File Under: Eric Mangini, Anthony Clement, Jerricho Cotchery, Will Montgomery, Clint Oldenburg, Robert Turner
12/27 — The Jets locker room recently has taken on the feel of a truck stop, with wiry, muscular men coming and going every week. This can be a good thing if the bodies coming in are better than the bodies going out. As Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini said when they first arrived here early in 2006, they'll be looking under every rock all year long to find their kind of players, and the looking continues.
Perhaps they found some good ones in Robert Turner and Clint Oldenburg. Turner has been around the Jets since May, Oldenburg since September. Both were practice-squadders until being signed to the active roster a week ago, and both made their NFL debuts in O-line rotations at Tennessee. I visited with both in Wednesday's locker room session to check out the cut of their jibs (to paraphrase Montgomery Burns).
Turner, alternating with Will Montgomery at left guard, actually helped hold Pro Bowl DT Albert Haynesworth at bay Sunday, but he's a low-key guy who could pass for one of those thoughtful folksy, bluesy singers from his hometown of Austin, Texas, so he wasn't jumping for joy in front of his locker over his NFL unveiling.
"I think it was a good experience getting my feet wet," he said. "Obviously there are things I personally can improve on, whether it's the game plan or technique or just being a better football player. It was a good start. I wish we would've won, regardless of whether I played or not. That's the biggest thing is getting a 'W' and I think just self-improvement, everybody taking it one step at a time."
For those reasons, Turner had a few blocks he liked but he wasn't thinking in terms of a great play as the highlight of his big day.
"I don't think in a situation like this you can really look at an individual highlight when we have three wins on the season," he said. "It's more about getting better as a team within the scheme. That could be a personal highlight for me, getting better within the scheme to help the team."
Oldenburg has that same kind of mindset. But he had less exposure in coming in for Anthony Clement at RT than Turner had at LG, and one play stood out for him.
"Obviously, I gave up that sack," he said, reflecting on Titans DE Travis LaBoy's takedown of Chad Pennington in the second quarter, "and you never want to do something like that ever, especially not in your debut, so I'm disappointed in that."
But Oldenburg, the Patriots' fifth-round pick this year, is happy he's contributing to the Green & White program, something he didn't know he'd be doing in Nashville.
"When you're on the practice squad, that's always your goal, to get activated and play, but you never know when it's going to happen so you have to stay ready," he said. "I actually had no idea, but I was preparing myself for that every week. I was ready to go, and I appreciate the opportunity from Coach Mangini. Now I've got to go out there and do better."
That's part of the Mangini philosophy. If you stay, it's a good bet you'll play.
"I've liked both those guys," head coach Eric Mangini said at his Wednesday news conference. "We had a chance to bring them up, something he had done with [Jason] Trusnik earlier on and Chris Davis. Those guys had reached that point where I thought it was the right time for them.
"They both really have earned the opportunity," the coach continued. "It's more a function of them creating the chance to play, and then once they get in the game, seeing how well they're doing and evaluating that as you go."
Does that mean we'll see more of Turner and Oldenburg in the season finale vs. Kansas City? I really don't know, but I sense talking to them today that they have the right mentality for the Mangini plan.
"If they're going to bring you in," Turner said, "you've got to be ready to go, physically, mentally, emotionally and within the game plan itself."
J-Co One More Time
Another wrinkle to Jerricho Cotchery's eight-catch, 152-yard, one-TD game at Tennessee was his double centerpiece to the day, a pair of 40-yard receptions. The first was the 48-yard post in the second quarter, 35 of it in the air from Chad Pennington. The second was the 41-yard catch-and-run — mostly 37 yards of run — in the third quarter.
It was Cotchery's second double-40 game of the season (you remember Game 2 at Baltimore, of course). And it is sobering to consider that J-Co equaled the number of other double-40 games by all other Jets pass-catchers combined since 1995. Here's the short list of those performances:
| Year | Receiver | QB | Opp. | Yards |
| 1999 | Keyshawn Johnson | Tom Tupa | vs. NE | 50, 65 |
| 2003 | Santana Moss | Chad Pennington | at OAK | 65t, 43 |
| 2007 | Jerricho Cotchery | Kellen Clemens | at BAL | 44, 50 |
| 2007 | Jerricho Cotchery | Chad Pennington | at TEN | 48, 41 |

I mean if we had a kicker a few years ago we are in the AFC Championship and then who knows what happens.Chad never had the supporting cast.Somebody said it is now Clemens time,he is NOT THE ANSWER.The Jets better hope Chad doesn't come back to haunt them!"

Thu, December 27, 2007 - 11:12am EDT"well i think the jets need a complete overhaul for next season, they need to draft Darren McFadden because we just signed Kenyon Coleman and have Shaun Ellis for our defensive ends and then in the 2nd round, we could get a pass rushing linebacker like quieten groves so i don't think we should get Chris long because Darren is a great talent."

Im notdowning TJ becasue of his lack of TDs But how many times was he given tthe ball in the rz and not gone in. Julius Peppers may be avail for a trade. There will also be interesting FA... If we need oother players in draft we can trade up but cant pass on Mcfadden"

There is a reason these guys bounce around from team to team and practice squad to practice squad. It is time the Jets raise the bar, open up the wallet, and sign some quality linemen, if not, we can look forward to the same type of season next year."

Thu, December 27, 2007 - 12:23pm EDT"We dont need McFadden. We need to use our first round pick for the QB or OL positions. Thomas Jones hasn't had a great year, but Leon Washington has really proven himself on both the Special Teams and Offensive side of the ball. I would love to see Matt Ryan in the Green n' White and PLEASE, RE-SIGN VILMA"

Randy, whatever happened to Matt McChesney. He was a DL, then played in NFL Europe as an OL and then he disappeared. Want two free agents for 2008, how about RT Starks from Pittsburgh and OG Williams from Jacksonville. Or else draft OT J.Long from Michigan."

Thu, December 27, 2007 - 1:36pm EDT"Mangini always gives high charcter guys a chance, but guess what, your character isn't winning football games. STOP experimenting w/ the Lines, sack up and get some quality FA's. I guess it can't get any worse, so see what these guys are made of, is the mentality. But, management needs to be very proactive this off-season and get some talent on the lines. Draft Chris or Jake Long & FA FB for TJ"

Thu, December 27, 2007 - 1:57pm EDT"I would be shocked if the Jets sign Faneca. 1st off he will turn 31 next year. 2nd he wants to get paid 7 million per year which other FA guards have received. I can't see the Jets paying a guard 7 million per when they want players like LC to restructure who is due 5 million. Faneca also caused problems by knocking management and said he doesn't want to be captain. This is not what the Jets want."

KC may not be answer, but bottom line is he’s won twice as many games! CPs INT #s awful since surgery. Not the old CP; not the future. Trade him and others for picks, O n D line + impact and move on. This yr hurt by MT’s flub of Kendall, but on the right track. Back to 10-6 next yr."

Thu, December 27, 2007 - 2:26pm EDT"So who's been there for our team? Coles quit after Chad was benched. Jones ran for 1,000 yards without a lead block all season. Schottenheimer continued to call the out along with not running the ball on 3rd & short. If we pass on Jackson, a trade for R. Williams would be nice. Someone tell me why we NEED McFadden? As for the game we are going to win, where would that put us in the draft Randy?"
Randy Lange Said:
Thu, December 27, 2007 - 3:32pm EDT"Row, the Jets could draft as high as second behind Miami or as low as seventh, but all the Week 17 results have to come in first to determine strength of schedule."

Yes Chad hasnt been the same self , maybe its an OL who get trick when one goes dl around the other " hey where did he go..oh well not my problem"

You give Chad a strong running game and he will take a team to the playoffs every year. he has proved that.Bring on Clemens and lets hope he can get the job done. GO JETS!"

Thu, December 27, 2007 - 5:00pm EDT"It all starts with rebuilding both lines. Drafting skill-position players in the first 2 rounds looks glamorous, but the trenches are where championship teams are built. Select a "Long" in Round 1 (Chris or Jake, whichever is still available), then the best available lineman on the other side of the ball with the next pick. The secondary is showing promise; build on that, and stockpile picks. "
Chris Said:
Thu, December 27, 2007 - 5:32pm EDT"Chad is a above average quarterback with a below average arm. If we were a team with great players around Chad he probably could take us to the Super Bowl. The simple fact is the Jets are a slightly above average defense after the first 8 games and a well below average offense due to a very weak line. All and all the Jets need still have to strengthen its defense and rebuild the offensive line . "

Thu, December 27, 2007 - 6:12pm EDT"Being from Pittsburgh, i can tell you that Faneca will be a great attribute to the Jets o line, but he will ask for a ton of money. The steelers have already tried to sign him but he wants way too much. As for Cotchery, he is a great receiver and is very similar to Reggie Wayne of the Colts; a reliable # 2 that could be the main guy on almost any other team. "

Thu, December 27, 2007 - 6:43pm EDT"Its a sad day when your looking forward to the offseason instead of the next game .. If we lose this week . 1. Get Faneca. 2. If that is successful draft Chris Long ... if we cant sign Faneca get Jake Long. If both of those guys are gone ... consider Vernon Gholston (sp?) or Darren McFadden ... I think McFadden is a risky pick and would rather trade down for another 2 or 3. Look at R Bush."

Thu, December 27, 2007 - 8:07pm EDT"I know we need help on the O line & on D (Linebacker/D line) are we better of taking the best guy out there McFadden instead of taking a need & work on the line in free agency & later in the draft. I am not saying he is Adrian Peterson but the Vikings had a good guy in Chester Taylor they needed QB, WR, & secondary help they went with the best guy out there & trust me they are happy about it. "
josh Said:
Thu, December 27, 2007 - 8:42pm EDT"were not going to draft jake long because we just drafted d brick and chis long is already 26 years old so that frightens me, we should defiantly get Darren McFadden because he can do what Adrian Peterson did for the vikings and we could get lineman via free agency because there are many talented ones available and in the second round we could get a good pass rushing outside linebacker.jets=7picks"

How many costly picks did he have? How many FULL seasons has he played? I appreciate all he has done for us but hes time here is done, time to move on. Im not saying KC will be the next Namath but by now we should know that Chad isnt the answer either."

NEEDS: FB- not one worth mentioning with us, WR- chad johnson? i think b. berrian is mcareins all over. Keep LC!!! CJ+LC+Cotchery = dominant. RUN THE 4-3!!!"
Row Said:
Fri, December 28, 2007 - 2:13pm EDT"You guys stop talking about Adrian Peterson. He had one record breaking game and is still less then 100 yards over Chester Taylor last year. Look it up! Peterson has 1305 and Taylor had 1216 ironically the exact number T. Jones had last year. We don't need a back, we NEED a WR. Who had ESPN's college play of the year? Desean Jackson Jr. We just couldn't score a TD this year, I think DJ could."
Tom Spicer Said:
Fri, December 28, 2007 - 8:52pm EDT"Row if you look into all of the details Talyor rushed 303 times for 1,216 in a full season. Peterson rushed 227 times for 1,305 that is 89 more yards in 74 less rushes that is about 3 or 4 more games worth of rushes. How many more yards would he have if he did not miss 2 games, add what he does this sunday, & if he was the full time starter all year 400 or 500 more ? You tell me ! "
guitarman430 Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 2:29pm EDT"Jets need a couple of playmakers on both sides of the ball! The justs also need to get bigger and more physical. Needs are first and most important, free agent offensive lineman, followed by a pass rushing defensive end. We also need another wide receiver who play big. The current WR's are OK but they need a playmaker like a TO, Moss, Driver, CJ, etc. A good blocking FB who can catch passes! "
