File Under: LaDainian Tomlinson, Dewayne Robertson, Alan Faneca, Kris Jenkins, Denver Broncos
04/25 — The smart money was on Dewayne Robertson being an ex-Jet before the start of the 2008 season.
Both head coach Eric Mangini and GM Mike Tannenbaum said recently that D-Rob was still on the team and could be on the Jets' opening-day roster. But one suspected that with the arrival of DT Kris Jenkins in trade from Carolina and the mature presences of Shaun Ellis and Kenyon Coleman, it was a matter of time before Robertson, the fourth pick of the 2003 draft as a junior-eligible out of Kentucky, would be trading in his green and white.
Say what you want about Robertson — and many fans and some talking heads were not fans. But I know many on the Jets who thought highly of No. 63's presence in the middle of the D-line.
And apparently they weren't the only NFL personnel people who felt that way, since Robertson had been linked in trade rumors, for whatever return, with Cincinnati, Philadelphia and finally with Denver, which sent the Jets an undisclosed draft choice that Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said is a conditional 2009 pick.
Robertson's impact wasn't in gaudy numbers but in the jolt he often gave centers and guards, in the blocking schemes he disrupted.
He had several games that stand out for me. He showed up in the 2004 AFC Wild Card Game at San Diego with six tackles, including two behind the line of LaDainian Tomlinson, plus he drew a holding penalty. In the 2005 home game against Tampa Bay he totaled a career-high nine solo tackles that included two sacks and a tackle for loss.
And last year vs. Pittsburgh, he may have been his most visible with 2.5 sacks of Big Ben Roethlisberger and a tackle of Willie Parker behind the line.
Robertson could be prickly with reporters, no doubt because he had grown tired of hearing questions about struggling to perform at fourth-pick-of-the-draft levels, but he could also be engaging and introspective, as he was when I talked with him last August about the difficulties of life as a two-gapping 3-4 nose.
"I don't get into what people expect, as long as I'm doing my job and what's expected of me," he said. "Nose is not that difficult — keep the guy off the linebacker. It's [tough] sometimes when you've got the guard crashing down on you, you get wham-blocked and all that. But it's a great position. I love it. I've learned a lot from playing it."
He also stressed how his priorities — his weight and conditioning — had changed over the years.
"I'm glad I came into camp in shape," he said. "That's big, because as a younger player I used to come in and try to get in shape during camp. But you know, as I got older, the last two years, I came to camp pretty much in pretty good shape."
However Robertson's Jets career is evaluated, he never complained, played hard, had a yellow-flag surplus in his two seasons under Mangini (no penalties committed, six forced), unofficially played in close to 80 percent of the defensive snaps in 2006-07, and missed only three games in five years. As with the trade of Jonathan Vilma to New Orleans, this swap should be good for all three sides — the Jets, the Broncs and D-Rob.
Robertson may be 2,000 miles away now, but Jets fans will still hear about how he's faring in his new orange, navy and white uni at least once. The Broncos come to the Meadowlands on Nov. 30, and depending on where he lines up, he could be going up against new Jets LG Alan Faneca.
Here are some regular-season numbers on Robertson's Jets career (TFLNG–Tackles for Loss/No Gain, PC–Penalties Committed, PF–Penalties Forced):
| Season | Sacks | TFLNG | PC-Yds | PF-Yds |
| 2003 | 1.5 | 6.5 | 2-14 | 2-15 |
| 2004 | 3.0 | 7.0 | 3-17 | 2-27 |
| 2005 | 3.5 | 6.5 | 3-15 | 6-45 |
| 2006 | 2.5 | 5.5 | 0-0 | 3-20 |
| 2007 | 4.0 | 4.5 | 0-0 | 3-25 |
| Totals | 14.5 | 30.0 | 8-46 | 16-132 |

Fri, April 25, 2008 - 4:46pm EDT"Randy, Glad to see that you gave D-Rob his due. He is a great guy and never complained about playing out of postion. He will be a very good player for the Broncos. Funny how nobody mentions that Charger game. D-Rob Good Luck!"

Fri, April 25, 2008 - 5:15pm EDT"D-Rob was a good football player, 3-4 or 4-3 it don't matter, he didn't seem to hurt Harris ,only Vilma. D-Rob was functional not fantastic, unfortunatly when you get drafted that early in RD #1 the masses expect fantastic. He will do better not having to 2-gap. Losing these quality players is tough because we are constantly changing coaches and philosophy. Sign Mangini to a 5 yr. extension now !"

Fri, April 25, 2008 - 6:00pm EDT"This is a win- win- win for all three parties involved. D-Rob gets a new team, Broncs get a first rounder with insurance if he can't play they don't give up much and the Jets get compensation for a player they were going to cut. I hope he plays the entire year and we get a 2nd round pick. Nice deal Tangini!!!"

Randy Lange Said:
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 8:25pm EDT"Derick, I don't know what conditions D-Rob would have to meet or not meet to determine the round of the pick the Broncos would send to the Jets."

Randy Lange Said:
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 9:13am EDT"Tom, the 10 picks sound correct. I can't confirm what the conditions are on the Robertson and Vilma picks because I really don't know."

Fri, April 25, 2008 - 10:45pm EDT"Randy, thanks for reminding us about the bombastic stupidity and incompetence of this regime that inherited highly talented, drafted and paid D-Rob and Vilma and forced a system completely inappropriate to their skills. Huge investment in picks, time and money turned into virtually nothing. Wrecking a very strong foundation was gross mismanagement."

"
MikeMc Said:
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 9:46am EDT"Joe WillieI agree with your comment, this is why we need stability with our mgmt. every new coach wants to run his style of O&D. This means slowly cleaning house which sets the franchise back yrs. Mangini has proved he can run a team , manage the game and clock, unlike Herm, and deal with the N.Y.pressure. Lets lock this guy up longterm and let him build his vision, we are already 1/3 there, MR T 2"
MikeMc Said:
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 9:56am EDT"Tom Spicer I know some of us have had some fun at your expense, but today have a great time and if you get your guy party like its the end of the world. If you don't get your guy party like its the end of the world trusting Tangini ,and Ira, know whats best for the longterm. I really believe in Tannenbaum and Mangini and you should too. Sometimes watching paint dry is a nice afternoon, if we win."
Pete Said:
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 10:07am EDT"Joe Willie, I'm with you, but it's time to let it all go, its' draft day. I hated the way he forced the 3-4 with the wrong personnel and will never get over the Vilma trade, but we have a new team now. Trade down and get 3 picks in first two rounds. Can't give up picks, we have a team to build. Still have holes and don't want to overpay any more hopefulls. "

Peter Said:
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 10:14am EDT"I want us to try to trade down and aquire another early second round pick. Instead of going for top guy, try to get one each from the following three groups. WR (Malcolm Kelly, Limas Sweed, James Hardy), DE/LB (Philip Merling, Derrick Harvey, Keith Rivers, Quentin Groves, Dan Connor), and CB (McKelvin, Jenkins, Rodgers-Comartie, Antoine Cason). I've changed my mind and can't wait anymore! "
Drew Said:
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 10:42am EDT"D-Rob did get caught up in a system change and always play hard but lets be honest here. We gave up 2 #1's for him thinking he would dominate for our D for years and he never lived up to that. Even before the coaching change he had 1 nice year the rest were inconsistent. The real hero here was Mr T getting anything for a guy who cannot pass a physical. Hope he plays well and gets us alot in return"
evan Kass Said:
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 11:02am EDT"for all that cant stop harping on switching to the 3-4, I would remind you that we made the playoffs in our first year with that system-- and our defense was very stout the 2nd half. Last year, who really knows what happened, I think you need to blame it on the players. Coaches were the same, system was the same, players were the same as in 2006- coaches can only do so much."
Frank Said:
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 11:21am EDT"Joe Willie and Pete...Amen. I disagree on one thing. We are so close to Long and Gohlston we need to bag one of those guys both are dynamic playmakers sorely missing in our defense. Without a pass rusher it's more of the same with new parts. I am not convinced yet about Tangini you can't buy championships. You need to be able to get the most out of each player something Mangini has done a poor job"
Ira Said:
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 11:27am EDT"Frank, If the Raiders don't take McFadden he will be a Jet. After all these months debating it i just can't see them passing him up because there will be nobody who would want to trade up to get him. Sat, April 26, 2008 - 12:30pm EDT"Frank...You like Cromartie over Mckelvin?? Special teams aside I think Mckelvin is the better player. ....Are you worried that Cromartie has only 1 kidney? If we have to choose a CB at six it will be a real letdown....With C Long going to the Rams at 2 it looks like Dorsey will fall. Seeing Ryan and Dorsey at 5 means we will get some calls to get out."
Ira Said:
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 1:42pm EDT"With all the reports in it looks like Dorsey, Gholston and McKelvin will all be available at 5. If Herm takes Gholston and i think he will the Jets will either trade with the Saints or take McKelvin at 6."

Some fans say Dewayne Robertson wasn't any good. That is not true. Like I said, it wasn't that Dewayne Robertson wasn't any good, he just wasn't the right fit for Mangini's Defense. I say good luck Dewayne Robertson. And I wish you MUCH success in Denver. "
