File Under: Eric Mangini, Erik Coleman, Tom Brady, Abram Elam
03/05 — Lost in the Jets' signing frenzy of the last week was the departure of a veteran player with a positive attitude. Safety Erik Coleman, who was an unrestricted free agent, signed with the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday.
Coleman provided the Jets with some strong play for a fifth-round draft pick, starting the first 36 games of his career. And he opened that career with a bang when he made interceptions in his first two games as a pro, against the Bengals and Chargers in the first two games on the 2004 schedule.
His biggest game may well have been the 17-14 upset of the Patriots at Gillette Stadium in 2006. He had eight tackles on defense (plus another on kick coverage), and his pick of a harassed Tom Brady at the Pats 38 set up the Chad Pennington-to-Jerricho Cotchery touchdown pass that made it 17-6 with 4:45 to play.
Coleman unofficially had eight double-digit tackle efforts, topped by 13 takedowns in the 2005 regular-season finale vs. Buffalo and two more after head coach Eric Mangini took over — 10 in the win over the Lions in '06, 10 more in the playoff loss at New England, and 12 in the home defeat of the Dolphins last season.
The young man from the great state of Washington also wore a friendly smile and had a kind word at all times, even after he lost his starting job to Abram Elam last midseason, and he was one of the top Jets when it came to the important community work the team does.
Coleman's reaction this past season after returning to practice following a one-game layoff after he suffered a concussion in Game 4 at Buffalo was typical of his attitude in general.
"It feels great to be out there with the team and participating," he said. "It was one of the toughest things to have to watch your team go out there and play without you. It is hard and you don’t want to get used to that."
Coleman's team now dresses in red and black, not green and white, but I know he'll take his winning personality with him to Flowery Branch, Ga. Here's a hearty wish for a continuation of your solid NFL career, Erik.

Abram Elam really brings the wood when he hits though.J.Miller should be better and if Woolfolk has anything to bring to the table they may not have to draft a CB.WR position isn't worth a 1st round pick this year, but we definetly need a 4.3 guy."Mendenhal "(rb)seems to be the better runner with his size and strength and speed. We will have all of our draft picks & still have added Pace, Jenkins, Woody & Faneca. Move Robertson to DE he is an upgrade over Coleman at DE"

Get rid of Chad so we do not have to deal with a QB controversy all year with a guy (Chad) who is clearly on the down side of his career draft Long/Gholston start them over Thomas at OLB I THINK OUR D WILL BE CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER I love the j-e-t-s JETS JETS JETS "

Wed, March 5, 2008 - 3:32pm EDT"CHAD is just an OK QB! CHAD is MAYBE a little above Average QB. CHAD needs a RUNNING game to help him. Great QBs can take a game over and win with JUST their ARM. Example DAN MARINO and TOM BRADY. CHAD will NEVER get to these QBS level. CHAD has had his 4 to 5 yrs to develop. Now it is CLEMENS turn. If CLEMENS can't get it done, then we need to move on! JETS fans, STOP settling for JUST OK!"

I doubt he makes it through the 2nd or 3rd round and wouldn't be surprised if hes taken in the first. Next to Tom, why would we move robertson to DE he is too slow. I agree get rid of Chad but we have 2 options with robertson trade or move to a 4-3 "

Wed, March 5, 2008 - 8:46pm EDT"Yeh, like everyone says Eric is a great player and will be missed...good luck to him in Atlanta. One thing I dislike about free agency as a lot of people is everyone's expendable and players are used as trading cards. I'm still old school in a sense that I like team because of players, not ONLY winning record."
Pete Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 1:05am EDT"Loved the Jenkins signing, hated losing Vilma. Faneca is a great player, but how do you make a guard the highest paid lineman in NFL history? We are starting to make too many moves now. Good teams build through the draft, and keep the studs they find there. This looks like an entirely new team. Mangini should finish the process and change the team name and uniform. No cap room for a long time! "
Pete Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 1:08am EDT"I hope I am wrong and we field a great team next year. However, we are no longer a team but a collection of free agents. Mark my words, if next year doesn't work, we will have plenty of high priced players nobody wants. Long, long rebuilding phase with tweeners (i.e. 3-4) and no cap room. Am I the only one that thinks we are trying to do too much in too little time?"
Pete Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 1:16am EDT"Whoever thinks CP should start knows NOTHING about football. Brilliant guy, great leader, good decision maker, hard worker..............TWO ROTATOR CUFF SURGERIES! It is not his fault but he can't throw anymore. And yes, he can throw the deep ball, but NO, he can't throw a 15 yard out pattern. He is getting his receivers killed with his floating balls and can't put it between defenders. "
Ira Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 7:02am EDT"Randy, Mr. T continues to improve this team with the signing of Richardson. The 3 time Pro Bowler is a nice addition for a team that hasn't had any production from a true Fb since Sowell has left. The H-Back spot using TE's just wasn't working. With Schotty used to Neal in his backfield when he was with the Chargers this should help the O very much. Not only is TR a great blocker, he can catch."
Drew Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 9:22am EDT"Met E Coleman one night in the city and was a really great guy. I was a little suprised he found a team so fast. He lost his job a couple of times the last two years. I do wish him luck in Atlanta. His going to need it with that mess down there.....There are a couple of papers killing the Jets for overspending. All I know is we are a much better team today that last week. Mr T is a genius. "
oldtimegreen Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 10:04am EDT"Nice piece on EC Randy. By all accounts a good guy, we genuinely wish him well, 'cept of course whenever he plays us. EC's positive presence should help his new team. Football heaven knows Atlanta can use any positive it can get. "
Randy Lange Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 10:06am EDT"And just as with Jonathan Vilma in New Orleans, oldtimegreen, the next time the Jets could face Erik Coleman is when they play Atlanta (at the Meadowlands) in 2009."
Kurt Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 10:34am EDT"EC was a great presence, but I don't think any of us honestly thought that all the new expensive free agents weren't going to mean sacrifices elsewhere. Whether we overpaid or not is a purely academic matter, the fact is, management did what it had to do to improve the team. Now i can only pray we find a way to trade up to secure Darren McFadden. We need a franchise type back and he is the guy."
Tom Spicer Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 10:54am EDT"The Jets signed Tony Richardson all pro fullback from the Vikings he is a good pass catcher & a crushing blocker. They need to work on depth at DE the book is not out on Coleman yet, OLB Thomas could be a 1 year wonder, Cornerback & Safety. Also I just was thinking Justin Miller was out all of last year this year with him & leon returning kickoffs together they will be the best duo in the league "
Ira Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 12:21pm EDT"Drew, Mark my words EC wil have a great year for the Falcons. Just didn't seem to fit like others in this system. On the positive i do like Elam and i am really hoping they can sign Wilson. Interesting how this secondary is shaping up right now. Poteat is still unsigned and think the Jets should sign him soon."
Frank Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 12:39pm EDT"The Pace signing is what is creating the tension with our current players. I would have preferred that we gave Rhodes and Baker a new contract. This definitely upsets the salary structure of the team. This is what I can't stand about Tangini they don't realize the effect some of their actions have on the team. There is a disconnect with the players and they better learn to bridge that gap."
Danielle Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 1:51pm EDT"I loved Erik Coleman for all the reasons you mentioned, and was a little sad to hear that he moved on. I know last season was tough on everyone, but he always seemed so warm and friendly. I wish him nothing but the best in Atlanta."

Thu, March 6, 2008 - 2:19pm EDT"Hogan, I have heard nothing that would indicate those players won't be ready to participate this year. In the next couple of days I'll be writing a story about Justin Miller's rehab and his outlook for the coming season."
Drew Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 2:15pm EDT"Frank, Do you find a reason to complain about everything Tangini does?? The team went out and signed players that fit the Mangini system. The same system that everyone has killed them for running. Yes they should have done this last year but they didnt. Plus who cares if players moan, they went 4-12 last year. Winning bridges gaps!! Mr T knows the cap better than anyone and Rhodes will get signed!"
Ira Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 2:34pm EDT"Frank, Drew is right. Players coming off a 4-12 having nothing to say if they are under contract. Rhodes might have to wait until later on. If not they will have to tag him next season. It will get done. BTW it seems that all these contracts were front loaded according to a report by Cimini. So they are not that bad and count about 10% towards this years cap. Great job by Mr. T and staff."
Drew Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 3:01pm EDT"I have been posting the same message for days. Look at the language in these contracts..They look like they have huge signing bonuses but they are really just front loaded contracts. The years they are not going to get cut anyway. Everyone thought the Jenkins contract was 20 mil but it was really like 8 mil guaranteed. Mr T has been courted by Parcells for years to be his cap guy. Mr T is the man"

Rob Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 3:24pm EDT"Hey Ira, I agree with you and Drew on this. Its true that we might have paid a lot for new players, but it is to fill spots with best players. We couldn't afford to go bargain hunting...esp. since we have room under cap. Randy or anyone, how does the cap effect our draft signings? I'm completely ignorant about that."
Randy Lange Said:
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 4:24pm EDT"Rob, the NFL gives every team a dollar figure representing the maximum cap space they are allowed to spend in signing draft picks and undrafted FAs. A team's rookie pool is based on the number and position of its picks. Teams with higher picks are allocated more dollars per pick than teams with lower picks. The Jets and every other team are aware of their potential pool amounts from now through the signing of all their rookie contracts."

I am specifically talking about the Pace signing 22 million guaranteed and making him one of the highest paid LB's is ridiculous. Again he is a 2nd tier guy not an impact player like Samuel would have been the Jets were horrible on forcing turnovers last year a total 21 TO's."

I hope the sign Rhodes too though. He is a pro bowl caliper S and would be hard to replace. Anyone know if Ty Law still plans to play. Maybe bring him back if the $ is right."
