04/27 — The Jets didn't get to draft Arkansas back Darren McFadden in this draft — Run DMC was snapped up by the Raiders two picks before the Jets at No. 6 in Round 1. And they didn't care to maneuver up to 22, which is where Dallas and Arkansan owner Jerry Jones took McFadden's Razorback running mate, Felix Jones.
But in Round 7, the Green & White did the best thing they could in bringing some of that SEC lightning to their offense by drafting Nate Garner, the Hogs' right tackle and thus one of the big guys who got in the way of the other team's big guys so that McFadden and Jones could work their ground magic.
Garner, who checks in at 6'6" and 325 pounds, was the Jets' seventh-round pick, No. 211 overall, in today's draft day wrapup. In fact, he was the only Arkansas O-lineman drafted in the past two days.
The bespectacled Garner has kept his nose to the grindstone, building his size and strength while playing behind Zac Tubbs and Tony Ugoh, Indianapolis' second-round pick a year ago. Perhaps it's no surprise that he has been officially named a Hard Working Hog — an honor that went to him as a top academic players at Arkansas for the 2005-06 school year.
Garner's hard work was rewarded as he became the RT starter for the Razorbacks' dynamite backs. Now he gets to start over again in the NFL. As we all know, life as a seventh-round NFL draft pick is no bowl of strawberries. But perhaps Garner's selection will bear fruit as he attempts to carve out a spot on the Jets behind LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson and new RT Damien Woody.
And unless Mike Tannenbaum, Eric Mangini and the Jets' draft team decide to swap some picks from next year's draft for the right to take a few more players in this seventh round, their 2008 draft efforts are over.

We had a good draft, not great, but very respectable, especially with the Ainge pick up, and they probably wanna develop henry like a long term project. Good Job. Go Jets!!!"
Frank Said:
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 5:53pm ET"Ainge, Henry and Garner are all good picks and took care of house keeping all have the potential to be contributers. I am puzzled by the Lowery pick especially at 4. He has alot of issues and seems to be a project at FS the only thing I see going for him his is size. I have a feeling this guy is going to be our Schlegel pick for this draft."
Rick Said:
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 5:54pm ET"We should have gotten Boyd. I think he would be a perfect fit for our RB depth. Hes big, and fast, and an excellent reciever out of the backfield. Plus hes a hometown Jersey boy. "
Drew Said:
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 6:31pm ET"As expected I really like what the Jets did here. I do not think they should have chased a RB since they do not need one. They got the best OLB and the best TE. The TE will make plays and created havoc on defenses trying to cover him. The CB will be a solid player, as will Henry....and as I stated last month I think Ainge will be the steal of the draft. Pennington will more velocity. Big Leader!!"
CEDRIC Said:
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 6:49pm ET"Anybody who post saying "we shouldve gotten..." you sound like everyother wannabee fan on other teams. Everyteam shouldve picked somebody else, so what the point of Posting, lets see what the guys that WE have are going to do for the Franchise. We just spoke to a RB Danny Woodhead from Chadron State about to be a Rookie Free Agent, thats funny, we just made his day lol."
Frank Said:
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 6:54pm ET"I like Henry he might be the best pick of day 2. He is the big target we needed and he gets downfield big YPC average. You look at Keller and Henry and the strength of their game it's downfield that leads me to believe that Clemens is going to be the man otherwise these picks are a waste. I think Tangini is listening reading the picks including Ainge I think they will work a spread O this year."
Jason Said:
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 7:05pm ET"I believe that the Jets made some very smart moves out their in the draft. I think they took it nice and easy, trying to construct and build up the team, more then diving after those first pick weapons. I think they have a good 08 season ahead of them, and i think that if they sign Danny Woodhead it would be a nice choice to see what he can do."
Ira Said:
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 7:12pm ET"Randy, Very good day #2. Love the Ainge, Lowery and Henry picks. Garner is a big boy and lets hope he can at least make the team. There is some good talent now with undrafted players and i know the Jets are all over it already. No one really knows how this draft will pan out but i really like how they took care of all their needs. Drew agree they are set at RB but will sign a few UFA RB's anyway."

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 7:59pm ET"I like the draft, the TE picked irks me a bit, with Top Wr like Sweed, Thomas, Kelly, the could have really helped themselves, I also wanted Justin King from PSU at cornerback, the rams picked him right before we traded the 4th rounder with GB. I think we take too many projects, go for the talent and go from there. "
Bernard Said:
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 8:19pm ET"I like all the picks but there are some free agents the Jets should consider: WR Ernest Wheelwright 6'4" 215lbs with 4.5 speed- Minnesota CS Jonathan Zenon 5'11" 191lbs, 4.4 speed - LSU OG Drew Radovich 6'4 301 UCS OT Tyler Polumbus 6'7" 312 Colorado and definitely DE Darrell Robertson 6'3" 255lbs 4.7 speed -GT "

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 8:30pm ET"I think you're wrong about this one Frank.Bill Callahan is here to help us out with the WC offense(maybe just o-line) and we're not going to be going downfield a lot.Henry is there to jump high and get the ball and Keller is a match up nightmare.Unless Clemens can show some better accuracy and get a little smarter back there,he'll lose in the summer.Ainge is the perfect type of QB for us."
Pete Said:
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 8:52pm ET"I have been a miserable Jet fan that has been highly critical of Tangini and their beloved 3-4. Let me on go record saying I am very pleased with the draft. Our 1st 2 picks make us better on 3rd down immediately. Gholston can rush as OLB in 3-4 or as DE in nickel and dime packages. Keller was best pick with our QB situation and will be on field with Baker as big target crossing middle against S/LB"
Pete Said:
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 8:56pm ET"Even though we needed a WR, Keller gives most big play ability by exploiting teams underneath and creating match up problems. We don't have a hall of fame QB or a good enough line (proven as of yet) to throw 20 yard out patterns all day long. Keller will line up in the slot or as an H-back with Baker on line. Either QB will have 2 short threats to hit if teams blitz or blocking breaks down. "
Dave Said:
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 9:13pm ET"It looks like Danny Woodhead has signed on as an undrafted free agent. He is the NCAA all-time leading rusher with just under 8,000 career yards out of a small Division II school in Nebraska. Considered under sized @ 5'7" & 203 lbs. Ran a 4.33-4.38 forty, benched 225 twenty times, and had a vert of 38.5". Callahan missed this talent at Nebraska, but he may be making up for it here! "

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 10:23pm ET"This was a very good draft year for the Jets. I hope that Chad Pennington actually has a chance to play this year with the new O line. I see our defense being #2 or 3 this year. Well rounded draft by far. I was a little upset that we did not jump for a decent running back to help compliment Jones and Washington"

Mon, April 28, 2008 - 1:17am ET"Y didnt the Jets pull the trigger on Caleb Campbell? A Verstile player with tremedous charater and upside... wat Mangini could have done with a guy like this.... But overall an excellent draft Gholston and Keller r awesome while Lowery and Ainge could step in a couple of years to produce quality years for the Jets"

He's still learning so he's gonna make mistakes but as long as he learns from it we should be fine."

I bet the jets took a liking to him after watching so much film on McFadden. I wonder if Garner just jumped out at them while they were preparing for the draft."

It's easy to root for guys like this and very hard to root for guys like Shockey ,johnson and pacman types ,even though Shockey and Johnson don't get in trouble with the law they are selfish "me first"players and if Baker doesn't get back to work he'll be on that list."
