11/20 — At first, I was wondering where the love was for the Jets following their win over the Steelers. Late that night, the guys on Sirius NFL Radio didn't seem to be too fired up over the major victory, and even one of the New York TV stations showed Jets highlights only after they put up Giants-Lions and Cowboys-Redskins footage.
But while the Jets, as head coach Eric Mangini said, "put the Steelers game to bed" Monday morning due to the short week leading up to Thanksgiving Day in Dallas, we all are allowed to bask in the win a little longer. And so are the folks at nfl.com and the sponsors of their weekly awards, who recognized four Jets as nominees for their contributions in Week 11 games.
Mangini was one of the three candidates for the Motorola NFL Coach of the Week award. One of the secrets to the 19-16 rocking of SteelerWorld was going to the archives for how the Jets handled last year's bye week heading into their 17-14 triumph at New England. "I just looked up last year's bye-week schedule," Mangini told the CBS crew before the game, "and did exactly the same things this year." It worked as the Jets defeated an opponent that came into the game with a record at least six wins better than theirs for only the fifth time in franchise history and the first time since 1992.
Jacksonville's Jack Del Rio and Tampa Bay's Jon Gruden are the other coaches in the running. You can vote for the Coach of the Week here.
Three new nominees for the rushing portion of the FedEx Air & Ground award are on this week's slate, including, of course, Thomas Jones. On Monday Jones reiterated how important yards after first contact were vs. Pittsburgh's fast, hard-hitting defense, and he showed it with a better YAFC game than even his Philadelphia performance. I'll let you know what my numbers show tomorrow when I'm en route to Dallas with the team.
The other RBs up for this award are Earnest Graham of the Buccaneers and Chester Taylor of the Vikings. Here's where you can find the FedEx Air & Ground polling booth.
Shaun Ellis had one of the most versatile and forceful performances of his eight-year Green & White career, and that has led him into the field of five vying for the GMC Defensive Player of the Week award.
The Big Katt, pouncing from a three-point stance as well as from his new linebacker post, was a part of three sacks (one solo, two split). All three came on third down, and his final one also resulted in a strip-sack of Big Ben, a fumble recovery and a 6-yard return to end a Steelers drive in Jets territory.
Ellis' competitors for this honor are Seattle DE Patrick Kerney, Cleveland FS Brodney Pool, Arizona CB Antrel Rolle and Green Bay DT Corey Williams. Cast your vote here if you love great defense.
And for the third week in a row, LB David Harris has been up for the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week award. Against the Steelers, Harris was credited with 11 tackles and the early 17-yard sack of Ben Roethlisberger, which I'm guessing is one of the longest sacks in franchise history.
I'm guilty of electioneering here, but in the early exit polling, Harris is leading this field that also includes Buccaneers DE Gaines Adams, Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe, Dolphins WR-KR Ted Ginn Jr. and Vikings WR Sidney Rice. Go to this site to vote for your favorite rookie this week.

Tue, November 20, 2007 - 3:27pm ET"sutton finally dialed up the defense... he's way too timid to be a DC... every loss where we were actually up by double figures can be attributed to him... he gets the lead and gets sof-T! emphasis on the T for the aforementioned timidity... sutton never deserved this job... didn't mangini say, "the best players will play" maybe he needs to apply that ideology to his coaching staff."

Tue, November 20, 2007 - 4:49pm ET"The win against the Steelers was big for the Titans of New York, but no one is giving credit to these fellas!! They should take that into consideration on Turkey Day and wipe that smile right off of TO and T.Romo's face. Show the league how hungry you really are for that win! I can't play online w/o someone picking Dallas on me the whole weekend, but the thing is the Titans came on top!!! Go Jets "

Tue, November 20, 2007 - 4:55pm ET"I don't think Ellis or Jones will get either of the awards, but Mangini should definitely and Harris should get it. If Harris keeps this up he should be up for defensive rookie of the year. How many other guys this season have posted double digit tackles in every game they started or lead their team in tackles after 3 games. "

Tue, November 20, 2007 - 5:25pm ET"David Harris, is all over the field. I think we might of found our difference maker. Can anyone see an early LT. As far as our team effort goes, could we of done this all year long? From now on Mangini, play to win, don't play not to lose, there is a huge difference. GO JETS....."

Tue, November 20, 2007 - 6:30pm ET"I always thought we had good players if you let them loose. There is not a big talent difference from one team to the next . It comes down to coaching. I hope Mangini and the crew see where they went wrong and stick with this game plan. You need to put pressure on these qbs. TJ looked nice too.Wish they could have used Leon a bit more though. He should get 10-15 touches a game. He's a gamebreaker."

Tue, November 20, 2007 - 8:17pm ET"More impressed by Robertson's performance than Ellis. We should expect that kind of performance from 92. Robertson, on the other hand hasn't done much since being drafted. I agree with Scionce completely, FIRE SUTTON! Leon's performance was phenominal; He forced Pitt into kicking short and avoiding him, but they couldn't do that all game and it cost them BIG! Leon deserves a PRO BOWL VOTE!"

Tue, November 20, 2007 - 9:34pm ET"Nice to see us finally us some different fronts on defense. However, we still don't have proper 3-4 personel. Trade Vilma in the offseason, Harris is much better. Release Robertson and get a big guy for the middle. Take the draft seriously this year and get an end. While we're at it, lets fire Sutton!!!!! He doesn't understand this isn't college football!!! He should probably go back to it!"

Tue, November 20, 2007 - 10:26pm ET"whatever the coach did to the front 3 during the by week he must do that every single week,i never seen this like 12 sacks.i look on the draft board and one said wearegoing to draft and bigDT that is a force every time the ball is snap. if the ends and takles can prove that they are a force we can trade our first round pick for 2 second round and and a 3 every pick, we need a Fast WR, Roadblocker."
greenjello Said:
Tue, November 20, 2007 - 10:47pm ET"I have been saying since week 1, fire sutton. ALSO fire Shotty!! 19 points won't do it against dallas, they need to put up at least 30 and that won't happen with shotty making the calls. The offense hasn't scored 30 all year, without help from the D or spec. teams."
Charlie Said:
Tue, November 20, 2007 - 10:53pm ET"The difference I saw on defense this week was that defenders weren't latching on to blockers. It looked like they actually tried to get around them and pursue the ball instead of waiting for the ball to come to them. Us fans are taking a hit this year. 'Cheering' a Chad injury, suing Belichick (I'm for that one), no-showing last game, and now the cat calls at ramp D. Lets not be Philly fans!"

Wed, November 21, 2007 - 10:03am ET"I too have been reading the sites and Clippings and havent been watching much tv but when I do Cant find a single highlight. It seems everyone is taking credit away from Jets. Saying Pittsburg played down to them and that they got caught looking ahead. Are you kidding me? The Jets dominated in this game the only reason it loked so close is because we couldnt score in the RZ. "
Xavion Said:
Wed, November 21, 2007 - 10:06am ET"We pretty much shut down the Pitt Offense. They had a big play or two that helped them out such as that tipped catch they wouldnt have scored had that ball hit the ground. Vic Carruci says the win was more Pitts fault then the Jets actually playing well. but hes a buffalo fan !!!!"
Drew Said:
Wed, November 21, 2007 - 12:14pm ET"That was the best game from Ellis since the Pittsburg playoff game a couple of years ago. D-Rob,Barton,Pouha and my boy Harris also dominated. I could care less if any of them win awards...if they keep playing that way the press will follow...I also want to wish all of my fellow Jet fans (Ira, Row, Uncle Joe etc..)and our leader Randy Lange a Happy Thanksgiving. Ira any predictions??"
dougmc Said:
Wed, November 21, 2007 - 1:02pm ET"Harris looks great. D got much better. Could have scored more touchdowns over field goals and the game would have been over. Kellen looks to be the future. Like I said, This is the best 1-7 team out there, now there the best 2-8 team out there. Just beat the Cowboys and end the Pats perfect season and we will have salvaged a bad year."
Row Said:
Wed, November 21, 2007 - 3:01pm ET"I still don't like Schotty, but he's starting to become creative. There were a few plays I really just said, "who makes that call?" It happens every game. But he's taking our advice and running the ball. Hopefully it continues. Rhodes is the player on the hot seat. I know Revis can hang with T.O. but safety help is key. I agree a game breaker at WR is key, that's why"
