File Under: Eric Smith, Rashad Washington, Derrick Ward, compensatory picks, 2008 draft, Trevor Johnson
03/31 — The NFL has just announced that it has awarded 32 compensatory picks in the 2008 draft. It's not necessarily a surprise that the Jets did not get any of those picks.
Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. Not every FA lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula, which was developed by the NFL Management Council.
Last year, the Jets signed four unrestricted FAs from other teams — DE Kenyon Coleman, LB David Bowens, QB Marques Tuiasosopo and FB Darian Barnes — while losing only one of their own — FB B.J. Askew.
The bad news, in a sense, for the Jets, is that the two selections they have in the fourth round have been pushed down four slots due to the awarding of four compensatory picks at the end of Round 3 (although all teams in Round 4 knew they would lose some position due to the extra choices).
Here is a summary of the Jets' six picks in the upcoming draft, as released by the league this afternoon:
| Round | Overall | Description |
| 1 | 6 | Own |
| 2 | 36 | Own |
| 3 | 67 | To CAR in Kris Jenkins trade |
| 4a | 102 | Own |
| 4b | 113 | From NO in Jonathan Vilma trade |
| 5 | 141 | To CAR in Kris Jenkins trade |
| 6 | 171 | Own |
| 7 | 211 | Own |
The Jets have received only five picks since compensatories were first awarded in 1994. Four came in 2004, with T Adrian Jones being selected in the fourth round and three more players — DE Trevor Johnson, RB Derrick Ward and S Rashad Washington — taken consecutively in Round 7.
Then in 2006 the Green & White received their highest compensatory pick ever, the last pick of Round 3, 97th overall, and with it took S Eric Smith.
The five compensatories are the fewest awarded under the system to any team that has been in existence all 15 years the system has been in place. The only teams with fewer compensatories are Cleveland with one and Houston with three. Baltimore has the most compensatories in that span with 29.

"Wayne, Pete Kendall was traded, not lost via free agency, so he doesn't figure in the NFL's compensatory calculations."
Albert Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 5:56pm ET"I thought the Jets recieved a late round draft pick for Jerry Mackey LB?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Albert, the pick they received from TB for Mackey was a conditional pick that reverted to the Buccaneers when they waived Mackey."
Drew Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 5:58pm ET"With all of the FA moves I really like our position. Wished it was #5 instead of #6 since there are 4 blue chip prospects plus a QB but still think we can do damage with our first 4 selections. Lets just pray for Herm to do something foolish.......... Randy, did we ever get a pick for Bollinger?? I thought we (suprisingly) got a conditional pick for him or did we get that in 07? "
Randy Lange Said:
"Drew, the Jets got DT C.J. Mosley and Minnesota's seventh-round pick in this draft for Brooks Bollinger on Aug. 31, 2006. Three days later, the Jets traded that No. 7 to Oakland for DE Bobby Hamilton."
Frank Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 6:03pm ET"Based on the formula that is used to make these calculations and since we have received only 5 representing the third worst while the Ravens have received something in and around 30 goes to show how poorly the Jets have drafted over the years. This is a rather ignominious ranking. Looks like the D-Rob trade is heating up again with the Bronco's at this point just unloading his salary is a plus."
Brian Di Vito Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 6:54pm ET"didnt the jets recieve a pick from washington. i could have sworn it was a fifth rounder."
Randy Lange Said:
"Brian, the undisclosed pick from Washington in the Pete Kendall trade is for the 2009 draft."
Ira Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 7:10pm ET"Randy, Too bad about those spots they will have to move down. But you know i am always looking at the glass half full so the good news is the 4th rd has been good to the Jets. Rhodes, Cotchery and Leon were all selected in the 4th rd. So their good fortune in the 4th rd should continue. GO JETS!!!!"
Pete Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 8:31pm ET"Still need WR, CB, OLB, DE. We don't have too many picks and we have even less money to spend after the last few weeks. We have to trade down and stockpile talent with our situation. If we draft at 6, I regretfully predict a long hold out that Mangini doesn't have time for. Imagine if Revis reported on time and had the whole summer to improve. No way we draft a QB as this team needs help now!"
Derick Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 9:32pm ET"Since Tennenbaum is set on destorying the team he should just give away the 6th overall pick just like how he just gave away the best middle linebacker in the game."
Dunnie Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 9:34pm ET"IRA .... I need you to bottle some of that eternal optimism and send it over here to NJ. =). I agree ... the 4th round has been good to us =). BTW : Is anyone here going to the draft ? "
Alan Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 9:44pm ET"True True Ira but theyre first rouders havent been bad either in the past few years Revis, Vilma, And hopefully this year Gholston!!!! JETS!!!!!!! cant wait for draft only a month away im pumped and siked "
Brody Said:
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 11:44pm ET"I agree that Vilma is a "Good" middle linebacker but, Is he big enough to be a dominate player in the 3-4 defensive scheme? Harris played the position very well last year. Let's just hope the addition of Pace is the answer for size and quickness that we desperately need at MLB. Has anyone heard anything about Coles and his future with us? "
Lou Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 1:00am ET"i think the jets should draft a wide receiver with their pick.. maybe trade down to do so but i would love to see them take MARIO MANNINGHAM and have a future with cotchery and manningham.he has height and speed wee need at that postion...cotchery has the braun and hands.... mario gives us another option.... gholston while he is a beast i mean really we have ellis jenkins thomas pace there."
mr bill Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 4:22am ET"Now that I see the actual draft picks we have it only solidifies my belief the JETS will look to move out of the 6th spot for someones late 1st and thier 2nd. If we stay put or move up then WOODY wants to win now and that wouldbe great. But lets keep our feet well grounded; thats a lot of baby shampoo he has to sell already."
d Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 5:54am ET"Hey derick,Take a chill pill,Remember the name calvin pace,We can only do better then last year!GO JETS"
TAtlas Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 9:10am ET"Now for anyone to say that Tannebaum is ruining the team... How does Vilma fit in a 3-4?? He doesn't as much as I am a fan and I think he is one of the best middle linebackers. the Jets had to let him go. There is no room for him on the Jets anymore.. Vilma was one of the best LB I have seen. But lets give Harris some Credit he is up and coming"
Ira Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 10:03am ET"TAtlas, Forget about Harris being up and coming . He is a major impact player right now and will be a Pro Bowl Player this year and for many more to come. Imagine him running free now behind Jenkins which he didn't have that luxury of last year. BTW Kirwin has the Jets taking McKelvin at #6 in his mock draft today.Besdies his CB skills he is an explosive return man."
joe b Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 10:23am ET"Didn't we get a conditional pick in 09 for JV based on performance. How high a pick can that be ? With 4 of the top 113 we should be able to get at least 3 or 4 very good players . 171 & 211 will be a reach at the least. 2nd or early 4th shoule be a WR. With the 1st if DMac is there pick him and then take offers on him or TJ. Wait & see if someone we want is still available before we trade. "
Randy Lange Said:
"Joe B, the choice for Jonathan Vilma in '09 can be a second- or third-rounder, based on Vilma's playing time and on his signing a new deal with the Saints. If that happens, the Jets would send their fourth-rounder back to NO."
hopeful Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 10:31am ET"randy, where is the pick that they received for pete kendall? thought it was a 4th rounder."
Randy Lange Said:
"Hopeful, the undisclosed pick from Washington for Pete Kendall is in the 2009 draft."
JOHNNYJET Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 10:53am ET"RANDY- WE SHOULD GET COMPENSATORY PICKS. ISN'T THE NFL SUPPOSED TO BE FAIR ABOUT THIS WHOLE THING WITH ALL 32 TEAMS!"
Randy Lange Said:
"JohnnyJet, teams get compensatory picks only when they lose more free agents than they sign. The Jets signed more than they lost last year. Only 15 teams got compensatory picks this year; 17 did not."
Brandon Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 11:11am ET"I love the confidence in Harris I really do. But let him start more then 10 games before we put him up there with Ray Lewis. As for the draft, whatever our beloved team drafts we need. We have done a nice job filling holes, but we have a little ways to go. QB,RB,WR,DB,OL (depth),DL,LB and even Punter are all needs. & Vilma wasn't one of the best LB's I have ever seen.He was a good player not a HOF"
Ira Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 11:39am ET"Randy, So if things work out the way i think they will the Jets could end up with two 2nd rd picks a 4th rd pick for Kendall which like you said goes to the Saints and an extra pick if the D-Rob trade with Denver goes down. I think if D-Rob is traded it will include a 2009 pick. "
CEDRIC Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 12:25pm ET"Shout out to D-Bo, came along way...KC can only get better, he was much better from year 1 to 2, so imagine year 3, if he works on his accuracy, but KC has this winning aura that I see but i dont if anyone else does. I just feel the offense is limited with CP under center. i want a WR in the 2nd but i dont wanna give up on Stuckey, we need a SLOT WR n B.Smith can be our tall WR but we pick 1 up."
Pat Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 4:03pm ET"I guess we dont get anything for Pete Kendall until next year, most likely a 4th rounder also next year we get another 4th rounder if Vilma plays a certain amount. Right???"
Randy Lange Said:
"Pat, your questions are answered at the end of some other comments at the end of this Radar entry."
Pete Said:
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 8:09pm ET"Brandon, Harris is for real. He clearly displayed this by being the most consistent performer on a very weak defense. Vilma wasn't that good. Name me the most recent Jet LB you watched play that was better. 100+ tackles, sideline to sideline, smart, motor, leader, no baggage, athlete and football player, studied film, called the defense. Rhodes credits him with teaching him how to prepare in NFL!"

Wed, April 2, 2008 - 8:09am ET"What happnede to the draft pick the jets were to receive from Tampa Bay for Mackey whom they traded over last summer?"

Wed, April 2, 2008 - 7:10pm ET"Derick, I agree we gave away Vilma. As for Sheppard, that would the best decision Mr. T has made since the post season. We can get lito for a 2nd rounder, why waste a first? "
Tyrone Said:
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 1:00pm ET"With the 113 pk. Rd. 4, they should get a corner like Tyvon Branch, good size, bulk, time speed and a good tackler. And with pick 171, Rd.6, a QB Kevin O`Connell is a safe pick. He has what you need too play position. "
