03/03 — Before another busy day for the Jets organization reached its conclusion, general manager Mike Tannenbaum threw some love to Woody. The Jets have made a definitive statement since the beginning of the free agency/trading period and the CEO has played a major part.

“It was a great opportunity for the organization. We did a lot of planning with the coaches, the pro and college scouts, and we got tremendous support from Woody,” Mr. T told reporters. “That’s Woody Johnson — not Damien Woody.”

The amiable Jets owner played an important role as the Jets struck first by trade — acquiring big NT Kris Jenkins from the Panthers on Friday — and then in free agency with the additions of LG Alan Faneca, OLB Calvin Pace and OL Damien Woody. Johnson, of course, signs the checks, but he took a prominent hands-on role.

“We’re excited about what we accomplished here. It was a very methodical process and competitive with some of these players,” Tannenbaum said. “We’re really excited to add the four players we did in Kris, Alan, Calvin and Damien. We feel really good where we are relative to playing our cap for the next couple of years.”

This off-season will be remembered as perhaps the most aggressive spring in franchise history. The Green & White, who entered the market comfortably under the cap, targeted their needs and attacked accordingly.

“I think all these guys should contribute here for a number of years and we just felt it was an opportunity,” said the GM. “I think sometimes spending in the NFL can become a little cyclical, and we had the opportunity to try to improve our team and we tried to take advantage of that opportunity.”

As Tannenbaum said, they’ll like the leadership, experience and toughness they’ll receive from this new quartet. But the Jets aren’t dramatically shifting their thinking.

“We want to draft as many of our players and then proactively sign them to extensions like we did with Sione [Pouha],” Tannenbaum said. “That’s still our core philosophy. With these four players in particular, we just felt like there were opportunities to improve us at positions that could be upgraded.”

One player who remains a Jets as of late this evening is DT Dewayne Robertson. Numerous reports suggested a framework had been in place for a D-Rob-to-Cincinnati trade, but that transaction never finalized.

“Right now, Dewayne is a member of the organization. Obviously we were close today, but he is a member of our organization,” Tannenbaum said. “Our off-season program starts on March 17 and unless something changes between now and then, we expect him to be here.”

Can we expect the Jets to be done with free agency?

“As someone suggested to me, I think we bought the suit. Now we just have to go get maybe a couple of neckties,” said the third-year GM. “I hope over the next couple of days there will be a few more things that we’re looking at.”

"If someone happens to pull an ace and take Gholston then we shoud draft mcfadden he can definately help out and provide new offensive options. Back to a dallas trade. If Jones feels that he needs to move up in the draft he can simply use on 1st rnd pick with later picks to move up a few slots and take felix and still have another 1st rnder . also remeber that dalls has other needs too."

"see what the jets should do is attack the draft getting a quarter back like hene or the kid from delaware, a tight end like butler out of michigan and the takle jake long out of michigan and a WR like mario manningham =] these are some other spots that should get filled"
