File Under: Chad Pennington, New England, Tom Brady, Phil Simms, Lynn Swann, Jets Giants
01/16 — When a quarterback gets on a roll, it can be mind-numbingly beautiful if he's throwing bull's-eyes for your team and mind-blowingly frustrating if he's on the bad guys' side.
That's what I was thinking during Tom Brady's Saturday night fever as he pitched one strike after another. His passes were mostly short but highly effective and well-distributed as the Patriots moved the ball at will for most of the game in their 31-20 AFC Divisional Round triumph over Jacksonville.
Another thought was that this was déjà vu all over again for me. Brady's final line — 26-for-28 for a 92.9 percent completion rate that set the NFL's record for greatest accuracy in any game, playoffs or regular season — clinched it, since the playoff record he broke was Phil Simms' 88.0 percent 22-for-25 in the Giants' Super Bowl XXV win over Denver 20 postseasons ago.
I was in the Rose Bowl stands for that performance. As the editor of an independent Giants team paper, I got to sit in the auxiliary press area, actually just some rows of the cavernous stadium cordoned off from the 100,000 fans for the overflow media crowd. I sat next to Lynn Swann — yes, the Lynn Swann, just starting out on his broadcasting career and one of a cast of seemingly thousands that ABC had brought to the game.
It's on my own mental iPod, the memories of sharing some comments with Swannie that day as images of some of his memorable Super Bowl catches flashed by on the Rose Bowl videoboards, then returning to enjoying the rest of Simms' masterful slinging against the helpless Broncos.
It's the best passing performance I've ever seen in person, and it was the best I'd ever observed until Brady.
A subplot to TB's night was how he started against the Jaguars, completing his first 16 into the third quarter, for 147 yards and a touchdown.
As Jets observers, we've seen a few hot hands just like that in recent seasons. There was Glenn Foley going 14-for-14 in relief of Neil O'Donnell in 1997 against the Patriots, then Vinny Testaverde hitting 13 straight in the 1998 AFC Championship Game at Denver.
Chad Pennington has had a few streaks like that as well, most recently this season. In fact, his streak at Buffalo in Game 4 — 15-for-15, 162 yards, one TD — was very similar to Brady's vs. Jacksonville. Except that Chad's game didn't end quite as successfully.
Here are the eight 10-in-a-row passing streaks by Jets QBs since 2000, all interestingly occurring on the road (*playoff game):
| Year | Quarterback | Game | Cmp-Att-Yds-TDs | Final Score |
| 2002 | Chad Pennington | at DET | 11-11-94-2 | Jets, 31-14 |
| 2002 | Chad Pennington | at NE | 11-11-173-2 | Jets, 30-17 |
| 2003 | Chad Pennington | at MIA | 14-14-154-0 | Dolphins, 23-21 |
| 2004 | Chad Pennington | at SD | 10-10-100-2 | Jets, 34-28 |
| 2004 | Chad Pennington | at NE | 11-11-82-0 | Patriots, 13-7 |
| 2004 | Chad Pennington | at SD* | 10-10-134-1 | Jets, 20-17 (OT) |
| 2005 | Brooks Bollinger | at MIA | 10-10-75-0 | Dolphins, 24-20 |
| 2007 | Chad Pennington | at BUF | 15-15-162-1 | Bills, 17-14 |
And here are the six 10-for-10's or better by Jets opponents since 2000:
| Year | Quarterback | Game | Cmp-Att-Yds-TDs | Final Score |
| 2001 | Peyton Manning | at IND | 11-11-105-1 | Jets, 29-28 |
| 2002 | Daunte Culpepper | vs. MIN | 13-13-121-0 | Jets, 20-7 |
| 2004 | Tom Brady | at NE | 10-10-127-1 | Patriots, 13-7 |
| 2005 | Drew Brees | vs. SD | 10-10-163-1 | Chargers, 31-26 |
| 2007 | Tom Brady | vs. NE | 11-11-176-2 | Patriots, 38-14 |
| 2007 | Tony Romo | at DAL | 10-10-80-1 | Cowboys, 34-3 |

"Ira, Brady averaged 9.4 yards per attempt and 10.1 yards per completion. Factor out his 33-yard first completion to Laurence Maroney and his late 53-yard hookup with Donte Stallworth and his average per completion was 7.3 yards with a long of 14."

Wed, January 16, 2008 - 12:45pm EDT"The big difference is that Brady CAN beat you with the long ball if need be. Chad cannot. That simple. I'm a die hard Jets fan, but I am tired of everyone clinging onto Chad's completion percentage. Look at the bottom line: WINS! Put Chad behind the N.E's line and he'll complete almost every pass too. But defenses respect TB's deep ball so they're not always trying to jump the routes."

Wed, January 16, 2008 - 1:31pm EDT"Randy, Thanks for the info. Not taking anything away from Brady he is great and probably on his way to being the best QB to ever play in the NFL. But the Jags gave him all that underneath stuff and they were nothing more than layups to a player like him. Frank, Chad will be back in the playoffs next year but with a different team. Its not all his fault why the Jets had a bad year."
Frank Said:
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 2:59pm EDT"Correct, Ira. But it wasn't either QB's fault. The OL is to blame. And if next season comes down to another 'may the best man win' QB competition, I think Chad would win. He is, right now, the all around better QB. Hence why the Jets should pay the $ and keep him, backup or not. But I'd like to see KC perform with a better OL. Those hospital balls Chad lays out there are quite alarming."
Ira Said:
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 3:15pm EDT"Frank, Chad would win hands down. Clemens might be good but needs time to develop still. Chad will fetch a 3rd rd pick with no problem. Would love to see him back but i think the 2 sides have turned the pages and will go in different directions. Your're right i don't care who plays QB if they don't fix the o-line no QB will play well. They will sign 2 FA OL who will start for them. GO JETS!"

Wed, January 16, 2008 - 3:16pm EDT"I think we should trade Chad for a better QB.... It is def. time to change. We have some options out there and me as a die hard Jet fan feels we need to exercise that. If Vilma goes then CHAD better. Or that is just straight garbage. The man can't throw past 15 yards. it stinks. He was a great value to the team before he got hurt. And I hope that he will stay for more to come.. "

Wed, January 16, 2008 - 3:26pm EDT" While watching a Patriot game, I love to sit back and count, sometimes to 5 or 6 seconds and watch as Tom Brady completes yet another pass. Then I watch a DVR recorded Jets game and count to 2 and then see Chad get slammed to the turf. Chad is not even close to Brady I know, however if he had a solid O-line the Jets would be playoff contenders, and Chad would throw 25 TDs a year."

Wed, January 16, 2008 - 4:38pm EDT"I may be beating a dead horse but Pete Kendell & Jason Fabini started @ guard for the Skins, Kareem McKenize starts @ tackle for the Giants & Kevin Mawae starts @ center for the Titans. What do all of these teams have in common THEY ALL MADE THE PLAYOFFS THAT WHAT ! Why are we letting all of these good guys go the game in won & lost on the line. A good O line makes a ok QB/RB look great."
jim Said:
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 5:54pm EDT"I humbly suggest that Tangini remember that championships are won in the trenches. Get some nasty on both lines and maybe the team will be more consistant. Jones/Washington should be getting 3200-3800 yds per year, YES they are that good. Dont make me come over there and show you how to run a team !!"

Jared Said:
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 8:33pm EDT"Remember when we had the best o-line with Mawae, Fabini and Mackenzie? Chad wasnt throwing 25 TD's then, why would he do it now. If I remember correctly he was sitting on the sideline with 2 shoulder injuries. I love all Chad has done but its time to let him go and move on. D's know how to play him and his best years are behind him. Its time to shore up the O-line, the D and give KC a shot with TJ"

Wed, January 16, 2008 - 9:18pm EDT"we get it, brady is the best since sliced bread. I dont come to the site of my favorite team to hear how good brady is. We all know it. Put brady behind our o-line and see how good he is. These guys better open up their wallets this off season. Why did belicheck leave after one day on the job? two words, Organizational instability."

Thu, January 17, 2008 - 12:38am EDT"THIS is a comment to OUR HC Mangini. I hope you read this and if you dont I hope someone tells you! Get us a better Defensive Coordinator, period!! PRY other O-Lineman from other teams if you have to!!! STOP letting the Patriots show us up!!! You see that Miami is about to improve for the next season courtesy of the real "Mangenious" Bill Parcells who is both your and Bill Bellichicks mentor!! "

Thu, January 17, 2008 - 7:09am EDT"Randy, With all this Giants/Packers cold weather talk if i am correct the coldest weahter game the jets ever had had to be the game in 12/93 up in Buffalo when Blanchard missed 3 FG's. If he had made just 1 the Jets would have clinched a playoff spot. i think it was 0 with about a wind chill of about -25 to -30."
Randy Lange Said:
"Ira, the official characterization of the weather that day in Orchard Park was mostly cloudy, temperature of 9 degrees and, with west-northwest winds of 23 mph, a wind chill of minus-28."

Thu, January 17, 2008 - 8:30am EDT"I have made the observation all year that nay or our QB's would do well given the time that Brady has behind his O-line. Chad and KC will flourish if we get the o-line fixed. Bring in some proven vets and create stability. we have the talent to be in the playoffs."
Charlie Said:
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 10:32am EDT"Frank, I'm not sure how much opposing defenses are respecting Brady's arm, rather they're respecting Moss. Remember Chad was pretty good when he was throwing to Moss in college. Also, I think Chad can be a championship qb. Remember how long it took Manning to win a playoff game and get a def 4 SB, Elway didn't win b4 TD. Point is not to compare Chad to them, it's even the great ones need some help"
NorCal Jet Said:
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 4:24pm EDT"If you look at the 10 for 10 passing stats, Chad did not always have a large yardage stat. However, the Jets won their games. The reason for that is a balanced offense won the game. Offensive balance starts with the O-line and not Quarterback play. Fix the line and our QB's and RB's will take care of the rest. Go Jets!"

Thu, January 17, 2008 - 6:57pm EDT"two people that shouln't be on this team next year is Jon viliam and chad, whatever we can get for chad we should get it. chad is a good QB but he is old and dont have a strong arm and that just can't cut it now a days. clemons can be good we need to get him into a sorcing offense the only problem we had last year is that we couldn't sorce bottomline and i know the line and WR and playbook was it"
Row Said:
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 9:24pm EDT"Vilma is an all-pro linebacker. There's no reason to trade him, unless it's for Roy Williams or Chad Johnson. In my opinion, I would NOT trade him under ANY circumstances! Get rid of Chad, this "Who's going to be the QB this week" is bad for the team. It undermines the coaches...."
joe Said:
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 11:03am EDT"Pennington is one of those quarterbacks that can make a difference on a team. if mangini wants to be a successful coach, Pennington needs to be in the mix. he's a leader and can make plays when he is protected. clemens is not the answer now, maybe after when pennington retires as a jet."
Braeden Said:
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 12:05pm EDT"The Jets should definitely keep Chad, Kellen Clemens is not accurate. How do you bench a guy with a 68.8 completion percentage compared to Clemens 50 completion percentage. Clemens is not the answer. If you ask me, the Jets need a defense, explosive wide receiver (Donte Stallworth), and an offensive line to backup Chad, then the Jets might get a good 12 wins."
drew Said:
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 2:49pm EDT"clemons is the answer. give him a full offseason as starter and with chad as mentor hell do just fine. u want to point to a comp % 4 his first exp as starter then realize teams sent all they could at him knowing his inexperience would lead 2 mistakes, just like any other " rookie " qb"

Mon, January 21, 2008 - 5:34pm EDT"LET CHAD GO!!! With Clemens you have a guy who can throw the ball down field. The Jets finally made the change, but never changed the offense. You can't win games throwing 3, 4, 5, yard outs. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that against the Jets you put 8 in the box and have your corners sit and jump routes...by spreading it out you can even run the ball isn't that why we got Jones"

Tue, January 22, 2008 - 7:18pm EDT"I think Chad is one of the three best QB's in franchise history, but it's not about making the playoffs and sentimentality - it's about the Super Bowl. In the 39 yrs since SB III the AFC East has produced 15 SB teams (17 if you count the Colts): Bills 4, Dolphins 5, Pats 6, but the Jets ZERO! Stats don't always matter. Draft and start Brian Brom and the Jets will start scaring teams again! "

Tue, January 22, 2008 - 7:21pm EDT"We need chad back! he has gotten us out of some tough situations. hes ben the leader for years and hes done a good job too. im from indianapolis and its hard to see a jets game but the ones i've seen he did good. chad if you are reading this please stay in there and try to start again. and please eric mangenie dont trade pennington because you will be letting go a great QB. DONT TRADE CHAD!"
Wayne Said:
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 10:53pm EDT"Guys, we MUST have an O line to win. Time to throw & a line to open holes for our RB. Then we can control the clock, keep opposing offenses off the field and rest our D.I love CP but he's not the answer. The jury is still out on KC but he stood no chance this yr so it wasnt a fair test.He faced 8 men in the box wo an O line to protect him & hes still learning. Give him a FAIR chance. Lets go Jets!"
Charlie Said:
Fri, January 25, 2008 - 9:23am EDT"The Jets could very well have been in the mix this year had it not been for the penny wise and dollar foolish move the team made with Pete Kendall. With a great offensive line, the worst quarterback in the world can get a team to the playoffs. Chad is a great quarterback. He's smart, and after two major surgeries that he came back from, you can really say he's rugged. Build an O Line!!!"

Kudos to Chad for that streak and that Lion game in 02 he was lights out. Here's my question, what was the avg yard per throw for these passes completed by Brady? Most of them i say are for 6 yds or less."
