File Under: Dolphins, Chad Pennington, Eric Mangini, Mike Nugent
09/24 — Many questions at Eric Mangini's news conference today dealt with variations on the theme of the defense giving up 424 yards and almost the game to the Dolphins:
Was Miami's success on Trent Green screens to Ronnie Brown intended to take advantage of your defense stepping up the pressure to get to the passer? Did you feel your defense let down in allowing the 'Fins to put together two long fourth-quarter touchdown drives?
The head coach had a simple statement about the reporters who kept trying to go yard, and while polite as always, he wasn't smiling.
"I've been a part of a lot of defenses where there were many yards [given up]," Mangini said. "What you're looking for is points, points for the opponent, making sure you have more than they do at the end of the game."
The coach's point could be comforting for all those fans thinking about jumping off a bridge, or wanting the Jets' defense to do same.
Through three quarters, the Jets had given up 258 yards to the Dolphins, not a horrible amount, at 6.1 yards per play, not great but not nearly as ugly as the 7.9 yards per play they gave up on those last two possessions.
And while Green & White supporters are becoming impatient when hearing about patience, consider that New England's defense didn't become a top-10 unit in yardage allowed until early in the 2002 season, Mangini's third season there, and they didn't finish in the top 10 until 2003.
This is not to excuse, for example, the Jets' 27th overall defensive ranking after three games or the four consecutive 10-yard-plus plays with which Miami started its first fourth-quarter series. But hang in there, fans. Improvement happened last season, and it will happen — is happening — this season.
More Chad Notes
A few more nuggets on Chad Pennington's return to action Sunday. For one, his 124 passing yards were his fewest in a winning start in his Jets career. His previous low: 143 yards in the 17-9 win at Miami in 2004.
And over the years, Pennington's strongest passing quarters have been the first and third, but this season his second frame is second to none. In his two second quarters of action, against New England and Miami, he is 14-for-15 for 122 yards and two TDs, which computes to a 1401. passer rating. The only incompletion? The spike to stop the clock vs. the Dolphins.
No Bobbled Snap
It may have surprised some ESPN Radio listeners this morning that Mike (Greenberg) & Mike (Golic) were talking about Mike Nugent's mom, Carolyn, and dad, Dan, back in Centerville, Ohio.
"My parents are diehard fans of the show — they listen to it every morning when they go to work," Nugent said in the locker room today. "Obviously, Mike Greenberg is a huge Jets fan. My mom has noticed he always talks about the Jets, so she sent him something so he could add a little more Jets to his repertoire."
Greenberg was in attendance at the Jets-Dolphins game, and before the opening kickoff, Nugent said, "He grabbed me on the sideline and said, 'I'm going to put it up.' I had no idea what he was talking about."
Now we all know (thanks to ESPN2's simulcast) that Mike & Mike put up a Mike Nugent Jets Bobblehead doll, adding No. 1 to the lineup of bobbleheads on Golic's desk.

Is it just me or are the pieces starting to come together? #80 should be retired.....Wayne's last play and the look on his face as he still held the ball w/o dropping it says it all. Retire # 80 for all the Jet fans!!!!!!"

This is the same team that finished last season except it should be better with revis. mangini isn't looking that bright. and sutton needs to be fired. he has been outwitted three straight games. it's painful watching. offseason was a bust."

Mon, September 24, 2007 - 9:51pm EDT"The defense is exactly that .. on the defensive. Jets make every pedestrian back in the league look like the second coming of Barry Sanders. Where are the coaches? And why are the Jets unable to keep up physically? Every other team play 7 or 8 in the box at least 1 of every three plays. We are in the prevent from the first quarter. Something radical is required."

Mon, September 24, 2007 - 10:34pm EDT"Until the defense can stop the run on a consistent basis and the offense can stretch the field with the ocassional deep pass, the Jets will never be a real Super Bowl threat. I just can't get excited about a 3 point win over a weak Miami team. "

He is the JETS greatest receiver of all time and I am tired of seeing #88 on an endless supply of players when it should be retired, Toon would hold every JETS record were he not permently incapacitated from concussions. Toon deserves the same admiration as all of the greatest JETS! retire #88!"

It is frustrating to hear only answers not knowing exactly what they refer to. Its like watching the receiver catch a pass and not able to see the whole play develop. P.S. Don't look now, sneak over to the Patriot's site and you'll see it."

They have gone from 6th overall in 06 to 27th overall so far in 07. That should improve this week. Buffalo is last in the league in pts scored with 24 in 3games. I think there could be some changes in the D lineup this week. GO JETS!!!"

I saw some big guys in green & white uniforms trotting onto the field, passing themselves off as the Defense, but the way they played?? Don't get me wrong--I love the Jets--have since '81, but these guys made the certain-win an almost-certain loss!!! A 31-13 score should have stayed that way!"

Tue, September 25, 2007 - 12:47pm EDT"for me i have a big problem with the 3-4 defense the jets have been playing. I think they should go back to the 4-3 defense where they had more success out of. with the 4-3 Vilma played like a machine leading the league in tackles. since then you haven't really heard about him. please do all of us a favor and switch back to a 4-3. the run defense looks horrible in the 4-3 with no pressure to the QB."
Brandon Said:
Tue, September 25, 2007 - 3:40pm EDT"It's no secret that defensively we need to pick it up. But lets not get to ahead of ourselves, there is still a lot of football to be played. We have some good players on D and hopefully they play to there caliber moving forward. However If we continue to not get pressure we will be a top 5 pick come April. If we can get penetration then I think the playoffs are calling our names."

Tue, September 25, 2007 - 3:47pm EDT"As a Jets fan its impossible not love Wayne Chrebet. He is everything this team and its fans represent. He is the kind of player that everyone wishes they had on there team. However, I don't think retiring his jersey is a good idea. Retired #'s are for legends and retiring Chrebets # would be just as bad as when we retired Klecko's. Namath and Maynard are legends. Klecko and Chrebet, not so much."

Tue, September 25, 2007 - 3:50pm EDT""Does anyone here know how to play this game"?(Casey Stengel, circa 1962) I think Leiigh Hunter might! Allow me to explain myself: The "3-4"defense hinges primarily on the "Nose-Tackle"! All he must do is make penetration against the offensive line!Nothing more! If the Nose Tackle "penetrates"the rest of a fairly competent will function well.Roberts is good, but he's no "Moose"!Play the "4-3"!!"
Andrew in Tucson Said:
Tue, September 25, 2007 - 4:50pm EDT"Oh boy! The 4-3 might just do us more justice Robertson, Pouha as tackles Ellis and coleman on the ends now that would be scary. If the Jets insist on the 3-4 they need to have a bigger nose tackle period the end. Not taking anything away from Robertson but we need a person that demands a double team on every defensive snap or we will continue to remain at the bottom of the NFL in run D. Go JETS!"

Tue, September 25, 2007 - 7:54pm EDT"If you are giving up as many yards & points as the Jets, there are clearly players that are not doing their jobs. Mangini can paint a pretty face on it, but THIS DEFENSE IS TERRIBLE. I agree that they may get better as the season progresses, but that's not good enough (this is a win "now" league). They don't have the personnel for a 3-4. Period. End of the story. Go back to the 4-3, Eric!"
*62 Said:
Tue, September 25, 2007 - 9:45pm EDT"Ther person on the defense most harmed by playing the 3-4 is Vilma. As a MLB, and with two tackles to take on the guards, Vilma could move laterally very easily, making plays all over the field with his plus-speed and sure hands. In the 3-4 he has to fill a hole and - due to Robertson's inadequacy at NT - he's got a 100 pound heavier guard in his face on every down. Wrong personnel for the plan."

Wed, September 26, 2007 - 10:44am EDT"We don't have enough power for the 3-4. Our linebackers need to step up and do their job, Vilma is getting stomped. There are to many flaws to name on here, I'd have to type up a 5 page report to name them all."

Wed, September 26, 2007 - 11:26am EDT"I am not in love with the 3-4 either but I have to think that Mangini knows a little something about preparing a Defense to play each week. My concern is B Thomas and V Hobson hve been non factors this year. They had big years last year in our 3-4. How can we blitz 40% and not get there?? Confusing"

Phil Said:
Wed, September 26, 2007 - 4:04pm EDT"The jets are undersized at the linebacker position to be effective against the run.. We need a playmaker at the linebacker position to stop the run.. We will have no chance against the steelers in November if we cannot stop the run."
Patrick Wittle Said:
Thu, September 27, 2007 - 12:56pm EDT"Oh yeah, forgot to mention the Jets need to keep David Harris on the field at all times!!! Like someone said before, he has a knack for the big play. He made a nice stop on a draw play in the backfield for short loss, i don't think we should ditch the 3-4, why not play a little of both? Ellis, Robertson, Pouha, and Coleman with BT rushing the edge. Sounds tempting to me to play a little more 4-3. "

I don't want to see him traded because he does not fit the scheme ... hes too good a player. I want more stops at the line !"
