04/11 — Mike Nugent was on the field when Red Bull New York hosted a celebrity game last Saturday, but he didn’t take part in the action. The Jets kicker left his cleats at home and put on his coaching hat, leading his team of stars to a close victory.
“We won, 3-2. We were tied, 1-1, at halftime,” Nuge said. “We played with tiny little goals, but we had a goalie. They didn’t have a goalie. Anytime one of their guys was back there, he just used his hands.”
Nugent, who makes a living with his right foot, didn’t even fire the soccer ball around in warmups. He says he will only play football on the Meadowlands FieldTurf.
“Sometimes you think that there are little things that you’d like to do and then you realize how much you love playing football,” he said. “I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize that.”
Nugent quietly retired from soccer many years ago. The Centerville, Ohio, native played mostly fullback until high school and then became a full-time American footballer.
“My last season was after seventh grade. Club soccer in Ohio is done by age and not grade and I was a little bit older than my class, so my team broke up because my teammates went to high school,” he said. “At that point, I was still at the junior high. In eighth grade I played football and just kind of kept in going from there.”
Nugent eventually kicked himself into the record book at The Ohio State University, but his younger bro didn’t follow in his footsteps. Kevin Nugent played striker for the Buckeyes’ soccer club. And as luck would have it, the Red Bull New York celebrity contest preceded their season opener against the Columbus Crew.
“I actually talked to some of the guys from the Crew and Kevin previously played for the Crew for maybe about a month as just like a practice squad guy,” Nuge said.
After Nugent’s coaching duties were complete, he was brought out to midfield for the coin toss. He may have given the Red Bull a little luck because they scored two goals in the opening eight minutes and cruised to a 2-0 victory.
“We stayed for the game,” he said. “We watched a little bit of it down on the field and then moved up to our seats, and it ended up being a really good game.”
The Red Bulls also donated a portion of each game ticket sold to the Worldwide Children's Foundation of New York and the Books for Kids Foundation. Nugent was more than happy to contribute to the cause even if his leg was at rest.
“The crowd was yelling at me when we were signing soccer balls, so I did punt one into the crowd,” he said. “But that was it as far as any activity.”

If we can get Nugent 10 more yards on K.O.'s it will really help our Special teams and Defense, hopefully Nugent has ALOT of KickOffs this year."

Fri, April 11, 2008 - 4:54pm EDT"Forget Hobson...he's too SLOW anyway. FYI-The inside word from players around the league is that the Jets are an SLOW team overall!!! Even one of their own players said last year that Victor was 'kinda slow". Now onto the draft.. If McFadden or Ryan is there for the taking.make a move and take one or the other. If both are gone, then you take Goulston and in the Second round -take QB Joe Flacco from Delaware, I love Chad but his and Coles days are numbered and I like Clemmens as a backup, but Flacco has a big accurate gun that scares people...and that's what we have always needed. I'm SICK of seeing that fade pass in the endzone to Coles. Also in the second round the Jets should take James Hardy from Indiana..a 6'5 target for Ryan or Flacco...Lets not blow another chance at a great QB, i.e. REMEMBER PASSING ON MARINO AND FARVE??? "
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 5:23pm EDT"We can also draft McFadden & go the Cowboy Jones & Barber or Jaguar Taylor & Drew route by keeping the ball out of the other teams hands & milking the clock this is a great way to make up for a lack of pass rush pound the ball between the tackles 20 times a game with Jones than 10 to 15 times hit them with McFadden & run it right over them. Our O would get that explosive playmaker that it is needs"
Ira Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 8:26pm EDT"I thought Nuge did improve his KO's. What O'Dea needs to work on with him is his accuracy from 40 yds and out. For his career he is 20-31 from 40 yds or more which is 64.5 %. 39 yds and in he is 55-60 for 91.6% He will improve his 40 yd or more kicks this year with O'Dea helping him. O'Dea has done a great job with Rackers and Gould so i would expect the same for Nuge."
Drew Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 8:30pm EDT"I happen to think our pass rush is already improved. I still want another guy but with Jenkins eating up blocks there will be more chances for Pace , Thomas and even Harris who had 5 sacks in 9 starts to get off the edge. Not only that but our run D will be much....much better. Even if we dont get 1 of the 2 stud guys there are players that can get to the QB in this draft. Lets get OLB, CB, & a WR"
Ira Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 8:39pm EDT"If the reports about the Broncos potential trade for D-Rob are true that would be great news. To get 2 picks between the 4th and 6th rd would really save the Jets some money and they get back 2 picks which they could really use. That would be nice to have three 4th rd picks and an extra 6th."
Frank Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 8:53pm EDT"Ira, Let me remind you that both B. Thomas and Hobson had better years in 2006 than Pace did last year more sacks and tackles. Why did both OLB's have such a poor year last year? I would love for you to explain that to me. The Pace signing is fool's gold 20 Million guaranteed to him is absurd especially if it means we won't go hard for Gohlston or C.Long. I really don't like this."
Frank Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 9:03pm EDT"Dunnie, I am willing to go through an entire year with Clemens to let him develop. I know it takes time to develop and he has all the tools. Several games in a lost and deteriorating season(2007) is not a good evaluation. Last year being sacked so much and playing for a lousy team did not help his development. He deserves to play behind the new guys and see if he improves and I think he wil shine."
Frank Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 9:11pm EDT"By the way for all you Chad Kool Aid drinkers. I definitely recall saying and observing that Clemens outplayed Chad during last pre-season. I also recall Clemens team winning the training camp scrimage game. So don't go jumping for glee just yet. Even though I don't agree with Tangini's declaration if this is truely and open competition Clemens has a good shot at winning."
Drew Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 10:57pm EDT"Frank...What you have yet to explain is your killing Tangini for signing Pace but we both know the man you look up to and refer to any time you can "King Pacells" tried to sign him to the same exact contract. Not less money the same contract..... I happen to totally agree with you on the KC deal. This kid should start from training camp. I respect Chad but his 15 play 8 min FG drives kill me"
Pete Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:51pm EDT"Enough complaining! It's time for the draft and it is so wide open. Can't guess about it anymore and can't wait to see how it unfolds. If nothing else it is going to be a fun season watching a very different team with some young potential. We aren't built to win a Superbowl yet so I don't see how Mangini doesn't give KC a season to develop and see what he's got in a transition year. He'll start."
Ira Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 9:22am EDT"Frank, First off Pace finally came into his own last year. They must see that he would be a big time player in their system. Don't know but i would be safe to say that he made more plays at the line or behind the line of scrimmage than anybody else who can play that postion for them. Bowens was better than Thomas last year. Why? He will bounce back."
Ira Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 9:25am EDT"I say that Hobson and more so Thomas had off years because other teams were able to p/u what the Jets were doing with them in 06 and the became too predictable. Now with Harris and Pace things should open up more for Thomas. Otherwise Bowens will just continue to take away more playing time from him."
MikeMc Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 10:34am EDT"WE need the draft in early April because the wait is making everyone nutty. Jetzmen, I'm tired of that fade also ,Bubba should help open other options up so when we do call the fade it wont be so predictable, also with improvements on the O-line maybe we can get Thomas, not Mcfadden , some 3-5 yard T.D.'s. Hey Drew, 15 play F.G.'s are good with a stout defense, keep the clock moving !"
Frank Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 11:37am EDT"Drew why don't you respond to my point oh I forgot I promised not to confuse Drew anymore so here it is a simple question. Would you rather have Pace or possibly Gohlston or C. Long? With all the money spent I doubt very seriously there is any left to go after either one of these guys. Let's see how the draft plays out like I said earlier if we land either of those guys at #6 I will be happy."
Frank Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 11:40am EDT"Ah ha Ira the Jets were too predictable so is that the players fault or the coaching staff? So how is Pace or any of these guys going to thrive if the coaching staff is too predictable? Just like Vilma former Pro Bowler and Rookie of the year with 183 tackles one year being abused and misused. You answered exactly my beef with Mangini. He better make significant changes to his coaching style..."
Frank Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 11:43am EDT"...or we will have more of the same this year. Contrary to Woody's proclamations this is a significant year for Tangini they must make a significant improvement or they will lose the confidence of the players. They can't clean house every year. Contrary to all the ravings on this site I think their personel moves have a huge question mark right now. Time will tell."
Tom Spicer Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 12:24pm EDT"Frank your #'s are wrong in 06 Thomas had 58 tackles & 9 sacks & Hobson had 66 & 6 in 07 Pace had 79 & 6 so Pace had 21 more than Thomas & 33 more than Hobson same amount of sacks as Hobson & 3 less than Thomas but Thomas & Hobson stunk last year. Pace has 20 lbs on Hobson & Hobson is slow I will not miss him he had 1 good year for us if Thomas does not start well bench him on 3rd down for Bowens "
Tom Spicer Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 12:49pm EDT"Frank disregard my last message I was reading solo tackles & not total tackles 06 Thomas 77 & 9 Hobson 100 & 6 07 Pace 97 & 6 so Pace had 20 more tackles than Thomas but 3 less sacks & 3 less tackles than Hobson & the same amount of sacks I just think Hobson is a 4-3 LB & I think Pace will do well for us in a 3-4 he is that hybrid type of guy play Thomas on running downs & Bowens on passing downs"
Dunnie Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 12:52pm EDT"Frank ... I think Pace has a shot to be real good. I agree ... I think we spent our way out of keeping the number 6 pick. I guess we will see ... one possibility is that we trade our number one and two 4s to move up a couple spots to grab Long or Gholston. Then we would be spending less because we would have fewer players to sign. While I don't think this will happen (we will trade down) it could."
Frank Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 1:01pm EDT"Tommy boy your splitting hairs are you an accountant? Sometimes I wonder if you are a robot are you real? I already have to contend with Drew now you? Look at the broader picture the point in a short space here is that 20 million is absurd for a guy who is no better than what we had. Second what we had worked but somehow got off track(coaching). Last it's Pace vs. Gohlston or Long take your pick."
Frank Said:

dean Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 1:08pm EDT"also tom to use one of your phrases your facts are wrong. curtis martin didn't run for 1200 yards 8 times with the jets. he did it 6 times. and why would you bench bthomas for bowens on 3rd downs? THEY DONT PLAY THE SAME POSITION IN THE NICKLE. thomas is a down rusher and bowens is a lb. they played at the same time last year"
dean Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 1:46pm EDT"actually tom i was in error. bthomas didnt play a lot of nickle the second half of last seaosn. they already made the switch. bt was out, bowens was in."

Sat, April 12, 2008 - 1:49pm EDT"Frank, Nobody said that Eric and the rest of the coaches didn't have their parts in a 4-12 season. Just like they made changes with the personal they will also coach different. They will get back to the way the called plays in 06 and will be aggressive right from week 1 with the D and not wait until after the bye week. I am saying right now 9-7 or better. GO JETS!!!!"
Tom Spicer Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 2:09pm EDT"Dean he did it 7 times if you count the Pats also 1 year he missed it by 40 yards & the other time he missed it by 48. The point was Braeden said Chad never had a good O Line & that is why he has only played 1 full season in his life he was trying to blame the fact that Chad can not stay healthy on our O Line & I pointed out last year was the 1st time in Chads career that we had a bad line "
Tom Spicer Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 2:15pm EDT"Dean I did not say Chad stinks I said if you ask someone who is not a Jet fan they would say he stinks & everyone that I know that is not a Jet fan says start Kellen or get a new QB & in your last post I think you said what I was going to point out Thomas got benched last year for Bowens so they do play the same spot Frank I would rather have Pace & Gholston/Long & Thomas could go if he plays bad"
dean Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 3:05pm EDT"tom, in your comment at the end of the marques murrell story, you wrote "c martin rushed for at least 1200 yards 8 times for us." dude, you were 2 off. "
Drew Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 5:26pm EDT"Frank, you keep asking Pace or Gholsten/C Long. Another silly question. Its a longshot either will not be there at 6. If they are the Jets will draft them. You think Mr T (Parcells thinks Mr T is a genuis by the way) does not know what he is doing? He understands the cap!! Why dont you send an email to Parcells with your question. He threw $$ at Pace and is trying NOT to draft C Long or Gholsten."
zartan Said:

Ira Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 9:22pm EDT"Zartan, As much as i like Barrett he couldn't holdown the starting CB job all year. Miller will have to wait and see how he comes back from the ACL injury. Woolfolk is a ? signing so you can't count on him. CB is there biggest need right now. Draft a CB who could start right away and plug him in opposite Revis for the next 5 years. Sorry CB is not a luxury pick."
CEDRIC Said:
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 10:01pm EDT"Frank, the BITTER one, if Hobson was that good, he wouldve gotten signed way earlier, so i would rather a question mark than a sure DUD. and B. Thomas will lose his spot if we get C.long or gholston. i agree about goin wit KC over Cp. FRANK,..RELAX, REEEELAAAX. At least they are trying, obviously what they did aint work before n these thing take time. u would be more upset if they did nothing."
Dunnie Said:
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 8:43am EDT"Zartan ... I wholeheartedly disagree ... CB and WR are HUGE needs for us. I think Pass Rusher/WR/CB are needed equally ... I am willing to wait till next year for QB. I do think we need to give Kellen a shot with an adequate line. Two weeks and all this talk will be over. "
Joe Wille Said:
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 11:11am EDT"What are you Chad lovers thinking? Consider the concept : a QB who CANT THROW! Want a lifeguard who cant swim but has "intangibles". A CPA who cant add but is a "leader". A pilot who cant fly but is "tough and understands the system"? I promise you, when the einsteins that run this team name Chad the starter, you will hear EXACTLY those quotes. Enjoy those dinks and floaters at 3rd and 15."
Charlie Said:
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 6:40pm EDT"I don't think CB is a need pick either. Very rarely can teams pay two shutdown corners. If Revis is going to be that, and I think he will, and they strike gold on another corner w/ the #6 pick, then one of those two probably won't be resigned after the rookie contract. We'll develop them both just too see one leave via free agency. Also, too many times these can't miss prospects do just that."
Ira Said:
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 6:58pm EDT"Eric and Randy, Good to see that SNY this week changed the back ground set by removing Vilma's and Martin's jerseys and added Jones. I actually like the throwbacks and hope they decide to use them at least once a year. Here are 2 LB's that the Jets had to have scene play while scouting Harris. S. Cable from Michigan and K. Thornhill from Michigan State. Both could be around come the 6 or 7th rds."
G.T. Said:
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 7:50pm EDT"We need Gholston bad! we have not had a threat since Abraham(if healthy) I love the additions 2 the O-line... at least Jones will have a chance."
Ira Said:
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 8:27pm EDT"First i meAnt Crable from Michigan. Charlie why not? Thats why Mr. T wanted that 6 year deal for Revis. If they draft a CB in the 1st rd they will again try to get the 6 yr deal. Even if they can't they would have Revis and lets just say McKelvin for the next 5 years. And who knows whats going to happen with 09 being the final year of the salary cap and 010 has an uncapped year. "

He is not very fluid but can make plays and has a really high motor.I would say he is a better prospect than Hobson was coming out. He wont go as high but he is a better player...... I also know you are really high on Stucky but this kid needs to play in some real games before I ge excited about anything."
Charlie Said:
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 8:48pm EDT"Ira, I can't remember the particulars of the Revis contract but I thought if we decided to keep him for the duration it got to be very expensive on the back end. Too lazy to look it up so may be mistaken but regardless, given enough time any CB is vulnerable. Similarly, a great pass rush can make even a mediocre corner look great."

I liked the guy and was disappointed Tangini let him go. Breaden I just cracked a rib laughing at your Chad prediction. I guess he'll throw 30 TD's including the ones to opposing teams."
Tom Spicer Said:
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:03pm EDT"Braeden Chad throw for 30 TD'S & play all 16 games that is funny YOU HAVE MORE OF A CHANCE OF WINNING LOTTO THAN OF THAT. You live in a dream world! At this point in his career Chad is a backup HE HAS NEVER HAD MORE THAN 22 td's. Why do you think some draft experts have us taking Ryan cause they know Chad is not the answer after 7 games the jury is not out on Kellen BUT IT IS ON CHAD & HAS BEEN "
Ira Said:
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:20pm EDT"Drew, Crable has plenty of upside and i think you're right he will be drafted before the 6th rd. Trust me on Stuckey this kid can play if he can stay healthy. Loved Ventrone they should've not let this kid go. But they did sign Elam who ended up starting so its a wash with the Jets coming away with a starter."
Ira Said:
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:27pm EDT"Charlie, Basically Revis' deal is voided because he played more than 35% of the plays last year. So with that the Jets have the option to buy back the 5th and 6th years. The 5th year would be 5 million and the 6th year anywhere from 9-15 million. Four years from now the going price for a top 5 CB would be around 10 per anyway. So i can see them reworking his deal after 2010. "
