10/28 — What more can be said after the Jets fell for the seventh time in their first eight games this season?

"There's nothing to even elaborate on right now," said WR and offensive captain Laveranues Coles, seemingly OK after getting rocked by a Terrence McGee hit with 7:41 to play in today's 13-3 home loss to the Buffalo Bills. "We're not a very good football team. We're a 1-7 football team, which isn't good. You are who are. If you're 1-7, you're 1-7. It's tough."

"It's pretty much unexplainable," said DE and defensive captain Shaun Ellis. "I know it's the same old merry-go-round. We end up saying the same things over and over again. But it's true. We're accountable for our play. We have to step up and make plays. They made plays and we didn't."

The biggest play of all was a distant replay from last year's Meadowlands meeting between these division rivals. Last December, J.P. Losman fired a ball down the left sideline toward the east end zone that Lee Evans gathered in over David Barrett for a 77-yard touchdown play.

Some of the particulars were different. This time it was down the right sideline toward the west end zone, rookie corner Darrelle Revis and safety Abram Elam in coverage. But it was Losman, on for injured rookie Trent Edwards, slinging the rock to Evans, who took it away from Revis for an 85-yards touchdown, the only six-pointer and the final dagger in this Jets loss.

Here are the six longest opponents' touchdown passes in franchise history (home team in CAPS):

Season Yards Connection Final Score
1963 93 Dobie Craig from Tom Flores RAIDERS 49, Jets 26
1975 90 Roger Carr from Bert Jones COLTS 52, Jets 19
1972 89 Larry Brown from Billy Kilmer Redskins 35, JETS 17
1968 87 Jim Whelan from Tom Sherman JETS 48, Patriots 14
1976 85 Isaac Curtis from Ken Anderson Bengals 42, JETS 3
2007 85 Lee Evans from J.P. Losman Bills 13, JETS 3

"I saw the end part of the pass," said WR Jerricho Cotchery. "I thought it was going to be a pick. I was ready to run out on the field, thinking it was going to be a change of possession."

"I thought it was an interception," Ellis said. "I was holding my hands up. It was a great play on [Evans'] part . I think our guy [Elam] might've knocked [Revis] off a little bit."

The Green & White defense knocked the Bills off their game quite a bit early on, making Trent Edwards look a little more like the rookie he is than the veteran he resembled for much of the first six quarters against the Jets this season.

There was only one sack, one of an unofficial game-high 17 tackles by rookie LB David Harris, but there were a number of blitz looks that clearly confused him, six QB hits in all, three by Revis blitzing out of the slot, and Revis' first pro interception, before Edwards left the game late in the third quarter with an injured right forearm.

"I thought we were more consistent," Ellis said. "They came back and adjusted, but we hit the quarterback earlier. ... We were causing a lot of problems early. We were stuffing them. I tall came down to one play. We stop that, who knows?"

But offensively, the Jets had no answers, no touchdown drives, one Mike Nugent field goal.

"I think our guys feel pretty good about our preparation," said QB Chad Pennington. "It's just about making plays and not making plays. We haven't made plays across the board, starting with myself."

That was the tone most players took, because as several so eloquently put it, there's not a lot to say now.

"We'll keep pressing on," Ellis said, "going to practice and focusing on getting better."

"I'm a leader on this team and I'm not making enough plays to help this team win," Coles said. "That's on me. ... We just need to pull together and look at ourselves with a tough and meaningful eye. Hopefully, we can get this worked out."

LC Climbs Off the Deck

Cotchery said it wasn't hard for him and his teammates to resume playing after seeing Coles lying on the turf for five minutes before walking off under his own power.

"But it's a blow," Cotchery said. "He's one of our leaders. To see him out cold, he was pretty much out cold, on the ground ... but he's a tough guy. And when he got up, that was a breath of fresh air."

"I am so glad there are people who agree how ridiculous our OC is. I think Eric actually might change something this week b/c he went with Kellen. Seeing him throw the ball made me realize how weak Chad's arm really is, even though he did it on purpose. Eric, run first, use Coles and McCareins, Smith should get some spread offense. Lets run them up like Belichick! Ok, now I'll watch. GO JETS!!!"
