File Under: Pete Carroll, John David Booty, Sedrick Ellis, Keith Rivers, pro day, Southern Cal
04/03 — It’s a leap they won’t soon forget at the University of Southern California. After a solid number with his first jump at Southern Cal's pro day Wednesday, Keith Rivers nearly jumped through the ceiling with a 42-inch vertical.
"I just dug in deep and jumped," Rivers said. "I pretended I was dunking a basketball."
Former Jets head coach Pete Carroll, who has built quite the football factory at SC, had a few of his current players on hand to watch the Trojans' prospects.
“We want them to see what it’s like and learn from the experience, so they’ll be ready when their time comes but also to add the energy to the room,” he told NFL Network. “Keith hit about 38, and then he went for that second jump and almost hit the ceiling with his head and everybody exploded for him.”
The 6’3”, 235-pound Rivers could be the first linebacker selected in the 2008 NFL Draft. Penn State 'backer Dan Connor will also likely be a first-round pick, but Rivers may have vaulted past him with an impressive showing that included a 4.51 time in the 40-yard dash.
Rivers, who received All-America and All-Pac 10 first-team honors, will most likely line up on the outside in a 4-3 at the next level and may go as high as No. 10 to the Saints.
Not to be overshadowed, though, was a slimmed-down Sedrick Ellis. After weighing 309 pounds at the Indy combine, the defensive tackle dropped 11 pounds and improved all his measurables. He chopped his 40 time from 5.25 to 5.01, jumped 30 inches and had 36 reps of 225 pounds on the bench.
“My trainer had me on chicken breast and broccoli for about three weeks, so I haven’t eaten any bread or anything like that,” he told NFL Network draft analysts Mike Mayock and Charles Davis. “I’ve just been dieting, so I can't wait to go and get some fast food.”
Ellis has the ability to become a 3-4 end but might be a little light for the nose. Most people think he’ll play the 3-technique in a 4-3 front. Last season he racked up 8.5 sacks and 12.5 stops for losses, totaled seven PDs and recovered two fumbles. He was absolutely dominant during Senior Bowl practices and may leap over LSU DT Glenn Dorsey on some draft boards.
“I’ve heard anywhere from No. 2 to No. 10. Everyone knows how the draft goes — it’s kind of unpredictable,” Ellis said. “Right now I’m not trying to project anything or get my hopes up. I’m just going to wait it out and see what happens and just be thankful for what I get.”
If Ellis moves into the top five, that could make things even more interesting for the Green & White at six. The possibilities are seemingly endless at the moment and we continue to welcome your predictions.
While QB John David Booty is not going to be a first-day pick (remember, Day One is just two rounds this year), he reportedly was sharp in throwing about 80 passes.
"Throwing is what I've done my whole life," Booty said. "There's no nervousness to me. I threw the deep balls to both sides. I also threw the speed out-routes. Those were the two things I needed to show."
Also on the offensive side, RB Chauncey Washington raised more than a few eyebrows with a sub-4.35 40. The 6’0”, 211-pound Washington, who suffered from paralysis for more than a week when he was 9 before it vanished and struggled with the books in the Land of Troy, rushed for 969 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.
“Those two times he ran, he was flying down the track,” Carroll said. “Some of the scouts had him at 4.35, so that’s a fantastic showing for Chauncey. He looked incredibly fit and buffed up and the whole thing.”
Fred Davis was said to have had a solid workout and the recent Mackey Award winner is coming off a 62-catch, eight-TD campaign. While there were a number of other performers, nobody would outshine Rivers or Ellis in the California sun.

Thu, April 3, 2008 - 7:14pm EDT"Keith Rivers is a stud. We won't waste our #6 pick on him though. There will be even better athletes on the board at #6. We could always pick someone up someone like Phillip Wheeler from Georgia Tech with one of our 4th rounders If we plan on grabbing a linebacker! Ellis is also nice but We wont grab him either. If the player we want isn't there at 6 we will trade with Cincy! They want him bad !"

Fri, April 4, 2008 - 6:27am EDT"Lets forget fitting square holes with round pegs, therefore scratch Rivers at 1.6. I am still confident J. Jones will trade down to the top 10 and hopefully we can get a deal done and take their 2 late 1 rds. A man like that needs the spotlight and has the cash to make the splash. Someone wrote on < the preseason and > the regular season = a great idea ! Randy, is there any serious talk on that ?"
Eric Allen Said:
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 9:14am EDT"There has been discussion in the NFL on fewer preseason games and one or two more regular-season games for a while, ira, but nothing is imminent."
Ira Said:
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 8:06am EDT"Eric, Sure they can shift Rivers to ILB in a 3-4 scheme. But it goes back to my original question. Vilma is about the same size as Rivers and would get caught up with the same problem as Vilma had playing in a 3-4 unless they feel Jenkins is the difference and Rivers would have the gaps to get to the ball because Jenkins takes up so much space. "
Howard Said:
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 9:09am EDT"ok i think i figured out what the jets should do in the draft, check w/the boys and trade down in rd.1 at 22 q groves at 28 d conner in rd.2 trade down a few spots if possible and get a conner then with a 3rd. we pick up in trade o line depth.w/the 2nd 4th rd pick m.monk wr from arkansas.tall fast and pretty good hands he was hurt this past yr and does need a good yr. of coaching his rtes."
Ira Said:
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 12:44pm EDT"If Parcells takes J.Long who are thinks the Jets would get lucky and have C.Long drop to them at #6? That probably would be the best player they could get and use. Then get the CB and WR later."
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 12:53pm EDT"Ira I think you are right the Jets are going to take a corner back if Gholston, C Long & McFadden are gone. The Jets 4 big needs are corner, pass rushing OLB, saftey & 3rd WR. No WR or saftey is projected top 5 we will take the best corner out there with our pick"
Ira Said:
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 2:59pm EDT"Tom Spicer, To me it really makes the most sense to take a CB in the 1st rd. Look at the projected lineup for the D. The only spot unknown is opposite Revis. Even if Gholson is there at #6 i wouldn't complain but i just have a funny feeling about this guy. Inconsistent and disappears scares me. I'm sure the Jets would love to drop down a few spots p/u another pick and take the best CB then."

He gives Jets fan a horrible name with his nonsense.....The Jets would draft me or Frank before they draft K Rivers. I would hate to take a CB but it could play out that way at #6. I just keep getting the feeling that the Falcons and or Chiefs are going to suprise everyone. "

Sat, April 5, 2008 - 12:50am EDT"Please just draft somebody that fits our beloved scheme! We've learned that much thus far. Fit the scheme or we will ruin your stats, your heart, and your value. Row Said:
Sat, April 5, 2008 - 7:21pm EDT"Drew, I was talking about Lito Sheppard. I never had a problem with robertson, but I can't see him fitting our scheme unless on the outside. I would prefer we not trade him. I never wanted to trade Vilma. I am not on the Limas Sweed bandwagon. I like DJ because he can be a gamebreaker in the slot, we need that. C Johnson is no bigger then him, just has about 3 inches of height, CJ plays 4 downs!"
Charles Fu Said:

He is just about the same size as Vilma in that 235 lbs range. While he should be a very good player in the NFL is he too small for a 3-4 scheme? The only player here i can see the Jets taking is Booty on day 2."
