12/04 — Who will be the Jets' defensive player of the week? That's the award presented by head coach Eric Mangini to a deserving defender following a victory. Mangini didn't hand out any of his player awards Monday because he wanted to notify his players of the winners first, and since they had been given off till Wednesday, many players had scattered.
I can't possibly handicap this week's winner because there were many candidates in the wake of the 40-13 squishing of the Fish.
Safety Kerry Rhodes had a key interception at the Jets 9 late in the first half, also broke up another pass, was in on 1.5 tackles for loss/no gain and had four tackles.
DT C.J. Mosley has been coming up big lately. He had a sack of John Beck, his third game in a row with a QB drop, on the play executed his second strip sack in two games, and was also in 1.5 tackles at or behind the line.
But it's a weekly occurrence that David Harris is up for NFL honors. In fact, I tabbed Harris as one of the four Jets of the Game for fans to vote for on newyorkjets.com immediately after the game. He led the Jets with eight tackles (six solo). And in the third quarter he picked up his third sack in five games and with it his first NFL strip-sack, separating Beck from ball and pouncing on it for the recovery to set up the Thomas Jones touchdown drive.
It's becoming old hat for the new guy. He's been nominated for the third time as the Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week, and you can vote for Harris or his four competitors in the coming days on nfl.com.
Harris already has one award under his belt this week and that's as the nflplayers.com Rookie of the Week. No fan voting here, but you can read web editor Mike Donnelly's thorough David Harris feature here.
One of many offensive gadget plays that I wanted to mention as I hit the pause button in the middle of my weekly video breakdown of the game was one of Brad Smith's finest moments as a Jet, the 19-yard touchdown reception, 18 of which came after the catch, to put the Jets ahead of the 'Fins to stay, 17-13, with 2:39 left in the first half.
This really was nifty because Smith initially lined up in the left slot between WR Wallace Wright (who saw his most action and had his most catches as a Jet) and TE Joe Kowalewski. Then Smith went in motion across the formation, then doubled back — but only to an off-set halfback position next to Kellen Clemens in the shotgun.
This is not normally a spot that Smith is in for the start of a play, and I think it confused the Dolphins. Perhaps nickelback Travis Daniels had Smith as long as he was a flanker, but when he became a back, it looked as if Channing Crowder picked up Smith responsibility. What are the odds of the 245-pound LB staying with the 210-pound QB/WR/HB/kick cover man?
All that Clemens had to do was get the ball to Smith. He faked the handoff going the other way to Leon Washington, perhaps buying a crucial split-second on the Dolphins' pressure. Throwing off his back foot, KC found Smith with a dart and Smith easily ran past Crowder and beat the Dolphins DBs to the right pylon. Outstanding design, outstanding execution ... outstanding play.

I predict that he will be the NFL defensive rookie of the year. Hes got my vote keep up the good work David."

However, it seems in his pro career he plays when he feels like it. I've seen him miss a lot of key KO return blocks. I've also seen a lot of drops or INT's when thrown to him. I'd like to know the stats on that. Very exited to have him here, lot of talent. Keep coaching him! Draft Rucker!"

Some road graders on the o-line and big stuff on d-line is what we need in draft/free agency. Get a superstar wideout and were back in this next year. Hope they end Pats streak or Pats go all the way and Fins go winless would be cool."

You guys already know how I have felt about Harris since April so I will not spend the rest of this post bragging about him....again! For all you fans who take shots and Mr.T, check his 2yr. record. This guy has cleaned up our salary cap and drafted...Mangold,L Washington, Revis, Harris,4 sure fire future ProBowlers..Nice!"

Kellen, kellen, kellen. i don't like the guy. when a majority of the jets fans were calling for chad's head because of his arm strength, i felt that kellen took advantage of that. when mangini pulled chad, kellen came in and pegged a couple of balls that were clearly impossible to catch. he showed chad up. chad, vilma gone. mangini set them up for failure"

Tue, December 4, 2007 - 8:59pm ET" I would say Harris gets the D player of the week. They all deserve it but Harris was a real force. As for that Smith TD catch and run, Schotty really has to find ways to get Smith the ball so he can make plays with his running ability. He isn't going to go in traffic and make big plays. Get him in space and watchout. I think the Jets will upset the Browns this week. Pay back for last year."

This is not about the Win against Miami but why did it take them so long. Note to Sutton, get C.J Mosely more involved and forget commitment to the 3-4, and BLITZ BLITTZ BLITZ "

Wed, December 5, 2007 - 7:45am ET"I agree Randy. David Harris is becoming a big problem for other teams. Hopefully Harris will continue to show improvement, and become our own personal version of LT. This may be an early prediction, but Harris is all over the field, and deserves the credit. Soon other teams will be shaking in their cleats when Harris, Revis, and Rhodes mature. Teams will cry with fear! Harris, Revis and Rhodes OH MY! GO JETS!"

Wed, December 5, 2007 - 4:42pm ET"ENOUGH OF THE CHAD TALK! He had his chance, he didnt get it done. The o-line hasnt changed since the start of the season so stop using that excuse! The running game is better now because we have a QB that can stretch the field! Chad is gone, get over it! And dont hate on KC yet, hes only in his 6th start and already has more wins this season than CP. Give him time to progress, he has great skill."

Thu, December 6, 2007 - 10:44am ET"Clemens is our guy...he has done a great job and has allowed the jets to finally hold on to a 4th quarter lead...but for gods sake.....LEAVE LEON WASHINGTON IN THE GAME AS LONG AS POSSIBLE!!! Dont take out your playmaker...Thomas Jones is good but i think hes a short yardage RB...Leon has the explosivness to make big plays....not just 3 or 4 yard carries...the most agile RB in a long time for us."

Thu, December 6, 2007 - 3:01pm ET"It's hard to believe that there are still some Jets fans out there who believe that CP did a better job than KC. Knowledgeable fans know that its not always about the numbers, its about the confidence of the players. Since KC has been at QB, the Jets overall play has gotten much better and they are now competitive. CP is not a starter and would not start for any team in the NFL. "
Jared Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 1:00pm ET"throw your stats between CP and KC out the window. CP has been a starting quarterback for years. This is KC's 5th start! I'm so tired of u "fans" expecting KC to automatically come out and play like Joe Montana. Give the kid some time and realize that he has the talent to be a good player. In 5 starts, he progressively shows improvment. He is our future, get used to it and support him!"

Tue, December 4, 2007 - 5:55pm ET"Harris has been a stud from the start same w/ Revis. I really wouldn't mind seeing the JETS trade Vilma for D or O lineman or a tall WR. Can't wait to see what we do in the Draft. I've already voted for Leon and Rhodes for the Probowl, but will certainly have to add Harris and Revis if they up for a vote. Harris is deserving of D Rookie of the Year. Great draft, hope we do it again. GO JETS "
