File Under: Eric Mangini, Laveranues Coles, Kellen Clemens, Brandon Moore, Will Montgomery, Clint Oldenburg, Robert Turner
12/24 — On this day before Christmas, Jets head coach Eric Mangini held a short teleconference with reporters. The QB topic is always a hot one and Mangini was asked if it was important for the Jets to get another look at Kellen Clemens when the Jets host the Chiefs in their regular-season finale.
“You’d like to see him be able to play if he can play,” Mangini said of his second-year passer. “But the important thing is that he is able to play at a level that gives us the best chance to win and that’s what I’m going to gauge throughout the week.”
Clemens, who suffered a rib injury against the Patriots and was limited at practice, backed up Chad Pennington on Sunday in Nashville as the Green & White lost another close one.
“He made a lot of progress last week, which was why he was at the two-spot,” said Mangini. “We’ll see how he does this week and make a decision later in the week.”
Pennington had success moving the Jets at times, but he threw two costly interceptions and was under duress the entire game. The Green & White, who rotated youngsters at LG (Will Montgomery and Robert Turner) and also gave rookie Clint Oldenburg some time at RT, allowed the same number of sacks as they scored points.
“The sacks that we gave up were a group effort,” Mangini said. “It wasn’t a function of just those two guys at all. There were multiple guys involved.”
Rotation is nothing new for the Jets. On defense, the Jets like what they’re getting out of DT Sione Pouha. The 6’3”, 325-pounder led the club with eight solo tackles yesterday as the Jets held the Titans to 273 yards.
“He had a really outstanding game,” said the second-year head coach. “I’ve liked Sione’s progress for a long time.”
But Mangini was not happy with an unsportsmanlike-conduct infraction called on RG Brandon Moore in the third quarter. Following a 41-yard catch-and-run from Jerricho Cotchery, Moore thought his teammate had taken a late hit and he made that clear to the Titans. Unfortunately, the Jets were forced back 15 yards after the walkoff and they were unable to finish the drive with points.
“We had the ball first down at the 26-yard line before the penalty,” Mangini said. “Regardless of what your perception is, it’s what’s called.”
After placing Laveranues Coles on injured reserve Saturday, Mangini expounded upon a discussion he had with LC.
“We had a great conversation and I thanked him for all he did this year on the field and off the field. It was a difficult season,” Mangini said. “He did a really amazing job being a first-time captain, the way he represented the guys and the way he took that role on and was exceptional at it.”
The players have Christmas off since the holiday falls on a Tuesday this year. Mangini and the coaching staff will put together the game plan tomorrow, but the Jets’ leader was looking forward to a Christmas Eve at home with family and friends.
Happy Holidays from all of us here at the Jets to you and yours.

Mon, December 24, 2007 - 6:43pm EST"I really do hope that Clemens can play this week. Chad's father was quoted in a Nashville paper saying hi son wants to move on to another team so he can be a starter and also Jets management are looking to go in a different direction from Chad. Just hope they can get a 4th rd pick for him. I expect Clemens to be the starter and the Jets will sign a veteran to compete with Clemens next summer."

Tue, December 25, 2007 - 12:51am EST"looks like Chad is a gonner in 2008, with the offense so bad, look for the Jets to use there first two picks in the 2008 draft on any of the following postions QB/RB/OL"
Thomas Spicer Said:
Tue, December 25, 2007 - 8:44am EST"Xavion in your post you spoke about Kellens int in New England if you were watching the game you would have seen that he was getting slammed to the ground when that happened so that is not his fault THAT IS THE O LINES FAULT! Chad has had his shot he could not do it it is Kellens turn. You can not judge Kellen off of 6 or 7 starts Chad has been in the league for years HE CAN NOT DO IT!"

Tue, December 25, 2007 - 10:00am EST"I think the Jets can get a higher pick than a 4th rounder for Chad, hes still a quality starting QB thats 31 years old. Some team would want him. I hope Clemens can start, just to see him more. We really need line help, hopefully we can get Alan Faneca and draft Chris Long with the 1st round pick. Then get Ghosder Cherilus the RT from BC with our 2nd round pick. WE would be set on both sides."
Britfan Said:
Tue, December 25, 2007 - 10:44am EST"Chad is a great guy but not the future. Opposition know that they can cheat up to the line of scrimmage against him. Build the O-line in the draft. It all starts there. When we got TJ he was good for eight years or more so let's get him six yards per pop. Most QBs will look good behind a powerful running game. Even better if their D has to honour the deep ball. And your D gets to rest a lot."
Frank Said:
Tue, December 25, 2007 - 12:02pm EST"Ridiculous that Mangini is not laying blame on poor pass protection. The left side starting with Brick and his missed assignments and getting bull rushed was awful even when they tried running to the outside on the left they were losing yards. D is playing much better I hate the short yardage play calling it's the only area we are not improving. Team needs to spend major mohlah on the O-line."
Frank Said:
Tue, December 25, 2007 - 12:07pm EST"They should sit Clemens why risk injuring him further. They should play all the stringers and see what they've got. Unless I've missed something why hasn't Bender played? is he hurt? At this point I'd rather they lose the game and try for maximum draft position. I'd hate to have NE picking ahead of us. I do beleive they have the first Niner's pick."

Wayne Said:
Tue, December 25, 2007 - 12:22pm EST"IF Chad gets traded & the Jets don't impove big time on the O line, any QB will FAIL miserably and it will be another abysmal season in 08. Same for the D line. We have about 15 qaulity players to build around & if Mangini thinks he has more,he's grossly overestimated the talent on this team. I think I speak for all Jet fans by saying we're tired of losing and being the NFL laughing stock. "

Mr. T should give Mangini an ultimatum, beat the Chiefs who have no RB or QB, or YOU'RE FIRED. I remember a good quote from 2 years ago. "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME", says Herm. Tue, December 25, 2007 - 7:42pm EST"It has taken a while but S Pouha has really played well. I thought we reached for him in the 3rd round a couple of years ago but he has shown up. If 3-4 is our defense this guy is the right fit. He eats up blocks and get to the RB. He will not flash great plays like D-Rob but shows up every play. i hate to admit it but T Bradway drafted some decent players"

If i am not mistaken, Chad stepped in and threw 22 tds and only 6 ints in that season!!! If he played the entire season he may have been MVP!"

Harris and Revis had a great rookie year-look forward to building the D behind them and Rhodes. Wouldn't be surprised to see Parcells try to grab a handful of JETS like Penny, LC, even Vilma? Would love to see SHOTTY leave & draft Chris Long or McFadden"

This kid broke almost every NCAA passing stat. He is simply awesome. He can pick a flea off a dog from 40 yards away. Please take him in the draft Jets. Neither current QB on the the roster is the long time answer. Please realize that. "

Wed, December 26, 2007 - 2:52am EST"We need leaders on the field. The Jets play with no fire! The only time we play with intensity is when we are underdogs in the point spread or one of the players reading a ridicule quote. We have some, for ex Kerry Rhodes. When i read his comments in the paper in read between the lines that he is mentally prepared. Underacheivers but i luv the Jets. Oh Yea! We need a QB and faster outside LB's"

Wed, December 26, 2007 - 7:05am EST"Hey Thomas Spicer My point was they both made poor decisions. kellen should have either taken the sack or gone deep with the ball. Chad has No excuse for the underthrown ball and never saw Bullock in the endzone. even with all the mistakes going around I still always felt chad gave us the better chance to win. He was the better QB"
DaveB Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 8:09am EST"To answer your Q: yes i do watch the jets EVERY SUNDAY FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS!! I may be hard on Chad because i watch other Quarterbacks with the same or less protection from the o-line get there teams in the end zone, Chad's percentage isn't even close? and now with the addition of the xtra weak arm, it has become impossible to score, say what you want, WE CAN'T MOVE THE CHAINS WITH HIM AT QB!!"
Ira Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 8:14am EST"To be fair with Jones only having 1 TD look at Willie Parker. He was a 1300 yd runner and had only 2 TD's. If the Jets decide to pass on McFadden if he is available that would be fine. The o-line,pass rusher and a D-line player are their most pressing needs so when Lamont Jordan gets released by the Raiders the Jets should sign him to be their short yardage and goaline RB."
DaveB Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 8:25am EST"Sure i'll tell you what we need to do turn this team around: 1. spend some $$ on markee players an stop relying on backup players to propose as starters.ex: V Hobson, E. Coleman, B Moore, J mccarens, Baker etc. 2. Get a coach that demands respect from the players, E Mangini is young and unproven, when Parcells was here the players would run through a wall for him, Mangini does not have that effect"
Ira Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 9:25am EST"DaveB, I don;t know which games you are watching but the players have given Eric everyting they have. If you don't have the talent at certain postions this is what you get. They lost 7 games by 7 pts or less. This team has never given up. I didn't hear anybody complaining last year year about Eric be young and unproven when he went 10-6. This is very fixable. My major concern is Clemens."
Brandon Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 9:38am EST"Right now we are not a good football team. The one thing I can say is I like the direction we are heading. Say what you want but Coach and Tanny have selected some valuable players to build a team around. If they continue on that course I believe we could have a GREAT team in years to come. However it takes time to get to that point. In 2 years we will be laughing about how bad we once were. "
Thomas Spicer Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 9:59am EST"I just wanted to say to everyone I do like Chad I have his jersey I love the guy we need more guys like him. But long term I think we would be better off with Kellen at QB. Shawn Faulkner Colt plays for Hawaii & we have a center Nick Mangold is our best O lineman by far center is not our problem. I would love to see the Jets draft McFadden but that is not going to happen they will draft OL, DL, LB"
THOP Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 10:20am EST"Chad = 1-8 Kellen = 2-4, Chad has many more years experiance, and is unable to do anything with it. Kellen has had a lot of beautiful passes dropped this year. Probably do to the recievers having such soft hands from catching Chad's passes. Chad is not the answer, Kellen may not be the answer. We can't know until we give him enough time. I wonder how Payton Manning did in his first six starts."
Drew Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 10:56am EST"Dave B.. I like most of what you said but to say the players dont respect Mangini is laughable. They had no problems respecting him last year when he cleaned up the mess Herm left and went 10-6. Players were out of shape because they "respected" Coach Herm...You will see alot players and media guys loving Herm up this week. How soon they forget what he pulled. Trust Tangini and draft Jake Long!!"

Wed, December 26, 2007 - 1:23pm EST"I just want to say Desean Jackson is listed at 6'0 and 170. Any receiver would be an improvement to our lack of a real receiver corps. If you guys didn't know, the average corner is 5'8 or 5'9. Steve Smith has had 4 1000 yard seasons and is 5'9. S. Holmes is the same type of receiver as Jackson and has averaged in the 800's his 1st two seasons, 7td's this year. Do we have a receiver with 7 TD's?"
Steve Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 2:55pm EST"In case we have forgotten a FA is just that! They decide where they want to go. What are the chances that we will have FAs lined up to play for us after a 3 or 4 win season,a coach that has the reputation of EM and a cash tight mgt. team that thinks people should want to play for a winning org. for nohing. If Clemens fails it will take yrs. to fix this mess. Pats,Bills & Fins (Parcells)are better"
Steve Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 3:14pm EST"DaveB, Whats wrong Santa not leave ya anything for christmas! You must be like the Scarecrow in the Wizard of OZ when it comes to football. Honestly i wish you could QB the Jets just one game! By the way we don't agree on CP & I bet alan Faneca and Haynesworth would love to come and play for the jets LOL. Maybe Miami but not for Mangini. We will continue to get 2nd tier FAs as long as TANGINI stays"
TAtlas Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 3:59pm EST"I don't know what the Jets . I watch them every weekend go to as many games as I can. I think they need to trade away for a QB. Unless Kellen can show something that is gonna be extraordinary. They should be thinking QB right now. If you are throwing "The Chad" lobs your recievers will get injured because they only have a second to react when they land. Time to reamp the offense. "
DaveB Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 4:18pm EST"Hey " Ira" i watch the same game you watch!. losing 7 games by 7 points or less only means that we don't have a player that can make a play to decide the game, if so, where was the big throw by your boy Chad when needed? or what about a long TD run by Jones? or a big play by Coles? or a big INT run back for a TD? ? take away kick returns by L. Washington and we have no big play highlights..get it?"
Rob Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 4:27pm EST"THOP really interesting point about receivers having soft hands because of Pennington. But I'm not sold on Clemens either...again its hard to evaluate his potential with this line. And may be thats why Schotty looks bad too because his plays never develops. Whatever the case may be, we need a solid line going in next year."
Drew Said:
Wed, December 26, 2007 - 6:48pm EST"Row...His name is L Coles and he has missed 3 games do to injury. I think we need a explosive WR also but D Jackson will go in the 1st round. We have much more pressing needs."
Rich Said:
Fri, December 28, 2007 - 6:54am EST"Everybody is blaming the players how about the coaches? The offense runs the same lame 3 players over and over. Every jets fan knows what Iam talking about. 1. 5 yard out that get picked and ran back for TD. 2. Brad smith option that works the 1st time you do it not 15 times in a row. 3. The same draw play to TJ or LW. Please stop using high school playbook and be more creative. "
Blame the HEAD Coach/ ERIC MANGINI Said:
Fri, December 28, 2007 - 4:28pm EST"RICH is right. Everybody is blaming the players....how about blaming the coaches. I have been saying this for a while now. What about putting some blame on the HEAD COACH Eric Mangini. Mangini is the one who makes the final decision. The HEAD Coach and the GM are the ones who pick which players play on this team. Blame them for bad EVALUATION of players ability. "

Jeremy Said:
Mon, December 24, 2007 - 4:46pm EST"Who really cares at this point, neither one is the solution nor problem, both Lines are pathetic and team can't win by giving up 6 sacks a game and being 30th in run D. If the JETS don't actively pursue Lineman and have a valuable draft it will be really hard to watch any games next year. I can see them drafting McFadden simply b/c he's the best on the board, but realistically we need Long at DT"
