File Under: Meadowlands, Herm Edwards, Leon Washington

12/26 — This week’s game marks the return of Herm Edwards to the Meadowlands. Edwards, the Kansas City coach who was head coach of the Jets from 2001-05, spoke with reporters about his five-year run during a conference call with Jets reporters this afternoon.

“You have to have energy if you’re going to be there and I’m an energetic person — at least I think so, anyway,” he said of coaching in NYC. “I enjoyed everything about it. I enjoyed the football team, the fans were good and the media was good to me. I have nothing bad to say, I really don’t.”

Edwards declined to discuss how his term ended here, saying, "It was an in-house situation.” Following the ’05 campaign, the Green & White received a fourth-round pick from the Chiefs in exchange for Edwards. They used that selection, 117th overall, on a Florida State RB named Leon Washington.

“I think both organizations have dealt with it in a fine way. They have a good football coach and hopefully I can become a good football coach for these guys here,” Edwards said. “Both teams last year went to the playoffs and that’s a good thing. This year both teams are struggling a little bit, so there’s some work to be done.”

The Jets qualified for the postseason following the 2001, ’02 and ’04 seasons. They also compiled a 2-3 postseason record under Edwards.

“I’m very pleased with the way we did some things there. We didn’t do everything right and we didn’t do everything wrong, but we had some good times there and had a lot of fun,” he said. “We played in some playoff games, won a couple and I think that’s very important.

“But we didn’t get the ring and that’s the shame of it, but we did everything we could do to try and get there. The players did a great job and the coaches did a great job of coaching.”

You’ll be able to access Coach Edwards’ full transcript on newyorkjets.com later today.

"Wow things are getting fiesty in here- I guess that's what happens when a 10-6 team only manages to beat the dolphins twice and upset the Steelers for 3-12/13 record. Can't we all get along? 3 wins with no major injuries is inexcusable, especially following a 10 win season. Mike T, Mangini, Sutton, & Shotty need to sack up. Shotty in particular. Worst Redzone offense I've ever watched-pathetic!"

"Brandon.. It seems that you have blind love for Chad. That's understandable since he put the Jets back on the map the last 8 years. I get it..The problem is you talk in circles. You say we have not been good since Namath but them talk about the playoff games Chad played in. Make up your mind... By the way Chad played awful in the Pitt game. S Moss return, BIG Int for TD and D play great not #10!"

"I know Chad didn't have a spectacular game, but i was there and remember him marching them down the field twice for game winning oppurtunities which would have eliminated is bad play. When i mention the Jets not being good, i mean they are playoff bound but never have the full potential to be a superbowl contender aka not the top dog in the afc, and never will be as long as the pats are here!"
