11/06 — Two days of concentrated bye-week practices have kicked off today and the locale is noteworthy. The Jets are in their bubble.
It was raining this morning, but the precip had stopped and the sun was in the process of returning by the time the Jets went out to practice. But head coach Eric Mangini didn't waver — he took his squad indoors. By a highly unofficial tally, this is only the second time this season and third time in Mangini's two seasons as coach that the Jets have worked in their practice facility.
There was a lot of noise during the 30 minutes of media availability. Not lighthearted noise but the sounds of men working and communicating. LBs coach Jim Herrmann's booming voice could be heard as he worked his group in pass defense. Mangini, who often presides over the entire practice, was in hands-on mode, coaching the defensive backs during bag drills.
Laveranues Coles was back at practice but, as S Erik Coleman had earlier this season, was wearing a red jersey, signifying "don't hit this guy." The Jets and the NFL are taking concussions more seriously than ever.
More on Vilma and Harris
Lots of interesting notes today. Mangini announced at his news conference that LB Jonathan Vilma, already on IR after injuring a knee Oct. 21 at Cincinnati, will undergo surgery in Florida on Wednesday.
David Harris, who moved in at Vilma's inside spot, continues to impress. For the second consecutive week, he is a candidate for the NFL's Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week award. Last week, Harris and his 17 tackles (14 by coaches' breakdown) lost out to Green Bay WR James Jones.
Sunday vs. Washington, he upped his tackle total to 24 (20 by coaches' breakdown, 14 solo), but even he knows the favorite this week is Minnesota RB Adrian Peterson.
"Two hundred ninety-six rushing yards? That's going to be tough to beat," Harris said with a smile today.
Nevertheless, you can vote here for Harris or any of the other four candidates for Rookie of the Week. And you can vote here for Harris or four other candidates for GMC Defensive Player of the Week. Both "polling places" are at nfl.com.
Rashad Departs
Staying on the defensive side of the ball, Mangini announced fourth-year S Rashad Washington had been waived. Washington had been a special teams mainstay, but in the past three games he committed four 10-yard penalties (after getting flagged for only one his first three seasons). With the emergence of Abram Elam alongside Kerry Rhodes as the recent safety starters and the presence of Erik Coleman and Eric Smith, the Jets decided to make a move.
"I wish Rashad well. He's a really good person," Mangini said. "All these decisions really are based on what we think is going to give us the best chance to improve the team."
Points of Late Emphasis
There are many statistical trends the Green & White want to work on this week and reverse over the final seven games, and here are two more: The Jets have been outscored by 53 points in their fourth quarters (91-38). The only larger one-quarter margin in the NFL after nine weeks is San Francisco's minus-59 in its second quarters. And the Jets have been outscored by 80 points in their second halves (145-65). The only larger one-half margin in the league is St. Louis' minus-95 in its second halves.
"I don't know," Rhodes said when asked why the Jets are being outscored by that much late in games. "It's tough. You can look at it different ways. ... It's not good, though."
Redskins Rookie Pays
Monday evening, it was reported that LaRon Landry, Washington's rookie safety, was fined $16,764, one game check, for unnecessary roughness with the helmet for his helmet-to-helmet contact with Kellen Clemens on Sunday. Landry was also flagged for roughing the passer on the play. That was one of Landry's few missteps in the game — he, like David Harris, is a Rookie of the Week candidate for his play vs. the Jets.

Tue, November 6, 2007 - 2:47pm EST"At this pace Harris should make the all-rookie team as well as Revis. Revis already has 10 PD's this season."
Row Said:
Tue, November 6, 2007 - 3:15pm EST"Randy, this is my favorite post of the season. I personally don't care about the draft, I want respect. The Jets fans and media seem to always want to pass the blame. These guys are professionals. If they aren't performing, it's because of technique, scheme, and overall COACHING. Players deserve time off. I want to see FIRE the rest of the season! As for Rashad, I'd take him over Dyson any day!"
Joe Willie Said:
Tue, November 6, 2007 - 4:54pm EST"24 tackles by Harris, 8 yards past the line of scrimage, do not impress as much as 12 tackles, at or before the line would have."
DAMONE Said:
Tue, November 6, 2007 - 6:24pm EST"hold on ROW!!YOU WOULD TAKE RASHAD OVER DYSON.....I CAN TELL YOU DONT CARE ABOUT THE DRAFT BECAUSE RASHAD IS SLOW.DYSON CANT TACKLE THAT GOOD BUT SPEED KILLS.THATS WHY ARE DEFENSE IS BAD NOW(BUT IMPROVING).TOO MANY SLOW PLAYERS!!"
Schuyler Said:
Tue, November 6, 2007 - 6:49pm EST"Joe Willie... You want to know why those 24 tackles are impressive? The next closest Jet in tackles had 8 and that was Barton. 3 times the number of tackles as the next guy and he did stop Portis in the fourth, which led to the game tying field goal. Go Jets! "
Pete Said:
Tue, November 6, 2007 - 11:20pm EST"Wow, what a season. Didn't see it coming. Letting the O-line fall apart totally negated last years two first round picks. Bad, bad move. Both of our lines are probably the worst in the league. It's such a shame to see so much talent at the linebacker position result in such a pitiful defense. PLEASE PLEASE SCRAP THE 3-4! IT'S REALLY REALLY BAD! Really bad. REALLY REALLY BAD!"
Row Said:
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 2:08am EST"Damone, you're talking 4.57 and 4.35, considerable, but not really when you count basically same number of tackles, and the blown plays for TD's by Dyson. The conferences are becoming worthless, I am sick of the away from football questions. I liked the players and coaches interviews, although hilarious. Brian says he "sticks to what works." NO COMMENT No way will I condone losing for picks, EVER!"
Ira Said:
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 7:19am EST"Time to let D.Coleman get some playing time. Randy, I believe that Harris's 24 tackles could be the most by any Jet in their history. So the Vilma to Ravens trade talks appear again in the papers today. Would love to see them bounce back and win some games out of these last 7 left. The Chiefs could be playing the Jets for a wildcard spot the last week of the season."
Randy Lange Said:
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 12:20pm EST"Ira, the 24 tackles could be a franchise high, but tackle statistics are always unofficial and wildly inconsistent. Do you use the pressbox number of 24 for Harris or the coaches' total of 20? Kyle Clifton had a career-high 22 tackles vs. San Diego in 1990."
Dunnie Said:
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 7:50am EST"Its really hard to figure out what the JETS need the most next year in the draft. Here is my opinion (ranked in order of importance). 1. Truck Stopping Nose Tackle 2.Pass Rushing DE 3. O Guard 4.Speed WR. This of course all goes out the window if KC cant play. Then we need a QB no.1 Oh yeah ... Biggest need maybe .... DC. Sutton has got to go ... 300 yards rushing !!!! Are you kidding me?"
Xavion Said:
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 9:11am EST"Hold On Damone! Not only can dyson not tackle but His speed Is good for nothing if he isnt playing the ball right or sticking with the route right dyson is being out played every game. I think Barret is a better corner if he would go back to playing aggressively. Rashad is a solid player and that penalty for the Block in the back was a stupid call. He hit the player in side and the player turned."
Xavion Said:
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 9:19am EST"Im in agreement 24 tackles is a lot but I would have been more impressed if they had been 3yards or less. I mean if the runner gets passed those 3-4 yards there arent many lineman to block a linebacker from making the tackles now I did see him engage a few blockers an make good moves to get off at points."
Ira Said:
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 12:59pm EST"Randy, I use the pressbox #'s. But your're correct the coaches #'s are more acurate. A heads up Clapton and Winwood are playing the Garden. Now thats the type of music that should be played at camp next summer."
charlie Said:
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 7:03pm EST"Ira. Clapton and Winwood together? Is there a Blind Faith reunion? Nice. Now if only we can get the frisbee dogs back. Regarding our fast and slow players...they're just at the wrong positions. Robertson is probably the fastest NT out there. Too bad he's too short for end."
eric Said:
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 7:44pm EST"I was "watching" the game through the Yahoo gameday application and it records each tackle right after each play. They had 20 total tackles for Harris. It seemed he must have been playing great as I watched the tackles count mount, but it looks like those who watched the game weren't that impressed. "
damone Said:
Thu, November 8, 2007 - 8:55am EST"HEY GUYS.....IF IM SO WRONG,WHY IS DYSON STILL THERE AND RASHAD GONE...AND DONT SAY THE MONEY(LOL)."
