04/09 — In his first local TV appearance as a member of the Jets, Kris Jenkins gave fans a glimpse of both his serious side and his playful persona. Jenkins had a good flow going with Steve Overmyer when he threw the SNY Jets reporter a quick jab.
“I don’t just play football for the check, I don’t play football just to get the notoriety and sit on TV with you while you’re in your cushion,” Jenkins said with a slick grin. “I play it because I love the game — I just love the game. If I had to play for free, I would play for free.”
The 6’4”, 349-pound Jenkins, a three-time Pro Bowl selection with the Carolina Panthers, was acquired by the Green & White on Feb. 29 in exchange for a pair of draft picks. He talked with Overmyer about transitioning from a 4-3 and becoming the Jets’ middle man in their 3-4 front.
“A 3-4 nose has a different type of patience than a 4-3 tackle. In a 4-3, you can just take off and go upfield. In a 3-4, you have to be a little bit more patient,” he said. “But one of the things that I’ve kind of made a name for myself on is not moving, so I think that’s going to stay pretty consistent in a 3-4 as well.”
Not at all concerned with stats, Jenkins should fit in well with Eric Mangini’s team-first attitude. Everything will start with him in ’08 and that means a lot of double teams for a player who has the ability to dominate the line of scrimmage.
“I do not think the defense is something that’s too complex for a nose tackle. You just need to win — that’s it, basically,” he said. “You have to make it easier for everyone else to do their job. That means holding up blockers or whatever you have to do to make it easier for those linebackers and those defensive backs, and that’s what I take pride in doing.”
Jets fans should take some pride in a recent comment delivered by one of Jenkins’ former NFC South adversaries. Tampa Bay head coach Jon Gruden, a less-than-conventional dude who owns one of the game’s top offensive minds, recently told reporters during a media breakfast that he was pleased to hear that Jenkins had found a new home.
"I did some celebrating driving down Dale Mabry [Highway],” Gruden said to a few scribes at the owners' meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. “I gave Eric Mangini the biggest hug I've ever given a coach and told him, 'Thank you. Good God, do we appreciate you taking that guy out of our division.'”
Now it’s the Pats, the Bills and the Dolphins who will have to gameplan for Jenkins. But the NFC keeps Kris’ little brother. Cullen Jenkins, a 6’2”, 303-pound DE for the Green Bay Packers, has racked up 15 sacks in his first four pro seasons.
"He's a little more finesse. Cullen likes to do spin moves and look pretty,” Kris said in a 2004 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article. “That's cool and whatever, but I don't have time for that. I can change up, but I'm more of a bruiser. There's about a 30-to-40-pound difference there."
The Jets are happy to have the lovable bruiser on their roster. Kris Jenkins has plenty of personality, but just don’t get in his way on Sunday.

He will be blowing up plays in the backfield with the protection Jenkins will provide. I can't wait !!"

That Man is a warrior and if he doesnt quit a play the defense shouldnt Quit either...He's right, his job is simple he's a linemen in the Trenches , we lost ALL our games in the trenches in 07. If Jenkins gives us a healthy season, we will have a much improved D-line. Can I get a J-E-T-S?!!!"

Wed, April 9, 2008 - 6:23pm EDT"Let's hope Jenkins doesn't eat his way out of the NFL. He has never played in a 3-4 so we need to keep our fingers crossed on that one as well. If the stars and the moon are aligned in the 4th quadrant at the beginning of the harvest moon maybe all the "if's" surrounding this yeam will come together to have a decent year this season as long as Clemens is the starter."
Frank Said:
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 6:28pm EDT"Drew not to confuse you but Tangini took over a team that was 4-12 not 10-6 so the major beef I have with them is they knew they were going to implement a new defense. Just like Parcells did taking over a 1-15 team they should have gotten rid of all those players then when they had value. I hate this "toe in the water" method of doing things instead of making the major changes all at once."

EASY MAN...MR T is new to the GM game just like Mangini is, its called a learning curve, give them some time. We have a right to be pumped but dont be overly optimistic guys. Congrats to the team for taking care of Rhodes, he deserved it GO JETS"

Wed, April 9, 2008 - 8:27pm EDT"Another feather in Mr T's cap for the Rhodes deal. Think of the players we have locked up for years to come......Rhodes was another 4th round gem found by the underrated Jet scouting staff.....Frank, Are you speaking of the 4-12 team that had that great defense?? I agree "again" he should have cleaned house but he DIDN"T but made the playoffs. What's confusing is why you continue bring it up?"

I will give the benefit of the doubt to Tangini but I do not like what I see. Drew are you gloating about Kelly? He ran a 4.68. I would definitely draft him in the second round. How fast is Plaxico? The guy has the best hands in the draft and he is 6"4 227. "

Wed, April 9, 2008 - 9:51pm EDT"Imagine what our defense would be like with Ellis, Jenkins, Pace and Gholston and a pair of speedy linebackers. It would be fun to see quarterbacks be frustrated going up against the Jets WALL STREET defense"
Frank Said:
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 9:54pm EDT"Drew do you ever listen to yourself. You previuosly posted that Tangini wasn't going to clean house because of a 10-6 record. I corrected you again they took over a 4-12 team and it would have made much more sense to clean house then. We are in year 3 Mangini better make a huge improvement in his coaching and win a game against a winning team which they have accomplished once since they got here."

Keeping Rhodes around for the long term is music to my ears. Still don't like how hobson rubbed dirt in the Jets face on sirius radio the other day but the Jets will get the last laugh. One final thing can't we all just get along! JETS! JETS!"
Ray Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 3:30am EDT"I can't remember who it was on here that said everyone in Carolina was laughing at us for the Jenkins trade. But if coaches are ecstatic that an opposing player is leaving, he couldn't be that bad!! Until I see otherwise, I will believe this was a good trade. Rhodes in Jet Green and not NE Blue is possibly the greatest news of the offseason!!"

Frank Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 8:05am EDT"Steve I agree with you we really need to draft Gohlston or C. Long and then I will get excited. This team is severly lacking in playmakers on both sides off the ball. Either of those guys will be a dynamic pass rusher we haven't had since jetting Abraham. On the other hand we will have a plodding unexciting offense that is going to continue to have problems scoring especially if Chad is starting."
Braeden Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 10:33am EDT"Ive heard some draft news on the radio and now Ive updated my mock draft. 1.Dolphins- Jake Long 2.Rams- Glenn Dorsey 3.Falcons- Chris Long 4.Raiders- Sedrick Ellis 5.Chiefs- Vernon Gholston 6.JETS- Darren McFadden Im back to McFadden, but I could change my mind any time, I'll be happy with either. by the way, frank, what do you expect of clemens, dude hes gonna throw every pass at theground"
Frank Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 12:30pm EDT"By the way Dunnie I am going to add to your nightmare scenerio I think there is a real likely hood that D-Rob will end up in Miami after Tangini cuts him in June but I still think the Pats are going to make a play for him as well. I am adding the Miami scenerio because their D-line was gutted and they need a tackle. Ira, there will be no trade because no one is going to pick up his salary."
Frank Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 12:36pm EDT"By the way hey Drew with all the feathers you are putting into Mr. T's cap I guess by Thanksgiving we'll find out if he is a Turkey or an Eagle!"
Ira Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 1:06pm EDT"Frank, Denver always gets desperate with DL and my hunch is they'll give up a late pick for him. As for his salary he will have to rework a new deal with another team. His agent must know that he will get more $ now than after June 1st."
Tom Spicer Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 1:14pm EDT"Some of you guys write Tangini & talk about things that Mangini has done wrong I think MR. T has done a great job as the GM & he has drafted well. I agree Mangini has made several mistakes but dont lump the 2 together MR. T I am very happy with Mangini not so much. "
Damone Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 1:26pm EDT"To answer a question that Dunnie asked...I dont think we need another safety because i think A.Elam is a real good player. Now he did do some young dumb stuff last year but everybody that watched all the games knows he everywhere out on the field, and thats one of the things you look for(players that are around the ball)..He'll prove me right."
Anonymous Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 1:26pm EDT"I've been a Jets fan since 1968, and I'd like to comment on a few things. Yes, signing Kerry to a long term deal was huge for us, the guy's a stud and we needed to lock him up for the long term. But I think we're all wondering the same thing here. Who's going to captain the ship? Chad has the mind and the heart, but not the arm. Behind this new O-line though, I think he could actually do it."
Ray Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 1:40pm EDT"Hey Eric, I just saw on ESPN that the Dolphins were discussing contract parameters for both J. Long and Gholston. Do you know if that was just an internal thing or are those talks between them and the players agents?"
Anonymous Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 2:03pm EDT"I Agree with the comment, I think Chad should Be the QB with the new OLine, I think Chad has the leadership to take us to the superbowl. The Draft is hard i dont know who i would take Mcfadden Or a Pass Rusher But what will become of the RB we have Jones (good) Washington (love him) Chapmen (ok) If we get Mcfadden which RB will Go?"
Frank Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 2:51pm EDT"Ira I really think since D-Rob has been mis-cast the last 2 years he is going to sign a short term deal anyway with the team that is going to give him his best chance to shine so he can cash in. He is still young and will get a big deal if he plays well where ever he goes this year. I really don't think he wants to go to Denver."
Drew Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 7:51pm EDT"Frank...You are now predicting that D-Rob might go to NE or maybe Miami?? Lets see.... don't they play a 3-4 also?? Let him go and not make plays in their system why would anyone care if he goes there? By the way I was not gloating about Kelly I was stating the guy we both liked ran a horrible 40 and could be had in the 2nd round. Where's your sense of humor?"
Drew Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 8:03pm EDT"Frank...Maybe Tangini was thinking they went 4-12 in 2005 under Hern because of all of the injuries...somthing you have posted several times of the last few months. You also forget how bad the salary cap was when they took over. Cutting or trading some of those guys would have been murder. Either way Tangini has had 1 good and 1 bad year. I believe this year will show huge improvement. Well see"
Drew Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 8:12pm EDT"I would love to get another pass rusher but do not believe one will be there @6. Assuming no trade is available they will take a CB. Still think we can get down on the mid teens for a team with OL needs. Frank, by saying jetting J-Abe are you saying the Jets shouldnt have traded him? I know your not that foolish. Great talent who never was available in a big game. Plus he turned into Mangold."
Pete Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 8:29pm EDT"Guys, do you really think our front seven is that good? Do you really? Whoever thinks opposing QB's will be in "fear" of our defense hasn't ever seen a really good group. We still do not have a pass rush and only one legitimate corner. I have to agree with Frank, you build through the draft. Faneca is the ONLY true player we aquired and boy are you guys excited. "
Pete Said:
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 8:33pm EDT"We aren't spending infinite money like the Yankees. We have the same salary cap as everyone else (Oh, I'm sorry, a lot less after all of our cap penalties from the moves everyone loves). We OVERSPENT on free agency. I don't see us keeping the 6th pick as I don't think we can sign him. Big salaries to decent players we HOPE can master the 3-4. We shouldn't have needed to fill 15 holes in 3rd year!"
Ray Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 2:59am EDT"Pete I think your at the other extreme. Yeah everyone is excited by all the moves. But would you have rather they did nothing? I, for one, am glad if nothing else that at least they were aggressive in addressing our needs. And funny thing, the guy we paid the most for (Faneca) was the only one you liked! Jenkins was a trade. Pace played in a 3-4. So which move should we not have made?"
Ray Said:
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 3:05am EDT"Woody? We had a horrible offensive line, there were others but Mangini has a history with him. Franks? Baker is a good receiver but not a great blocker. Richardson? Had no true blocking fullback last year. We aren't trading the 6th pick, no one will give us true value. So what if we overspent, we are still under the cap and we addressed needs. You can't fill 15 holes by the draft alone."
Row Said:
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 8:16pm EDT"Ray, as long as you don't say draft McFadden or Ryan, I will agree with you. We need to trade for Lito Sheppard or trade down for 2 second round picks so we can get Flowers and Hardy or Desean Jackson. Let's draft a player that fits a need."
C' ya Said:
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 12:01pm EDT"Passing on McFadden if he is still available would be "same old jets mentality" like picking o brein and not one of the greats who came out in that draft"

Wed, April 16, 2008 - 7:22pm EDT"I'd love to see a top DE, CB or OL with the first pick, and a WR with the second. Thomas Jones can play out his contract at a high level behind a good line - so lets improve there. The D looks good... my worry is QB!!!! "
Ray Said:
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 12:34pm EDT"Hey Row, I think if McFadden is there, the Jets will take him. Unless Gholston is still there also. I would like to see them get a WR or DB but think they can get a good one in the second round, this is a deep draft for WR's."
