File Under: Randy Moss, Jerricho Cotchery, Adrien Clarke, Leon Washington, Tom Brady, Flight Crew, Laurence Maroney

09/09 — It's hot, humid and sunny under only thin wisps of clouds. The members of the New York Jets Flight Crew comes out of the huddle, showing off their new uniforms publicly for the first time, and behind their flags and amid the smoke of the on-field fireworks come the 2007 Jets.

The Jets win the toss when the Patriots call heads and referee Jeff Triplette's coin toss comes up tails, as in "Tails never Fails." The Green & White get the opening kickoff, and for that Justin Miller comes out as the single deep back. But Stephen Gostkowski's kick angles away from Justin and goes through the end zone.

On offense, LG is manned by Adrien Clarke, Leon Washington is the starting TB, and everyone clears out of the backfield for the Jets' first play of the season, a Chad Pennington 9-yard completion to WR Jerricho Cotchery.

Then it's Thomas Jones in his first game action since the opening preseason game, getting his first carry as a Jet on a 2-yard burrow off right tackle for a first down. The drive bogs down on fourth-and-a-full-yard at the Pats 46, so Ben Graham executes a strong drop punt, fair-caught at the Pats 9.

The Jets defense opens with first-round rookie Darrelle Revis making his first NFL start in his first game for the still gimpy and deactivated Andre Dyson. David Barrett is on the right corner.

The Pats come out running, first with Laurence Maroney gashing up the middle for 11, 4, 6 and 6 yards. Then Sammy Morris comes in and rips off a 13-yarder. As Bill Belichick said at the Saturday night production meeting when Phil Simms asked if Maroney was his feature back, "You can say that. I'm not. We use everybody on the roster."

Then comes a Tom Brady pass to Randy Moss on an in-cut over the middle. Moss is wide-open in the single coverage until brought down by Barrett at the 13. The Jets stop the first two plays, but Brady gets rid of the ball quick vs. the blitz, hits Wes Welker in the slot, and he slips Barrett's tackle and walks in for the touchdown to cap the 91-yard drive. Tough way for the Green & White to start.

Patriots 7, Jets 0

Miller gets his first kickoff return in a game, gets it past the Jets' 30 — and fumbles. But wedge man Chris Baker is in the right place to come up with the ball in the scrum, avoiding disaster. But the Jets go three-and-out when the Pats have a third-down right-side pass covered and Pennington can only scramble left for 3 yards on third-and-4. Another Graham punt, this one a touchback.

Brady hits his first pass to Donté Stallworth for a first down, but then the Jets hold, with Dewayne Robertson shooting the gap ferociously to set up a 1-yard loss by Morris, then Welker dropping a first-down completion on third down. The Jets get the last possession of the quarter, but it ends badly when Mike Vrabel beats RT Anthony Clements around the end, Ty Warren barges up the middle, and Pennington is sacked for a 9-yard loss.

Graham's third punt doesn't look as good, but gets a bounce, and Brad Smith is on Welker for the tackle on the 0 return as the opening quarter of the season goes solidly on the Patriots' side of the ledger.

"Jets are caught a break by Baker recovering the fumble. "

"Awful, that is the only way to discribe opening day. I realize the Pats are well coached team, but the Jets look as if they took a step back from last year! I had high expextations for the gang green this season, this game was a huge dissapointment for me. "

"This should of been a statement game, instead it turns out to be an embarrassment, no pass rush, can't stop the run, 108 yard return" you must be kidding, this game was played at home, with everything in our favor, and look how we came out and played, what a discrace!!"
