File Under: Wesley Walker, Flight Crew, Jets Night at Shea, Randy Beverly, Emerson Boozer, Howard Johnson, Jay Horwitz
04/28 — It was Rainout Theater tonight at Shea Stadium, and fans of the Green & White know that means a doubleheader was washed out: the Mets' game with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the "Jets Night at Shea" ceremonies that were to commemorate the Jets' 20 seasons of playing at the Flushing ballpark in its last year of life.

But I still trekked out from my Jersey shore palace because there was work to be done and people to talk to. Specifically, when I arrived and went to the Jets' old Shea locker room — yes, the room is still there, although it's used mostly for Mets overflow pregame news conferences now — there were some great names from the Jets past who had already shown up in case the festivities could get under way.
Fullback Emerson Boozer and cornerback Randy Beverly were both in attendance from the Super Bowl III-era Jets and wideout Wesley Walker represented the Jets of the early Eighties who nearly made a return trip to the Big Dance after the '82 season.
Also on hand just in case were five members of the Jets Flight Crew — Ryann, Gina G., Gina C., Courtney and Laura — plus one very important artifact that was earned in part from the blood and sweat of those Shea-hey days of the late Sixties: the Super Bowl III trophy.
A few Mets luminaries and media members stopped by as well. Howard Johnson, now a Mets coach and once an Amazin's slugger, reminisced with Walker, with whom he once taped a TV commercial. Jay Horwitz, my good friend who is the Mets' longtime public relations director, came in to schmooze with Boozer. Also in the house were Kevin Burkhardt, who's moved from WFAN show host and Jets beat reporter to the fast track as SNY's roving reporter, and the FAN's Ed Coleman, who also worked the Jets beat for the radio station in the past.
I'm going to file a Radar entry Tuesday morning on my reminiscences with Boozer, Beverly and Walker, but I wanted to let everyone know that although this "Jets Night at Shea" was rained out, the two old stadium mates are getting together to plan another night to reminisce among themselves and with the fans.
Back to the Draft
My apologies to any of you who sent comments to the Radar during the afternoon and evening. Because of the Shea situation, I wasn't able to clear the decks until about 8:45 p.m. Your comments are up now and I thank you for your patience. Also thanks to everyone who checked in with us during the draft. Your thoughts and opinions certainly provided plenty of food for thought.
Just to make sure you're aware, this year the Jets' rookie minicamp is not two weekends after the draft but one. All draft choices and undrafted free agent signees and tryout invites will be reporting to Weeb Ewbank Hall on Thursday and working out Friday through Sunday. There will be media availability Friday and Saturday, so be sure to check your favorite media outlet this weekend on the Jets' Class of '08. And hopefully, one of your favorite outlets is newyorkjets.com.
And just to remind you of team policy, we can't confirm or deny any reports of signings of those undrafted free agents, even though those reports began filtering out late Sunday night and will continue all this week. We will provide the list of FAs when it's made official later this week and Eric Allen and I will be talking to the new guys all this weekend.

They should have cancelled the game earlier instead of 6pm. Alot of people wasted their time (including myself) trekking out to Shea. Well anyway looking forward to the reschedule."

Tue, April 29, 2008 - 8:21am EDT"Randy, question about Bryan Thomas...say Vernon comes in and blows the doors off the place and takes Thomas' spot despite Thomas looking decent. Does he have the skill set or tools to compete for the other the inside LB spot next to Harris? I know it's not likely but one can hope."
Randy Lange Said:
"Jeremy, that's a coaching question that I don't know the answer to. We all know Eric Mangini loves versatility in his players, but that's something he'll address in the coming days, weeks and months."
Frank Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:15am EDT"O'Brien to Walker was one of the best deep field combo's during the 80's and something we haven't had for a long time. If the O-Line lives up to it's hype this year and with our new weapons Clemens will be throwing missles all over the place. We really now have 4 guys who can get deep and unlike Chad Clemens brings the quick strike ability to the table. This year is going to be a big test for...."
Frank Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:20am EDT"...Mangini. The past few years he has forced a system on his players. If he has really matured as a coach he now must find a way for maximizing his players abilities in the system. With Clemens and now Keller, Henry and Ainge these guys are geared towards a spread O not a dink and dunk game that is Chad. Mangini better not try to re-invent Keller or Henry their game is downfield. I am concerned..."
Frank Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:25am EDT"...Why you ask? Because with the Faneca, Woody, Franks and Richardson signings he is gearing up for smash mouth football. These signing and the draft really don't mesh. Mangini and his staff which now includes Callaghan must develop a hybrid system to make all these parts work. This is a huge year for Tangini there must be significant improvement there will be no excuses."

Randy Lange Said:
"Carlito7, I can't help you on any undrafted free agency stuff yet. I talked with Justin Miller in March and here is the link to the news story I wrote then: http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/articles/show/2092-justin-miller-s-still-around-on-the-corner"

Tue, April 29, 2008 - 11:11am EDT"So that's it? No other attempt for the Jets night at Shea? Doesn't that sum this franchise up! Wanna have a real Jets Shea celebration? How about one preseason game played at Shea? I am sure the brass would convince us the logistics and contractual committments are just too much to overcome which would be their way of saying they don't want to lose a single penny or put forth the effort. "
Randy Lange Said:
"Where did it say no other attempt for Jets Night at Shea, nyjetsfan14? The Jets and Mets are firming up another night for the celebration, and as soon as we have it, we'll let you know."

Tue, April 29, 2008 - 1:10pm EDT"They should play a preseason game there but the Mets would never let them because they would be afraid of the field getting torn up. Too bad miss those old Shea days."

Tue, April 29, 2008 - 4:41pm EDT"I went to all the Mich. St. home games last year. Jehuu Caulcrick is great short yardage running back with good speed. It takes two to three players to tackle him. He is 6' 255 lbs of pure muscle. He has already graduated and has great character. I can't beleive he was not drafted. This is an incredible pick up. The Jets have themselves one hell of a football player. "
CEDRIC Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 8:21pm EDT"Frank, your right in everything u said aboiut the offensive system, its more about Shotty, 2 TE SET or putting keller in the SLOT, i guess the run will spark deep playaction, less OUT ROUTE's, attack the middle with the TEs especially on 2min drives, ball control clock killing 1st down drives. These guys better be working hard to mesh this all together..."
CEDRIC Said:
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 8:28pm EDT"I wanna see this Defense, he finally has players that fit the scheme, We lost so many games in the trenches, It wasnt just about pressure, we couldnt stop the run, these guys have got to be better at stuff the run an applying the pressure then last year."

Randy Lange Said:
"Yes, Louis, the Jets and Mets are rescheduling Jets Night at Shea for later in May but that date is not finalized yet. We'll keep you posted."
Row Said:
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 3:42pm EDT"Cedric, you are just plain wrong. There were five or six games we didn't even score an offensive touchdown. This is football, we needed a playmaker. I didn't want Mcfadden, but I sure didn't want a 5th string receiver that won't make the team. Couldn't even pick a decent cover corner, that's where our D was weak. We had Dyson blowing coverage right and left. We got our NT!"
