02/23 — The defense arrived at the NFL Scouting Combine this morning. And right around noon, a player wearing the perhaps misleading code number of DL22 drew a crowd at the podium in the Indianapolis Convention Center.
Vernon Gholston is in the house.
Gholston is listed as a defensive lineman at the combine, and he was considered a DE at Ohio State. But OSU and college fans know he's more than that. He played the "Leo" position for the Buckeyes, so he was athletic and versatile enough to lead the team in sacks the past two seasons (22.5 total) yet also drop into coverage — which is how he snagged an interception last year vs. Bowling Green.
In fact, a question today about whether he was more comfortable playing up or down seemed to stump him. After a few seconds' pause, he concluded: "I'm comfortable with either one of them."
When pressed, he picked end over LB, giving a glimpse into the mindset that has turned him into one of the consensus top defensive picks, along with Virginia DE Chris Long and DTs Glenn Dorsey of LSU and Sedrick Ellis of Southern Cal, in April's draft.
"I love playing defensive end, getting after the quarterback and affecting the game that way," he said with his little laugh. "But at the end of the day, it's whatever the team puts me in."
Gholston's always had that athleticism, but he didn't always have football.
"I never really watched football as a kid," he said. "I watched basketball, I was a big wrestling fan, and I loved working out. Football was one of the ones that kind of slipped through the cracks."
But when a cut 6'2", 205-pound sophomore who doesn't put on the pads walks through the halls of his high school, it doesn't take long for the football coach to notice. That's how Tom Wilcher, the head coach at Cass Tech in Detroit, discovered Gholston in high school and turned him into an instant linebacker.
Now Gholston is 6'4" and 258 and he's just arrived at the combine. At his initial interview with reporters, he had yet to talk to any NFL teams, although he had about a dozen sessions set up for him, and yet to perform any drills. The young man who once squatted 455 pounds 20 times anticipated doing "about 35" reps in the 225-pound bench press.
The poignant question for every top draft pick who shows up in Indy this week is: How much will you be doing at the combine? Gholston's response:
"I'm planning on being fully active."
The team that ends up drafting him can express the same sentiments about Gholston's imminent pro career.

The other 3 were Miller,Brick and Revis. The Jets have been watching him play for the last 2 years. They should have a good book on him and if they think he will be the real deal they will draft him."

I think this year the FA may be as or more important than the draft. Tangini has done well in all there drafts and I'm sure they will in this one, but I belive we can not bank on all rookie talent to get this team where it nees to be. What do you think Randy? "

Sat, February 23, 2008 - 5:03pm EDT"I don't think C. Long, Dorsey, or Ellis are good fits for the Jets and how they play defense. If McFadden is gone at #6 Gholston has to be the guy, #6 is way to high for Sweed."

Sat, February 23, 2008 - 7:25pm EDT"Nothing would make me happier then getting Gholston as an Ohio State student and Jets fan, he is an absolute monster on the defensive line and would play very well in the 3-4 system."

Sat, February 23, 2008 - 7:50pm EDT"I love that the Jets draft Big Ten players. It makes sense for playing in NJ. They are used to the cold and usually play smashmouth ball....I hope we grab another in J Long but after todays's combine workout he is gone Top 3 come April. ........scjoe??? C Long is the the model for a 3-4 DE?? He would fit perfectly. The other 2 players you mentioned are bad fits though."
Drew Said:
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 8:24pm EDT"Just a correction on my earlier post....I meant to say C Long is "not" the model 3-4 DE but can play it because he did in college."

Sat, February 23, 2008 - 9:37pm EDT"We have to many holes on our d and o-line. We already have 2 solid backs, McFadden is not the answer when we have no one blocking up front. Draft o and d-line early and everything else will fall in place"

Sat, February 23, 2008 - 11:35pm EDT"Championship teams win the battles in the trenches. We need to focus on the OL and DL (and/or front seven) this off season. In FA, we need to sign an OG and/or RT. Draft - run stopping NT, pass rushing DE/OLB. We need to get pressure on the QB in order to help our CB and S. We also need an impact WR, ideally thru FA. Rooks usually take 3-4 yrs to develop. i dont have that kind of time!"

Sun, February 24, 2008 - 8:41am EDT"very nice reporting randy,i think if we pick up a guard in fa and a speed outside rusher in the draft it would be a great start to the 08 season.1 wr i like late is the kid monk from ark hes tall fast needs some time to devolop some."
Braeden Said:
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 10:38am EDT"I still want McFadden instead of Gholston. It doesnt get more mediocre than Vernon Gholston. We need an explosive player to fix this messed up offense. We can just get Quentin Groves in the 2nd round. Do you all really want New England to get McFadden, and we get some bland pass rusher. New England will be unstoppable."
Brad Said:
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 1:22pm EDT"I agree with Jared. We need to improve our lines on both sides of the ball. I hope we get Vernon Gholston to play OLB/DE and get a big DT like Red Bryant 6'5" 324lbs. - 2nd pick to stuff that middle so we can finally stop the inside run. Also need to improve the size of our OL, especially our OG maybe Roy Schuening or Will Arnold both around 6'4" 320lbs.-3rd pick"
Teddy Said:
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 1:48pm EDT"The Jets have a solid secondary our OLB's are a little slow it wouldn't hurt to get a little speed to help Vilma and Davis, if they decide to keep Vilma. We need a great DE or DT to help the LB's Gholston would be a great first pick. Offensively we have two great RB's but they are small some size would help. But the truth is we need a big TE or WR to go up and get the ball over an Asante."
Adrian Said:
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 2:35pm EDT"Randy I heard Sean Rogers is looking for out of Lion? If so whats the chances of we picking him up and put him at DT and put Gholston at De to start rebuilding our Defense?"
Ali Siddiqui Said:
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 3:05pm EDT"Yea I def think that at the postion the jets are, we have to pick up someone who is going to make an instant impact. I think Gholston fits that bill as a pass rushing olb/de in the 3-4. Pick up a guard in FA and all of the sudden our RB's will look like RB's again. I wanna give Kellen another year behind a better line...but i think we need to start looking at replacements at QB just incase. And WR"

Sun, February 24, 2008 - 9:20pm EDT"I don't get what is so good about playing in a 3-4 without the personnel. Whenever the Jets want to bring in any linebacker or linemen they always have to come from a 3-4 defense, and the fact is, most colleges in the NCAA use a 4-3 defense. If the Jets just decided to switch back to a 4-3 they wouldn't have a problem with Vilma or Robertson. The type of defense doesn't matter."
Alex Wiederspiel Said:
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 10:07am EDT"Never have I wanted the Jets to draft a player as much as I want them to take Gholston. I've caught several Ohio State match-ups in the Big Ten and he's looked utterly dominant collapsing the pocket. My two big wishes this off-season? Jacob Bell, Titans LG and Vernon Gholson!"
Jetsfandan Said:
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 6:05pm EDT"Gholston would be a fantastic pick. Heck, I would take him even if McFadden somehow falls to #6. Not only is he an extremely talented individual like McFadden, but he also fills a need of ours at OLB. At RB we already have Jones and Washington. And like Alex has said, I also hope we fill our void at LG with a talented young vet like Jacob Bell, and not someone like Alan Faneca. "
Anonymous Said:
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 7:17pm EDT"I think we shud take LG alan faneca in the F/A and keep vilma. He has good potential its just that hes not as productive because of a worse defensive line. Asante wud go good with Revis, and maybe getting a right tackle, or switching flozell adams from LT to RT would be good. In the draft, we shudnt take Mcfadden. He is not what we need right now. Sedrick Ellis or Glenn Dorsey would be awesome too"
Row Said:
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 10:50pm EDT"Everyone on here that has complained about Robertson, you will do the same thing with Gholston. He is actually smaller. I understand the position technicalities but there is no reason to draft him unless we decided to switch to 4 down lineman, put Vilma at MLB and Harris OLB. 4 years to develop, critch? Anyone remember Keyshawn Johnson? Harris ran people down after they had already gained 5 yds. "
seon Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 1:55pm EDT"i think the jets should draft gholston because we only have one good defensive end which is shaun ellis, if we put gholston on the other side it would be good for us because they both can pass rush "
Q_C Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 2:28pm EDT"Robertson undersized? Yeah, but Gholston isn't a DT. He's a DE, which makes him a good fit in NYJ. The question is, is that position the most important need? I don't see that Gholston would be a bad choice, especially given his talent level and player availability at the #6 spot. He'd be an excellent addition; but perhaps if Jake Long were still available then... Q_C"
Q_C Said:
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 3:15pm EDT"True enough, seon, though I dunno if we only have one good DE. Gholston might be better than our other options. He can also easily shift to LB. And thinking on those lines, given Ellis' distainct abilities and pass-rushing style, would it be that far-fetched to keep Robertson and move him outside? That's three big bodies on the D-Line with Jenkins there now. The linebackers could have a field day out there. Maybe I'm thinking too simply though."
eYe Said:
Sat, March 1, 2008 - 2:07pm EDT"Now that they have Jenkins, the Jets NEED to draft this kid Gholston or Chris Long. Shaun Ellis is a good player but he was never a great pass rusher, John Abraham did that while he was here. A front 7 of Ellis, Jenkins, Gholston, Hobson, Barton, Harris & whoever the 4th LB will be is not so bad. They shoulda traded Robertson along with Vilma to get a 1st & 4rd rounder, if possible."

Sat, February 23, 2008 - 2:40pm EDT"Randy, Gholston gave the right answer to that question about playing down or standing. He sounds like a young J. Abraham who showed so much promise in Groh's 3-4 D. Too bad they didn't stay in that type of system. He would have been a monster if he stayed healthy. Prediction if the Jets don't sign Pace in FA or another OLB who can get the QB they will take Gholston if C.Long is off the board."
