File Under: Darian Barnes, Manny Collins, Sean Taylor, David Ball, released Dolphins
11/28 — One significant piece of housekeeping announced by Eric Mangini at the top of today's news conference is the release of FB Darian Barnes. The Jets signed Barnes in the off-season as an unrestricted free agent to be a big bopper in leading Thomas Jones in the running game.
But that hadn't worked out. Barnes wasn't playing on every down on offense, didn't play special teams, and as a result he was inactive for six of the Jets' 11 games this season, including the last four in a row.
"Darian did a good job while he was here and I wish him well," Mangini said. "The way it worked out is there were other guys in those positions [on special teams]. If you're not considered there on a regular basis, it makes it hard to be active consistently."
No early word on if the Dolphins, hosting the Jets on Sunday, are reaching out to sign Barnes, who played the previous two seasons with Miami.
With backup fullback Stacy Tutt on injured reserve, the Jets have been using their tight ends when they want a big body in front of Jones. Joe Kowalewski got his first pro start vs. Pittsburgh at FB and both Joe-Ko and Jason Pociask lined up or motioned to FB at Dallas.
Mangini also announced a practice-squad switch, releasing CB Manny Collins and signing David Ball — no, not D-lineman Dave Ball, who was with the Jets in 2005-06, but the rookie free agent WR from New Hampshire who had been with the Chicago Bears into the regular season.
The head coach started his news conference off with a reference to Washington safety Sean Taylor, who died Tuesday of a gunshot wound during a burglary at his home.
"He was a great, talented young man, and it's sad when these things happen," Mangini said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to the whole Redskins organization."

It was nice to have a local product in the system, however, I practically never saw him play. Was he hurt? You cannot be "effective" if you are not on the field. You certainly cannot blame him for TJ's problems. I am sure someone will pick him up"

I'm a fan of the Jets all the way over in England and think they're in need for some big changes!Last season they where 10-6-0 and now they are 2-9-0 and have no chance of making into through to the play-offs. They're next up coming game against the dolphins is gonna be a good opportunity to show the fans and the players that they are a good team and need to show it! "

Randy Lange Said:
"Rick, Kellen's presser is scheduled for 2:50 p.m. It will be live on newyorkjets.com and I'll have a story on Kellen later in the afternoon."

But i have to say i really liked R.Anderson and the way he caught the ball out of the backfield. In 2000 he was a Pro Bowler and caught 88 passes for 853 yds to lead the Jets in catches. Interesting in that year Curtis was 2nd in catches with 70 followed by Chrebet 69, Ward 54, and Coles with 22."
Randy Lange Said:
"Ira, not to blow my own horn (or maybe I am), I remember Richie Anderson's first and only Pro Bowl season well because I was the first person to inform Richie that he had made the Pro Bowl."

I was there and felt it was the most amazing experience of my life, even if i didn't know who to support!!! Also, there are one or two bright spots that still shine out this year; the play of our two defensive rookies, Harris and Revis, whilst veterans have disappointed, any ideas why??"
Randy Lange Said:
"Josh, I was happy for the success of the Giants-Dolphins game in London. I always thought England was a great market for the NFL, wondered where the interest went, then realized it's still there. As for the personnel evaluation, I'll leave that to your fellow commenters, although Darrelle Revis and David Harris have certainly been bright lights this season."

Right now mangini is trying to find some combination that will work. Just rollin dice. we will see what happens."

The jets need something and they seemed to do well when he was here. It's getting hard to be a Jets fan these days. Parcells back in the mix would give us a little bit of confidence int this team again."

Wed, November 28, 2007 - 8:51pm EDT"Kudos to "Tangini" for the 07 draft. Both Revis and Harris look like future stars. Stuckey could also be a keeper, (if he can stay healthy). We need another successful draft in 08. Since we have so many holes to fill,we could go for best available athlete, but it is crucial that the lines get fixed..."

Wed, November 28, 2007 - 11:23pm EDT"Randy...Didn't this D Ball break all type of receiving records in college? I remember he broke one of Jerry Rice's records?? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I also remember this guy ran a bad 40 at the combine 4.6-4.7 range. If so he is a project.....Feel bad for Barnes. I thought he would help this year."
Randy Lange Said:
"Drew, David Ball's 58 career touchdown receptions at New Hampshire broke Jerry Rice's Division I-AA record, and his 23 100-yard games tied Rice's record."

Do you recall how bad of a salary cap problem we were in 2 years ago? He drafts very well and stole T Jones for nothing. Mr T has done a great job. He might have mishandled the Kendall problem but get over it. Get your facts straight already Row.. please"

Check out this link of the Bears preseason game where he shows it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltfrJejyusI With the injuries at WR I wouldn't be surprised to see Ball making some plays in a couple of weeks. Thu, November 29, 2007 - 3:36pm EDT"David Ball did have a slower 40 time but that’s only because he was injured, rumors have it that he’s now running in the low 4.5’s…….I got that from a very reliable source. He also was only about 30 yards short of breaking Jerry Rice’s career yard mark too. The Jets just made the best decision in franchise history picking up Ball. There isn’t a D-back in the league that can cover this kid, and they don’t call him Uncle Ben for nothing………Uncle Ben meaning the white Rice……. If the Jets feel like winning the last few games this season it’s a good idea to get this kid on the field and watch him make people look stupid."

And you have him pegged correctly, not fast but as good a pair of hands as a human being can have to catch a football. He leaps well, times the arc of the falling ball very well and can catch in a crowd. And a very nice person to have as a teammate. Saw him play 21 times in College. Pete"
