File Under: David Harris, J.P. Losman, Abram Elam, Rian Lindell, Steve Tasker

10/28 — Steve Tasker, the former Bills WR and ST demon, is the CBS analyst, and he reminds as the Bills take over after a Ben Graham punt into the wind that the Jets have been outscored in fourth quarters this year, "75 points to 35." "Seventh-three," play-by-play man Gus Johnson corrects.

Either way, it's not a good omen. Nor is J.P. Losman's 19-yard gun to an open Lee Evans at the Jets 27 and the Bills proceed to third-and-1 at the 18.

Then the Green & White defense, which has been playing well all day, comes up big again. Marshawn Lynch is smothered by a combination of S Abram Elam, DT Dewayne Robertson and LB David Harris, with Harris getting the TFL for a 4-yard loss.

That's the good news. The bad news is that Rian Lindell, with the wind, hits from 40 yards. The visitors have the lead and the way the Jets offense has been playing, they may not give it back.

Bills 6, Jets 3

Note: Laveranues Coles still has no catches today. But Pennington hits Jerricho Cotchery for 8, then after a Thomas Jones fumble, Brad Smith for 11 and a first down at the Jets 39.

Finally, Coles gets his first catch — and he pays for it when he's blasted on the high throw by Terrence McGee in the middle of his back by the Bills bench. Coles remains down through most of the commercial break on the Meadowlands turf before being helped up and walking off across the field slowly.

"I'd be surprised if he came back in after that," said Tasker. But we all know how tough LC is. Meanwhile, it's first-and-10 at the Bills 48 with 7:41 to go.

Two runs and a Pennington incompletion while being held by the ankle brings on the boos as well as Ben Graham. It appears it could be a fake punt on fourth-and-3 at the Bills 41 with Brad Smith at upback and Justin McCareins lined up as the "gunner." But it's a Graham drop punt that Roscoe Parrish lets bounce and McCareins downs at the 3.

Nice play. Now the Jets defense has to hold again with 5:57 to go.

They don't. Losman drops back and lets it fly for Lee Evans. The two hit on a 77-yard bomb last year and this time they connect on an 85-yarder for the crushing TD. Darrelle Revis had the coverage and appeared to have the interception, except that S Abram Elam closed in and tried to apply one of his hard hits to the situation. Elam may have bumped Revis off the ball and allowed Evans to make the miracle catch-and-run

Bills 13, Jets 3

Kellen Clemens is inserted in the game for the ineffective Pennington. Clemens hits Justin McCareins for his first reception in a month and then TE Chris Baker, but there will be no miracle comeback with the people's choice at QB. Clemens' strong throw down the right sideline for Smith is too strong and Terrence McGee, who blasted Coles from the game, makes the leaping INT. The Jets have all three timeouts but with 2:27 left, their descent to 1-7 for the first half of the season is inevitable.

The Jets call their third timeout and Buffalo is punting with 1:04 to go. You'd think this would be a joyous time for the Bills, but they recall their 25-24 Monday night loss to the Cowboys when they were leading b

Clemens remains in with 55 seconds to go. He moves the Jets but can't get them any closer than the Bills 37 before throwing a Hail Mary interception on the game's final play.

It's official. This is one of the five worst first halfs in Jets/Titans franchise history. The 1970, '74 and '89 teams all started 1-7. The 1996 team opened 0-8. I'll be back with the recap from the locker room in a short while.

"Pennington has so much CLASS!! I've followed him since his career started at Marshall U. and will continue to follow him throughout his NFL career. He will start for someone next year. Someone stated in an earlier comment that he wasn't a TOP starting QB for the NFL. Please! What he needs is talent around him to execute. Not just players, but the enitre organization. Many times this year..."
