01/17 — It was almost as if I had stumbled across Santa Claus filling a stocking hung by the chimney with care.
As I was leaving Weeb Ewbank Hall on Wednesday night, I noticed somebody silently, solitarily at work on the Jets' "Wall of Fame." That's an informal name for the wall just past the reception desk that is adorned with miniature jersey decals, one for every team MVP from every season since the Jets started life in 1960 as the Titans, 48 in all.
Including Leon Washington's No. 29, which the worker was putting the finishing touches on.
The artisan was my good friend Rob Krolick, a member of NCG, the New York City design and production company that helps us turn out our different publications, such as the annual Jets preview book and gameday programs, and maintains the wall that bears the heading "JETS MVPS THROUGH THE DECADES."
Krolick finished burnishing the lettering below the jersey, which reads "#29 Leon Washington RB/KR/PR." Thus Leon, the second-year multithreat back from Florida State, joins the likes of Bill Mathis, the Titans RB and the first so honored in 1961; multiple MVPs Joe Namath, John Riggins, Freeman McNeil, Al Toon and Mo Lewis; and four-time winner Curtis Martin, after whom the award is now named.
This is not a news flash, of course. Washington found out he'd won his teammates' vote as this year's most valuable Jet back in December. But now it's official. Leon's in the pantheon. Washington's on the wall.
Barnes to Buffalo
BuffaloBills.com is reporting that the Bills have signed free agent FB Darian Barnes, released by the Jets on Nov. 28.
Brooksie's Coach Takes the Prize
Washington and center Nick Mangold both had nominated their high school coaches for the annual NFL High School Football Coach of the Year award. But former Jets QB Brooks Bollinger, now with the Vikings, had the winning nominee. His high school coach, Mike Berg from Central High School in Grand Forks, N.D., was named the recipient of the award today.

Thu, January 17, 2008 - 12:30pm EDT"Randy, to be honest, Leon is one special player. He kept us in alot of ball games and is super explosive. Granted, hes no Devin Hester, but hes pretty dangerous himself. Hes got the acceleration and agility to be a great kick returner, and the patience to find the hole as a running back. As long as we got Leon, we got a weapon for the next 10 years."

Randy Lange Said:
Fri, January 18, 2008 - 10:04am EDT"Andrew, that's just the schedule rotation established by the NFL. The Patriots have the same four West Coast trips."

Fri, January 18, 2008 - 10:01am EDT"The Bills got themselves a good lead blocker for Lynch. He just wasn't the right fit for the Jets. See that Heimerdinger has taken the OC job with the Titans."

Fri, January 18, 2008 - 2:05pm EDT"Ira...Was anyone ever complaining about trading Herm for a 4th rounder?? I thought we robbed KC....... Leon is the returner next year. He did just as good a job (if not better) than J Miller and he saves a roster spot. Justin has got to get better at CB or he will be gone. His value went way down for us with the year Leon had.....Anyone have any idea will coach specials this year??"

Fri, January 18, 2008 - 5:38pm EDT"I just read that we have hired Bill Callahan as assistant head coach does that mean that Schottenheimer is on the way out ? And are we now moving to the west coast offense instead of the spread attack that we run ?"
Randy Lange Said:
Fri, January 18, 2008 - 7:04pm EDT"Tom, a news release announcing that head coach Eric Mangini has hired Bill Callahan as assistant head coach/offense is on the newyorkjets.com home page now."
Ira Said:
Fri, January 18, 2008 - 8:43pm EDT"Interesting move. With Tony Wise on his way out it sounds like Callahan will take over for him but with more responsibility. Lets see how he and Schotty work together. "
Ira Said:
Fri, January 18, 2008 - 8:51pm EDT"Drew, I agree with you. Bradway made a good move getting a 4th rounder for Herm. Bradway did take some heat from the fans and media for not getting more. I think he did well. I quess Callahan will also replace Westhoff as a coach who Eric can lean on for advice. Westhoff always seemed to be in on huddles with Eric during games. Callahan will take his place. Good hire."

Drew Said:
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 11:25am EDT"I love the Callahan hire. He did a really nice job coaching up the Oakland running game a couple of years ago. Plus his O-Line can protect the QB..Check the stats.... He took big-time heat at Nebraska for trying to run the West Coast offense instead of the spread option they have run for 1000 years. He was in a no-win there. Good hire getting a really good coach who needs a job to work with the OL"
Row Said:
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 1:49pm EDT"Would like to see Schotty fired soon. If Mr. T is so intent on saving money, why is he paying two OC's... I'd also like to hear more then one person agree with me on our first round pick. DESEAN JACKSON JR!!! "
Nep Oznat Said:
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 4:57pm EDT"The Callahan move indicates that Tangini see that Shottenheimer is not the answer. Thank God they realize it. I thought it was only the fans who could see this guy is overrated. Takes after his old man - as conservative as Rush Limbaugh! How many passes did he call this year past the first down marker? Two, maybe three? Welcome, Bill, and start warming up....."
Ira Said:
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 7:16pm EDT"Well with the last real week of football coming tomorrow here are my picks. Pats 38 - Chargers 17 and this is a tuff call but Packers 27 - Giants 24. Hope maybe the Jets can get back to playoff football for next year. This has been a long month for sure. GO JETS!"
Drew Said:
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 3:26pm EDT"Row...I have been trying to tell you but you continue to be stuck on D Jackson. He had a really bad year at Cal in 07. Made a couple of big returns but not much else. He will need a big combine to get into the 1st round. There is no way the Jets take him at #6. He is an undersized speed FL/WR. Nice player but he will not wear a Jet uniform unless we trade down...way down!! Sorry"
john Said:
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 8:09am EDT"We certainly do not need a small flanker with the #6 overall. If anything, a big WR but clearly the most pressing need is the down lineman on both sides of the ball. A 3-4 backer who can put pressure on the QB is also a need (can count on 1 hand the number of plays bryan thomas made this year and i am being generous). Either Long or the kid Gholston from OSU are the pick unless we trade down."
