Allen is the senior managing editor of newyorkjets.com. He is in his seventh season with the Jets.
File Under: Mike Tannenbaum, Joey Clinkscales, RCA Dome, NFL Combine
02/21 — Before New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum left for Indianapolis and the NFL Combine, we dropped by his office for a quick Q&A. Mr. T, now in his 12th season with the Green & White and third as the GM, has a large Jets contingent at the RCA Dome as more than 300 top college prospects make their respective cases during interviews, physicals and workouts.
How much emphasis do you place on the combine?
Tannenbaum: The combine is another element in NFL teams' evaluation of college talent each year and we try to maximize our time to take full advantage of this opportunity. We'll explore all avenues to improve this football team and this is just one part of that process.
What can you learn about a player in the allotted interview time?
Tannenbaum: You can gauge a player's resiliency, his work ethic and his competitiveness. There is a lot of information to digest in a short period of time.
What’s your philosophy on building a team?
Tannenbaum: We want to build the team through the draft and we have selected players the last two seasons that have been productive and received significant playing time.
The Jets have fared very well in each of the past two drafts. Most recently, CB Darrelle Revis and LB David Harris both were rookie standouts. What does these successes say about your staff?
Tannenbaum: Joey Clinkscales, our director of college scouting, and his staff do a great job of researching and evaluating the talent, and we've been able to elevate the level of competition on the team in each season.

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 6:43pm EST"Wow, what an informative interview. It's always so exciting to hear from our G.M. The only thing more exciting is when the coach chimes in. Build through the draft, let's see we drafted 4 players, one was hurt in August, another was going be a starting guard-played a down or three al year, and two good players. So at this rate , two players a year we should have a good team in about ten more years"

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 7:36pm EST"Hey Jesse the body, use your head,Ferg, was what J.Long is now in a class of overated top 5 picks. Then we got Mangold soon to be a fixture in the pro bowl.Clemens is an above average QB if he has more than 3 seconds to throw. What about L.Washington,I think hes more valuable than Bush would of been. Why dont you check NFL.com to see all the wasted picks NE made in the last few years.HITMAN HARRIS!!!!!"
Ira Said:
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 8:19pm EST"Mr. T has done very well in his 1st two drafts. I would expect the same again this year. Clemens needs more time and it's not fair to judge him. He had a lot of obstacles to overcome last year and it was a good learning proccess that will help him with his career. Revis and Harris were both A+ picks for Mr. T. If he finds another 2 this year like them it would be great. GO JETS!!!!!"
Drew Said:
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 8:28pm EST"Wow Jesse what do you want our GM to say in this interview?? How about he tells everyone who we are going to draft or maybe he says who we are going to cut in a couple of weeks?? Some of you guys are hilarious. By the way Revis and Harris are better than good players. The last 3 years we have done much better than most teams have in the draft plus Mr T fixed a major cap problem. "
Gavin Said:
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 10:31pm EST"I have to agree, Tennenbaum has done a really good job. He has to build through the draft since Woody won't spend money on free agents. The only pick Mr. T messed up on was the D'Brick pick. Way to high for him .But I like every other pick. Can't wait to see what he does this year. Hope money is spent in free agency for OL,DL and DB help. Keep the posting Eric and how about a mock draft buddy."
cheps13 Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 2:14am EST"Look what happened to Brady with no time to pass the ball, he looked average.Give Kellen some time in the pocket and we saw spirts of what he can do ,he has a lazer arm!Tangini have done great in the draft,Harris,Leon,Revis,Kellon,Mangold.Brick, and so on cant wait for draft!"
Ira Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 6:54am EST"Reports in todays Daily News say the Jets have granted Vilma permission to seek a trade. Sorry to see this but he just doesn't fit into their system and it's time to move on. Hope they can get a 3rd pick for him. The injury comeback will be the key to what another team will be willing to give up for him. This is very much like when Sam Cowart came to the jets off of an injury. Good Luck Jon."
Ira Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 7:02am EST"Drew, Your are so right how people really think Mr. T or Eric will really give up any of their plans. It really makes me laugh. GO JETS!"
Mathew Flora Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 9:26am EST"Thats a bunch of Bull. I think if Vilma is traded, the Jets deserve at least a 2nd round draft pick or even a first. "
Ira Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 9:47am EST"The question is now that the Jets are willing to let Vilma seek a trade if the value is not there should they keep him? He should be worth a 2nd {if not coming off of an injury} but if they can't get more than a 3rd or 4th do they keep him? I can't see letting him go for a 5th or 6th. Hope Jags, Lions, Bengals or Saints step up and give a 3rd for him."
GIOVANNI LEONE Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 10:13am EST"I GOT TO AGREE WHIT YOU GUYS I BELIVE MR,T AS DONE A GOOD JOB DRAFTING PLAYER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS,AND I CAN SEE THEM HAVING A GREAT DRAFT THIS YEAR AS WELL,BUT I THINK THAT VILMA WILL BE GONE,I LOVE THE WAY HE PLAYS BUT HE JUST DOES'T FIT IN THE SYSTEM,I JUST HOPE WE GET AT LEAT 2 PICKS FOR HIM OR A 1ST ROUNDER,BECAUSE IN A4-3 SYSTEM HE WILL BE APROBOWLER AGAIN,A WHOULD HATE TO SEE HIM GO. "
Larry Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 10:21am EST"As far as info Tannenbaum and Mangini must have been siamese twins that were separated. There is no doubt they have made a few great draft picks. But if you try to build a team exclusively with the few draft picks you get youll have players retiring by the time youve got your team. He may just have well said"We're too cheap to spend money on quality veterns that want what theyre worth.""
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 10:32am EST"This team has talent it just is not being used correctly Rhodes & Revis are good players. Move back to a 4 -3 play Harris at middle linebacker play Barton & Vilma at outside linebacker they are small quick guys who fit this system better. Play Ellis & Robertson at defensive tackle, play Thomas & Coleman at defensive end have 4 guys rush the QB on every play. Fix the O line "
rudy Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 10:59am EST"Larry you are correct when you said that drafting just a couple of impact players in the draft will take centuries to build a football program. The Jet owner, GM & HC should all fire themselves from having any part of this team. Its a shame when the owner of a football franchise is not passionate about his team and more shameful when the guys he hired to run his organization are clueless."
rudy Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 11:09am EST"Lets not get carried away as to how well these guys have drafted. Only 4 impact players in last 2 years doesn't cut it in my book. I recognize that you are paid by the Jets organization but can you be a little more objective with your comments. IMO Tannenbaum & Mangini have both done lousy jobs 14-18 record after 2 yrs is nothing to write home about. How about the FA & Draft busts? "
Frank Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 12:04pm EST"Sorry guys I don't agree about the drafts. Look at what Parcells and Belichick and the other winning organizations have done. They stockpile picks they don't go in a draft and only make 4 picks. Mangini wants the 3-4 then trade Vilma, Ellis and D-Rob last year while they had value instead of forcing them in a system that doesn't suit them. Get rid of the players that don't fit your system."
Frank Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 12:10pm EST"And Drew before you start hoping up and down and screaming I do like Harriss and Revis but if you are going to trade picks to make the picks you made last year you need to acquire more of them and still make at least 6 or 7 selections. I want Tangini to trade Pennington, Coles, D-Rob, Ellis and Vilma so we can trade down and grab Long and maybe another impact player like they did last year. "
Drew Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 12:18pm EST"Trading Vilma would work out both ways. We are wasting Vilma's talent in the 3-4 something we will not change no matter how hard fans hope. I would love to trade Vilma to Denver for J Walker. They are both coming off subpar years and an injury. We need a #1 WR and they need a 4-3 MLB..... Please enough of killing Mr.T for Brick. Yes he has underachieved but he was rated by the whole NFL as a top5"
Drew Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 12:26pm EST"Again...just a short scouting report on J Long. He can come in tomorrow and be the captain and RT for this team. He is a true leader that can dominate in the run game. He can struggle with outside speed like most LT. He is different from Joe Thomas though (not as great an athlete) but is a beast in the run game. I do not think he will be there at #6. Tangini will get it right."
Ira Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 12:53pm EST"Rudy, Not every draft pick has to be an impact player. Mr. T has had 14 picks the last 2 years which has produced 4 starters plus 5 others who are big contributers. Leon, Brad, Drew, Eric Smith and Clemens will all help this team get back to winning games in 08. Leon has to be considered an impact player also."
Frank Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 1:06pm EST"I know this may not be realistic. If the Pats have not signed Moss and we won't know until the 29th I say go after him. I would love to see Clemens throwing 60 yard bombs to him. I am absolutely convinced Clemens will be a good QB he has Moxy, He is tough, He is mobile and most important showed come from behind ability. Give him time to pass and he has shown will make plays."
Kyle Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 2:56pm EST"No doubt the OL is broken. The failure of both QBs last year is mostly due to inadequate protection and the inability to run the ball. Overall I think MT and EM have done a good job with the draft. Brick will be better this year, I think he suffered a sophomore jinx last year, not to mention the loss of Kendall who was a big part of the OL the previous year. They need to do a much better job in FA"
Jason Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 4:23pm EST"I still say Vilma inside next to Harris is the right move in the 3-4; but if he does get traded, hopefully the Jets get some value. And I agree 100% that the Jets should go after Randy Moss. Get Long, D'Brick will come around this year, Thomas Jones will run better and we'll be in great shape. J!E!T!S!"
Frank Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 5:20pm EST"Jason, Vilma is too small and he needs space to operate he can not function in a crowd. Billick one year went to the 3-4 with Ray Lewis and it was awful they went back to the 4-3. Billick made the decision to create his defense around Lewis. Vilma is the same player. The Jets never get it right Vilma is the best player they have drafted in years and they have tossed him aside with Manigini's 3-4."
Dan Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 6:26pm EST"Agreed. The 3-4 was one of the worst things to happen to the Jets defense. I still dont understand how they just figure Vilma can do everything. He made himself comfortable in the 4-3, studied it and mastered it. Then in came the 3-4 and ruined his career. If they dont change the defense they might as well trade him. I would rather see him do well on another team than struggle on the Jets."
Larry Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 6:41pm EST"Sorry Frank I dont agree. Sure they stockpile their picks, but thats when they already have a stable core and system. They also arent afraid to load up with talent when it becomes available. Mangini has proven nothing to me yet about his abilities or his system. And he sure isnt Parcells or Belichick. He allowed a pathetic OC to run a pathetic O all year, in addition to his many questionable calls"
George P Said:
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 8:46pm EST"I have read on numerous websights that the Jets have given Jonathon Vilma permission to seek a trade. Although was a key component in the 4-3 defense, he is less effective in the 3-4. The Jets need a play make on both sides of the ball. This offseason i would like to see a Vilma for Chad Johnson trade. Chad wouild bring the intensity needed to win football games. Also, sign Asante Samuel. "
Adrian Said:
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 9:50am EST"Randy Sean Rogers just got released from the lions or wants out something like that, woudnt it be good if the jets can pick him up?"
Frank Said:
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 9:58am EST"Ah Larry what don't we agree on? I have said all along that Tangini has not done a good job from an overall perspective and I beleive that is what you are saying. I'd have more respect for them if they could make a decision. Mangini made the decision to employ a system that doesn't fit the personal. Logic dicates before you embarrass and diminish the value of your best players you trade them....."
Frank Said:
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 10:04am EST"Don't be so simple minded Larry. You accumulate picks and or players and then trade them for the players that fit your system. Tangini in their inexperience are trying to force square pegs in round holes and that is my major beef with them. They seem to be afraid to make the hard bold decisions to let players go. Ttruely great coaches will adapt and modify their systems to their star players."
Larry Said:
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 2:22pm EST"Frank, other than the simple minded crack, youre absolutely right. The point I'm trying to make is that they have shown they dont have the capacity to adapt and modify. My way or the highway only goes so far. He is not a great coach and never will be unless he starts doing a lot of things differently. It's cheaper and easier to tailor your plan to your players if you have the know how. He doesnt."
