the arms since I bring the big guns to the show....... The one thing we did agree on the whole time is Gholsten. This guy is the real deal and when Coach Tressel says he will dominate on the next level I listen. "
zartan Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 11:42pm EDT"i hope that Gholston doesnt come to N.Y talking about he doesnt want to hurt QBs. be like Reggie White and Hold that jesus stuff for after the game.if he embrace the nasty atittude of the NFL he will be great cause he has it all.best skills in this draft.hope he has the heart. numbers fit the players. im supersticious with #s could stand seeing Jordan in 45 thinkBird in a # 4 jersey."

Wed, April 30, 2008 - 8:08am EDT"i hope gholston turns out to b the freak he seems to b on film and not a bust like sum people on espn say!! i feel our biggest steal out of all is danny woodhead from chadron state 5'7 runs a 4.38 forty a guy that small and that fast in my eyes is liable to get lost in the pile and break huge runs if not runs..def sum kick returns !! and or punt returns"
Ric Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 9:54am EDT"We did get Danny Woodhead? SWEET!!! So pumped up for the start of the season. Can't wait to hear the sound of "Tom Brady, meet Vernon Gholston, Oh...you can get up now Tom." JETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Wed, April 30, 2008 - 10:00am EDT"Frank, I agree gholston is going to be unstopable. He was my first choise after the 2 Longs, now I am thinking he has more potential to grow than Chris Long, But If you think he will never drop back you have a thing or 2 to learn about football my freind."
Andrew Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 10:07am EDT"If what they say is true, and the jets did sign Jehuu Caulcrick, then the Jets got a straight up ball player. Being from western NY I have followed his career since high school and while he may not have the size or speed of a #1 draft pick this kid can play and I would not be suprised at all to see him make the roster."
Frank Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 10:25am EDT"No...Drew 56 is my "Frank the Tank" Jersey buddy from my playing days! By the way Drew I never....ever...ever wore any Jersey other than my own. In my opinion it's a bit foolish for grown men to be walking around in other player's jersey's leave it for the kids. Geeezzzz Hogan first Drew then Dunnie, Ray and Cedric and now you give me a break already. I was being facetiuos about the pass coverage."
Ira Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 10:40am EDT"Andrew, Callahan will explain to Schotty how he used Crockett while he was with the Raiders and they will use Caulcrick in the same way. The Jets haven't had a good short yardage back since Jordan, Hector and Baxter. GO JETS!!!"
Frank Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 11:05am EDT"Watched the Jets Dolphins game from 2000 on NFL network the other night. It was great watching Vinnie throw darts all over the field something I miss sorely. Also I forgot how much they threw to Martin and Anderson downfield during those years something we have not done in a long time and missing from our O. Chad has been a nice QB but thinking about his tenure we have always had a hard time...."
Frank Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 11:09am EDT"...scoring points with him. Every year we are blaming the O- Coordinator for the lack of scoring and that has been a common theme throughout Pennington's tenure with the team. He never would have been able to bring us back like Vinny did in that game. This QB competition is a farce Clemens deserves to be named the starter he weathered a hurricane last year and he gutted it out. I admire that."
Frank Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 11:15am EDT"Tangini needs to settle the Baker situation quickly. As I've stated before they created this mess by giving Moore and Coles new contracts when they absolutely did not deserve them. Cut Kendall when he did deserve one and gave Rhodes one that he did deserve. There is no pattern here or any sanity to this. No other team in the league has had this much of a problem. Trade him or pay him do something!"
uncle joe Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 11:31am EDT"Im really feeling this TE pick.I think hes gonna be the steal of the draft,we gave up a 4 to move up,big deal!Wait the biggest steal could be Jenkins. If this guy plays like he should ,with Hitman behind him, with Rhodes behind him!Do we Play the Raiders this year?I cant wait to crunch Mcfadden."
uncle joe Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 11:51am EDT"Hey Randy,do you know what Baker is asking for?He does deserve a raise, for the simple fact that he sacrifices statts for team.He was always under used here, having to baby sit Ferg making millions.when they do throw him the ball he catches everything!Feel bad he has no leverage at all now but Id hate to loose him.Doesnt Barret get 4 mill a year?Lets restructure that.Start D.Coleman"
uncle joe Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 11:58am EDT"Hey Randy, did Kenyan Coleman have the most tackles of all D-Linemen in the entire NFL last season? If so,how come no one talks about this?I think thats pretty much doing a good job.I never see him down field making tackles,so I guess thats all around the line of scrimage.Nice work. With him and Elam,I bet Parcells wishes he kept to himself,I guess thats why we went after Pace so aggresively."
Randy Lange Said:
"According to Stats Inc., Kenyon Coleman was tied with Baltimore DT Kelly Gregg for the NFL lead among defensive linemen in 2007 with 83 tackles. Keep in mind that tackles are always an unofficial statistic. For instance, Gregg beat out Coleman, 84-82, by Elias Sports Bureau's compilation of pressbox play-by-play numbers, and Jets coaches' video breakdown gave KC 90 tackles. But you're right, uncle joe, any of those numbers is a good job."
Damone Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 12:47pm EDT"Is anybody else getting tired of Todd McShay dissin V.Gholston? There has been so much talk about him "taking games or plays off"...the man now has no chose but to bring his A game everydown. You're right Zartan,i hope Gholston does try to hurt NFL QB's.Sometimes he just looks like one of those players that want to be dirty.I hope someone gets hurt BAD!!No more being nice."
Ta Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 1:52pm EDT"I have to agree with some of you on the facts about Chris Baker. I think he is a good player and has done great things for the team. But honestly what has Chris done in aspects of helping the Jets get to the playoffs. That is what ultimately matters. He sacrifices a lot and I would hate to see him go. But Baker should just keep his mouth quiet and I gaurantee next year he gets his raise. "
uncle joe Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 2:06pm EDT"Hey Damone,be careful what you wish for we are the ones that usually get hurt bad.The only thing I like about Gholston is the team he is on.I hated the pick.I pray Im wrong.Couldnt wait to get rid of Abraham and now hes back.6th pick should play every down and do it all not just rush the QB.But if Keller follows our second pick trend(Mangold,Harris)Im happy.Wouldve loved a trade like NE did."
Ira Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 2:21pm EDT"Can't see Baker being o this team. It will get resolved before camp starts. They will not have another fiasco like last year. Franks will be the starter and they will bring in another veteran just in case. Keller who will be a weapon this year is not ready to take on the full role of a TE. Let him catch 50 passes for 600 yds and score 4 TD's and i will be very happy."
Vince Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 2:23pm EDT"Hey Randy, the biggest worry I have in the draft was with ainge the could have snagged Colt Brennon easily and also the Jets could'ove took a WR insteade of a very athletic TE. They Jets instead of putting him in the slot, could put him in a WR position besides in the slot. He runs like a WR and can catch like one. This draft pick the Jets earned in the 1st round with the TE was OK to me"
Ray Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 3:12pm EDT"Colt Brennan will be a career clip board holder. A bunch of padded stats playing against weak competition in a Xbox offense. We didn't give Coles a new contract we just guaranteed the last two years and he would have been here for those years anyway so we didn't really give him anything except peace of mind."
Alan Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 3:23pm EDT"I never really followed division 2 schools until i heard about this danny woodhead kid being signed so i tryed lookin at some his game tape, and he has a very unique style hes got speed and isnt scared of taken a hit but he uses his small size in a way unheard of. He ducks around and just outruns and whe he jukes its just amazing. Im so glad we got him i mean over 7000 yards dang. I see a star. "
CEDRIC Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 3:29pm EDT"I hope the Baker thing does get solved soon, at this point he is expendable and I hope they learned from last year. Todd Mcshay is a dillweed, VG numbers dont lie, so thats all he can say, this kid was playing for free n now he's getting a salary, I assume he's gonna bring it on every play. Guys, lets just see how it all blends together. And every team has contract issues, some just dont go public"
Drew Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 3:52pm EDT"Vince?? Your worried about Colt Brennan?? Who cares. We drafted a 6'6 kid who won SEC games for 3 years. Plus Brennan didnt get drafted for a reason, he was a tiny system QB whose game does not translate to the NFL. Also there was a reason zero WR's got drafted in the 1st round. They were all overrated. We got a a kid who creates major matchup problems for any team we play in Keller. Be happy!!"
CEDRIC Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 4:59pm EDT"Vince, you also forgot we have a slot WR reciever name Chansi Stuckey who had a pretty damn good Preseason before he hurt his foot, and he will be fighting for a roster spot as well, ask Randy about him."
MikeMc Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 5:20pm EDT"CEDRIC Todd Mckshay IS a dillweed, I dont know how VG will turn out, but the way this guy has been bashing him is disgusting I'd say its a safe bet VG was near the top of everyones draft board . He has me listening to Kiper who I use to despise. No rookie should be bashed before he plays a down in the pros. These guys are excited they have families who watch listen and believe these talking heads."
MikeMc Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 5:28pm EDT"Mccariens old number was 81 or was that the amount of drops he had during his tenure in green and white. See ,bash failing veterans not raw rookies Mcshay, you give us Mc's a bad name. JETS in '08 or maybe '09, o.k. '10 the latest. I really do love the makeup of this team."
Darrell Said:
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 7:11pm EDT"as for McShay... if our guy 'took plays off' and still managed to set an OSU record amount of sacks, imagine what's gonna happen when Bryan Cox gets ahold of him. Jim Tressel would argue the 'takes plays off'. -- Randy, I heard D. Lowery is/was a Jets fan. Is that true? I think this kid might be a nice addition to a long line of Jets 4th round gems. Killer D this year! Early bye week! JETS!!!!!"
Randy Lange Said:
"Darrell, Dwight Lowery didn't say he was a fan of the Jets growing up during his conference call with reporters, but he spoke highly of the opportunity the Jets are giving him and said "I hope to bring a good situation to them.""

Wed, April 30, 2008 - 9:37pm EDT"can someone explain to me what DMC talent is.the jet should pay Baker, hes a proven talent and had he played horriable the jets would have cut him.i dont want to hear that he signed a contract crap.the NFL contracts are written with inviable ink.factor in Jenkins and we had 1 of the best drafts.Steelers stole Mendnhall, that guys going to be a snot nose runner.i admire this teams success."

Thu, May 1, 2008 - 7:51am EDT"Hey Guys ... I might have to repost this if another radar post goes up this morning =). I just did a survey at ESPN.com regarding quarterback competitions for this season ... their are a lot of them. But the opinion on the JETS situation is the closest. Seems that 45% think Chad should start ... 65% Kellen. Just FYI."
phil linsky Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 8:52am EDT"LOVE how the new regime handles the draft.....get the 2 or 3 guys will make an impact immediatly, rather than draft 5 or 6 "maybe's"."
Schuyler Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 9:14am EDT"Lowery was a great addition to an already excellent defensive back unit . As far as the Keller pick goes, I couldn't be happier. This guy is a nightmare for LB's and if we keep Baker I'll be ecstatic, the guy has phenomenal hands and is very productive, just need to throw him the ball and he'll come down with it. Anyway looks like a good draft class, GO JETS! "
Schuyler Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 9:23am EDT"One more thing I wanted to add about Keller, we all remember what happened in the fourth quarter of what seemed like every game last year. The Jets trailed, Pennington had nowhere to go over the middle, so he threw that same out pattern to LC or JC and got picked. Keller gives him the option of hitting the middle and opening up the field, again, I really like this pick. "
Ira Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 9:33am EDT"Dunnie, Not a knock on Clemens but Chad will end up starting. Can't see Clemens beating out Chad in camp. Actually i am really interested to see how Ainge plays this summer and see if he could compete with Clemens for the job next year or the year after. This will be a very interesting camp and i am sure the media will have a field day on writing about the QB battle."
Dan Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 9:55am EDT"Randy: Thanks for the update, but don't forget Neil O'Donnell also wore #14."
Randy Lange Said:
"Dan, Neil O'Donnell is listed as the last Jet to wear No. 14 in the regular season."
Frank Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 10:13am EDT"Phil drafting a few specific players in each draft and giving up picks to do so is not the way you build a team as a matter of fact it leads to disaster down the road. The Jets should have alot more picks next year and should continue to gather picks by trading players who don't fit "their system". There was a lot of 3rd round talent this year and we missed out on some good players."
zartan Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 10:21am EDT"Guys, the truth is that while i love Chad and was/am desperate for a new QB,Chads the best we have.I have a feeling that Kellen will regress this season with the liitle he showed aready.Only Chad gets starting QB money so if were keeping him this is our group of QBs.Hope this Ainge kid is a steal and comes on earlly.it would be perfect to win a superbowl with Chad but if these QBs...1st round nx yr"

Thu, May 1, 2008 - 10:30am EDT"I am amazed how these sports analst keep thier jobs. They criticize anyone they want & when they are wrong, no apoligies, just continue to criticize others. McShay and Sean Salsbury are the most egotiscal guys. ESPN fired Salsbury. Maybe McShay will be next. Gholston was 1 of 6 players invited to RCMH for the draft. Let him enjoy it instead criticizing him. He had to be on most list to be there."
Russell Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 11:10am EDT"I'm satisfied with the JETS 2008 draft. I've seen some of the undrafted rookies the JETS have signed, but I didn't see them address the depth along the defensive line. Two players I would like to see the JETS sign are DE/DT Dave Howell and Casey Tyler, both played in a 3-4 defense for Portland State. I would also like them to sign OLB Vincent Redd of Liberty another pass rusher."
CEDRIC Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 11:24am EDT"Frank, you have the right idea abot how to handle the draft, but our 3rd round pick was actually KRIS JENKINs, so i say we got some talent out of the 3rd round, a proven player at that. And they had the savvy to still get our 5th RND back to get Ainge, Browns gave up alot more for the talent they grabbed in the off season. So I still think we are on the right track."
CEDRIC Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 11:29am EDT"MIKEMc, try to invest in NFL network, The Dillweeds dont grow over there. I have alot more respect for Kiper after this year, especially over Mcshay. But i can't wait to get rid of ESPN to see some real analysis. I still give Props to Tom Jackson, Cris Carter, and Mike Ditka who speaks from his heart. But all the rest "Dill..." well you know where im going with it"
Drew Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 11:51am EDT"Suprise!!!! I disagree Frank. Tangini finds specific players they want and they go get them. They traded up and got Revis and Harris last year and both will lead our defense in 08. They clearly trust the scouting staff. As you stated they have multiple picks next year. I hope they continue to use the extra picks to go get talent...not hope it falls to them...Plus we did get Jenkins with that 3rd."
Frank Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 12:56pm EDT"I don't have a problem trading up for specific players you have to stockpile draft picks in order for that to happen. They could have done a much better job of stockpiling picks. I like the Keller pick but we could have stayed put and drafted Hardy or Kelly and used one of our 3 fourth round picks to get back into the 3rd. 10 draft picks in 2 years creates depth problems in the future plus..."
Frank Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 1:04pm EDT"...your not developing any players for the future. In the end you hurt depth and development the elite teams know this. This is the last year for this nonsense Tangini can't continue down this path history has proven time and again this strategy does not work. Also this is not about giving a 3 and 5 for Jenkins it's about making sure you have 7-10 picks every year."
Frank Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 1:07pm EDT"By the way Cedric why bring up the Browns no one here said they did the right thing. Look at the Chiefs and the Dolphins that is how you build a program. Both organizations traded and cut a bunch of players some in their prime and are revamping their roster that is how you build a winner."
Wilhelm III Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 1:11pm EDT"Finally we have a no. 81 who will catch the ball & is fast ! I too first thought we should go WR but if he can learn to block the possibilities are endless on his use. He reminds me a bit of, & i hate to say it, J. Mitchell, sans the attitude. After watching alot of the draft this year, have to say Mel Kiper may know his stuff but is a real arrogant piece of work. Randy perhaps you can teach him"
Ray Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 1:16pm EDT"Frank's not right or wrong. It just depends on the state of the team. The last couple years we've had guys in place so we could target specific needs. The year the Tuna took over we needed bodies and he turned that #1 pick into a boatload of picks when all was said and done. I think these guys have used FAs and trades to allow us to go after needs, but that won't always be the case."
James Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 1:35pm EDT"I applaud the New York Jets for not giving out the #28 or #80 again. Those numbers will always belong to Curtis Martin and Wayne Chrebet. #28 and #80 should be retired out of respect for their significant and sustained contributions to the NYJ organization. In closing, a sincere thank you to the New York Jets for respecting the legacy of these players and keeping their numbers out of circulation!"
phil Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 2:23pm EDT"My question during draft ....was it neccessary to give up that pick to move up 6 for Keller?.......shouldn't we have risked getting him at 36......and if NOT we could have picked up a highly rated WR at 36 Plus keep our pick???????"
Dan Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 2:53pm EDT"Randy -- Thanks. I read right past your mention of Neil O'Donnell. Didn't Troy Taylor also wear #14 in the early '90s?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Dan, you got me on that one. Troy Taylor did wear No. 14 in 1990-91. I'll make the correction on the Radar entry now."
rawgoodfella Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 3:50pm EDT"I agree the Jets should definetly retire #28 and # 80, especially #80, Chrebet was the best and the toughest possession reciever in Jets history, he also flew under the radar of the NFl during his career, he deserves his number retired."
Wilhelm III Said:
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 4:24pm EDT"Phil, sometimes you have to take a chance on these type of players. We did it on harris last year and i think all are in agreement it was a great deal. Whilst our history has dictated otherwise on 1st rd T Ends, had we not got him, the NYG were ready to draft him and trade shockey to NO for a second rounder. At 36 he would have been gone. Blocking can be trained, that freakish atheleticism cant."

Mangini is trying to Fine Tune his system, major difference, you can stockpile your draft with gargbage players as well, & last time i checked i think we did get about 7players this draft, an DE,TE,CB,QB,WR,OL,DT(Jenkins). 07 draft we shouldve stockpile, was more talent in that class."

Neither Clemens nor Pennington were given a fair chance last year with that line, but those Bills interceptions were Sooo bad from Chad. I want to see Clemens come out with what should be a good running game and a receiver that won't drop the ball. "

Please do something for Freeman McNeil so the younger JET fans can see what a great back he was. #24 should be retred before 80 or 28!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I do not know why they put him with the likes of Kiper, but after seeing highlights and the combine, Gholston looks like the real deal - a happy gentlemen on camera, but a ripped monster on the field. As for the TE, I see flashes of Plaxico Burress in his size and his hands are priceless. I just pray the schemes use them well"

He was fun to watch and a workhorse of a player who helped make this team successful back in the day. I'm not so sure about Mawae though. In my opinion...a player needs to end their career with the team...and end it favorably to earn having his number retired."
