04/27 — Joey Clinkscales, the Jets' director of college scouting, came down to the media room and spent a little quality time with the team's beat reporters a short while ago. And Joey had some solid observations on the team's first three selections of the draft.

On Dwight Lowery, the San Jose State CB/S who was selected in Round 4 just before he came down from the second floor draft room, Clinkscales said the Jets like Lowery's versatility, and the draft people especially like his ball skills, which he used to come up with 26 college interceptions —13 at Cabrillo College and 13 at SJSU.

"We're predicting Dwight will be able to do it at this level. His history says he'll be able to intercept the ball," Clinkscales said. "His instincts have carried him a long way."

(Lowery cleared up questions about four different listed heights for him in various draft outlets, saying he's 5'11½" and about 200 pounds.)

Asked about late-first-round TE Dustin Keller, Clinkscales said: "He's a very athletic kind of guy. He kind of pops off the screen with the plays he can make. And he has run-after-catch ability. He's probably smaller than some tight ends in the league. ... We're happy to have the player."

And there were those observations, made most recently by ESPN's Trey Wingo in his morning interview of GM Mike Tannenbaum, that "some people say" Vernon Gholston in his college career sometimes took "not plays but whole games off." But Clinkscales is not one of those some.

"The things I've seen, I didn't see Vernon take entire games off," he said. "We researched the kid and his background. We were comfortable making him the sixth selection."

Erik Boland, the Newsday beatwriter replacing Tom Rock, who's covering the Giants for the Long Island paper, asked Clinkscales innocently what the Jets plan to do the rest of the day.

"If I told you that ... I couldn't let you out of this room," Clinkscales said with a laugh. But he felt confident that the Jets' Day Two draft magic can continue this year.

"If we stick with the process like we have in the past when we've had late success, we should get good players," he said. But would Lowery benefit from the Jets' recent Round 4 success, even though teams restacked their boards this morning not after Round 3 as in the past but after Round 2?

"It's a round earlier this year," Clinkscales agreed. "But the premise is still the same."

Rounds 5 (from Green Bay), 6 and 7 are ahead.
