File Under: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Darren McFadden, Arkansas, Damien Woody, Nate Garner, Round 7, Felix Jones

04/27 — The Jets didn't get to draft Arkansas back Darren McFadden in this draft — Run DMC was snapped up by the Raiders two picks before the Jets at No. 6 in Round 1. And they didn't care to maneuver up to 22, which is where Dallas and Arkansan owner Jerry Jones took McFadden's Razorback running mate, Felix Jones.

But in Round 7, the Green & White did the best thing they could in bringing some of that SEC lightning to their offense by drafting Nate Garner, the Hogs' right tackle and thus one of the big guys who got in the way of the other team's big guys so that McFadden and Jones could work their ground magic.

Garner, who checks in at 6'6" and 325 pounds, was the Jets' seventh-round pick, No. 211 overall, in today's draft day wrapup. In fact, he was the only Arkansas O-lineman drafted in the past two days.

The bespectacled Garner has kept his nose to the grindstone, building his size and strength while playing behind Zac Tubbs and Tony Ugoh, Indianapolis' second-round pick a year ago. Perhaps it's no surprise that he has been officially named a Hard Working Hog — an honor that went to him as a top academic players at Arkansas for the 2005-06 school year.

Garner's hard work was rewarded as he became the RT starter for the Razorbacks' dynamite backs. Now he gets to start over again in the NFL. As we all know, life as a seventh-round NFL draft pick is no bowl of strawberries. But perhaps Garner's selection will bear fruit as he attempts to carve out a spot on the Jets behind LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson and new RT Damien Woody.

And unless Mike Tannenbaum, Eric Mangini and the Jets' draft team decide to swap some picks from next year's draft for the right to take a few more players in this seventh round, their 2008 draft efforts are over.

"This guy could be a real diamond in the rough for us. He flew under the radar until his senior year and because he was pretty anonymous before, no one knew about him. I bet the jets took a liking to him after watching so much film on McFadden. I wonder if Garner just jumped out at them while they were preparing for the draft."
