File Under: Jake Long, Jared Allen, Darren McFadden, Matt Ryan, Chris Vernon Gholston, draft day party
04/23 — If you’ve been to our homepage recently, you’ve noticed our Coors Light Draft 2008 Countdown. We’re technically still three days out but as the seconds tick down, I’m thinking maybe we should just remove the word “Countdown” because the draft has already started.
And if you’re a Jets fan, you have to be pumped because only four teams are scheduled to select in front of the Green & White on Saturday. The Dolphins, who owned the No. 1 pick, signed Michigan T Jake Long Tuesday to a reported five-year deal worth $57.75 million, which includes $30 million in guaranteed money.
Then Tuesday evening, the Kansas City Chiefs traded DE Jared Allen to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2008 first-round selection (No. 17 overall) and two third-round selections (Nos. 73 and 82). Kansas City, which at No. 5 currently sits one spot ahead of the Green & White, has six selections among the draft’s first 100 picks.
And how do these two moves affect the Jets? Obviously J.Long has been removed from their big board and the Chiefs’ outlook could change.
Many pundits had previously suggested that KC, a team in need of tackle help on the O-line, might seriously consider Virginia’s Branden Albert or Boise State’s Ryan Clady with that fifth pick.
But you have to think that’s highly unlikely now, considering the Chiefs just moved a pass rusher in Allen, who takes his league-leading 15.5 sacks to the Vikes, and added that 17th overall selection. They could go defense early and address the O-line later because they’ll have the ability to package picks and move up again or perhaps even grab Albert or Clady when they select again at 17.
In fact, I’d be shocked if the Chiefs went with an offensive lineman at No. 5. And if they don’t love who’s sitting there at five, could they look to move down and add even more picks?
With anticipation building heading into the weekend, I want to know what you’re predictions for what will happen from 2-6. (Feel free to include trades but let’s keep this realistic.) Here are a couple of my observations ...
1. Miami — Jake Long, T, Michigan:
The Parcells era begins with the big LT. He’ll make his NFL debut vs. the Jets down in South Florida on Sept. 7. "Jake was our guy from the beginning,'' said Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland. "I don't make it a habit of telling you what is on our board, but Jake Long was on the top of our board for a long time."
2. St. Louis
Unless the Rams are sending tremendous smokescreens, they’re likely to decide between Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU and Chris Long, DE/OLB, Virginia. While the Saints are said to be interested in both Dorsey and Sedrick Ellis, DT, Southern Cal, they’d have to blow the Rams away to move up to that coveted second slot. “It'd be hard to replace what we'd be able to draft by moving back, even if you could fulfill some needs on your team with extra picks,” said Rams head coach Scott Linehan. We’d be surprised if Dorsey isn’t the guy.
3. Atlanta
Is this a one-horse race? Do the Falcons have their eyes set on Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College? They need a quarterback but there are other options if Ryan isn’t their guy. The outfit formerly known as the Dirty Birds also owns the 34th, 37th and 48th selections and either Chad Henne, QB, Michigan, Joe Flacco, QB, Delaware or Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville could be viewed as a better fit. We know ATL will draft a passer, we just don’t know when. Thomas Dimitroff, in his first year as Falcons GM, knows he has plenty of holes to fill and may want to see what he can get here.
Interestingly, the Atlanta Journal Constitution has a poll on its Website about which player the Falcons should select. The results were surprising with 1,631 voters favoring Dorsey, 398 liking Ryan and 283 casting votes for Chris Long. We don’t think Dorsey’s around here, so look for the Falcons to move if they can. Real Football, who provides expert analysis for newyorkjets.com, reported today that the Ravens, Chiefs and Bears are all interested in moving up.
4. Oakland
Most pundits think the Raiders will select amongst the following trio: Vernon Gholston, DE/OLB, Ohio State, Chris Long, DE/OLB, Virginia and Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas. Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin said “running back is really not a need for us” but McFadden might be the best athlete in the draft and Run DMC figures to tempt Al Davis. If they go defense, Gholston is a gifted athlete and Long has all the qualities you could want in a player. Your guess is as good as mine on the Silver & Black.
5. Kansas City
As discussed above, the Chiefs have increased their weekend flexibility but had to unload a defensive star in the process. If Ryan’s on the board here, they’d have to take a long look at the BC product. Does Allen’s departure mean the 4-3 Chiefs would like Gholston or Long in their system?
6. New York Jets
If the second and third overall selections are indeed Dorsey and Ryan, then at least one part of the Gholston–Long–McFadden trifecta will be available here. Gholston and Long would be good fits at OLB in the 3-4 and McFadden has game-changing ability. The Jets, who have assembled a terrific personnel staff, always could trade down and stockpile picks. And remember they traded up twice last spring in order to get both CB Darrelle Revis and LB David Harris.
I can’t speak for you guys, but I’m ready to go to the Jets Draft Day Party Saturday, grab a cold beverage and watch this thing unfold.

If Gholston or Long are not taken by the 6th the we have to take them, if they are not then i believe we should trade down for depth. The Jets have a great duo with Washington and Jones, so there is no need to draft McFadden."

If DMC is there then he is the pick in my opinion. I don't think Long or Gholston will be available at #6. All that being said I agree that we trade down and stockpile some picks. All this talk about Ryan and DMAC is from those who don't remember the last time the Jets drafted a RB with their first pick. He too was suppose to be the real deal. Can anyone say Blair Thom.. No never mind. We need pass rushers PEOPLE. The CB then OL The WR in that order."

Mike C Said:
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 10:00am EST"1st- I want C. Long! 2nd- Tangini does not want DMC. Its a smokescreen so that NE doesn't leapfrog for either C Long or Gholston. I think they are hoping for one of them, maybe even willing to move up for 'em. If they are not available they should trade out of 6 and go CB or ILB. Use the extra pick to get a WR in 2nd or package to get back in to end of 1st for Deshaun from Cal for slot. "
Frank Said:
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 10:14am EST"We must do what it takes to land Gohlston no if's and's or but's about it. He is going to be a huge star in the league I am absolutely convinced of it. He dominated Jake Long this season in their game had 1 of the 2 sacks Long gave up in his college career. His roomate in college speaks very highly of his work ethic and game time demeanor. He fills our number 1 need and will solidify our defense."
Frank Said:
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 10:34am EST"I knew this was going to happen with Baker I called this months ago when Tangini got manhandled by Coles. He is one of the few Jets who actually improved last year and has steadily improved over the last few years. I said at the time Rhodes and Baker needed to be taken care of not Coles and now they are playing hardball with him. This is the Tangini stupidity I can't stand. "
Tom Spicer Said:
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 10:36am EST"If Gholston, Long & McFadden are gone when we pick I would like the Jets to take Ryan & let him fight Kellen for the job trade Chad & Robertson for whatever picks we can get & take a corner in the 2nd round we can get a top 4 projected corner coming out in the 2nd round there are only 3 corners projected to go in the 1st round & we will have 2 young QB'S with good arms & major upside "
Ray Said:
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 2:14pm EST"There is no way we draft Ryan then trade Chad. Then we have Clemens as the most experienced QB on the team? No way that happens. Ryan is a pick for future years and we don't have that luxury. McFadden is somewhat of a luxury pick too. But at least he contributes this year. They should seriously look at trading down."
smart fan Said:
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 3:06pm EST"If they don't take an available Matt Ryan, then they blew the draft. They need a leader and a quarterback who wins games, Ryan is both. He will be a franchise quarterback. The O line is fine and the Jets have made so many poor draft choices on defense that I truly question their judgment. Forget Ghoulston and McFadden."
Frank Said:
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 5:38pm EST"Ray as I said earlier not my choice but they could draft Ryan trade Chad and still sign a veteran QB to put in the mix. A Frank original idea is I believe Chis Simms will be cut by the Buc's and we can go after him."

Carriker to his original position since he been playing DT all year. ATL will pick Ryan, and OAK will crave DMC and take him, leaving LONG n GHOLSTON for KC, which leaves One of Those Guys for us..Just a Thought fellas."
Mike C Said:
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 9:49pm EST"Cedric hope you are right bout Oak taking DMC. Only way we get 1 of those guys w/out trading up (which I prefer not to do). I agree w/ Ray, we can't take Ryan & trade CP. He is better than any avail FA vet. Not that having Ryan KC & CP would be a bad thing ie Brees & Rivers or D Anderson & Quinn. Let em battle it out and best man wins. Not a bad prob to have. Still want C Long over em all."
Wayne Said:
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 10:49pm EST"Games are won in the trenches. Without a great O line you can't run the ball, pass or & control the clock. Without a D line you can't stop the run & pressure the QB. Get it. Stop calling for DMac when we have TJ & LW. We need either Long or Gholston period. Bet Pats draft D. Wish we lost KC game & we'd be looking at the 4th pick & not talking about trading up which would be DUMB. Be smart Tangini."

Frank Said:
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 10:42am EST"Ray, Simms was playing well right before he got hurt. I think he is a cpable backup. If we are stuck at 6 Long and Gohlston are gone and you don't want Ryan I say pick Cromartie. He is 6'2" fast and a leaper he will match up well with R. Moss for the next 3 years. I would then try to take Q. Groves with our 2nd pick he slipped because of a heart condition that is supposedly fixed. I would then..."
Frank Said:
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 10:47am EST"...do whatever is necessary trading picks or bodies to trade back up if M. Kelly is still in the second round. I'd also consider Hardy with the 2nd pick if Groves is gone. I really like Groves he could be the pass rusher we need if we don't get Long or Gohlston. Flacco is a big project he needs alot of work he doesn't have the footwork. If we were to pick anyone I like Henne he is a proven winner."
Ray Said:
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 1:38pm EST"Yeah Frank I know Simms was having a decent year, but his body of work as a whole, including college, was very unspectacular. I'd rather see Chad mentor these guys for one more year. As for any of the other picks, I could live with any of them, except one. Henne is the LAST name I want to hear coming out of Goodells mouth when we are drafting."
Ray Said:
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 1:43pm EST"I live in OH but didn't grow up here so not an OSU diehard fan, so this isn't a buckeye vs. mich thing. I just had the opportunity to watch Henne try and figure it out for three years. He was only a winner because he was on Mich, so they won inspite of him. He makes the same stupid throws he made as a frosh. Picks in the end zone or from trying to throw across the field. Stay away from him."
Frank Said:
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 2:21pm EST"Ray I don't want to pick a QB either I was merely playing out scenerios. I really don't have a huge problem if the Jets look long and hard at Ryan if he is there at 6 and Long or Gohlston are not. The absolute last name I want to hear is McFumble. Ira Said:
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 3:50pm EST"Eric, I am hoping for Chris Long to drop to the Jets. If not then trade out and get best available {McKelvin} CB. Right now they have no starter opposite Revis. Lots of rumors about the Jets being interested in Ryan if he is there at 6. This will be a fun day for sure. GO JETS!!!!!!"
