02/29 — The Jets defense got better today. Draft picks are nice, but you weren’t going to find a 6’4”, 349-pound NT who can anchor your front come April. Kris Jenkins has the ability to be a dominant nose in the 3-4 and his passion for football is undeniable.
Jenkins is a three-time Pro Bowler, having earned trips while a member of the Carolina Panthers in 2002, ’03 and ’06. Injuries limited him to a combined five games in ’04 and ’05, but he played in every contest each of the past two seasons and he was the Panthers' best D-lineman in '07, recording 53 tackles and three sacks.
Beyond the numbers, he’s an absolute handful for any offensive lineman. He can’t be blocked with one man and this acquisition just made ILB David Harris that much better. Now a likely three-man front of Jenkins and DEs Shaun Ellis and Kenyon Coleman looks very formidable and will create more room for all the ‘backers to do their thing.
The Jets finished 29th against the rush last season (allowing 134.8 yards per game) and they weren’t going to let that happen again. Enter Jenkins, a space-eater who not only will impact the rush D but can create a push up the middle. Ask any quarterback and he’ll tell you it's the pressure up the gut that gives him the most difficulty. Despite a constant double, Jenkins has racked up 18 sacks in 69 career games.
Jenkins, who is entering his eighth NFL season, will turn 29 in August. Naysayers will say he’s battled the bulge on occasion and they’ll also point to his knee injury in ’05 and shoulder injury in ’04. But that’s well in the past and the thing you have to love about this guy is his fire.
"I don't just play for the money. I play because that's in my heart," he told the Charlotte Observer last year. "I've been playing since I was 8. I love this game; I love it. And when my kids see me, they love it.
"I don't look at it as a profession like everybody else does. It's still a gladiator's sport. And what I'm doing I love doing."
After seven years in Carolina, a change of address should suit Jenkins well. A second-round pick in 2001 out of Maryland, he’ll now be a shorter drive or a quick airport shuttle away from his family.
“I guess it's because I'm getting to the point where I'm missing being away from my family and not being able to see my kids [sons Kris Jr. and Marcus] grow up,” he said in December.
Defensively the Jets did some growing up in last season's second half and Jenkins will help the spurt in '08.

Fri, February 29, 2008 - 2:56pm EDT"Now with a 355 pound NT heading to the JETS we can if not traded, move Dewayne to DE and have a line close to 900 lbs with thomas, harris, barton and hopefully gholston swarming on the pass rush. With Faneca all but signed, we just need to sign a RT or draft one, with a third receiver. I think after that OL, even our backs will shine and gives our QB's a chance to prove themselves @ right condtns"

Fri, February 29, 2008 - 3:21pm EDT"This is a great move by Mr. T. Not a knock on D-Rob but like Vilma just didn't fit the system. Jenkins has that big body that will take up 2 OL and leave gaps for the LB's to get to the ball. Hogan, They will continue to strike early and land some more new players. Faneca is in the batters box."

Issac Bruce was cut form rams and is getting older so hed fit good for us as a 3rd string and Thankn you so much Mike Tannebaum for getting us kris jenkins for just 2 draft picks that were getting back from vilma!!!and for vilma i loved him but he didnt fit a 3-4"
Russell Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 3:36pm EDT"Now that Vilma has been traded, I hope the Jets trade Robertson to a team like Denver or Tampa Bay, looking for defensive line help and Coles to a team looking for help at the wide receiver position. I'll accept draft picks for both those players and then let's sign some free agents, make some good draft choices and maybe the Jets can be a playoff contender in 2008."

Fri, February 29, 2008 - 3:44pm EDT"Picking Up Kris Jenkins was a great move for the Jets. He will help out against the running game. Next we need to pick up alan faneca who will get big money. Since Asante samuel wants a lot of money, maybe the jets go with Drayton Florence for less money. David Patten would be a good pickup in the slot"
Fans are not STUPID! Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 4:00pm EDT"You see, these Coaches act like WE fans are STUPID when (WE) say things like, we need a BIGGER nose tackle. Now the JETS finally get a REAL nose tackle with some SIZE like (Kris Jenkins). And the JETS fans could ALSO see VILMA was to small and was doing good in Mangini's 3-4. But Mangini denied ALL of this like, WE fans don't know what we talking about. It about TIME!"
Nick Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 4:10pm EDT"I love the move harris is going to be a monster and if we get gholsten are defense is going to be fast. I thought i heard something about us and fanaca i hope thats true he would help are o line big time"
Anonymous Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 4:12pm EDT"JETS can't afford to OVER PAY for all of these HIGH priced free agents. The JETS will have to choose between ALAN FANECA and ASANTE SAMUELS. And the JETS must consider their (AGE) when signing them."
Jeremy Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 4:24pm EDT"Great Pick up. I think they did this with the expectation of getting those picks back by traded Vilma. A 350 lb NT is essential for a 3-4 and this should really help Harris, not that he needs help, the guy is a stud. Surprised the first move was on D, not the O Line. If the JETS don't fix the O Line and admit D'Brick is a Bust it wont matter how good the D is. Desperately need to fix O LINE"
Jim Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 4:24pm EDT"It's about time we got a NT! The signing of Pouha makes me rest easier as well, he took a major step forward last season. Robertson, like Vilma are good players for a 4-3, D-rob needs to exit next with that cap number. I don't like the stories of Samuel coming to the Jets, the only thing the defense needs is a pass-rusher. The O-line needs life support."
Jeremy Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 4:31pm EDT"Really happy Pouha got an extension, the guy plays hard and clogs the middle. Expect JETS to get those picks back by trading either D. Rob or Vilma. In either case, it's a must to fill the holes in the O Line. Best Offesive stat was 19 with most 25 or worse. Need to admit D'Brick is a complete Bust, trade him or move him to the right side. Since we have no FB, pick up Neal from Chargers!!"
Jay Etees Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 4:47pm EDT"Shame we played a 3-4 defense with a roster more suited for the 4-3. At least now we have the roster suited for the defense. Leave my man Coles alone. His skill sets and effort are first rate. Now, if we can pick up a couple of offensive line studs, we will be competitive. Go get em Chad!!"
Dan Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 4:56pm EDT"its a good start. I like the move. Maybe we can get a draft pick back or something for D Rob. Pouha has never impressed me, but I did see some signs of growth last year. I hope he works out. Still need a CB and DE to rush the passer....O line too. Then we can worry about a speedy wide out. Overall, I think we're gonna see some good moves and the Jenkins signing is a good start!"
Andrew in Tucson Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 5:39pm EDT"Randy, Finally the Jets have the big man in the middle. Pouha is a great player I am glad he will be sticking around. I really like Vilma and am kinda sad to see him leave but the is the nature of the beast in the NFL. I Wish him the best in NO! Now we can kill the QB! Lets hope we make up some sacks we didn't get in 07. #1 on the list tom brady THE BRADY CRUNCH! THE BRADY CRUNCH! GO JETS!"
Drew Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 5:49pm EDT"If the Jets sign Faneca I want all of you Tangini haters (Frank) to see these guys know what they are doing. Jenkins is certainly not a guy who keeps his mouth shut and neither is Faneca but they are beasts on the field. We are not just bringing in choir boys. Mangini change the attitude after Herm.. Yes they waited to long to move Vilma/D-Rob and Kendell was a mess but year 3 looks good today"
denise dukas Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 5:50pm EDT"There is no one like Jenkins in the Draft. Sed. Ellis is too small for NT. Good move by Jets, Now get Gholsen or another top OLB to rush and the D is already better. Vilma is a nice guy but his real size is 6.0 and 220-- more like a Safert than MLB."
austin Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 5:57pm EDT"i'm really psyced about jenkins coming to the Jets, that eliminates a major need"
Jetsfandan Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 6:45pm EDT"Now we just need to get rid of Robertson, hopefully we can get a decent pick or something for him. He is the last piece remaining from our 4-3 defense. It is his time to go. "
G-Wiz Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 6:47pm EDT"I like the first few moves. Faneca will help D'Brick out; he's not a bust either. I just think it was hard for him to overcome the loss of Kendall and have to try to overcompensate for the lack of a proficient LG. NOW, grab Jake Long in the draft and put him at RT. Yeah, it's a lot of $ to invest in the OL, but it'd be beast. Plus, a guy like Erin Henderson could be just as effective as Gholston. "
Check Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 6:52pm EDT"The Kris Jenkins move could end up being costly. The Jets are not just one or two players away. If the Jets do pick up Allen Faneca this will place them a lot closer to where they need to be. If they upgrade the Tight End position and get Gholston in the draft. The could cause a lot of damage this year. Go J-E-TS . They also need a bog, tall receiver."
Frank Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 7:14pm EDT"Drew what's wrong with you?Too much Kool Aide today? Seriously, I am not a Tangini hater. Last year they made a bunch of terrible decisions that ruined the season and the few good players we had. They obviously heard loud and clear my voice and everyone else's and finally got the message. That being that you're going to be held accountable or get hammered for stupidity."
Jim Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 7:29pm EDT"I agree with G-Wiz about the drafting of Long completely. If Faneca comes along at the same time, we just need to upgrade from Moore. The backs should have great years. It should also allow WR's time to get more than 15yds downfield. Give Baker the extension and trade Coles. He's now concussion prone and probably won't even make 16 games the next 2 years combined. Stuckey IS the deep guy."
Justin Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 8:13pm EDT"Not exactly, what the Jets need is a small, deep threat fast reciever. Coles days could be numbered as a Jet, Brad Smith and Jerricho Cotchery are both Possesion recievers. I really think the Jets should consider signing WR Javon Walker. The man is talented, is deep threat and scares opposing seondaries. As for Jenkins, it was a good aquire. Now the Jets need to finalize the deal on Faneca. "
Ablity Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 8:14pm EDT"IF YOU WATCH THE JETS GAME YU SEE THAT D-ROB GET DUBBLE ALLOT BECAUSE HE WAS THE MOST TALENTED PERSON ON OUR LINE, BUT NOW WE IS NOT JINKINS IS AND IF WE PUT D-ROB AT DE HE WILL GET REAL GOOD REAL FAST. AND WHY PEOPLE FOR 3 YEAR NOW ALWAYS SAID WE NEED A TE, CHIRS BAKER IS A GREAT BLOCK, HAS GREAT HANDS, AND HE IS STRONG. THE GUY HAS ALL YOU NEED TO BE A GOOD TE SO QUIT IT. GIVE UP ON JAKE L MAN"

Sun, March 2, 2008 - 1:43am EDT"jenkins is a great DT but we should really try to resign d-rob for more year and less money which if we release him we will get anyway. d-rob will be a beast next year because this year he was had 2 blocker on him allot and now this year they cant afford because jenkins is there, d-rob has got stronger and faster and in this defense DE HAVE TO BE BIG LIKE DT NOT LIKE DE IN THE 4-3. D-ROB IS BEAST "

Its a steep price, but he would be great on the RE in the 3/4 or the 3-technique tackle in the 4/3, rotating with Coleman and Ellis. What will B.Thomas do this year, 8.5 sacks of 2 years ago or 4.5 of this year.? C.Pace should sign today. MCFADDEN"
