12/09 — The big pregame news at the Meadowlands for the Jets this afternoon is that all the Green & White's starting wide receivers are active.
That means Jerricho Cotchery, who suffered a right index finger injury in practice two weeks ago, and Laveranues Coles, playing with a sore ankle, could be reunited in the starting lineup. LC and J-Co haven't been starting and healthy since Game 8 against Buffalo at the Meadowlands. For those who want to feel the pain, here are the starting WRs in the previous four games:
Game 9 vs. Washington — Cotchery, Brad Smith and Justin McCareins (Coles IA, concussion)
Game 10 vs. Pittsburgh — Coles and Cotchery (but Coles injured his ankle on the second offensive play)
Game 11 at Dallas — Cotchery and Smith (Coles IA, ankle)
Gaeme 12 at Miami — Coles, McCareins and Smith (Cotchery IA, finger)
Cotchery has come out and is running around with his teammates. He's wearing something under his right glove, perhaps a device to immobilize his finger, perhaps wrapping, but it doesn't appear bulky. What is interesting is that Coles has not yet appeared on the field, and now all his teammates are involved in stretching.
We'll know soon how close if the C & C boys are reunited in the starting lineup and how healthy they are in helping Kellen Clemens in his sixth pro start against the Cleveland Browns' 32nd-ranked defense in both yards and points allowed.
The Jets' inactives for the Browns have just been announced: WR Chris Davis, CB Andre Dyson, DL Mike DeVito, O-linemen Jacob Bender and Adrian Jones, TE Jason Pociask and DL Kareem Brown. Marques Tuiasosopo is the third QB for the 13th game this season.
Cleveland's IAs are CBs Kenny Wright and Ricardo Colclough, O-linemen Isaac Sowells and Greg Eslinger, WR Travis Wilson, LB David McMillan and DL Louis Leonard, with Ken Dorsey as the third QB.
One week after their Miami success in their Titans throwback uniforms, the Jets are in their green-green uniforms, the look that set the stage for their previous victory three weeks ago against the Steelers. A review of the double-green record: The Jets were 5-5 in those threads from 2002-05 and 1-1 since 2006 under head coach Eric Mangini.
It's hard to say if the weather will be a factor in today's late-afternoon game. The skies over North Jersey are blue-gray with clouds and heavy rain is forecast for early this evening. But the moisture has held up so far, and those legendary Meadowlands winds have yet to stir the orange wind strips on the tops of the goalposts.
Perhaps that bodes well for the kick coverage teams keeping today's dynamic kickoff returners, Leon Washington and Joshua Cribbs, in check with high, deep kickoffs.
The referee for today's game is Walt Anderson. Heather Kreuzman, the Jets' National Anthem Contest winner from Indianapolis, sounded in fine voice during her own pregame warmups. Kickoff in less than an hour.
