David Harris Sounds Like a Hit

File Under: David Harris, Marvin Jones, Mo Lewis, Batman "

10/31 — Have you ever noticed, when the network play-by-play guy gushes, "Wow, that was some hit. Let's listen to it again," that the audio-enhanced replay really doesn't sound much different than when you heard it the first time? Maybe it's the network's parabolic mikes, maybe it's the quality of your (or my) monitor, but those audio replays are almost always a waste of time.

On the other hand, David Harris may have a say in how often NFL TV producers go to the audiotape for future Jets games. One thing that came through during Harris' pro starting debut against Buffalo on Sunday was the audible punch that he packed, not loud but definitely an impactful plastic noise generated from the rookie LB coiling and delivering hits.

It was like a reprise of Adam West as Batman back in the day:

POW! Harris crunches RG Derrick Dockery and RB Marshawn Lynch gains little.

BAM! No. 52 comes around the corner and sticks RB Dwayne Wright for no gain.

BIFF! Harris pops QB Trent Edwards after he's chased up in the pocket for his first NFL sack.

"I've never heard anybody comment about that, not really," Harris told me today about his Rice Krispies TV presence (snap-crackle-pop). "I just go out and make plays. You always want to punish the ballcarrier, whoever he is. You never want to make life easy for him."

Harris couldn't have been accused of that vs. the Bills. Whether you go with 14 tackles (coaches' video breakdown) or 17 (pressbox stats), that double-digit total is impressive for any LB, and especially for a rookie diving into his first start.

So are the 3.5 tackles at or behind the line that Harris unofficially made vs. the Bills. Since the Elias Sports Bureau doesn't keep track of TFLNGs, I've scored them on my own for the Jets for the last 13 seasons, the same way sacks are scored: tackles on runs and receptions that don't gain yardage, no more than two players getting credit for any one tackle and yardage lost.

Harris' total was (again unofficially) one of the top eight by a Jet since 1995. Here's the list:

  Season Player Opp TFLNG YardsLst
1995 LB Mo Lewis vs. NE 4.0 6.5
1995 LB Marvin Jones vs. BUF 4.0 7.5
1995 DE Marvin Washington at MIA 3.5 4.5
1997 LB Marvin Jones at SEA 3.5 14.0
2001 DT Steve Martin vs. MIA 3.5 3.0
2004 LB Sam Cowart vs. CIN 3.5 1.0
2004 LB Eric Barton at BUF 3.5 1.5
2007 LB David Harris vs. BUF 3.5 5.5

And one more thing to like about the rookie's performance vs. the Bills: He drew his first special teams penalty against the opponents when Mario Haggan held him on punt coverage. That's 10 more yards Harris added to his production for the day.

David's still new to all this NFL spotlight stuff. I asked him if there was a nickname he acquired during his stellar Michigan seasons. He smiled, was about to reveal it, then thought better of it. I let him know that some fans are starting to call him "Hitman" in comments to the Radar. He smiled again.

"Whatever they come up with is fine," he said.

It's still early in David's career to elevate him into "Ocho Cinco" territory, but we know how everything is sped up these days. Any thoughts on a nickname for Harris that Jets fans can get behind?

Coles on Injury Report

Laveranues Coles is on today's first injury report of the week with a concussion suffered when he was rocked from behind by Buffalo's Terrence McGee. Coles was listed as not participating in practice. There was no word from head coach Eric Mangini on Coles' availability for Sunday's game. Rookie DE Mike DeVito also suffered a shoulder injury during the 30 minutes of media availability at today's practice and was listed on the report as limited for the practice.

"I dont question the heart of this team.I do however question the ridiculous coaching / play calling on both sides of the ball. We do need to beef up on both sides of the ball, our skill positions and secondary would only benefit from that (clone Mangold!!!). Harris looks great. Special teams played great. Once again we blow a lead, get the ball ran down our throat, make no adjustments and lose"

"David Harris is simply the perfect fit in the Jets new 3-4 Defense. Their defense against the Steelers was outstanding racking up seven sacks including one for a 17 yard loss by David Harris. Don't forget the two games before week 11. David Harris had 30 solo tackles alone and over 40 counting assists. He is a hard-nosed player in on nearly every single hit and HAS replaced Vilma."
