File Under: patriots, Mike Westhoff, Drew Coleman, Matt Cassel, Roman Phifer
09/10 — Many fans are scratching their heads and gnashing their teeth over trying to find positives in Sunday's home-opening loss to New England. One nice special teams development did occur early in the second quarter when the Patriots botched a Stephen Gostkowski field goal try that would have given the visitors a 10-0 lead.
You can say that was all Patriots because the FG snap basically hit holder Matt Cassel in the hands. But give Drew Coleman credit, too — he was held up on his outside rush but didn't give up the pursuit and was right on Cassel to tackle the backup QB for what amounted to a fourth-down stop.
"One thing we talked about and we were working on was trying to get to the kicker and make something happen," Coleman said. "[Kyle] Brady blocked me at first, but he kind of pushed me into the kicker and gave me a play.
"But it was a good call from Mike [Westhoff]. He was trying to get everybody in there and trying to irritate the whole cadence."
Such plays don't go down as blocked kicks, but the effect was the same: Jets ball at their 34, still trailing, 7-0. And it will be remembered as the second missed field goal opportunity by the Patriots in the last four games in the rivalry, joining Bryan Thomas' block of Gostkowski in last year's Game 2.
And because the play does get recorded as a rushing attempt for no yards for Cassel, the play provided a sad distinction for the Jets. Coleman became the only Jet to make a statistical contribution on a Patriots third- or fourth-down play. The Pats converted six of nine third downs, and the three they didn't were Tom Brady incompletions that weren't defensed by the Jets. One of them was a Wes Welker drop.
The last time the Jets had such little "crunch-down" contribution was the Green Bay opener way back in 2000, when Roman Phifer had the only measurable stat, a Brett Favre pass breakup. But the Jets won that one, 20-16.
One more small positive on the Thomas Jones front, for any who think the acquisition of No. 20 from the Bears already isn't working out: TJ had six carries for 2 yards in the first half. Then in the third quarter, when the Patriots still had a vested interest in keeping the home team in check, Jones had eight carries for 40 yards, including double-digit runs of 12, 10 and 10 yards. That second half is something to build on for the Ravens.
I'll have one more Radar entry later this afternoon on Coach Mangini's news conference and the locker room scene.

Bottom line is the final score: PATS are awesome and the Jets STINK. Just End The Season. I've never known a more useless franchise."

Mon, September 10, 2007 - 5:34pm EDT"Hey Mark from Boston, Why are you even worried about what Randy or any other Jets fan has to say?? Just another example of the difference bewtween people that know how to win and those that don't. Maybe you just remember when you guys whined about the rainy weather at Gillette last fall? Go Jets!!!"
Sean Said:
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 5:34pm EDT"Sure you have known a more useless franchise - your own. Until little bill got there, the patriots were as bad as the sox were over an 86 year period. Or did you forget? Be humble and happy your team is doing well, not act like you've ALWAYS been used to winning. Yankee fans have that pleasure"

Mon, September 10, 2007 - 5:37pm EDT"I want all of you "big" Jets fans to read all of the nonsense you're blogging and read it back in a couple of weeks. You are all a joke and I'm ashamed to root for the same team. Thank god Randy's Radar was not running last year after the Jacksonville game. We need more fans like Ira..Go Jets"
Gregg from CA Said:
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 6:33pm EDT"Hmm... I recall one opening day, not long ago, several commentators saying that Buffalo was heading for a division crown and the Patriots were done - all based on the first week's score. Anybody else remember that? Let's take a deep breath, get a grip, pull back on the panic reins, and - spectate!"
Jake Said:
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 7:30pm EDT"I hear ya Sean, I think that is Mark from Boston's problem he doesn't know how to win or lose. I feel certain he would sound like some of our fair weather fans if something goes wrong. I think everyone should just cancel the season and mail the Lombardi trophy to Mark and little Bill(LOL) go Jets!!!"
Ira Said:
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 9:15pm EDT"Drew Thanks man. Same thing about you. Your're a good fan. Can't get on a team after 1 game. If any of these fans really played any serious sports in school they wouldn't write this stuff. When somebody has a bad day at work do they just give up or do they comeback the next day and try to improve."

Mon, September 10, 2007 - 9:33pm EDT"Randy moss killed us out there.Darrelle Revis did his part, but it was mainly david barrett who Brady picked on the most. We need a solid shutdown corner along with some pass rush.Tom Brady stood way too long in the pocket.D-Line had no sacks, linebackers didnt stop the run. What about Ellis Hobbs KOR!"

Mon, September 10, 2007 - 9:37pm EDT"why is this mark from boston on this website. he needs to go somewhere like the patriots site. Ive never watched a more sorrier, cheating, stupid, idiotic team like the patriots. Pats STINK. I wanna see brady stand in the pocket that long or randy moss catch those passes again. IT WON'T HAPPEN!!!"
Vaughn Said:
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 1:43am EDT"I agree Randy, whatever the O line was doing in the second half looked good because TJ was getting more space to break runs. My main concern was the pass rush. Not even Champ Bailey has a chance to stop a good receiver when you give the QB that much time to make his throws. Fix the defense. "

They both support each other. What the fans did was wrong. But it wasn't Kellens fault . He will have his day. He is our furure."
Mark from Boston Said:
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 11:44am EDT"Sean, are you kidding? The PATS have been a solid and exciting NFL team for over a decade now. The Jets are a buzz-kill every year. You should know, HAHAHA! Enjoy another meaningless season."

Frank Said:
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 12:46pm EDT"Im sorry, but a botched field goal, and a few double digit runs are nothing to be happy about. The only thing to be happy about was the fact the Jets had another game to build chemistry with eachother, offense and defense, or we could be happy that we gave up the longest play in NFL history. Go JETS"
