09/16 — There are a lot of disappointed fans to go along with the players and coaches today after the Jets couldn't get the comeback deal done in their 20-13 road loss to the Ravens this afternoon. But there was also reason for hope. As head coach Eric Mangini said, "I told the team I'm really proud of the way they fought."
So other than Justin McCareins, who grimly but classily stood in front of his M&T Bank Stadium locker and answered questions about two last-drive passes that he didn't catch, it was a fairly optimistic locker room. One phrase I heard several times was "We're OK."
"I think we made a lot of strides," said Jerricho Cotchery, who stood out in the loss with a career-high 165-yard receiving game fashioned on 50- and 44-yard plays in the game's last seven minutes. "The second half was one of those halves we needed to make progress. I told a lot of the guys I feel like the talent is here. We've just got to continue to make strides."
"We're OK. It's not a two-game season. It's a 16-game season," said TE Chris Baker, who made another one of his eye-opening catches, a 3-yard fingertip, toe-touching grab that cut the Jets' deficit to those seven points with 3:12 to play. "You have to build somewhere. It's obviously going to hurt having to go back on the train now. We have our 24-hour rule. We're going to suffer a little today and tomorrow, then move on to Miami."
A major question for the Dolphins will be who's quarterbacking. Kellen Clemens struggled against the Ravens' vaunted pass rush for most of three quarters, but then the second-year man from Burns, Ore., started making plays all over the field.
"As the game grew on, I got more and more comfortable," Clemens said after finding out sometime before kickoff that he was Mangini's choice over Chad Pennington and his sore ankle to give the Jets "the best chance to win today." "My play in the first half was not what it should've been. In the second half, things slowed down, I calmed down and we were able to move the football."
Clemens' teammates and coaches focused on his toughness quotient when asked what impressed them to most about his showing.
"He showed some great toughness and excellent poise in his first game," Mangini said.
"Everyone knows he's got talent," Cotchery said. "Today what a lot of people saw was his toughness."
And Pennington said, "Kellen's a gutsy player, and it was a gutsy performance by Kellen as well as our offensive guys."
Pennington praised the Jets' medical and training teams for getting him ready to play, and Mangini said had Clemens had to leave the game, Pennington would have gone in as the No. 2 QB. But once Mangini made his call, Pennington said, "I don't ever question Coach's decisions. He's the head coach. He makes the final decisions. And we as players have to make those decisions work. Once I found out what position I'd be in, I focused on helping Kellen as much as I could to play in the game."
For those in a QB-controversy frame of mind, Mangini was asked point-blank if Pennington when healthy is still his No. 1 QB, and the coach didn't flinch. "Yes," he said, "Chad is the starting quarterback."
Oh-and-two is a hole historically difficult to climb out of in the NFL. But Mangini said his and his team's approach will be the same as it would've been if the Jets opened 2-0 or 1-1. (You didn't expect it to, right?)
"We'll handle it exactly the same way regardless of what our record is," Mangini said. "It's always going to be the same approach."

I am tired of being proud of a eam that fought hard. How about a team that wins consistantly year afer year. The Jets did lile to improve this offseason."

Go back to the old defensive schemes that used to work quite well. Let Vilma loose again. 5. Get some fire into the team; they go into games looking like they're prepared to lose!"

Most of the sacks were Kellen holding the ball"

Mon, September 17, 2007 - 1:15pm EDT"Clemens does have the arm to stretch the defense. The problem on offense seems to be the O-line - too much pressure on the QB and not creating enough holes for Jones. On defense we need turnovers - right now they seem to be lacking confidence. But we've lost to solid teams - need a winning streak "

Mon, September 17, 2007 - 5:31pm EDT"kellen looks good, but chad must be the QB to get us there, Justin McCareins shoud be CUT for dropping those passess!!.the pass to LColes was low and understanding, we cut recievers in the pre season that are better than McCareins, Hes boring and NEVER Makes Plays, lets play Brad Smith at WR."

Mon, September 17, 2007 - 6:20pm EDT"If you listen to the coach's responses to questions about who plays, you'll recall that personnel and schemes are tailored to each game, each opponent. Where were Brad and Leon? Where the coaches thought they should be. Does it always work? No - one team wins, one loses. No plan is always perfect."
Gregg from CA Said:
Mon, September 17, 2007 - 6:30pm EDT"Kendall didn't single-handedly run the O-line, and losing one lineman isn't the death of a team. Reporters sell papers by stirring people up, not by accurately providing ALL information available to persons making personnel decisions - they don't HAVE it all. A lot of reporting is opinions, not fact"

Mon, September 17, 2007 - 7:07pm EDT"A little slow, I know, but I just read the story from the Pats-SD game. Does the Jets' loss taste less bitter now that SD's 14-2 team got butt-whipped just as badly? I think so... I also think Miami is ripe for torching after watching their D struggle against Dallas. First TD next week: CP to JMc"

This will open run game up.2-Use Baker. 3-More run blitz. go single coverage on the wideouts. Thats why we got Revis. Will force opponents to challenge our ball hawks. 4-2008 draft TE,DE,fast wr trade chad to bal or chi"

Mon, September 17, 2007 - 10:34pm EDT"...come on the Jets stink, really; last year was an anamoly and we will get luck to get on of NE alive in December. Mangini should focus more on game planning to win rather than trying to outsmart a better coach. No wonder New England ws glad to get rid of hom as the D. Coord.....he is way overrated"

Tue, September 18, 2007 - 10:26am EDT"I have to say I am ecstatic with the way the team played, much better than the patriots game, the o-line played well considering it was the ravens and the offense moved the ball well in the fourth quarter. Now they just need to get the defense to click and get some turnovers and sacks. Go Jets."

Tue, September 18, 2007 - 1:40pm EDT"Chill Jets Fans...Dont be surprised with the jets slow start. NE and Ravens are no picnic, and we had a chance against Ravens. Last year defense started slow too. Next 4 games: Miami, Buffalo, Giants, Eagles. We are not elite, we can beat them all. 4-2 is a possibility here."

For the ppl who is doubting Clemens, "CHILL OUT"! Name a QB (1st career start) who would excel against the Ravens D? THANK YOU! Chad give us the best chance to win right now..or perhaps?"

Since Tangini mailed in the season with the Kendall fiasco with a youth movement on the 0-line Clemens clearly is the future and he should start the rest of the season. McCareins should be cut he has done nothing for the team since he's been here"
